Nice cases, but viewers might want to be careful applying the glue anywhere near the tape locations. Capillary action may pull the glue out along the tape edges which can really ruin the job. You may want to tack in between the tape locations, and after this has set, remove the tape and do the rest of the seam. Professional case maker here.
Jan. 24, 2021----Thanks for the video for several reasons. Didn't know there were saw blades designed for cutting plexiglass. I've always used a plexiglass knife cutter for this. Another is using tape to hold all the pieces together to make gluing everything A LOT easier. Been 15-20 years since building an individual display case as I bought a store display case which now keeps all my models dust free. But will remember to use Weld On in the future.
I've watched a bunch of videos that made this process was too complicated. This was so much easier to follow. I have a model of the Atlas Titan from the Titanfall collectors edition and I've always wanted a case for it because it gets so dusty. I have cases for my smaller models but the Atlas is pretty damn big and buying or having a custom case made is ridiculously expensive. This video made everything so much easier.
I found this video because I need to replicate display covers my Papa made in the early 70s, for some copper artworks je made. His covers have angled edges for the inside corners, and I'm hoping i can do as perfect a job as he did back then to surprise my sister with them.
Oh no...now i have to get off the bed & go down to basement for some math calculations! 🥱🙂 Happy (and healthy) New Year from across the pond, Mr Budzik! 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣1️⃣🥂
Thanks! Really great tutorial! I was looking into getting some new plastic display cases, but don't want to spend over $150 for basic scales (1/24 and 1/35). This is motivating me to try it myself. Are you planning on doing a tutorial on making the base?
I've made several cases over the years using the same materials. The biggest one was for the Revell 1/72 Uboat. If you're using really thin glue be careful not to let it seep under the tape holding the case together or you'll have a terrible mess. Ask me how I know.
As always, thank you for your excellent presentation. Quick question, does the Weld on effect the rubber stopper or the plastic in the syringes? I’ve tried using medical grade syringes and the cement tends to interfere with their function
Thank you! I just watched a 39 minute video that covered everything your 4 minute video covered. With the syringe, were you pushing it I while applying the weld or does it just flow on its own? I did one last year with the bottle and it was almost impossible not to drip onto the plastic.
How many MM thick are you using here? I'm looking just now it's 2mm 4mm 5mm etc I've just done the 1.48 elco 80 pt boat so want it in a case I hate dust getting on my model's on the shelf it's a weekly clean job especially when airbrushing in same room!
Great video and very helpful. Is the glue you use in a watery liquid form ? I’m using Tensol 12 and it’s thick and doesn’t really flow via capillary action. I’m in the UK and there’s not much choice here. I’ve just spoilt my first case with uncontrollable blobs of treacle like glue !
I use Weld-on 4 for some of my display cases and it's extremely thin and waterlike. It runs right into all the crevices to create a tight bond. You do need to be careful with it though because it can drip onto your project or pool at the bottom and it will ruin anywhere it touches the acrylic. If you're having trouble finding Weld-on you might try searching for methylene chloride, that's the active chemical in Weld-on that breaks down the acrylic so it can weld itself together. There are other brands of the stuff I believe.
Great content! Your camera angles though made me think you had stuck the thing to the wall it took me a minute to realize that was a table and not a wall 😂
@@scale-model-workshop haha hey it happens! I’m gonna build the 1/24 AirFix Hellcat and have been thinking of making a display for it, and this tutorial was pure 🔥🔥🔥 so thanks to you I now know exactly what I’m gonna do!
I have to look for an equivalent for 'weld-on' here in Europe... I've started a long time ago such a display case but I failed once I got to glue the pieces together. I wish you a happy new year in 2021!
Happy New Year Radu! Weldon #4 seems to be basically MEK. Weldon #3 smells just like the self curing monomer we use for dental acrylic, known as Poly methyl methacrylate.
Just try to use Acetone. Thats what works in my case for building my own display cases. It needs a few hours to dry but is cheap and everywhere available.
@Radu B. if you know Italian and like to mess with chemistry look at this link and you will do it yourself ruclips.net/video/h7y6xu1G0Q8/видео.html&ab_channel=Kaoslaleggenda pay attention to the chemical reaction that must occur at low temperature (in fact the containers are immersed in water and ice) nothing dangerous but if it occurs at high temperature the result will be poor
how do you drill a hole in acrylic case if you want to use hardware to attach something to the walls? any other suggestions to attach items to the walls of a case?
Ive drilled into acrylic before with just a standard drill bit on my cordless drill or drill press. The only thing is it can crack easily. I found putting masking tape on both sides of the acrylic in the place where the hole will be and then drilling through the tape helps stop the cracks.
Hi Paul, You can further improve dust proofness if you cut a stripe of felt and place on the wooden basis where the 'glass box' touches. Happy new year, please keep us entertained!
This is how videos should be made. Straight forward and to the point without incessant talk, flash and noise. Thank you.

This was very informative and well done. I’m using lexan which I think is the same as acrylic? Cheers!
Hi and many thanks for the great videos. I am in France and cannot manage to get some Weld On 4. Would you know any alternative?

What router bit did you use on the wood base?
As always, thank you for your excellent presentation. Quick question, does the Weld on effect the rubber stopper or the plastic in the syringes? I’ve tried using medical grade syringes and the cement tends to interfere with their function
To date, I've not noticed any issues.
No, it's a solvent which melts only styrenes, not rubber.

Do you have any issues with the glue running out and following the tape, you have holding everything together (capillary action)?

Much cheaper to DIY like your video expresses. Trying to buy premade at 1/200 scale will be very expensive....
How do you make the mating surfaces perfectly flush because you cant sand clear acrylic like wood it will be ruined?
Where did you get your base?

Why acrylic glass? Could you share why you chose it against plexiglass
Plexiglass is a brand name of acrylic glass. It's kind of like how all cyanoacrylic glue is referred to as 'Superglue'
