I recently got "The Storm Gourmet: A Guide to Creating Extraordinary Meals Without Electricity " which I've found to be extraordinarily helpful for creating a pantry and meals without refrigeration or stoves. It's aimed at people living in coastal areas who experience severe weather and outages but is very practical when applied to vanlife as well.

Hi Dee 🙋 For those glass bottles - grab a pack of kids tube socks. Fit like a glove!
Baby socks work with the tiny jars. We also used them for stacking the sterno cans.
Also when in a store ask for the cardboard seperators that are in the boxes they throw out. Can cut them to size & double them if you want a extra layer of protection. We've even used them to seperate the propane bottles.

You would have been a great person to have along on a wagon-train trip back in the 1820's to 1870's, traveling from Missouri to the western shores or gold fields. These people had no refrigerators and got to go shopping just once, which was at the beginning of their six-month trip!

While I'm in the fridge/freezer camp, I can understand and respect the simplicity of avoiding the need to worry about breakdowns and manage the required power.
Some of my tricks with the fridge/freezer plus soft-sided cooler bag setup I use, can be used in some circumstances without a fridge or freezer. I put water and other drinks into the freezer, for later swapping into the cooler bag, creating a fridge. It also gives me partially-frozen water (or other uncarbonated drink) bottles to drink. That was a life saver in Quartzsite in July. You could so something similar with snow (or much better, denser ice) harvested outdoors, put in your cooler bag.
A pound of snow and a pound of ice have the same cooling energy, the snow just takes up more space. If you can't find ice, pack snowballs as tightly as you can, lol.
When you're somewhere that it goes below freezing overnight, or with lots of snow, you could lay out water bottles on the ground overnight on snow/ice, to get them at least partially frozen for use in your cooler bag. Likewise, harvesting ice/icicles from Nature, into Ziplocs could work. You could even pack snow around water bottles outdoors, both to cool the bottles and to melt the snow into a pan where it might freeze into ice.
Loves seeing your lists of basic food staples to keep on hand. Some good ideas I'll try, though even after adding some, my own list in each category will still be shorter than yours. Try throwing an oatmeal packet into your pancake mix, I recently started doing that, plus substituting Aldi Strawberry/Kiwi juice ($1.25 per half gallon here, about half the cost of most of their other flavors) for water when making pancakes. Yum, and a very different texture.

Awesome tips, Dee! I use a portable Alpicool C20 just for the warmest months and I am boondocking a lot. Otherwise my Igloo cooler works fine and it holds 90% of my foods. It is also a great protection from insects, possible rodent invasion ( none in two years so far) and dust/dirt from old logging roads. My canned goods and sealable food packages go in slide out bins under my bed. Even resealable packages get placed in double ziploc bags for protection. I love your organizational skills. I have shopped at Ikea and found great storage items.

Hello Dee. If you frequent 2nd hand shops or charities, I highly recomment you pick up a candle food warmer. Buy the candles with a high wall, so the flame sits under metal dish. I have boiled water and heated food in a metal dish on this. Plus you can put a bowl of water on this and a few drops of essential oil and your van will smell beautiful with health benefit of it as well. Use beeswax candles for use indoors......use parafin wax candles out doors with citronilla essential oils to keep bugs away. Very important to have as a back up incase you break or run out of fuel for burner camping stove.

If you are going to be parked at a spot where you can have a small campfire for a couple days you should make a teepee above the fire and you can use a rack from an oven and put it at the top of the teepee with a little bit of wire holding it.. and any mushrooms, vegetables or meats that you have that you aren't going to eat right away you can smoke them yourself over two days..after you smoke your veggies and whatnot you can save them in ziploc bags and they will last up to a year. When smoking your goods use punky dead for a while wood for the most smoke. You don't want to cook the items but you want them smoked so make sure your teepee is at least eye level away from the majority of the heat...I just sold my off-grid property here in Michigan to move to the Llano River in Texas hiking into the backcountry panning gold, hunting for boar, rattlesnakes, scorpions, fishing for fish and eel and trapping crayfish for the next year as an outdoor living enthusiast living the Native American Way..if you are ever in Texas, come hang out.

Remembering when I used to winter camp, my whole vehicle at night would become a refrigerator in the wintertime, literally. During the day, an ice chest 'without ice' would keep my semi-perishable foods cool for the most part. I always played it safe during the winter and would stay pretty close to civilization. Because of the cold weather in the single digits, I'd stay within a few miles of an auto parts store, just in case and also food store to buy perishable food items for immediate consumption. Take care, stay warm and travel on !!

@@LadyBugout So…The fruit jerky is easy and delicious. This recipe can be used with most fruit and berries.
I use a mini Bullet blender to purée my fruit and a low watt dehydrator.
      Apricot and Peach Fruit Leather
Wash, cut, and purée fruit. Heat puréed fruit over low heat for 10-15 min. til fruit is mushy. You can add sugar if you like it sweeter. Line drying trays with parchment paper being sure to have the paper come up on the sides to keep purée from running off. Pour out fruit evenly on to parchment paper, dry at 154°F for 3 hours or til “leathery.” Store in airtight bag or container. Keeps for weeks. 🍑
The dehydrator I use is small and pretty energy efficient. 240w x3hrs on an inverter while I’m driving-the power is generated and “free.”
Sent you a DM on IG with info.

I just added one of those bag sealers to my Amazon cart! Hehe I thought it was such a cool thing when you showed it in a different video but I forgot about it until this video. Anyway, I bought a 12v fridge a few weeks ago and I remember how excited I was to buy it. It's used but I only paid 80 after he marked it down from 120. It's nice and I'm happy but I'm glad I watched this. I'm not vegan, but I truly need to be for my health but I do know that there will be times I won't be able to charge my solar due to weather or whatnot so it's possible I could be without power so I plan to have things on hand like you mentioned but I did not realize you could get dried strawberries! So freaking cool! Lol I have fruit in my sticks and bricks fridge now that I'll never eat before it goes bad. I tell myself to stop buying so much but I somehow still do it. Crazy. However, I'm thinking I won't be as wasteful when I convert to van life. I know my water usage will go way down. I waste it when I brush my teeth for sure so that will stop. lol happy trails!9

Muchísimas gracias, I've enjoyed learning new shelf-stored products. I too can only eat certain things. I covered my cooler with reflectix which helps keep cold in as well.

I like to keep a good brand of peanut butter powder on hand--it makes a creamy milk that goes well on hot or cold cereals. Also, dried onions that I buy in bulk, Rye Crisp type crackers and always some dates!

I also use the packages of cooked rice, beans, etc. because of watching you. They were never on my radar before. Thank you for doing this video.

Here’s a tip not mentioned to store fresh foods for longer:
    Green bags!
For some reason there’s certain plastic green bags you can buy that keeps fresh veggies longer. I can tell you it works.
I’ve never researched why though… might do it now!

Yea. Fruit and veggies go bad quickly. I haven’t had much go bad on me yet but I’ve decided that when I buy fruit in particular that I will only get a single serving (unless it’s blueberries which have to be eaten quickly).
So, I’ll just buy one apple for example. I’m currently still in graduate school & live in a major city so I’ve decided that I don’t need to stock up on much. Better to keep as much space as clear as possible. There are grocery stores everywhere.
If I were to go off grid I would switch my strategy.

I need to start learning to live with the minimum. Y'all's take care. Yes, ur videos mean a lot to alot of us. Wether ur doing good or bad, I make time to read ur stories!
