The HHR (Heritage High Roof) was inspired by early generations of the Suburban, but (fun fact) was designed by the same guy who was responsible for the PT Cruiser. That would make it both a tribute AND a ripoff.
No, the PT Cruisers really only had one big problem and that was the blown head gasket by 75,000 miles on EVERY SINGLE one. Which was EASILY fixed with the addition of an MLS replacement head gasket, and you were good to go for the next 200,000 miles. The supposed transmission problems were created from insufficient cooling due to the extreme overheating problems the engines had.
My favorite is the 89-97 Ford Thunderbird. It is a rip off of the BMW 6 Series. I drove those almost my whole adult life. They came with a V8 and were very cost effective. The last one I bought was in 97 and it was loaded with leather seats and a V8 and only cost 25k. I put 300k miles on it before I let her go and got a Caddy CTS-V.
I always thought the BMW 3.0 SC and the later 635 coupes were a design inspiration for Acura's 1st gen legend coupe and then Fords Super Coupe thunderbirds in the 90s.
The Miata has been a great car for over 30 years. Unfortunately, Hoovie will never be able to fit in one, but April could. April should review a Miata, and see if she likes it.
A Demon 170 would be something completely unheard of. A factory-made 1000+ horsepower drag car that can be officially outfitted with a parachute? Insane.
Love your content. Been watching for a couple years. I just wish everyone could stop hating on the PT. I'm on my second one. I find them to be comfortable, practical, and capable. I'm not into speed or going around corners on rails. It's called a cruiser for a reason. And I love the styling. Admittedly, I thought they messed it up with the convertible. But now I own the GT version of one. It's a lot more fun then the base wagon I owned. It sits more like a roadster. And that's the.way I look at it. Admittedly, I spent too much sorting it out. But when I buy something I like, I plan on keeping it for as long as I can. Anyway, they're not as bad as you think. I still enjoy your content, though.
April is apparently not familiar with classic styling... Also, both cars were designed by the same person. I would argue the PT Cruiser is much better built and I see a lot more them around still than I do HHRs or even the Cobalts they were based on. I literally use a PT Cruiser for a snow plow, it handles my 400 lbs snow blade no problem.
Some PT Cruisers were exported to Europe, it was also sold here with some weak engines like 1.6 :) You can still see them -- but no HHR, maybe there are some - but very rare. You never see them here.
@@kuebby In Europe ? What country ? I know there are some, but very rare. PT Cruisers you can still see in normal traffic sometimes as they were sold here. Slowly they are classic cars as they can be 25 years old next year and the newest ones will be 15 :)
What about the Mercedes CLS? If memory serves me correctly, then I'm sure it was the first "four-door coupe" to market. But I think the Panamera is a better alternative (ripoff).
The early Acuras aped the BMWs of the time in styling as well. I loved an early comment on the HHR, "It's a PT Cruiser for someone who wouldn't get caught dead in a Chrysler". 😂
My $.02. The PT Cruser was a good thing to drive until you had to pay to get the timing belt changed. The C8 is impossible for mature adults to get into. I tried, no sale.
Pt Cruiser was first, and GM hired its designer to do the HHR. I hate them both, but my in-laws put over 230,000 miles on an HHR before replacing it with my 2001 Ford Ranger, which now has around 170,000 miles.
The most recent example of styling ripoff, Hyundai's Santa Fe copy of the Range Rover. I saw one earlier this week while at a stop light and Wow! A side from a slightly lower ride height it would easily be mistaken for a Range Rover.

Mazda Mx-5 looked like 1960s Lotus Elan. But it wasn't a modern Lotus Elan. It was cheaper, less extreme and more popular. Mazda MX-5 was a modern Triumph Spitfire.
While we do have some choice when it comes to car buying in America, there are still plenty of other brands and makes we haven't even Heard of in the state. That's why they should get rid of that stupid import law, prohibiting imports for 25 years.
