I'm Bill Angelini, a multi-instrumentalist from Queens, NY. I created this channel a few years ago to force myself to practice more guitar and bass, in addition to my main instrument, drums. Since then, and because of the channel, I've begun teaching myself keyboards, video editing, and since mid-2020, audio engineering. It's been a great experience for me so far, and I've learned a number of songs for videos that I wasn't able to play when I started the channel, let alone record them passably! Stay tuned to the channel to see what else a regular musician can accomplish from practice and self-education!
In Flames - Gyroscope (All Instrument Cover)
Here's a cover of the third track from In Flames' 1997 album Whoracle, called Gyroscope! This is a classic In Flames song featuring twin harmonized guitars way out at the forefront of the song set to a 6/8 waltz type feel. The chorus almost has a drinking song feel to it, particularly implied by the bass line. Real cool stuff from the classic era of the band.
For my cover, the puzzle was to figure out how to track the extra layers of guitars found on the studio version of the track. Since my recording process is full song takes of each instrument, it was tricky to figure out how to track the extra harmony layers on the verses, and the rhythm guitars in the bridges. Once I settled on a game...

Skate or Die 2 (NES) - Streets/Stage 1 Theme (All Instrument Cover)
Просмотров 15614 дней назад
It's about time to return to the soundtrack of 1990's NES classic, Skate or Die 2: The Search for Double Trouble! This is the theme for the streets area, the first stage of the adventure portion of the game. Unusual for the NES but found throughout this soundtrack, there are a multitude of digitized samples, with a bombastic kick and snare drum sound blasting over a memorable lead melody. This ...

This is Theme of Laura, the tune from the intro movie of 2001's Silent Hill 2, released on the playstation 2! This song was composed by Akira Yamaoka, who scored a huge amount of music for the series on multiple platforms, including the recently released Silent Hill 2 remake. This tune is a real centerpiece composition for the series, featuring its signature melancholy melodies combined with ro...

It's been about 4.5 years since I jammed out a tune from Little Nemo: The Dream Master, a game released in 1990 on the NES! This game is tied to a 1989 Japanese cartoon movie, which if you've never seen (like me), made for a rather confusing experience as characters are introduced in the game with no explanation! What wasn't confusing is this game has a soundtrack that features several stand ou...
Katatonia - Brave (All Instrument Cover w/ Vox)

Here's the opening track of Katatonia's 1996 album Brave Murder Day, aptly title Brave! This is the 2nd record by Katatonia, on which singer/drummer Jonas Renkse had already stopped doing growls, instead enlisting friend Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth to handle the growls. I discovered this record probably around 2000-2001 via Opeth, but didn't really keep up with the band. Imagine my surprise whe...

Here's another tune from 1990's Mega Man 3 on the NES, it's the Top Man theme. This is a relatively straightforward but rocking tune that features some bluesy chromatic notes in the intro and turnaround and a somewhat unusual harmony of the first riff after the intro. The main verse part has a nice call and response between the two melody parts which is clever in spite of its melodic simplicity...

Here's a cover of Shake Hands With Beef, the lead single on Primus' 1997 record Brown Album! Shake Hands With Beef is one of those tunes that is more or less an entire song made out of one riff, something Tom Petty is particularly known for. The song features a loosely improvised drum part that is loaded with idiosyncratic character from Bryan "Brain" Mantia that is nearly uncopyable, rock soli...

Here's another classic track from 1990's Ninja Gaiden 2 on the NES, called The Parasprinter (also known as the Tower of Lahja and the Act 3-2 Theme). There's nothing two fancy about this theme, however, each of its 3 parts are extremely memorable hooks. Sometimes simplicity is where it's at. For tracking, in addition to playing the main melodies on guitar, I also added some layers of keyboards ...

Here's the iconic theme from 1988's mega NES hit, Super Mario Bros 2! This tune is a classic of classics composed by Koji Kondo (composer for the original Super Mario Brothers soundtrack as well as a slew of other works). In spite of being a very playful tune, the composition is complex featuring counterpoint harmony, chromatic dissonance, and a walking bass line. This whole arrangement is pack...

Here's a cover of Sonatina in G Opus 47 BVW 801, better known as Wendy's Theme from 1990's Maniac Mansion on the NES! This is quite the tune, sounding vaguely Bach-ish, and containing what sounds like maybe a Picardy Third or a Neapolitan 6th chord, definitely something above my pay grade for music analysis! I'm not sure how rough this tune is to play on a keyboard, but on guitar it's pretty ro...
Mega Man 2 & 3 (NES) - Hard Man & Wood Man Themes (Consult Doctor 4 Medleys Longer Than 4 Hrs)

Here's a medley I made of the Hard Man theme from Mega Man 3 and Wood Man theme from Mega Man 2, both released on the NES in 1988 and 1990 respectively. The Hard Man theme is a pretty classic MM3 tune featuring a three part melody at all points that is both melodically and rhythmically complicated. It's a great example of composing a technically sophisticated tune with very few melodic options,...

Amazing drumming, amazing guitars and amazing shirt. Subscribed! 🤘
Cheers sir! For drum stuff, check out my recent Little Nemo and Duck Tales videos, the audio engineering is much better, and I snuck in drum solos to both! Will be checking out your channel after knocking out some chores
Ironically enough this was my first double dragon game and because it's so hard, this stage's theme was engraved into my head but man is it good!! Thanks for this man!
The DD3 soundtrack is surprisingly good, I think it's a little underrated because the game quality itself was a little dodgy compare to the first two. This tune is particularly good, with both Egypt tunes and the Italy tune being pretty noteworthy too! The Mummies and Cleopatra at the end were a beast to figure out how to beat before the internet, I've watched some speedruns and almost got angry how easy they are when you know the trick to them!
Yes! I was waiting for this theme! Hell yeah!! Good playing as aways my dude!!! SKATE STRAIGHT! ROCK N' ROLL!
This one was deceptively tough to learn! That middle 8 measure of tapping runs was tougher than the Title Screen tapping, maniacal stuff! Fun, but maniacal!
Do Leaches next! Or anything off Come Clairity really!
I actually fell off In Flames after Clayman, Reroute to Remain didn't connect to me although on a recent revisit, I found it was more the production than the song quality that bothered me. I checked out the 3 newest records and thought they were pretty decent, but I haven't checked out Come Clarity yet. Probably will be a bit before I do another In Flames tune but I gotta check out Come Clarity!
Just checked out Leeches, gotta be good at singing to do that one!!! The solo section in that one is particularly good, cool tune! If I can ever get my vocals ok enough that Leeches is under heavy consideration, this channel would definitely be a major personal success! I'm going to keep grinding, who knows, right!
Should have more view!!!!
Ha, it's creeping up slowly! Cheers!!
Awesome 👌
Cheers!!
That's what I wanted. A faithful reproduction as possible of the soundtrack in a real band, and not a bunch of "metal covers", congratulations
This arrangement really got helped because the keyboard I use has patches built into it that are pretty authentic SNES and N64 quality, some of them are really uncanny! Glad you enjoyed, cheers!!
amazing
Cheers!!
You´re very talented nice job!
Cheers! This one was a fun puzzle to put together, it's a masterclass in song composition!
Heck yeah! That tapping part was really cool.
It took me about a month of practice to get it there, really tough phrasing!
YES
Cheers!!
Skate or Die. A game series with mini games that were sometimes hard to figure out, but good music
For sure, classic series with classic soundtracks!
Have you done Razor’s theme yet?
I haven't done Razor, Dave, or Bernard's themes yet. I'm not 100% I can pull off Razor's, there's a few runs in there on guitar that I'm not sure I can get under my fingers, although I gotta work on a transcription first to be sure. Some tunes are super hard to play on guitar but this is a soundtrack if I can hit all the main themes, I will!
Impressive
Thanks! This one it took three attempts over about 4 years before I finally had worked up it, definitely glad I waited!
👌💯
Cheers!
Thank you for the cover! Good job
Thanks! Gotta rock the Dethklok!
Amazing!
Thanks, cheers!!
badass man
Such a heavy tune, cheers!
Awesome cover ....glad to see people who have grown older still appreciates 8bit and video game music like me😅
Cheers! Nes music is really what got me into music, until later on when I discovered prog rock! Nes soundtracks are masterclasses on using limitation to drive creativity, amazing how complicated many tunes are in spite of being primarily 3 monophonic tracks!
@@thesosomusician Apart from video game music I enjoy anime music as well and nearly all music from Death Note is my fav.
Nice! I never got too deep into anime but there's alot of overlap in anime music, jpop, and some vgmusic (particularly certain rpg), definitely cool stuff w very interesting chord progressions
@@thesosomusician Sunsoft, Konami and natsume are my fav composers from 8bit era
Sunsoft and Konami particularly punched above their weight consistently putting out classic soundtrack after classic soundtrack.
Super
Cheers!!
Hell yeah, man. I've been checking RUclips (on and off) for probably about 15 years now, looking to see if anyone had done an instrumental cover of this gem. Clearly, it's been a while since I've checked. So unbelievably happy to have found this. My quest is finally at an end. Thank you so much for this, haha. I used to headbang to this as a kid every time I played Willow - it really is pretty out of control for an NES game.
Ha, yes! For an NES game, this tune is extremely epic and heavy, and it all comes through despite the sonic limitations on the NES! This is one I wish I'd done more recently after mixing songs for a couple of years because the recording is particularly raw. I can't believe it's been 4.5 years since I tracked it, but definitely mindblowing when people discover deep tracks on this channel and dig the process. Such a cool tune from a game that probably was a little under the radar back in the day!
I never thought Kabuki Quantum Fighter's music went hard until now
I discovered it right before putting this one together, I'd heard of the game when it came out but never played it. The soundtrack has like this vaguely Japanese meets vaguely Ninja Gaiden meets Iron Maiden vibe, some cool tunes on there!
@thesosomusician I've known about the game for a while because... Well... Username might be a clue
It's definitely cool that there's so many resources still covering some of these obscure off the beaten path games. That let 80s/very early 90s time period must be a gold mine for your channel as the combination of low memory/minimal artwork and lack of localization was a perfect storm for weird games!
sounds nice man. always forget how the bit around 1 min or so gives me James Bond vibes.
Cheers! Yeah, that section rings out an Emin with an F# added on top, so it's like an Emin9 which is the James Bond chord minus the maj7th, and then it has the chromatic descending line at the end of each measure as if it wasn't already far enough in spy territory!
@@thesosomusician awesome, thanks for the insight. Mostly Greek to me but still cool.
Np! Playing in original bands for so long and wanting to refer to things specifically for songwriting got me into theory a bit. The Emin9 from this song, from low to high is XX2002, the 2 on the high E string is the F# that really gives the James Bond sound. The actual James Bond Chord from low to high is 0 10 9 8 7 x, the 7 on the high B is the F#, with the 8 on the G being the D# (maj7 of the chord), adding some extra mustard on the chord. The other three notes on both chord are E G B, which is just your vanilla Emin. It's pretty crazy that a song or motif from a movie can be so popular as to be able to make a particular chord be associated with said movie for half a century!
@@thesosomusician cool indeed. Cheers for the info.
I'm always down to nerd out about music!
Play on tempo
The studio track was used as the template to record, it's on that tempo. The studio track is not recorded to a click.
Great cover! Also, the neding had me dying, ROFL.
Thanks! This tune was funny, the main riff in the OST sounds like a guitar, but it's surprisingly tricky to actually play on one! Also, I never pass up an opportunity for stock footage of the guy getting hit with the cannon ball!
And it was well complemented by the sound byte, lol!
This song made my jaw drop as a kid. I was already impressed with the NES, then hearing symphonic music like this on the SNES actually made me put the controller down and absorb it all
I'd been a big fan of the 1st three Castlevania soundtracks (particularly 3), so it was mind-blowing to finally play through SCIV on the SNES. The tunes still have the wild arrangements the NES games, but the compositions were longer and more sophisticated, such a major step up!
god damn, fucking sick!!
Cheers! I really had fun putting this one together, such a great tune and crazy fun to play!
not a great rendition....you've had better
This one's from nearly three years ago, the mix is definitely alot rougher than my mixes are now, but this is also a tune that was definitely the bleeding edge of what I was able to play when I tracked it. You don't get better at playing music by not trying though!
Try quantizing stuff mate...
I'm lucky this one came out half mixed ok, this is from the 1st year or so that I was mixing.
@@thesosomusician Try putting everything (drums mainly, but bass as well) to a grid. Every DAW has its own way but yours shouldnt be hard to figure out
I'm using reaper, it's pretty trivial to quantize drums in it, although when I tracked this video I didn't know that. I tend to still not quantize but it's more of an artistic choice than a gap in engineering knowledge.
Literally my favorite track
Nice! Great tune for sure, a fantastic merging of moodiness, melodic atmosphere, and Baroque organs!
Sick!
Thanks! I gotta get those bass thumps a bit tighter, real hard for me to play that many in a row!
Nice
Cheers!!!
(that piece of fuckin tape, rofl'd a little)
Are you referencing the mute on the guitar? That's a strip of velcro, it helps dampen the strings. This guitar is extremely resonant where hammering on any string causes all the other strings to resonate pretty loudly even with left and right hand muting, so the extra dampening really keeps the noise down.
forever dreams that n e v e r w a k e m e u p ,. .,
YESSSSSSSSSSSS
Cheers!!
I listened to the original and I like your version better! You take music that's already good and add your own touch to take the song to another level.
Thanks! The production on some of these late 90s records is classic, but it's mind blowing to me what you can accomplish on a shoe string budget in your basement! The production on the newest katatonia record is brilliant, I highly recommend them!
Very cool cover man. Always liked the music for this board
Thanks! The whole soundtrack is a banger, and this tune is a big highlight!
I named my AI assistant Syd.
That's tremendous, as long as it doesn't recommend microwaving hamsters!
Fucking awesome, you nailed the energy and spirit of the original!
Thanks! It was definitely a blast sitting in the pocket on the drums and bass for this one, but on the keyboard I was hanging on for dear life! Great tune!
dude wtf i love this. mooooooooooooore!!!
Always some room for some Swedish metal! There's a few tunes I'm planning to get too, just gotta rotate some vgmusic too since the non-vgmusic doesn't seem to do as well
Nice job! Excellent guitar tones.
Thanks! This one came together pretty quickly despite the length, not too bad to mix!
badass
Cheers!!
Love this track I got this on launch for my birthday as a kid and the soundtrack is on r of my favs great stuff
Cheers! I'm pretty sure I was still playing the original NES when SCIV came out, definitely was a real mindblow when I finally got my hands on an SNES, and then even later when I started going back and playing the classics that were out early in the SNES life cycle. SCIV is still a masterpiece imho!
I also dig the guitar, and the sound overall sounds cool imho. I like the riffs around 2:04 especially. I never got that into Katatonia, but they have an interesting sound for sure. I remember liking 'my twin' way back when. edit: I'm a huge fan of Opeth (their softer stuff is just amazing imho); that's a pretty cool factoid about the vocals.
Katatonia is an interesting band, they really evolved over their career. The record this track is from, Brave Murder Day, almost sounds like an ambient version of Morningrise by Opeth. Check out the song Atrium from their newest record, I'm not even quite sure how to describe it, it has things in common with mellower Opeth and Porcupine Tree, but it's kind of it's own thing. Really cool band!
@@thesosomusician will do, thanks for the recommendation :) edit: also for some reason the singer's voice made me think of another band 'Soen', who are kind of like a mix between Opeth and Tool, sort of. I think they even had (have?) a drummer that used to be in Opeth, but I could be wrong on that. If you haven't heard of them (I don't think they were very famous), their songs 'Lotus', 'Last light' and 'Lucidity' are pretty cool (imho).
Yes, Soen is pretty cool, especially that first record! Martin Lopez from Opeth is, I think, the founder of that project. Right before the pandemic I believe they put out a record that the 1st single was a bit nu-metally sounding, wasn't quite my cup of tea, but early on quite cool!
love your take on it! most underrated OST on NES imo
Cheers! Wayback on the vgmusic archive, there used to be a midi that had the idea of combining these three tunes, that was definitely the influence on this one! Great OST for sure, I think in general the game has a bad rap for not being created by Kojima, but overall it's pretty top notch.
That was incredible! I really like that FM guitar. Thanks for another awesome cover!
Cheers! That guitar is fantastic, it looks great, it sounds great, and best of all, it plays great! I've been super happy with it so far!
WoOoOoOoW :) This is really excellent :)
Such a fun tune to put together and jam out, cheers!!
LETS GOOOOOOO
Yes!!!!! Cheers!
this is so good, great to see other area themes from this game getting some love! fantastic work
Thanks! I'm a big fan of all those Sunsoft soundtracks on the NES. Every tune on Blaster Master is a classic, although the Stage 8 tune is a bit more of a sound effect fiesta than a song but classic nonetheless! This tune always reminded me of the Stage 3 tune from Batman

Room of Angel is great, but I'd definitely struggle with putting something together to do it justice (vocal driven music is definitely not my forte!). Promise, on the other hand, is right in my wheelhouse, just would have to do some research on the arrangement.
