Thank you for watching! :)
The fact that Jordan Peele and his production team took this film away from Netflix just to put it on the big screen is so good.
I wanted to see this and then I found out Jordan Peele is a zionist.
Jordan Peele, I need you to do the same for Hit Man rn please
You just taking the top comment from Jeremy Jahns vids huh
Jordan Peele always proves how dope he is.
Yup! And it’s worth every penny!
Starring Dev Patel

Story and Screenplay By Dev Patel
Directed By Dev Patel
So instead of waiting for Hollywood to cast him, he went straight to boss mode and decided to make his own action movie. What an amazing talent Patel has, I hope Monkey Man pushed his recognition even more.
it's about that time
579 time i see this copy pasta
Available exclusively on Patel+.
I remember thinking, who said he can’t be James Bond
I mean, let’s not exaggerate. Dude has been consistently in critically acclaimed work since he was a teen.
I loved the controlled chaos and claustrophobia in this movie. Both my wife and I didnt even notice the shaky cam. Being Indian, and having travelled all over the country, it definitely captured the vibe and suffocation of a crowded street in mumbai (real mumbai, not some gated community). There are lush, green and less polluted parts of India as well, but this movie did an amazing job capturing the insanity, filth and corruption of the city
Lovely seeing you here!
You are there on every monkey man comment section. I smell a video coming.
@@VamshiOhgs haha hey! Great to see you
I also enjoyed how the shaky camera stopped after he was given a purpose and something to fight for, after that purpose was found he also gained a lot of control
3:51 "Objects I didn't even know could be weapons are weaponized in this thing"
As he's showing a puppy on screen 😭
Everything everywhere all at once already turned a dog into a weapon
Don't worry, the doggo doesn't get used as a weapon in the film.
The puppy carried his gun
Doggo carried his glock on his first killing spree
I disagree with the intro being “messy” i picked up right away that this pacing was intentional. You’re inside his head. As someone with ptsd, it clicked for me instantly. I could go into heavy detail of other choices made and likely why. As an artist avidly picking films apart layer by layer. It was actually my favourite choice he made in the film. Especially in a world filled to the brim with giant heaps of hot garbage called “action films” like any marvel film that are generally nothing but a bunch of fast paced tossed together bits of “rage” and “badass” with no climax. Monkey Man is going to be legendary.
absolutely agree
TOTALLY agree. When I watched it a second time, the pacing of the beginning - the whole film, really - works even better and makes even more sense. Every little choice is so obviously intentional and working on multiple levels. It's an incredible work of art and I hope it gets it's due legendary status amongst action films.
Spent over two years working with Dev creating vfx for this film. It was quite a journey! So pleased it ended up where it did. It deserves all the attention it can get. It's a beautiful film.
I find the pace and structure works really well not being the typical formula for an action movie. Its got more depth than most.
The scene where he’s running across the roof tops, which has some of the iPhone footage in assuming, is there a shot with a digital double? Just for a split second?
Say wat u worked on the film?! ❤❤❤
Great job! Will be seeing this film
I saw your another comment like this under another video last night ❤ I'm so grateful for your team and for your hard work so we could enjoy this master piece. Keep going man 👊🏻✨
@@-pm6332 thank you!
One thing about the shaky cam that no reviewer seems to catch on but everyone in the comments of a review seems to understand is that, it decreases as we get towards the end of the film By the Time Dev becomes a more proficient fighter. The immense shaky cam and editing at the beginning is supposed to represent an unrefined fighter. I assumed that was the thought process behind using such extreme shaky cam despite John wick and the raid being direct inspirations.
Notice that the Shaky cam reduces as movie progresses, it portrayes Dev's character's control and focus improving as his character developes, by the end, there is no shaky cam showing that he has achieved "the state"
bro I think I need a friend group I told them let's go watch this tomorrow and they started hating "why would I wanna watch this when I can watch John wick"??? wtaf 😭 without even knowing the lore nor how dev cooks regardless stood on what I said and going w them tomorrow I can bet money they finna regret what they said when we walk out
*update *
we just saw the movie they loved it 🤣🙏 it was amazing fr wow
Dude you need better friends lol.
But I'm glad they finally agreed to tag along.
And let me tell you, as someone who's already watched this film, your friends are gonna regret everything they said. This movie destroys every single John Wick movie.
I just skipped that part and I am going to watch it all by myself 😅
@@vitoriaarruda2968 *W*
Not a huge action guy and I was snoozing during every John wick I’ve sat through. This one was fucking fire though
I love John Wick, but that franchise felt a lot more "organized" in its setpieces. Monkey Man's choreography and cinematography makes it feel far more violent and frenzied
John is an assassin. He goes for clean kills whenever he can. Bobby is referred to as a beast by Alpha and we see that in action. Anything he can get his hands on, he will use as a weapon. The shaky cam, something I usually don't vibe with, is done incredibly well because it really encapsulates Bobby's chaotic approach to fighting. The sophisticated stuff just isn't him - it's why he doesn't even bother with a gun on his second attempt and instead uses homemade firecrackers.
I've watched 4 reviews afyer seeing this last night and youre the first person to talk about the blatantly political messages of the film. Thank you.
Idk if its just me being a dark skinned woman fron a 3rd world countey, but i felt simultaneously sobered and empowered from the blatant themes on display in the film. It's funny cuz its like the ultimate ally movie. Gets a bunch of his trans found famiky and makes unwitting allies of the abused women, AND THEN beats the cruel sadistic pig who killed his mom with a glittery high heeled shoe.
Amazing.
also him using the padukas, a religious symbol to defeat the person using religion for manipulation of the public? freakin masterclass
YYESSS I thought i was the only one who noticed the glitter high heel. so subtle yet so powerful
And yet you're definitely gonna see the anti woke mfs calling this apolitical because they watched it for the cool action and nothing else
saw Monkey Man this evening, this is a truly great film. ostensibly an action/martial arts film, the themes of populism, living on the fringe, and those marginalized groups really hit it home for me. looks amazing, surprisingly thoughtful, and has bad ass action. I fucking loved it.
when that Mick Gordon sounding ass music started blaring as Alpha and the warriors showed up to assist Kid? Me and my friend were going absolutely BALLISTIC

I had the absolute privilege of going to the premiere in Hollywood. Dev Patel is such a Class Act.
This had FIVE PERCENT of the budget of Argyle, absolute Monke madness
this is insane, bro
Diabolical
That is dia-bolocal , 200m $ budget and ended up making 80 mil ,....if i was one of the guy who funded that shit i would have comitted cuside
Had no idea the budget was only 10 mil
Well in indonesia you can shoot movies that look like 100 million for the price a volkswagen.
I went into this thinking it would be great but Dev took it to SUCH a new level. I do love how unapologetic he was, tackling both Hindu nationalism and transphobia. And the arc of the main character was really heartfelt

@3:18 - I know part of the iPhone footages was when he was in the "little car." I believe if I recall the phone was taped to the rear view mirror. Also, I am so surprise that this movie only brought in $10 million this weekend. I saw it and absolutely loved it.
Just saw it. Good film, not without its flaws but for the budget and the conditions under which they filmed and when they filmed (during lockdown) it's a terrific film. Go watch it in the cinema and go ape sh*t.
One of the most badass action revenge flicks I've ever seen. This movie was insane.
I agree with you! I also did a video on my channel about how Dev Patel was inspired by "Koyla" as he is a huge Shah Rukh Khan fan.
I dont know if it would happen but I really hope Dev Patel gets some form of awards recognition for his performance since he brought something more interesting than just a generic revenge movie to the screen. I dont know if his performance was necessarily layered or complex, but it definitely carried the movie along with the action
This video has made me beyond excited to see what dev Patel has in store for us
it was inspired by asian martial arts films. i had a feeling it would stand out
I'm so thrilled to see what Dev Patel will direct next. He seems so passionate.
Kind of cool that Monkey's Paw ended up being the ones to release it given the, admittedly surface level, comparisons you could make to Get Out. Definitely excited to see it.
Im in love with Dev Patel
Something that I noticed on a second watch was the belief that the lines on your hands were our roots and can tell our future. His future was stolen from him and is represented by his scarred hands
Saw this last night and it much better and far more interesting than I was expecting. I am looking forward to more of Dev Patel's work as a director, and hopefully he only gets better at it.
Baz Luhrman without the headache!
...godamn..
That made me laugh for a good minute😂
I've heard there's shaky cam in the first half, but personally from what I've heard it's either to show Patel's inexperience or because of the insane behind the scenes problems (at some points they had to resort to iphone cameras because their main ones broke)
Edit: watched the movie. There's literally one scene with shaky cam and it isn't a fight. Theres also a disorienting car chase. Other than that you can see pretty much everything that goes on without problem
I think it’s a mix of both but for the most part it actually helped the movie except imo the car chase scene was a little too shaky, but other than that it was really creative, like for example, when he drop kicks down some stairs it goes into first person for a couple of seconds and it’s really cool, and ye the later fights get less shaky but it still has a some style to it like the early fights, just more controlled, also just amazing movie not too action packed either, only really 2 proper big action set pieces and then in between is some great storytelling
The only time I personally was able to notice a shift in camera quality was when he was running on the rooftops. I thought it all still contributed to the overwhelming, panicked feeling the movie wanted. Do you know when they used the iPhone? They have suprisijgly good cameras but I’m impressed it was integrated so seemlesly
I have no idea and I haven't watched the movie
@@aidyn5916 I know that one of the shots where they used it was inside of the motor-rickshaw/tuk-tuk, the shots where Dev is inside of it and the camera has the dangling thing from the mirror in view he said used an iPhone. I think it's in the BBC one on one interview with Dev.
Still this movie is underestimated. Only 7.0 on IMDB ? Here are other movies that didn't deserve a high rating and got more than they should have. Great actor and great talent. Acting at it's best...
I was already excited to watch Monkey Man but your description of it makes me some how even more excited to the point I’m just hoping my expectations aren’t too high.
Story, Production, and the Cast and Crew were all absolutely amazing!!!!!!!
I think the camera represented his personality at the time as he didn’t know what he wanted and was disorientated in his head and made us feel that way because if you noticed. Once he finds himself after being shot the camera gets a lot more stand still
Such a criminally underrated movie, but it all ties in with the theme of the movie so I find it really poetic,
This movie, just like its protagonist, is an underdog, but we love a good underdog story
We appreciate your insights. Keep up the good work.
PHENOMENAL!!! Dev Patel is VISCERAL!! I’m love everything he does. He’s definitely the one to look out for 👀

This not being released in India is a disgrace I am dying to watch this. The current state of India is deplorable and this is the entertaining yet politically provoking media India needs. remember when he bleached his monkey mask and put on his cool suit with the monkey mask to go kill the bad guys, but then he took off the monkey mask almost immediately, before even going in the door?
The mask restricted his field of vision. It's fine in one on one fights, where you know where your opponent is all the time. He knew he was about to scrap with dozens of guards and security, maybe all at once. You need full awareness of your surroundings in a situation like that, and the mask wasn't going to help.

I watched Chappie then this one back to back tonight. Both were great. I’d seen Chappie before, but it’s been a while.
I’ve always loved Dev Patel but his commitment to making this movie directing, producing, acting and writing earned a new level of respect from me. I can only imagine how hard it is to juggle all those things in such an intense chaotic action movie where you’re doing all the action.
If you understand the culture, the film's experience is even more amazing.
Hanuman reached for the Mango and instead grabbed the Sun and was punished by the Gods.
The Kid reaches for his Mother but she was on Fire and is punished by his Internal Rage and Pent-Up Anger.
Roots are a prevalent symbol that go deep in the Earth, shown as worshipped by the Hijra in the temple, who as a population are probably the farthest dated community of Third Gender on Earth.
But Hijra are persecuted, as are the roots of the country, as is the symbol of the Monkey in the way the Ring announcer demeans it as such asking The Kid to make the Monkey lose in fights.
The Mother is also featured amidst the roots of the trees laughing, like Mata, meaning Mother of India. She's burned by India's growing modernization and malice, the modern incarnation of Ravana (the demon king) in the character of Rana (sounds similar too).
You also see, when the Kid falls in the water after getting shot that the water is dirty (a sign of India's deep seated pollution of their holy waters like the Ganges), but the water from the forest is pure and clean.
The Devotion and Destruction dichotomy is represented in both Shiva and the Hijra and is the key to helping the Kid face the pain of his past, by effectively going into a hallucinatory memory that he's repressed because it was too painful.
It's all connected. The film is basically saying the Gods sit in the deepest roots of Indian Culture, beyond Modernization, Politics, Police, Corruption, Colonialism and that by venturing, painfully into those roots. It comes full circle when The Kid dips the Monkey Mask (originally black like a normal monkey or even similar to those like King Kong - racist depictions of colored people) into Bleach (a cross symbol representing a modern chemical that harms the poor and the fire of returning into roots to overcome the sin of modernization) and the Mask becomes White like the traditional depiction of Hanuman-Ji who helped in conquering Ravana.
There is so much more to unpack even further if you specifically acquaint yourself with the Ramayana, the story of Rama, Sita, Ravana, and Hanuman. It's really cool .
SPOILER WARNING - 2:21 - Would have liked to have seen the movie before knowing that so putting this here to help the rest of yall
It’s really not a spoiler once you see the film, trust me
The footage being shown at that moment in the video is more of a spoiler than the scene being described, fyi.
I was hyped for this movie and despite some parts disappointing me like that dialogue you mentioned it keeps growing on me as I think about it and I’ll definitely rewatch it in a few years to give it a shot removed from the trailer and the hype
Rewatching the film actually does make it a better experience...
The movie is actually sooo good i may say its probably one of the best action movies i have ever seen
the symbolism behind
his powers(his mother) taken away from him gave him the drive to get powers
hijras being devotion turning gradually into distruction just like the god they worship
monkey man being the hanuman who saved sita being kept inside the ashok vatika by destroying the lanka
hijras also representing the vanar sena who came to help at the last moment and fought alongside him
if monkey man is the hanuman in the story then rana is the ravana,if he is becoming the raged rama then shakti is the ravana in the story
...
idk i am not a very critical viewer or critic so dont at me for this
this was my takeaway
apart from it being an spectacular wild and crazy ride with such a simple story and as an indian living in india who has been watching alot of webseries and movies of recent times here, i dont see why it was banned..but because of that i got to see the uncensored version through torrent but i'd watch it again if it is released on big screens
The style is so fresh and creative in an familiar way that makes it accessible. I love when passion is palpable on the screen. Something I found interesting is my friend missed the first 25 minutes. While he lost some set up w queenie, there wasn't much missed that he couldn't infer later besides maybe setting the tone of themes w the folklore. They thought they had missed a lot more political set up
Your one liner review of this movie on Letterboxd craked me up. 🤣
Dev Patel Slum trilogy complete: Slumdog Millionaire, Lion, and now Monkey Man. 🥴🥴
Just watched last night, this was awesome.
Dev Patel is a rockstar, he should be in the running for the next James Bond.
Gave the film a watch and yeah I thought it was great in a lot of aspects. The action, story, performances, set design, music, messaging, etc; they were handled with so much care and attention. My only few gripes were the pacing and the shakey cam, of course. As the film went on, the camera got easier to follow, but early on it was a distraction. Also the pacing kinda felt sluggish. That's honestly it everything else about the film I absolutely adored and it's awesome it got a theatrical release.
Man this movie was a suspense drama action thriller with empowering subtitle revenge there’s really nothing he cannot do as a director. But if he would’ve waited an release it the same time as wucong epic
He looked like hit monkey for a second towards the end of the movie
This movie is actually incredible. I have rarely been so moved by an action movie.
The political critique of Hindu nationalism is one thing. Patel could have centred the story around a Sikh, Muslim character and made an excellent critique of hindutva, but the fact that he located his critique within Hinduism was so much more impactful. He contrasts the narrow patriarchal, corrupt and exclusive political vision of Hindutva with the pluralistic and multifaceted nature of Hinduism as it actually exists. The mythological allusions he makes to Hanuman, the Ramayana, and Shiva/Shakti really drive this home even harder. And the inclusion of the Hjira community felt tasteful and added so much to that theme.
I really hope this movie becomes a classic in South Asia and I hope it emboldens directors in the west to make equally compelling modern anti-fascist films about the west.
the way the shaky camera was less shaky and the takes were more one shot after he spent some time at the temple to show that he's more confident and ready to mu*rder AUGH it's SO chef kiss! Dev Patel the icon that you ARE 😩🙏

Super must watch - I predict MONKEY MAN 2 - it’s the next iconic series for generations to come!!! Just like those I mentioned
Hats off to those that enjoyed this but I really couldn’t get behind it. A movie that doesn’t know what it wants to be and goes completely bonkers/silly in its final act.
Preferred the first thirty minutes or so when it was just him working his way up the food chain.
I always entertain suspension of disbelief but some of the chravter decisions/plot holes were just too great to handle.
Love Dev tho.
2.5/5
I agree with you, I know action movies are supposed to take liberties with logic and reality but it was a little too much, and it was bit too all over the place.
What was bonkers about it, everything seemed pretty realistic even the drug scene, stuff like that really does exist
The Monkey Man is an excellent movie! Dev Petal and Jordan Peele make a dynamic duo. ❤❤❤❤
One of the best movies made in the last 14 years. I agree with everything you say, but the pacing. I loved the way the first half was paced.
I didn't really understand the correlation between the story of young Hanuman being punished for devouring the sun thinking it was mango and Dev Patel character quest to avenge his Mother
I loved monkey man. The best action movie i have seen in a long long time. Dev Patel you beauty
Just got home from the theatre, and I absolutely loved this movie. The one complaint I have is just how many of these characters speak fluent English. Like for Queenie it makes sense, but with a lot of the side characters it really took me out of the movie to hear them speak in English, because in real life they wouldn’t.
This looks like John Wick mixed with Crank, I’m excited for this
Definitely not, a little bit of John wick but definitely not crank, but don’t be too hype because this is not an action packed movie, it actually has a lot of story focus and I really enjoyed it, I think it’s up there with the raid and John wick movies it was incredible

New Tagline: "It's Baz Luhrmann without the headache"
I don't know if you've seen the Raid: Redemption but that one is one of my all time favorite action movies
And don't forget the sequel.
Both the Raid movies, the Ip man movies, Oldboy and now Monkey Man are among the best action movies ever.
Hell yeah. It's my favorite Action movie for the last 20 years.
Monkey Man was shot in Indonesia, with the stunt crew from the Raid 2. So you know where the crazy action comes from.
I saw the movie today and I liked the shaky cam though my friend did not. I liked the action where every punch felt like it hurt. I loved the depiction of Hanuman... to put this into perspective while Hanuman is a myth, he is also very much idol/god that is worshipped in real life. If you know the story of Hanuman it feels like an extra layer of story is being told. My friend kept pointing out references from the myth to that appeared in the movie. Which further clarified the reason to why these idols/gods/myths are believed and worshipped in the first place. People often preach but never emulate what they preach. Devs character emulated what is preached.
Another thing I adored was the hijra community, which is considered the third gender, consisting of the transgender or intersex population. But better known as an inbetween, the balance between the genders/gods consisting of both and neither at the same time. They have a place in Hinduism so it could be funny to see someone scream 'theyre making everything woke' in the up and coming weeks.
Keep Eeb Allay Oo in your list for the monkey themed watched. Indian political themes again but much more nuanced and a superb drama
It's on his Plan to Watch list on letterboxd
well while i agree with ur takes on the camera angles and the shakiness which kinda felt like a direct representation of how the main character was seeing. Hell! did u notice the pov stair case scene!! It didn't really feel out of place and that's like really hard to pull off when the whole action was in a 3rd perspective. Although the pov scene where Alpha blows "root dust" over camera seemed out of place.
But the music in the fight scenes felt really out of place. Really expected the camera and music to line up yk as eyes and ears of the protagonist.... which it didnt really in the fight scenes... especially while i was rewatching the movie i noticed the classical tones... playing in the 1st VIP lounge and i was like WTF! this doesn't match...
I am just and enthusiast but eager to correct myself if i made any mistakes in pointing that out.
Also, Sorry for the shitty censor board we have in India... they cut the movie short to protect someone who was directly pointed to "allegedly"... something is really wrong with people accepting movies for what they are... That delayed its release in India to the point that i had to pirate it to watch it...

I hate shaky cam with a burning passion of thousand suns but in monkey man it somehow felt... in place? immersive? right?
Already planning on watching it, now I'm just more excited
Minor Spoiler.....
If there is one minor criticism, I think that Dev's character should have bleached the monkey man mask before going back into the arena and fighting all those people with a white monkey mask. It would have made it thematically clear that The Kid and Hanuman's story were one and the same.
The shaky did make me nauseous by the end, admittedly.
*SPOILERS* I think the odd pacing at the start of the movie can be expressed in how pent up anger actually functions. It feels weirdly paced but the cinematic build up to the point of which he decides to finally confront the police chief in the restroom not only feels like the answer to all of the confusion in the pacing of the movie but unbelievably satisfying.
I totally agree with your opinions on the shaky cam, because some movies do it and it gives you a headache because there's no reason but it TOTALLY made sense in this movie, made it better to portray the chaos imo!
So hyped for this to get to my local theater
Good story & they got a lot out of a 10 million dollar budget, but the camera work was just TOO MUCH. People b*itched for years about the Paul Greengrass style shaky cam. This was Greengrass on steroids. The only reson I can assume that they took it to this crazy degree, was to hide footage that wasn't up to par. Sad too, as the color grading was amazing for the budget, reminded me of Only God Forgives. I would have liked more story & less action, as the action was, well, just too much also, but the story was good enough to expand on. Finally, and this is purely a personal thing, I can't stand Sharlto Cople. Granted he wasn't supposed to be liked, but there's not a frame in his whole filmography that doesn't make me cringe.
I saw this in cinema last night and it was absolutely amazing. I was told it was like John wick, but it was actually so much more!!! The setting was so fascinating and created such a unique story, the characters were compelling even though it's an action movie. The tension was so high, I spent the last half of the film inwthe edge of my seat. Aaaand the action is so gripping and fun and creative and grousome it's honesty such a good time. For all the murder I was grinning ear to ear while walking out of this film. I really really hope it gets the recognition and money it deserves, it's so much more than a direct to Netflix film, and I'm so so happy it was given a theatre release that does it justice.
it was sooo much more than a revenge story, i agree
Let's go Monke Movie Era 🐵
Alright, is this the voice of the guy from the watcher
I feel like I'm crazy that I'm the only one who didn't like this movie. It was incredibly loud, I don't know if it's just the theater or what but for the last half hour I plugged my ears and it was much more bearable. The camera made me really uncomfortable after a bit, the entire film is so zoomed in that nearly everything is a close up or more, and as it went it felt like my eyes themselves were zoomed in. The actual plot had some good things in it, the first act felt almost heist-y but then later on it feels almost irrelevant, I wish the film just started when he got to that temple place. I went to see it with my brother knowing nothing about it, neither of us did, just who made it and figured it would be a good time from that and I left confused why people would love this
This might be the best action film of the decade, I am not joking.
Haven't seen it yet but I'm not sure if it'll top John Wick Chapter 4 for me
@@samcarroll6210 it definitely topped john wick 4 for me
@@samcarroll6210It 100% topped John Wick 4 and I still can't believe it, best action film of the decade.
@@samcarroll6210Oh it's easily the best action film of the decade and yeah, it topped John Wick.
I agree 100%
It's the best action film of the decade so far and it easily tops John Wick
