Install Raymarine Triducer

  • In this video, we go about the replacement of an old transducer with a new Raymarine triducer (speed, depth and temperature). Before the project, I tried to find a video that walks you through the whole process, but didn't really come across anything useful so I thought I'd record our project and share it with you. It is certainly nerve wracking to open holes in the bottom of your boat.
Our boat is a J33 called Wee Beastie III, (formerly Daybreak) sailed out of Toronto. Buddy Jim and I went halves together on it about 5 years ago and she is a beaut.
As for the video process, it is kind of funny that we went through all the trouble to record all the steps leading up to installing the unit and then forgot to get a shot from underneath after the installation was complete. We launched the boat with the triducer in place. However, for haulout, I decided to use the plug that came with the unit. I honestly had never heard anyone ever mention using their plug and I almost chose to simply give it a miss. Partly because I was a bit anxious about removing the triducer while the boat was still in the water. BUT, I went ahead anyway and was surprised at how little water came up, thanks to the inlet flapper. The plug was installed in seconds and I don't think we took on more than a cup of water.
Most importantly, as the last shot shows, when the boat was hauled, the bow sling ended up right over the unit, despite the fact that the sling positioning locations were marked well aft. Had the triducer been in place, the paddle wheel would have definitely been broken or crushed. So if you take anything away from this video, let that be a lesson -- use the plug at haulout!

Thanks for showing this. We were perplexed as to why the transducer didn’t fit flush but we didn’t push it all the way in. Now that everything is installed, I’m not getting speed, now I know why. We should be able to push it down while the boat is in the water. My BF may need to dive on it while I push it down.

sugestion is 3 small coins between the hull and the transducer. After 24 hours remove the coins and tighten further.

Good stuff; you might adjust your volume on the recorder next time. Volume payback is very low. Thanks

Great job guys!! I hope you got rid of those 30+ year old displays in your cockpit at the same time.
Are you the same guy that demonstrated removing old boat name paint with Easy-off oven cleaner?
    Nice name.
