It's not about 'making a statement' Idiots in tight groups doing hand stand wheelies down the highway have completely missed the point. Keep it simple, keep it real. Riding should release you & relax you to simply live.

Between my dad and I we own 11 bikes. A TTR125, Crf230f, Yz125, PE175, XR200, WR450, Ktm 1190, Yamaha Venture Royale, Kz650, GSXR1000, and last but not least a Yamaha PW50. You could say that we have a little bit of a bike obsession.

I say "It's an antique from before there was a difference between cruisers and sport bikes". If the bike is present they usually go "Oh, that's why it looks so retro." I just roll my eyes and I don't argue with them over the difference between retro and vintage...
Started on a custom built with a 70cc that my dad built when i was 8, then to a 110 scooter that i bought on my first job, then sold the scooter and got a 150cc street bike, after that i went to a Gilera SMX 400cc, then i broke a leg, and now i'm watching this video in company of 17 screws from my left leg. As soon as i can walk again, i'm getting a 600cc+ bike

Cafe bikes used to be (better?), faster, lighter and better handling than stockers. True sport bikes only existed in the rareified zone of high priced exotics we couldn't have (Ducati 900 S or Laverda Jota, say) We stripped off a lot of heavy parts, put on low bars and rearsets, replaced high seats with road race or TT units, put on aftermarket shocks and reworked the forks. Some of us ran road racing rain tires. We all wore black leather jackets so the oil stains wouldn't show. It took many hours of blood sweat and tears and the result was no where near as good as a modern sport bike. I was so happy to be able to buy a light, fast, fine handling bike off the showroom floor. Too bad I'm too old to ride one for more than 2 hours without being in so much pain I want to cry like a little girl.
The pieces we used to remove were often rather heavy, centerstands, steel grab handles, turn signal stalks, steel seat pans, etc. Motorcycles weren't engineered for light weight like today's sport bikes. Our goal was to improve performance. Most of the current cafe bikes are built for appearances and style. some of them are virtually unrideable. their purpose is to look custom, not go fast and handle well.

And one other thing you are very honest because when you crashed which by the way you were very lucky to survive and I hope your okay you admitted, you where going to fast and you say you go fast as well which some riders don't admit. Cafe bikes used to be (better?), faster, lighter and better handling than stockers. True sport bikes only existed in the rareified zone of high priced exotics we couldn't have (Ducati 900 S or Laverda Jota, say) We stripped off a lot of heavy parts, put on low bars and rearsets, replaced high seats with road race or TT units, put on aftermarket shocks and reworked the forks. Some of us ran road racing rain tires. We all wore black leather jackets so the oil stains wouldn't show. It took many hours of blood sweat and tears and the result was no where near as good as a modern sport bike. I was so happy to be able to buy a light, fast, fine handling bike off the showroom floor. Too bad I'm too old to ride one for more than 2 hours without being in so much pain I want to cry like a little girl.
phlodel The sad part is that, due to material & engineering improvements, a lot of modern "cafe" builds end up *heavier* than the stock bike was.
The pieces we used to remove were often rather heavy, centerstands, steel grab handles, turn signal stalks, steel seat pans, etc. Motorcycles weren't engineered for light weight like today's sport bikes. Our goal was to improve performance. Most of the current cafe bikes are built for appearances and style. some of them are virtually unrideable. their purpose is to look custom, not go fast and handle well.
