As a sequel to "X" & "Pearl", it's not the best chapter. But as it's own entity, I genuinely enjoyed it in it's 80's coke-sweats coated glory.

I disagree. This was my favorite installment and showed the progression and sets up perfectly for Maxxine to become the new Pearl when she becomes a has-been

To be honest. It feels like A24 trying to start a cinematic universe. But doing it more organically than Dark Universe.

I love how thorough your reviews are. I had a feeling it looked over ambitious to the point where I anticipated it getting messy by the second act, but I'm still really excited to see this! And I can live with a B+ 80's homage if it's still a fun ride.

I Just came back from seeing Maxxxine and enjoyed it quite a bit. I actually watched "X" a few hours before seeing Maxxxine (haven't seen Pearl yet), so the story was fresh in my mind. I liked how Ti West combined the seriousness of the story with a little bit of dark satire thrown in, as a way to pay homage to the films he clearly took inspiration from.
Side note: I just realized that Ti directed the film "House of The Devil." I remember hearing about that film back in the day, but never had the chance to see it. Well, now that I've seen X and Maxxxine, I'm more curious now.
I also enjoyed how he edited the flashbacks to make them look like they were shot on either rough 1980s film stock or VHS. Much more creative than what we've been seeing in flashbacks in more recent films. I'd thought he tried to make the rest of the film look like it was shot in the 1980s, but it could've just been that he might've shot the film in 35mm.
What I also liked was how Ti West wrote in the references to other films (the Bates Motel tour, for example). He didn't make it too blatant as to what he was paying homage to, as in he didn't talk down to the audience Rick and Morty style and have the characters constantly explain what they were referencing.
Overall, it was a fun film and one of the better films I've seen this year (next to Lisa Frankenstein). I will definitely watch it again when I get the chance (along with the others).

Has the Snob reviewed Lulcio Fulci's "Murder Rock" from 1984? This reminded me of that, and i tried to find a review on Brad's channel, but couldn't.
The combination of dance, aerobics, and Stayin' Alive showbiz sleaze with New York Ripper gore and sex sleaze would be perfect for the Cinema Snob, plus it kinda sucks.

Even with the criticism, I’m still very interested in seeing this especially since I absolutely love X and Pearl
And just from the whole look, it’s very clear that Ti West is a fan of various eras and genres of movies and incorporates that into the story, which I love
As for having too many plots, maybe Ti West could write a couple stand-alone books to flesh them out a bit more but either way I’m definitely going to check it out

You’re much better at articulating the dissonance than I am. There were a few points where I thought, is this a dream sequence? There was just something off in some scenes. Also feels like it’s missing the “you can’t escape time/death/aging” themes of X and Pearl.

Best horror triology and maybe my fav triology outside of og sw. Each film is so different but mia goth ti west kill it everytime. X was my fav. Pearl had the best scene(ending monologue). Maxxine was the most entertaining. I do agree it feels less prescised but i felt likt it was capturing 80's film making where they try to jam as many ideas in a bit of sloppy fashion with happy Regan end. Satrucial and intelligent but your opinon will range on how intentional you think the film is. I guess the twist 1st time we met the sleezy detective. Ill have to rewatch and sit on maxxine to know of its B+ or A or A-. It feels cocained fueled at times which made it incredibly entertaining.

Hard to compare this to the other 2 in the trilogy since this is takes several steps further away from the genre of those. It comes down to how the directing choices worked for you, and for me they worked extremely well!

I want Ti West to take a shot at an early to mid '90s action flick, like a hard R love child or Renny Harlin and Bruckheimer. It was an underrated era for action films.

To me, X was kind of a mess, it didn’t know what it was trying to be. Another thing that bugged me was the technical aspect of it. X was shot on 35mm and 16mm(for the porn scenes), but there’s a chunk of it that’s clearly digital. When it makes that jump to digital from 16mm, it is jarring. Hell, the end credits are on 16mm.

    MaXXXine is almost perfect!
I do think like it’s the weakest out of the three films. Doesn’t quite hit the landing, it feels a little tame & bit mainstream. As well as Uneven, too much going on in a short period of time, a big reveal where you can see it coming & an underwhelming finale, but that being said…it was still a hell of a fun time. Highly entertaining throughout. A fitting conclusion to this trilogy.

Man, I love X and Pearl and everything else Ti West has done but MaXXXine let me down. Maybe my expectations were too high, but toward the end I felt like we were getting into Hot Fuzz territory. And that's a great movie, obviously, but its also a satire/comedy which I don't really want from my sequel to X. I'll give it a 6/10. My buddy gave it a 2. And imo there needs to be a rule that Ti West only shoots on film. It's like traveling back in time and forcing Brian DePalma to shoot Dressed to Kill or Blow Out on digital. It just wouldn't be as good. imo

Haven't seen Pearl, but I didn't like X - it just got too weird for my liking, and I was not impressed by Mia Goth's performance: the makeup was probably the best part of the movie. The only characters I cared about were the cameraman/director, who didn't want his girlfriend doing porn, and who didn't deserve to die, and the blonde actress, who was convincing in her portrayal of a hedonist. Had the movie simply focused on being a commentary on the porn industry, and stuck with one theme (dirty movies as art, as having aesthetic value), without bringing in the weird old people, it would've been better.
