- FULL RESULTS-BLOWN 302 POWER MODIFICATIONS, BOOST, EXHAUST, HEADS & CAM. Do supercharged motors really benefit from increased exhaust flow? How about increased head flow? How well does your average shelf performance cam work under boost? What happens to the boost curve when you make performance mods? Check out this test where we add long-tube headers, aluminum heads, a Comp cam and more boost to a supercharged 5.0L 302.

When I was a kid our "family car" was an 83 Capri 5.0L..... it had basic mods everyone would do to Foxs later on.... 3.73s, long headers, 2.5 dual exhaust..... After Mom missed a gear (ROD 4spd) and kicked the rods out of the orginal 5.0L, Dad built a 306 with ported SVO J302 heads, Engle cam and topped it with a B&M 174 that had twin Mikuni side drafts.... He thoughtfully swapped the ROD for a C4 automatic and the early 7.5" rear broke first timehe launchedit at the track..... luckily the 8.8 rears were out by then and we got one under the car. That car was a legend in the ATL scene from the mid 1980s through out the early 1990s. Ran high 10s on slicks at Commerce a few times. That was unbelievably fast in those days. Nice video, thx for the trip down memory lane.
Excellent parenting ! My 2 daughters now 17, 15 remember as little kids riding in my purple hotrod, 1996 mystic cobra with mods, And they love cars. Both learned to drive on my now 03gt and she takes it to school everyday while we finish her 1988 supra and my younger will take the 03 mustang. Somehow my brother found my first car after its been gone 27 years, 85 GT HO, so fun car family and we will never stop
the little blowers make even a 302 get with the program....good job...
RICHARD, good to see you back, we missed you.
I went camping with my family-I'm back-look for some daily doubles
@@richardholdener1727 nice!
@@richardholdener1727 Excellent, good for you.
I bought a 6 man inflatable tent last year, sure wish I had it when I was in the Military, the damn thing is fast........lol
@@johnparrish9215 I'm pretty sure if Richard had an inflatable tent he'd blow it up with a turbo or supercharger
Thanks.. New. Too this..... Just trying to find answers... 💪🙌
351w round TWO please!
He's ba-aaaak!
Back in 89, I took my newly assembled 434 MC SS, a fairly mild street car, to a test & tune at the local strip.
First thing they lined me up against, was a wicked sounding Fox body. Had a blower up through the hood, and slicks, to boot.
I just naturally figured I was about to get stomped on, and thoroughly embarrassed the first time out. But that mild N/A 434 walked away from the Mustang like he was stuck in first gear. The race wasn't even close.
Really made my day. There is just no substitute for cubes...
Thanks for taking your time to pull wrenches and share the combination results, it is priceless for us guys that don't have a dyno but a lot of ideas in the head that maybe are not so good or confirmed with your testings
Richard , the king on content !
I had pretty much that same combo years ago in my 87 Mustang Notch. What a extremely fun car on the street and a 10.00 to 10.15 at the track. It did click off some high 9s to. But that combo is a simple straight forward build to make really good power. And at 2840 lbs like mine lots of fun and good mileage. Thanks for this test Richard for this test. I have told many guys to do this build and they just blew it off. So thanks for showing what it is capable of.
How much whp? And what was your general setup that’s great times
I have one of these sc on a stock 68 302 cast time bomb. So far so good. I did add some electronics to help it for a little while. Thanks for the content Richard.
Yesterday I was thinking to myself that it’s been a while since you have posted a video, glad to see you’re back.
Hi Richard,
thanks for answering, I never expected you would even read my note.
I follow you because you have so much experience and knowledge on combinations.
Best wishes Richard,
Bill
Always wondered how well these little Weiand blowers work. Good stuff!
I've got a 302 with a B&M 144 with a 750 Holley Built the motor to mirror the sbc test motor that B&M did. This was back in the late 80's put in a model A. Never knew the HP but it was fun, Thanks for the video.
Nice Build just imagine a 347...Thanks Richard‼
I'm a Ford guy it's cool to see a few more to a 5.0 thanks again
That made some decent power and torque! 👍👍
Very impressed with the E7 supercharger numbers. Really thought the cam/heads swap would be more. I can imagine the 425 horsepower with stock HO cam and E7 heads would be a very reliable combo. It would make a street driven Fox a whole lot of fun with years and years of enjoyment
In the scope of things, that cam is SMALL and those heads aren't very big either. That combo would be a superfun driver. Might not kill everything you set your sites on, but it would produce alot of smiles per gallon.
I ran a stock engine with longtubes and header mufflers with this same blower at 7-8psi. It was a riot. I have a few vids on my page
In the car with a full exhaust and accessories turning you might see 350 to the tires. Be fun.
@@jooctane and your page is.........
grew up driving around in my moms 85.5 Mustang GT. It had a cam, rear gear 3.73 (had 3.27 stock). My old man's best ET was 11.88 with cheater slicks and offroad xpipe with no cats just mufflers. Loving the content. My brain loves all these numbers and machines. Have a good day Rich!
I do like Foxes
@@richardholdener1727Can you do this combo with 2V and 4V on a 302 with this? Then some Aussie 3V's?
Thanks
Love the 5.0 content
I love you. This helps a lot. I’m in the middle of building a motor help me realize what package I should go with.
Glad I could help
Richard Holdener do you have any tested small block Ford 331 333 with different cam and/or Head packages?
Great and informative video!
👍🏼👍🏼
Great upgrades!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!
He really get's a kick out of it, when it's time to say.....RUN MORE BOOST.....can barely hold back the big grin....good test.
Fun batch of tests!
Less boost and more power, Love it!!
Yeah but more boost more power is better.... what's that rattling sound?
Awesome video!
The first boost curve is hilarious. It looks like a centrifugal blower.
This is information I have pondered for over 16 years...
Heyyyoo! Happy Sunday to me with some 5.0L dyno testing as I rise from my slumber.
This makes me want to duplicate this engine then buy a old Ford to put it in. Nicely done.
Again thanks for sharing...
You should test the limits of that blower by stroking the engine, which for me would be a good test to see how HP that blower can supply.
Nice videos love watching
Just came across this great video! I have an old 302 Mustang Ive been wanting to put that exact 174 blower on for years. I wanted to build a HiPo 289 but the blower might be easier, cheaper, and more power.
I got to drive a Kenne Bell 2.2L non intercooled blowzilla sn95. That car made about 9#'s from 2-6k rpms and the torque never dropped off. Problem was it would not hook on the street despite having a 12 inch wide radial. So much fun out of a stock 5.0.
Holley stopped making this 174-blower last year. Kind of sad as they are really nice and do add some power. I put one on a 351W using PMS adaptor plates, distributor adaptor, 750 carb and a longer belt, aluminum heads, stock grind roller cam. Works well but had to put on a 3-inch pully to get the boost up to 7 psi. When it wears out it will hit the scrap bin as there are no parts available for this blower.
There is a new roots type blower with a water inner cooler in testing from Australia for the 302 that uses a serpentine belt setup with fuel injectors, 19 psi boost that makes a lot of power. Should be on the US market soon. But I don't know if it will fit a 351 W.
Love this one..great info, yur technique is very good 👍 👌 👏 😀
Thanks Richard... I have an 87 Lincoln Mark 7 and I planned to boost it potentially turbo.. your recent vids have helped me see right where I need to look.
Keep the vids coming 😉
I would love to see a turbocharged bike engine! Keep up the great content Richard.
Great idea!
a Turbo Busa
Even a 600 or something cheep to see if you can get it to compete with the busa
Right on
We need some dodge 3.8 Pentastar in the other guys series. They are almost free at the scrap yard and good for front and rear wheel drive projects.
i'll 2nd a 3.6 pentastar shake down .they use them in everything from minivans to base model muscle cars
Junk.
3.9 dodge v6
So cool that you made this video. I have a stock block scat 347 forged crank h-beam rod’s srp pistons 10.5 to 1 Afr 185s ,Comp cams xe282hr rpm air gap , Aed 750 carb with a tremec magnum 6 spd and 4.30s 31 spline axles in 85 notch. Was thinking about using this supercharger and staying with a carb so I can tune it myself but I heard bad things about drivability issues- tuning-heat. There’s not a lot of info out there on this setup.
Sam.. 10.5-1 is to much compression for this S/C it needs to be 9.1 or lower. You could use a turbo with that comp and good fuel
Cool video. Im gonna order a smaller upper pulley for my 142 Weiand
Richard, you teased me with coyote big bang content. My mouth has been watering ever since. When is that content coming out?
I have been working on that
Always concerned making a stock block 302 put out over 500hp, good job!
500 whp is the limit everyone talks about or the point where you gotta start worrying about splitting the block. That is 600 engine hp or more this is being tested on an engine dyno no exhaust or accessories turning NOT the same as 500 WHEEL hp.
Going to find me a setup soon. Only issue with this video is that I wanted to hear it WHINE
Nice one! Would love to see a small block mopar on your channel :)
Super good
Sure be nice to see that big bang big block...
Just shy of 9 pounds of boost abd getting that little stock 302 to 435 horse is impressive
Had a 98 GT 2v 4.6 with frpp/svo blower at 9-10lbs. Fun times.
Your budget boost tests are very informative and are helping me form a plan for a boosted Ford. I would really like to see e85 directly compared to common pump 92 octane e10.
E85 makes a huge difference especially with boost it basically does close to the same as race fuel for alot less. The downside is you need 30% more fueling to run if safely so that means much bigger I injectors and possibly even fuel system upgrade depending on the platform. It will also get 30% worse mpg too but at the price point and what its capable of its worth it
Put it right into block-splitting territory!
Richard, I wish I knew you in 1967, I had a D dragster that had a Ford flathead(53 block) with Hillborn injection a crane R450 cam.
It was very late in competitive flathead racing, but I had fun. Pump gas ! 10:98 @ 117 best time. I was off by ~ 0.8 seconds on the record, Pete Shadinger ~ 10.3 !
Did you ever do flatheads!
I am in awe of your knowledge!
Bill
NEVER TAKEN APART A FLAT HEAD BUT THOSE ARE IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS
Just got a 302 always been curious what you can do with them.
Love it all! but I'm waiting patiently for an FE ford motor to sneak in there? With boost of course!
A new test that many of us would like to see on similar combinations would be the addition of snow ❄️ performance injection. Just to see a pump gas boost motor at max timing with this injection set up. This will allow max timing because it is equivalent to 116 octane. No intercooler or really an after cooler for a roots style. This is a liquid intercooler with the addition of high octane and no more hood clearance needed. Also you can do another addition to that combo for us street stealth people. That would be your favorite power adder and spray it with another 100 shot. Now that would be Super Man quality testing levels. This is for people who can never get enough !!!! Like me !!!!!
Nice fun safe combo. Above 700hp and the block spilts in half. LS engines power capability and durability has us all spoiled now.
How far forward does that 174 protrude? Trying to measure one up for my engine bay but the Holley docs are for a 177
I want to put a supercharger on my 89 towncar. I’m a dirtbike guy so this will be a learning experience
Would be curious to have seen the 8lbs of boost with a similar cam but with 115 LSA, Liked the video : )
He might have a video on that...
Even though I'm more of a Mopar guy (the pic is my wife), this build makes me wish I still had my 66 Falcon, or my 78 Mustang II Mach One, or one of my 4 Mavericks.
Those blowers are nearly $4000 here in Canada. A good Nitrous setup is maybe $1000 with a bottle warmer.
Yeah, but 4000 Canadian is only $1.98 US 🤣.
Do you have any IAT testing with a draw through like this? I'd be interested to see how much the charge cooling brings temps down, especially with pump e85 : )
I put 5.0 Gt40p heads that were ported from the machine shop when they enlarged the head bolt holes on a bored 10of over 5.8 with dual plane Weiland stealth and 1:7 roller rockers 650 holley vac secondaries and a mild comp cams extreme 4x4 cam for low to mid range power for my 91 interceptor but never got to put it in as the car got destroyed on the trailer when it got a flat. Been sittin on the stand for over 10 years now always wondered what it would have made.
Richard good to see you back again. I love the look mini charger on a small block. I really Hope speedmaster makes a intake for it to fit the LS. So far They Only make it for the 671&871.
I am always looking for that supercharger slapped on a bone stock smog era engine. The few I’ve seen were absolute burnout machines but no dyno numbers. Can you throw on on a 305 Chevy or even a 301 Pontiac?
I really wanna see some nitrous sbf stuff that would be awesome!
Really highlights how good an LS 4.8 is
And the new 5.0 Coyote, if you can afford it/have the room.
How well would all this fit under the hood? Need a 4" Cowl or what?
Hey Richard, put a 150 shot on top of that mini blower. It REALLY makes it sing and I used to run a 144 on a SBC that way.
You cant push a 302 that far. The block will split at 600hp.
@@donellmuniz590 Silly Donell, you make that statement as if its an absolute fact. I've been running the same blown 347 with a stock block for 15 years making over 600Hp on nitrous, so have alot of other people.
@@donellmuniz590 You really wouldn't believe how many times Richard has taken stock blocks past that power level. There is no max hp rule for these blocks.
@@madmod If it's a myth, why do I keep hearing and reading stories about guys splitting stock blocks at around 600? Are they really making more than that? Are you guys really making less than that? Is it a tuning issue (too lean, too much timing, detonation, lousy gas, etc)?
@@donellmuniz590Here is my problem with that. 600flywheel is different from 600hp roots, 600hp turbocharged, 600 on spray. Each one makes a different torque curve, boost curve, and level of stresses on the engine. A centrifugal car may make 600hp with 200ft/lbs of torque less than a twin screw car making the same 600hp. A turbocharged car making 600hp doesnt have the 100hp driving loss of the blower attached to the crank. See my point?
Good information thank you. Was pump gas used in the test and what was timing at. Thank you for another Ford test.
100 race gas under boost
How do the E7TE heads compare to the GT40P (Explorer) heads, which are still available in boneyards?
💪
Richard Holdener When you say it has stock compression, a Google search says from 79-93, compression varied from 8.2 to 9.2. Where do you think this combo ended up? I'm trying to get an idea where my combo might end up based on your results.
Wonder what it would make with a 347 stroker set up ?
How about results from a stock 5.0l more boost with intercooler maybe with cam? Rather not hurt the more expensive heads if possible.
great vid. add E85 carb , E85, turn up the boost and see what happens.
That would have worked well
@@richardholdener1727 E85 would certainly be advantageous to a mini positive displacement supercharger, due to the extreme rotor speed it has to be turned to create any meaningful amount of boost, but how are you going to "turn up the boost?" With a 6" drive pulley and a 3.25" driven pulley, the blower is already turning 11,446 revolutions per minute which is just below the max blower speed according to Weiand.
Richard holdener is this supcharger ok for a daily I just rebuilt my 302 but it has a f 303 cam and trick flow upper kit heads cam intake 24lb injectors
Add boost till the block splits then back off a few psi. :-)
Richard is it in your plans in the future to test cylinder fuel distribution problems with a single plane intake, on a ford engine which have equally spaced intake runners, and test either exhaust temperature or O2 % on each cylinder and see if by changing to higher rocker arm ratios on those leaner cylinders will help to get them closer to all other cylinders and see what results will that bring on the dyno, if there is a SBF available with enough valve to piston clearance and far away from spring coil bind, I guess it is a relatively cheap and fast test, because it is only changing rocker arms and pushrods, and some welding to old headers to install either the RTD's or O2 sensors that are already available at the dyno shop if it is not already available, don't forget the 4 hole spacer 1.5" tall for the single plane intake. Regards
You are awesome! Love to hear your opinion on EFI cam vs. CARB cam? What, if any differences when running both on a carb engine, THANKS for all the info.
the cams will do the same things with both methods of fuel delivery
I wish Holley/Weiand, Eaton, TBS, and any other Roots blower builders would switch to the more efficient Twin Screw design. But I suppose the price would skyrocket.
Man this would be perfect for my play truck but I just checked there website and it says not available
Whys such a small carb? Isn't 500hp the magic number to split the block in half? What about timing?
Surprised that block survived....I've seen them slit down the middle at those power levels
I plan to do a 5.0L swap in my '99 Ranger soon (5.0 from a '98 Explorer) & thought about doing a supercharger build on it & hopefully make a whining noise
but don't want to make a fuck ton of power, maybe at least 400hp max so idk what psi would I need for that much HP
unless I should leave it N/A (only want to do cam, forged internals, headers, muffler, intake, NGK iridium plugs, porting, & a tune if I stay N/A, maybe have it tuned on 88 octane & E85 for racing on the track or "Mexico"
Richard. I have a question. 1971 Ford 302 Mexican block out of a mustang. Unknown mileage. I’m running Holley sniper efi and ignition. With edelbrock performer 289 intake with one inch open spacer. Runs great. Haven’t put it on the rolling road with the Holley yet. I do have the edelbrock estreet heads and cam to go with it but haven’t installed them yet. I was thinking about introducing boost but I don’t want to add ring gap. Is this a bad decision? It’s in a 76 f100 with a three speed top loader and ford 9” rear 🤷🏽♂️ Help!!!
Richard you do the best 5.0 litre ford strokers keep up with the great work how about a 302 boss full spec rebuild 347 stroke Windsor bottom end with Cleveland heads and manifold just want to see the power it makes
westech recently did a 347 with Boss 302 heads-it made over 500 hp
How long ago was this tested? I thought Canfield closed its doors a decade ago.
Richard
As always : great vid and reliable information that we can use. Now, ( on the oddball engine subject ), how about the 3.8 Ford Supercoupe? Had one years ago. With a pulley change and exhaust, it really ran good. Would like to see a build. I'm thinking about one for an engine swap. I remember it as a really complex system. Is it worth the trouble ?
I did a few mods with one of those
So what dealership can I visit to pick up a Holdener Foxbody Mustang with a Boost-A-Matuc powertrain? Sounds like more fun than my license can survive!!! 😂😊
Where did you get that 35 year old blower?
Nice little small block set /package //. I looking forward to going to states to try out selves new block with there supercharged set up on the track .: I going home this year ///. Want to get some track time in this year ,. I stay in touch let you know how I get on @marcus
Thanks Richard. Damn that little 302 is so underestimated as stock with a minor upgrades like flat top pistons. Without the blower would we see like 210-225hp?? Thanks Richard
That's what they made stock...
As I said in the video-the stock 5.0L NA makes around 250 hp
Richard Holdener. Damn !! Sorry Richard. Brain farted right by me. Lol. That blower cattle prods the shit out of it. When you hyped up that 3.8 v6 that was one I didn’t expect for the results. That’s the other guy no one has the guts to admit they were beaten by. Hahahahaha. Thanks Richard
Wonder what you would have got just doing pulley vs the cost of heads cam pistons to pick up so little gains?
BOOST IS EASY BUT WOULD BE HIGH WITH STOCK HEADS AND CAM
You need to turn up the boost until you increase the bank angle beyond 90 degrees. This will lower your center of gravity.
FLAT 8
When we gonna see the 3800 series motors??
Can you put together a video showing the dollar per horse power comparison between all these motors you have been testing.
I don't have costs
I’ve been looking for one of those blowers for my truck! Do you ever sell off parts of old combinations?
I don't
that blower is considered too radical for a 350 chevy but just right for a 5.0 ford. I have been considering getting a 177 for a 350 for a long time. Some good heads like a 200 cc head and rolller cam should be rockin. And you can always slow the blower down to keep boost in line with fuel used. E-85 anyone?
