@Clense Clan It is. Basically it crosses the frequencies of the drivers. There are a lot of reasons for this, including distortion, driver limitations and even dispersion.
@Clense Clan the best sound will always come from something you design or have design for you. But you can buy pre-made crossovers. You would need to figure out and attenuation circuit for the Tweeter though. Basically, the Tweeter will play louder if you don't attenuate it
Yea I learned a bit. Now I need to watch it ten more times with materials in front of me. We would love more of these on every speaker build. Don't even edit it, I'll watch all 3-300 minutes of video lol.
I am new to speaker passive crossover diy. 1st what is the purpose of a speaker passive crossover? 2nd What are each component and what role do they play? 3rd How do you build a quality speaker passive crossover?
Those are all good questions. I can;t really explain all of it on here, it is way too detailed to get to it. In fact, literal books have been written on the subject. however, I did create an online video series that introduces newcomers into how to build a quality crossover network. That should answer most of your questions. That can be found here: ruclips.net/p/PL6hjpiCHZmIPx3itPeTt7zoSqNY20OQqV As far as what the purpose is...basically each driver in a speaker has a certain frequency range at which it works at. If you power it past it's range, you can damage the driver and add distortion. A passive crossover is designed to crossover the signal and power to the individual drivers for the best sounding (and power handling) speaker. I hope this helps you :)
Very helpful! Can you do a video on how to balance two different speaker sensitivities using resistors. (if that method is possible) I'm a new to crossover building.
That is a great question and I think a lot of people have it. Have you seen this video yet, it should help: ruclips.net/video/BDlPswC5U8U/видео.html It uses the free Program which is in the description. If you do not know how to get FRD and ZMA files, this video will also help. ruclips.net/video/Fm6tsj9Tpqs/видео.html
123Toid thank you so much! That video was very helpful. I'm building some 2 way pa speakers using a Dayton pro 12" woofer (96db sensitivity) and a prv 280ti horn (108 sensitivity). That's why I asked because they have different sensitivity ratings. Finding crossover components that have the power handling and affordability is tricky. Thanks for the great videos! 😄
It's not often, but when I see it I have to say it. When it comes to speakers, you know what you're talking about! Electrolytic Capacitors are so universal, but I seen them go bad so much I avoid them when I can. The problem is they get a little old or they get a small spike and the get leaky meaning they pass DC current and speakers don't like DC. I work on computers and other electronics like guitar amps so for this I would go with Poly Caps, they last and they play well with audio. what's the cost difference between them and or why do you prefer the Electrolytic Capacitors?
Thank you and great points. I don't prefer electrolytic caps. I prefer poly or film and foil. However, on small inexpensive builds, I have no problems with anyone that wants to use electrolytic. I personally test with electrolytic, since they are so cheap and easy to keep in stock. But on my higher end builds, I only use poly and or film and foil.
Hello, Im learning about Crossover building now and have been seeing your other vids (learned tons thanks!). So I know this is a 1 year old video, but is there newer video for this (or one that you might recommend for me)? I mean it in the sense that what you are doing with the board and parts (the connexions) is out of frame on some parts, so I got lost quickly :p Thanks :)
I never did a second video on this, but I plan to soon. just make sure your subscribe didn't have that Bell hit and you'll see it as soon as it comes out
hello, how to connect 3 speakers in Crossover IN out T and W ,my car have Under seat Sub BMW f30 and doors speakers with Tweet ,my amp out 4 ohm ,sub under seat 4ohm and doors 4ohm speakers build in Tweet , jumper wire around the capacitor to bypass it, serial or parallel connect and this Crossover filter 4 ohm??Thank u
Maybe you can answer my question. I am looking for education on how to translate a schematic into reality. Your video started to do this by explaining how a common ground can be recognized on the schematic. But that was not the purpose of your video so explanations ended and assembly of the crossover began. Do you know of any site on the Internet, book, or RUclips channel that explains these things for beginners? I have personally been searching for about a month and the beginning of your video was about the closest I’ve seen. If you have any idea where I can look, it would be appreciated.
David Wels opinion on not their premade? I would assume they are good, they use quality components. However, since I always make custom, I don't have any first hand experience with the premade ones.
davefred3 I usually put the parts that I use in the description. But here it is for you. www.parts-express.com/black-perforated-large-hole-crossover-board-pair-35-x-5--260-186
@123Toid.... Hi. I have a question regarding a 1st order two-way crossover with BSC filter and high pass filter (HPF) on the woofer. Power amp + ----------- C1(HPF@9KHz)----------R1(8 Ohm LPAD)------------ + Tweeter + ---- L2 R2 (BSC@1400Hz)----L1(LPF@9KHz)----C2 (HPF@150Hz)----+ Woofer Is this the correct way to connect the high pass filter (HPF) on the woofer ? The set up is a 2.1 and the 2.0 Woofer + Tweeter will be supported by a 0.1 Subwoofer from 150Hz down.
bsl bl the capacitor on the woofer should connect to both the positive and negative on the woofer. That's what you're referring to then it sounds right
123Toid .... thanks. You mean the HPF on the woofer should be attached to the +ve and -ve terminals of the woofer? Is there some way i can PM or email you the layout?
Personal preference. A lost of people use solid core on the woofer and air core on the tweeter. But honestly, most people cannot hear a difference sonically, and the solid core were on clearance.
Look somewhere else as you can see by his answer he doesn't want you know the real answer he wants you to buy pre made stuff from him or his sponsor . his sponsor would be more than happy to assist you & sell you what you need without his B's interference
Dude I know you are good at what your doing but you basically make the newbies give up before they even start show them how to make 1st order crossovers with l-pads but you won't because you think they will buy your kits instead your scaring them away & they just buy factory pre made speakers
Thanks alot @123Toid Excellent
Your Welcome! Thank you for the great idea. If you ever have any more, don't be afraid to ask!
Would definetly.

Excellent guide. I always look forward to your uploads, thanks
I have to build some better crossovers for my TDL's, this video has been more help than most. Well done matey.
Keep looking you don't need resistors in your crossovers
Thanks show me the 3 way speaker crossover connection
Awesome Video!
Nicely done!
Thank you
I think I need to watch this on a big screen and not my iPhone . Lol
nice video
Thanks for ur video it help me
You're welcome. I'm glad to hear that Please subscribe if you're not already. It's a huge help to me. :)
Nice explanation, but keep your nomenclatures clear, Ohms is for Reisitors, Mili Henry (mH) is for inductors and Micro Farad (uF) is for Capacitors.
Cool thanks!
How good would this speaker sound? Can you do a sound demo?
I wonder if it would beat out ELAC debut
I am new to speaker passive crossover diy. 1st what is the purpose of a speaker passive crossover? 2nd What are each component and what role do they play? 3rd How do you build a quality speaker passive crossover?

What kind of load could this handle? How many watts?

Should I twist the connection together before soldering ?
It doesn't hurt

much of the "demonstration" was off camera. I could not see the what he was doing.
Yeah that was horrible. I'm more confused than I was before.

How many watts RMS can it handle?
I've made my own speakers since 1975, but I've always used pre-made crossovers-how do you rate the ones from PE, especially the newer ones??
David Wels opinion on not their premade? I would assume they are good, they use quality components. However, since I always make custom, I don't have any first hand experience with the premade ones.
Hi brother 3vay spelers in 6inch midreng spker capasitar vellyou tellmi how is uf and v ?
What type of board are you using (proper name, price, where did you get it)?

I have a crossover which is designed for a 4-ohm system, what happens if I use that crossover with an 8-ohm speakers?
Tuning will change significantly.
double the values on the coils and half the values on the caps
Why is the .38 mH a solid core inductor and not an air core?
Personal preference. A lost of people use solid core on the woofer and air core on the tweeter. But honestly, most people cannot hear a difference sonically, and the solid core were on clearance.
Can you use your crossover build on any speaker drive no matter the size?
Crossover is designed for a specific combination of drivers and baffle. Change any of these and that crossover might no longer work correctly.
Look somewhere else as you can see by his answer he doesn't want you know the real answer he wants you to buy pre made stuff from him or his sponsor . his sponsor would be more than happy to assist you & sell you what you need without his B's interference
hi bro nice vid ..on the spec what speaker is the tweet and sub?
This particular schematic is for the Dayton ND65-4 and the Dayton ND20FB-4. I'll have a build video for it out once i get some replacement ND65's in.
is there any software that can design a 4way crossover? (tweeter+mid+midbass+bass)
Just X-sim, but you have to manually design it.
i saw a video now.. so u have to do it manually and u have to know what u are doing :(
i raul yes
You can do it
I was so proud of my 4th order LR crossover schematic until I realized that all these components won't fit on the circuit board... crying in mH
Dude I know you are good at what your doing but you basically make the newbies give up before they even start show them how to make 1st order crossovers with l-pads but you won't because you think they will buy your kits instead your scaring them away & they just buy factory pre made speakers
Haha......everything out of cameras screen .....go fish....that's the point of the video..... dampener esp for beginners.
most of what you're explaining is off camera, sorry but this is ridiculously amateur camera work and the explanation is incoherent
It's deliberate the guy knows his shit but he doesn't want to teach you
