Each car is different and if you see the previous projects in the X5, X1 and F87 M2, you have seen how much improvement comes from Soundskins! I couldn't wait to do my new G87 M2 and cut down on the higher road hiss and support the stereo upgrades. Projects like this aren't hard, just take some time and are worth the effort.
OEM dB average - 75
Stage 1 dB average - 73
Stage 2 dB average - 71

Thanks for the video! I’m not going to lie, I did expect to see a more dramatic difference in noise reduction after all that work :-/ that of course is not a criticism of you at all, but rather the soundskin product.
Understandable, when the delta on previous models was very dramatic. I will say -4 is a noticable difference, but what I can tell is more frequency shift. The car is definitely quieter for high hiss and road noise, especially in rain now that the weather has turned. I don't regret the work one bit, especially with the improved sound floor for the upgraded stereo system as well.
Not a mod on my list but who know...
Your hard work is commendable. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge for fellow g87 owners!
Thank you!
Great stuff Stefan! I watch both your install in this video. Thank you very much for putting this together. Quick question, do you know how much all the sound skins materials weighed that was installed?
So total is probably 30lbs spread out through the entire car. I often get comments about weight, but for a road car that isn't even an amount that is noticeable.
@@BMWDIYGuy that is about what I was estimating and your right about it being a daily. Plus with the lighter rims, it's a wash. Great stuff!!
@Chris-xm1iq it would be like never having a passenger, get groceries or have a full tank of gas (all much more weight) in a road car. Track car sure.. but then you have torn out the interior too! Lol
@@BMWDIYGuyI know people spending 2k on a lighter battery to safe 10-15kg
@@vollcare4076 track car.. sure.. but we all have the things we focus on. It would be like only filling half a tank to reduce weight, on a road car. -shrug-
Humans need a 3db change in order to notice a difference in perceptible level of sound, 2db is not enough to make a difference. Is 4db worth it? I would say no, just turn up your stereo one notch.
I get that.. there is also a frequency shift as well, and the higher register is reduced. The stereo is also supported by reducing the overall sound floor, especially the subs under the seats.
What I for sure learned here: even at stage 2, not even remotely worth the cost or the install time. At best, 2-3db average difference? That is near nothing. MAAAYBE the sound from the speakers has a slight improvement...but still, thank you for saving me time and money on a useless product!
*shrug* if not worth it to you, then no point in trying to convince you since you missed half of what I had to say.
@@BMWDIYGuy nah, I heard it. It's just not actually valuable. Road noise is basically not changed at all. It will NOT make the speakers sound MUCH better. Most of the "benefit" you can just get by turning up the radio by 3-5 points. Lol. Way cheaper and way easier.
If you think it's worth it, great. I appreciate your video regardless. I was interested in buying, until I saw this. 🤷♂️
@@whiteninjazx6r I appreciate that, and for dB change, this is the smallest of all the vehicles I have done. (X5 -10, F87 M2 -9, X1 -8 etc). That said, to my ears, even with upgraded speakers it really helps to support them overall. The other thing I didnt measure is frequency change, but you definitely notice the higher register of road noise is almost gone. The matting under the subs too makes a significant difference immediately. To me, absolutely worth it, but folks drive differently and thats ok. Thanks for watching!
wear ear plugs
Which ruins the stereo 8)
