This set is so incredible on way too many levels. Not only is it a game 5 slammer, but it is an important moment for both of these guys. Axe was coming in off of an insane losers run beating Westballz, Matteo, S2J, Zain, SFAT, Wizzrobe, and Leffen. Axe fell short a bit throughout 2018 but showed promise at Genesis, and people were curious to see if Axe mearly got a lucky break or if we could expect more top 3 finishes. This run and this set prove that Axe is back in it and better than ever. Mang0 on the other hand found himself again on the winners side of grand finals in 2019. He came so close to glory, so close to proving he is not washed, so close to showing the world why you do not sleep on the kid, so close to proving that you can be a streamer, a father, and a champion. Yet it was all ripped away from him. This tournament Mang0 had a scare against Swedish Delight, he went down 0-2, brought it back to a game 5, and on last stock it all looked over. Then he was given one chance, and did not look back until this very set ended. Destroying SFAT and Leffen in his wake to find himself against his IronMan Demon in grand finals. The rest is history. At LTC6 when Leffen beat Hbox and rematched Hbox in grands he lost the 1st set 3-1, 2nd set 3-0, and then won the very next tournament he entered.
At Pound 2019 when mang0 beat Hbox and rematched Hbox in grands he lost the 1st set 3-1, 2nd set 3-0, and look... he won the very next tournament he entered.

I mean, it would be kinda cool if they were secretly plotting to take turns winning so everybody got some money, I wouldn't be upset.
It was a little different. Only reason Leffen took a game off Hbox was because Hbox played Ness. Mango and Hbox were close their first set, where Hbox completely stomped Leffen. Even Leffen said he basically was 6-0ed.
For the audience, this was grand finals.
For the players, this was just another Mang0/Axe Wednesday.
Ya know... this past Wednesday when mang0 and Axe did their Iron Man, mang0 said "I really need this win going into GOML" probably meaning it half heartedly but still, there was a part of him that really meant it. Axe ended up winning that Iron Man. How dope is it to see 2 of the sickest players in the scene (who put on a show for us every week) to meet in grand finals and duke it out for the world!? I don't think anyone expected this grand finals.
I love Melee.

The smile from Axe after game 4 is such a beautiful moment. There is an inner acknowledgment of the sick comeback he just made, but the smile seems to say "No matter who wins between us, this was a great day for melee"

I swear, 2019 is the year where Axe pops off. Two massive loser's runs at Genesis and GOML this year, beating Plup and Leffen respectively to make grands, showing he can overcome his demons. Plus he grabbed 1st at BoBC3 over S2J/Zain. It's only a matter of time until Axe takes a major over the very best in the game.
But let's fucking go Mango, couldn't have asked for a better person to take it over Axe

@@gonzo_o_o good prediction, aged well. Axe finished as the #4th best player in 2019 behind Hungrybox at #1, Leffen at #2, and Wizzrobe at #3. Axe also finally won a major tournament for the first time in his (and pikachu's) entire 21 year melee history

Rewatching the vod, you see that the TO was actually gesturing with his hand towards the cameras in front. He was telling Mango to pose with the ring for photo ops (annual tradition, you can find photos of Leffen and Hungrybox with their rings in past years), and then you see Mango strike a few poses for the cameras. It just looked like he was scolding Mango unfortunately LOL

M2k was there to place 9th . Mango then switched to fox still dominated the game. Is the only player in history to win evo melee 2 years in a row. Mango had a kid at a young age. Theres no way you can put all your priority on a game. Armada was the most consistent player champion top 2 of all time. M2k won the most money combine in all smash games. Hungrybox never gave up and still competes at the highest level. Mango in his prime dominated the other 4 gods. Only god to win major tournaments with 3 different characters jiggle puff, fox , and falco . Is the greatest player in history to play the game melee .

I've always said that in terms of raw skill, Axe is the goat. If, all those years ago, he had decided to dedicate himself to Fox or Falco or any viable character, imagine what he would have accomplished. Instead, he plays nothing but losing MUs, and still pops top players anyways.

I know "X is back" gets said all the time every time Hbox or Armada when back he still played won a tournament, but Mango really is back, practicing Melee on the daily and it shows.
The Mang is back.
Hungrybox out early, and neither of the players who beat him made Grand Finals. And despite that this was still one of the most dominating performances in a long time. Even when Hbox wins, he usually gets taken to game 5 at least once, but damn Mang0 was on point and destroyed everyone. Hbox gets my respect but I love seeing him getting competition, seeing a tournament where anyone could win is just so insanely hype.
This is also Axe's second grand finalist in a major this year in so expect more from him as well.
