- With the Supreme Court set to issue a ruling on Donald Trump’s presidential claim tomorrow, Laurence Tribe and Judge Luttig join Ali Velshi to discuss what’s at stake, how the decision could impact his criminal cases, and what it means for accountability and democracy at large “The politics of the moment will all but demand that Jack Smith forgo trial before the election and until after the election,” Judge Luttig tells Velshi. “But I would urge Jack Smith in the strongest possible terms today not to yield to that cynical partisan politics, and to bring the case on for trial even in September or October in the name of and for the sake of American democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law.”

Never in my life have I heard such a remarkable defence of democracy and the rule of law against such incomprehensible delay in seeing justice done.
Well, no. Never have we seen democracy imperiled by an unconscionable delay to the judicial process. Still, they good old boys made their arguments very forcefully.
Ill explain it - Trump is an elite, Am3ric4 does not prosecute elites. The Dems held off until he started to run for election and then they scrambled to prosecute.
The crimes are real but the timing is a result of the old boys network protecting him for 3 years

@@Kal-mq2pj Unfortunately even she admitted that it would take 80 days to get the trial back on track, and everybody involved up to speed. One saving grace is that there is no law that would stop the courts from running every day before, after and even DURING election day. Though I don't see a trial on election day doing anything but causing a myriad of logistical problems, so that day would likely be skipped.

Luttig is a true conservative. I'm liberal/Democrat. Luttig and I would likely not agree on many issues and policies but we could both sit together to break bread and discuss American history and our love for the United States. I left Cuba as a child refugee fleeing authoritarian left and will lay down my life for my adoptive country to not be exploited by right-wing authoritarianism.

No judges should be appointed by politicians. They should be appointed by a totally independent committee consisting of a wide range of lawyers, academics, professionals and ordinary citizens as is the case in much of Europe. Only then can you hope for a more unbiased judiciary and a fair system. As it is, the SCOTUS is totally corrupt and wields too much power.
What is the process for removing the justices of the Supreme Court. I thought they were appointments for life.

@@richarddean3154 It's called investigations. Trump was originally indicted in 2022. Also his team kept on delaying these trials. Think about it.
The Supreme Court refused to follow the very clear language of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Instead, they muddied it and made up their own rules. I believe it was spearheaded by Roberts, who although he pretends to want to make the best decisions, has become entranced by his own cleverness and created this disaster, helped by Alito and Thomas.
How many people get their trial delayed for well over a year just because they are applying for a job? The obvious answer is none except for donnie.

Since the beginning of his tenure, Roberts has presented himself as a model of balance and intelligence, restraint and reserve. It's been an act. This court is as politicized as any in recent memory. He should have taken action against Thomas a long time ago and against Alito immediately.
He has no disciplinary power over other justices.
