Super Castlevania 4 (SNES) - Forest of Monsters Stage 2 Theme (All Instrument Cover)

- About time for another SNES song, this is the Forest of Monsters theme from Super Castlevania 4, otherwise known as the Stage 2 theme! This is a classic, moody piece that's one of several standouts on Castlevania 4, featuring a memorable bass line, eerie keyboard parts, and drums that feature an unusual amount of distortion and gated reverb!
For tracking, I used a number of stock sounds on the Yamaha PSR-282, which for a sub-professional keyboard, actually sound pretty good with a minor amount of reverb and delay added. The church organ part was the most difficult to learn, requiring about 3 weeks to get the various patterns internalized. The bass was also surprisingly difficult on this song, some of the fills particularly in the turn around section were quite difficult to get up to tempo. Lastly, the main drum fill in the song (the one that begins the song), is simply not an easy pattern and also took quite a bit of repetition to get to tempo. Finally, I added a guitar part that mainly doubles a few of the main keyboard parts in the song, and used it in lieu of the solo in the turn around section. I think I probably could have learned this solo on keyboard, but I wanted something in the arrangement to differ from the SNES soundtrack a little. The guitar is double tracked, as well as the bass. I double tracked the bass to get just a little more attack on a few of the fills that got lost in the mix in my initial take.

I never had the chance to play any Castlevania as a kid, but I'm playing it now and even it's hard as hell and I don't think I could beat it, I'll never get tired of any of the stages. It's fun, has incredible music and the levels are so well designed. It's one of my favorite games ever!
Classic series, particularly from 1 thru 4! I was lucky enough to play them growing up, so when 4 came out and I got my hands on a copy while that was also still at the forefront of videogame graphics, it was mindblowing! Keep at it, 4 might be slightly easier to beat than 3 and 1! Cheers!
One of my favorite sound tracks of all time. Nicely done
Definitely, this soundtrack ranks pretty highly for me too, every song on it is a classic on top of all the genre hopping! One of those inspired soundtracks for sure!
Me to
Parabéns 🎉
Pode fazer o cover das outras como a dos lustres e a da ponte.
Very nicely done. Castlevania 4 has some of the best video game music ever
Cheers! Totally, even the ambient connecting tracks are epic, such a great soundtrack!
I always replay this level for the music. Well done!!
Such a mood this tune conveys! Cheers!!
SICK !
Cheers!!!
Amazing choice of sounds man , so nostalgic ,thanks for sharing your work
Hey, thanks! It was a happy accident that the very old keyboard I'm using happens to have a bunch of patches that sound extraordinarily close to SNES sounds! I did a Super Metroid cover that some of the patches almost sound exact!
Hell yeah man, always loved the drums and bass in this particular track, great cover
Thanks! This tune is definitely one of the standout tracks on a stacked soundtrack, Castlevania 4 really went all out on the music! The pocket on this tune with the bass and drums is nice and deep!
I love this song, i love castlevania! Thank you for this masterpiece!
Awesome! This song was crazy fun to put together even with how hard it was to learn that organ part! Great tune!
Guitar solos are perfect!!! Thank you!
Cheers!!!
This is really good!!😊
Great source song from a fantastic soundtrack, cheers!!
I'm stunned to find this song so under covered.
Agreed, it's a great tune and not too rough to play (aside from that organ part!)!
@@thesosomusician You think you could do "Treasury Room" from that game sometime? I can't find that one hardly at all either.
That's a good tune, although the instrumentation is a bit outside of my wheelhouse. I'd have to think about the arrangement to do it justice, but it's probably doable.
@@thesosomusician I understand. Guess that's why it's not done much.
Hard to say for sure, definitely the arrangements for most of the soundtrack are pretty dense, so it's a commitment to put together a tune, but you'd still think there'd be covers of just about the whole thing. I'll do some research on it, it's a good tune
Impressive. Love your bass tone. Should have more views.
Thanks, I appreciate it! I go for that gritty, aggressive bass tone, which they really dialed in well on the SNES on SC4, and super fun bassline to play to boot!
EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers!!!
Besides the nostalgia, if there was an Ikea in Japan during Halloween, it would sound like this 😊
Note to self, do all ikea shopping in Japan in October, because the store plays slamming tunes!
the most experimental and incredible OST of all Castlevania ... your cover is really good !
Thanks! It really is an experimental OST, the range of styles in just the third stage alone (ambient mysterious, ambient dark, and jazz fusion!) is astonishing!
Good stuff man!
Cheers! Fun tune to play for sure!
Great keyboard sounds for this
That keyboard is equipped with stock SNES and N64 quality patches, it's great! That organ line is the toughest thing I've tracked on keys except maybe for the Jolly tune
Super Castlevania 4 is my childhood, great cover.
Thanks! In addition to the great soundtrack, it's a great game, I always thought it even held up in comparison to Symphony of the Night, classic games indeed!
@@thesosomusician for me it was the better game, I know allot would disagree but it resonated with me for some reason.
I like the rpg element in SOTN but castlevania 4 is kind of the last classic castlevania to me. What's a castlevania without stairs anyway?!
Possibly best Forest of Monsters cover C4
Thanks! I appreciate it, the keyboard part on this one was particularly tough for me but very fun!
My favorite one
Cheers, great tune!
Supercv4 not often covered, well done.
Thanks! Super Castlevania 4 has such a great soundtrack, so many great tunes!
Extremely satisfying to see and listen to. Great job!
Awesome, thank you! Classic tune with an awesome bassline!
Excellent ! Well done !!!
Cheers! Tough tune to get under my fingers, but super fun to learn!
@@thesosomusician I'm also going to play castlevania on RUclips. I can't wait to get started, there's a lot to do! That’s a good song you played!
Awesome! So many great songs from the first 4 games with the SNES soundtrack being particularly awesome! All the instruments are always playing interesting lines.
My favorite track in the game !
Nice! Tough for me to narrow down to one favorite track, there's about 5-6 that are just go hard! This is definitely one of those ones!
Hey that's the forgotten one and one of my favorites. Awesome job!
Thanks! The whole Castlevania 4 soundtrack is top tier, with this tune amongst the best of the best!
🏰 Simon is the best
Dude yes! Thanks for noticing this super thumpy, eerie, moody track. I’m trying to play the bass riff now but it is surprisingly funky and tricky to get just right.
We’ll played!
Cheers! This song's definitely a highly on the Castlevania 4 soundtrack, so moody! The bass line is super rough, I think it specifically contributed to me getting a touch of tendonitis in my left thumb from rehearsing it earlier this year. Super fun to play, as well as that organ line, lots of cool stuff in this song!
Topped the original. You caught the feeling the original had and did something you'd like. It's perfect.
Cheers! It was a real fun tune to put together too, once I was able to get some of the keyboard parts under my fingers. That organ part was quite the challenge!
El Mejor "Soundtrak" que e escuchado y el mejor "Level" de esta Obramaestra con Sentimiento y los Violines Gracias "Konami" en Super Castlevania 4;!👍👁👁👁👁👁👁👍👍👍👍
Cheers! I'm a big fan of NES and SNES Konami soundtracks, and Super Castlevania 4 is definitely one of the best of all, so many great tunes!
First time visiting this channel (which definitely deserves a lot more views) - great Castlevania cover. I checked out some of the other videos while I was here and they're also good - sound quality is much better now than the earlier years. A couple cover suggestions I have are from Fire Emblem Echoes (these are both battle themes):
What Lies at the End
Sacrifice and the Saint
Hey, thanks so much, I'm glad you're getting a kick out of the channel, this tune was real fun to play! The channel was originally an exercise to get me to practice my other instruments more, but it really morphed into also learning sound engineering which I've been teaching myself now for about two years and change. I'm hoping to start upgrading the video quality too in the not distant future!
I never played anything in the Fire Emblem series, but I'll check out the tunes, I've gotten exposed to some great music I hadn't heard before from people making suggestions for the channel, I'll check out the tunes!
Thanks again, I'm always putting out new songs, so stick around!
nice ;)
Cheers!!!
Oh fuck yea ! Stage is my favorite as far as the soundtrack. Bass line is sick , I didn’t think anyone would be able to replicate it. Got a flea vibe. Bad ass . Dude do the whole soundtrack!
Cheers! The whole SC4 soundtrack slays for sure! There's a couple of other songs that might be doable for me, but alot of them are crazy hard and beyond my ability! That intro piano line in the Chandeliers tune would snap my wrists right off! Pretty high probability though I will be revisiting a song or two on this soundtrack in the future!
@@thesosomusician Perhaps the cavern/ labrynth stage . A mellow acoustic version
The 3-1 Cavern tune is nice and laid back, and the 3-2 one is nicely ambient. Those weren't originally on my list of tunes, but I'll kick 3-1 around, could be fun to put together.
Sidenote, the 20+ year old keyboard I use as a midi controller has some built in patches that are straight up SNES/N64 quality, sometimes it's uncannily close!
@@thesosomusician yea 3-1 is an ambient laid back tune. Dude this game back when I was young opened up my imagination, and it was all because of the music and scenery of the game and it’s brilliance especially at that time .
It's really the pinnacle of classic Castlevania, it's the best of the original style. I liked some of the rpg light elements introduced in Symphony of the Night, but SC4 is the best of the original style, such a great game!
everything on point tbh, great job :)
Thanks! I was really happy with the way this one came, it made tackling the tricky to play parts worth it!
❤❤❤❤❤
Cheers!
AMAZING !
Cheers, glad you dig the video!!!
well done, I love it. Congrats!
Thanks! Such a great tune, definitely fun to play in spite of the rather tough keyboard parts (tough for me at least!)!
AWESOME!!!!!!
Cheers!!!
holy sh1t!! 😮
Cheers!!!
Super cool 😊
Thanks!
Well done!
Cheers! Such a great tune from a great soundtrack!
That's sounds good
Thanks, great song on a classic soundtrack!
Another great
Thanks! Should be interesting in a couple of months if I keep up on the keyboard playing, definitely making some progress on it.
Great
Cheers!
I also struggle to copy that intro :D
It's a rough pattern, definitely not a typical pattern on the kit!
🙇♂️💓🍀🎶 🤘😃
Cheers!
n1 work mate more
Cheers!
this is the second cover i've watched that doesnt try to do the actual drum parts
Considering the original song doesn't have a full drumkit part, I'd think the it'd be surprising to find one to one drum covers of this one ;-)
@@thesosomusician do you not understand i'm talking about the syncopated percussion sounds in the original that are missing in your version? it's very obvious.
If you're talking about the congas that come in on the 2nd time around, yup, I didn't include that in the drumkit arrangement I did. If I had congas or a good vst conga sound, I would possibly have added it in. Toms on the drumkit wouldn't really emulate that bit too well.
@@absoluteegocalm down
The hi-hat needs to be tighter during the off beats
I definitely don't get to work on opening the hihat pedal as much as I'd like.
Excellent ! Well done !!!
