Sabaton definitely wins this, although I enjoyed the Amaranth version as well. I listen to The Great War album at least three times a week on my commute.
@@Max_Griswald What's your favorite? I haven't listened to the Great War that much (too many other good albums by Sabaton) but I'd probably choose Devil Dogs. Don't know why there's so little love for that song! 🤷♂️ -Michael
For a bit more of an answer, the way I rank the songs on The Great War album is: Seven Pillars of Wisdom Great War Attack of the Dead Men Devil Dogs The Future of Warfare Fields of Verdun 82nd All the Way A Ghost in the Trenches The Red Baron The End of the War to End All Wars In Flanders Field The huge caveat to that is the fact that even the songs at the bottom are great. For instance, In Flanders Field is a personal favorite of mine and would rank much higher when not placed alongside the rest of the lineup. I've listened to that song for as long as I can remember, and I think that the version on the Sabaton album is one of the best that I've heard. It also has a sort of calming vibe after the rest of the album, but overall I think it's mainly out of place when listening to the album. TEotWtEAW (That's a mouthful!) is likewise a great song, although there are certainly stronger portions of the song than other sections. I can't rank it higher because of the quality of the rest of the album, not any lack of quality on the part of the song. Overall, The Great War is just a fantastic album and it's pretty crazy that when I was watching your video, I did think that 82nd All the Way was about fifth best on the album, but after sitting down and really digging into it, I honestly think it's closer to seventh. Again, not taking anything away from the song, it's just THAT GOOD of an album, in my opinion.
@@Max_Griswald Thanks! I'll give the album a listen in that order just for kicks, and see if I end up liking it better. I have the same feeling where all the songs are good for Heroes and Carolus Rex (...obviously), but didn't get it with The Great War. Could just be a slight case of Sabaton burn-out, I've listened to them so often over the years that The Great War seemed like The Last Stand 2.0. But it's the same high-quality problem you mentioned with Flanders Field - everything they do is great, and when I listen to them I tend to fall back on their earlier albums. Can't complain! -Michael
The recorded lyrics for "82nd All the Way" mistakenly attribute Sergeant Alvin York to the 338th Regiment rather than his actual assignment to the 328th Infantry Regiment. The band corrected the mistake when they played the song live at Wacken Open Air 2019.
Go Sabaton! 82nd All The Way! Death from Above! Stationed in Ft. Bragg, N.C. Home to Green Berets and Delta Force! Thanks for covering this song. C-5/10 Infantry 1995, U.S. Army.
I love both versions, but for me Amaranthe takes the win just because their version is heavier, more of a headbanger, while the original is a bit "softer"
That battle is now up: ruclips.net/video/3BqW_Te_oaQ/видео.html! Check it out and let us know who is your favorite! (and thank you for the suggestion!)
I think having one video and then the album cover is totally fine. Or even 2 album covers to make things fair. I'm always a sucker for more obscure bands and those don't always have a video. I've been lucky to see both bands together on tour this january. They were supposed to go on a big european tour which I suppose has been mostly canceled due to the pandemic. I actually like both bands more or less the same, but my vote goes to Amaranthe this time. I think they did a great job! If you want to do a 3 song reaction of Amaranthe at some point, I'd suggest the following songs: Hunger, Stardust, The Nexus.
Thanks! That's really helpful to know - I think for the next few we'll be loosening up the video requirement, there's just too many good covers out there without them. I've been planning to give Amaranthe a closer listen after this video, so I'll definitely start with your suggestions. Cheers! -Michael
Like you said- Both excellent! Very hard to choose... if I just listen to the music, probably go for Amaranth, but the video with the image's of the band Sabaton combine with the that typical sound- I vote Sabaton! 🤟 You should do a battle between Sabaton- "Defense of Moscow " and Кипелов band (Kipelov, from Aria) - song about Stalingrad- "Непокоренньй" (unconquerable) - two amazing tunes and also similar amazing videos and themes 🤟
@Metal Academix during WW1 the 82nd was an infantry division it had not yet been made into the 82nd airborne division it would not be until the U.S.A entered world war 2 would they be redesignated and trained into an airborne division along with at that time the creation of the 101st airborne division the 82nd has the AA patch and the 101 has the screaming eagle patch.
As a veteran of the 101'st Airborne Division, let me say that if they would have been blasting that, it would have made it more of a fun experience. Jumping from a C 130.
Both versions are great. It really is hard to choose because I have been an Amaranthe fan for longer. Going to give to the original, but if you have never listened to Amaranthe, they got some great music. As for the growls, that is just part of their genre of Metalcore.
I really like that Sabaton’s songs are historically accurate. They really do their research when they right a song about someone or historic event. I love both versions.
ALvin York was actually assigned to the 82nd Infantry Division wich later was transformed to the 82nd Airborne Division. There was no Airborne in The Great War
Both are very good but I liked Sabaton more. The reason is the song is about more than just the music. With Sabaton it is so compelling that I wanted to learn more about what they were singing about. Amaranthe had variety but more isn’t always better. I would never have looked into the story further if their version is what I heard first. It is more chaotic and I wouldn’t really want to listen to that version again. Sabaton I listen to on the daily. They are clear, heavy, and compelling.
First time watching your videos and I like what I see.. if we keep going on Sabaton you can watch primo Victoria. And stiko-per larsson and his cover of it! He is a swedish sing a song writer and made an amazing cover of primo Victoria
Not yet! But that's a solid suggestion. We did review Amon Amarth and Twilight of the Thunder God was one of the songs we picked (of course, how could we not!?) -Michael ruclips.net/video/CAlmmmwQ_rQ/видео.html
York's group had 6 men killed and three injured. He left the rest to guard the remaining prisoners. York charged the hill and was immediately challenged by six German soldier - all of which he killed. When he was up to the machine gun on the hill, the leader of the Germans surrendered and his men - all 132 men. They were marched back as prisoners to the American camp.
I think it is far easier to make a good sounding cover of a song thats made to get in your head than really write the song yourself so i am 100% with sabaton
Saw Sabaton in Oslo , Norway, in february. Amaranthe performed this live on Stage together with Sabaton. The scene presence and power both these bands have is truly unique. I said it when I saw Ameranthe play at Wembley for sabaton, they would sound so much better if the didn't have the third guy doing the scratchy screamo voice. The other two have really nice voices and their best songs are the ones with the least screamo
I agree 100%, but I guess some people like it? 🤷♂️ It's one of my beefs with Brothers of Metal and to a lesser extent the new album by Ancient Bards, even though I really like both bands. Just seems...unnecessary. -Michael
That has been Amaranthe's thing from forever, having three vocalists. And they are amazing. I don't see you bashing Sabaton for having TWO lead guitarists on top of their bassist...
@@jamescurfman3284 Mate I don't bash Sabaton for having two lead guitarists because both guitarists are good. My issue was not that they have three singers but that the screamo parts really detract from the songs. The screamo never really seems to add anything to the song and just interrupts otherwise decent songs.
Amon Amarth VS Sabaton - Twilight of the Thunder god Manowar VS Sabaton - Kingdom come Rammstein VS Sabaton - Feuer frei Twisted Sister VS Sabaton - Burn in Hell
Personal opinion, Amaranthe took the song to a new level. Their version had more dynamics and more energy. I'm not exactly a fan of either but, but from a purely objective stance, their version was just more engaging. To the people who want to bash Amaranthe, just remember this....they toured with Sabaton, were allowed to cover the song.
I think Amaranthe really killed the cover. It was really well done. I especially loved the way the harmony was constructed. However, it just lacked the raw punch that Sabaton had. I love both, but I think Sabaton kept the crown.
Simple solution... there is a live version of Sabaton and Amaranthe performing 82nd all the way together. Everyone wins! :-)

Devil Dogs is my favorite track from The Great War - didn't know there was a video coming out for it...thanks! 🤘 -Michael
Sabaton definitely wins this, although I enjoyed the Amaranth version as well. I listen to The Great War album at least three times a week on my commute.
Also, as the end of this video says, this is maybe like the fifth best song on the album...
@@Max_Griswald What's your favorite? I haven't listened to the Great War that much (too many other good albums by Sabaton) but I'd probably choose Devil Dogs. Don't know why there's so little love for that song! 🤷♂️ -Michael
@@MetalAcademix - Seven Pillars of Wisdom is my absolute favorite from the album. Devil Dogs is also a very good song, though!
For a bit more of an answer, the way I rank the songs on The Great War album is:
Seven Pillars of Wisdom
Great War
Attack of the Dead Men
Devil Dogs
The Future of Warfare
Fields of Verdun
82nd All the Way
A Ghost in the Trenches
The Red Baron
The End of the War to End All Wars
In Flanders Field
The huge caveat to that is the fact that even the songs at the bottom are great.
Amon Amarth vs Sabaton - Twilight of the Thundergod
That battle is now up: ruclips.net/video/3BqW_Te_oaQ/видео.html! Check it out and let us know who is your favorite! (and thank you for the suggestion!)
Amaranthe is awesome but Sabaton is simply better.
Cheers! -Michael
Sabaton all the way, but i have to say that Amaranthe's version is pretty awesome! 🤘🤘
Like you said- Both excellent! Very hard to choose... if I just listen to the music, probably go for Amaranth, but the video with the image's of the band Sabaton combine with the that typical sound- I vote Sabaton! 🤟
You should do a battle between Sabaton- "Defense of Moscow " and Кипелов band (Kipelov, from Aria) - song about Stalingrad- "Непокоренньй" (unconquerable) - two amazing tunes and also similar amazing videos and themes 🤟
They were touring together. There's a live version with them doing this together.

Scorpions vs Iron Maiden - The Zoo
ABBA/Helloween/Avantasia - Lay All Your Love On Me
I like Amberian Dawn's version of Lay All Your Love On Me.
@@ChrisPage68 Woohoo! A battle that is big enough to require brackets! :)
Please, would love to see you do a three way battle of Iron Maiden, Machine Head and Cradle of Filth and "Hallowed be thy name".
One of my all time favorites - that's a great idea! -Michael
As a veteran of the 101'st Airborne Division, let me say that if they would have been blasting that, it would have made it more of a fun experience. Jumping from a C 130.
You should see the live video when Sabaton does it together with Amaranthe. It's so good. Best of Sweden.🇸🇪 👌
Attack of the dead men Sabaton vs Russian cover don't know his real name
Radio Tapok is an author of the russian version. But he also was in the original for a bit
Radio Tapok has done a lot of great covers.
Both are awesome versions but they also did a live version with both bands together u should check it out
You should do:
Primo Victoria ( Van Canto + Joakim Broden vs Sabaton)
Hells Bells ( Van Canto vs AC/DC)
Thanks! We've got Van Canto vs Grave Digger in a previous episode if you haven't seen it! -Michael
@@MetalAcademix literally watching it right now :)
Loved that you watched the history channel
Recommend Sabaton’s animated story for “No Bullets Fly!”
Both versions are great. It really is hard to choose because I have been an Amaranthe fan for longer. Going to give to the original, but if you have never listened to Amaranthe, they got some great music.
As for the growls, that is just part of their genre of Metalcore.
Why don't you guys listen to Sabaton's Angels Calling with Apocalyptica???
(Maybe you already have, i don't know hahahaha)
No, we haven't (yet), thanks for the rec!
Check out Minniva and Anahata, they do amazing covers!!!
Dude. Your hair and beard are fucking epic. Masterful cultivation haha
Good barbers in Sweden! 🤣
I really like that Sabaton’s songs are historically accurate. They really do their research when they right a song about someone or historic event. I love both versions.
Small correction. The 82nd Infantry was not an Airborne division during WWI.
You guys should react to Sabaton The Seven Pillers of Wisdom.
Dio v Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver
Pink Floyd v Nightwish - High Hopes
Iron Maiden v After Forever - The Evil That Men Do
Gotcha covered on Holy Diver :)

@@MetalAcademix Didn't see that. 🤦
Haha no worries, great minds think alike! 😂
ALvin York was actually assigned to the 82nd Infantry Division wich later was transformed to the 82nd Airborne Division. There was no Airborne in The Great War
I am a Huge Sabaton fan (favourite band) but the Amaranthe version is sooo good i think the contrast between the singers is good for the song.
Love the 2 different styles
SABATON all the way but I do love the female voice
Lyrically-Amaranthe
Overall-Sabaton
BOTH ARE AWESOME!
Please react to Sabaton vs Metallica " For Whom The Bell Tolls"
This is my first time hearing Sabaton play this Im a huge fan of Amaranthe and knew it was a sabaton song but just never checked it out
That's the fun of the "battle" format, one gets to hear the richness in a song by listening to 2 very different takes! - Anamaria
You should do a Battle of the Bands video with Sabaton's song "Attack of the Dead Men" against Radio Tapok's cover, which is entirely sang in Russian.
Whoa, sounds cool - will check that out, thanks! -Michael
@@MetalAcademix It's pretty great! You're welcome!
Have u done
Amon Amarth - Twighlight of the thundergod
And
Sabaton - Twighlight of the thundergod?
Not yet! But that's a solid suggestion. We did review Amon Amarth and Twilight of the Thunder God was one of the songs we picked (of course, how could we not!?) -Michael

I always prefer the live versions when it comes to Sabaton. One of the best live bands out there.
the growls are very relevant!! its always been their thing....3 vocalists with one being a growler!! i find it very aggressive for a war song!!
Marilyn Manson - Radio Tapok - Sweet Dreams
...the variousity of the three Amaranthe voices are killer, my absolute favourite 💪
As a Swede I say cheers my friends out there🍺🤘
I think it is far easier to make a good sounding cover of a song thats made to get in your head than really write the song yourself so i am 100% with sabaton
Saw Sabaton in Oslo , Norway, in february. Amaranthe performed this live on Stage together with Sabaton. The scene presence and power both these bands have is truly unique. The video doesn't do the soundscape justice, but have a look. ruclips.net/video/k2GGYvwwa9Q/видео.html - These bands have toured together and know each other well, if there are anyone that can cover Sabaton it's Amaranthe.
Both version are hella epic !!
The screamo never really seems to add anything to the song and just interrupts otherwise decent songs.
also , we got another version of 82nd all the way from tommy johansson which is mix with disney music
Amon Amarth VS Sabaton - Twilight of the Thunder god
Manowar VS Sabaton - Kingdom come
Rammstein VS Sabaton - Feuer frei
Twisted Sister VS Sabaton - Burn in Hell
Twilight of the Thunder God Battle is out now: ruclips.net/video/3BqW_Te_oaQ/видео.html Check it out and tell us who do you like best!
I think they shared the stage for this song in Norway .
@@swingro2011 They did, there's video footage floating around on RUclips.
Losing My Religion-REM vs Lacuna Coil ! ! ! ! Or Enjoy the Silence-Depeche Mode vs Lacuna Coil ! ! !
I think Amaranthe really killed the cover. It was really well done. I especially loved the way the harmony was constructed. However, it just lacked the raw punch that Sabaton had. I love both, but I think Sabaton kept the crown.
