      I just finished reading a book about two New Jersey brothers aged 17 & 15 who flew an old Piper Cub coast-to-coast in 1966. Their father had purchased the old plane Used for $300 in 1964. The two boys spent the winter of 1965-‘66 rebuilding the entire aircraft, including recovering all the fabric, doping, paint, etc. The plane had no electrical system, so no lights, starter, or radio. It’s a great read and reminds me of what has been lost in GA over the decades with all this focus on Whizz Bang technology and the inherent complications built into the Airspace these days plus compliance with ever more stringent regulatory requirements.
      The book is “Flight of Passage” by Rinker Buck & is one helluva good read, especially if you miss the days when Aviation wasn’t such an exclusive community - primarily geared to people who have more dollars than sense, if you get my drift.

    Very cool airplane, and perhaps it’ll inspire some more affordable homebuilit options to come to market. Aside from the aircraft, I’d like to encourage better radio phraseology in your future videos. As an industry safety advocate, AOPA pilots need to adhere to AIM 4-2-4 standard phraseology and use aircraft call signs while making radio transmissions, not “blue supercub.” That is an unacceptably poor example to set for your followers. If any confusion on the issue remains, there happens to be an excellent article titled “New pilot’s guide to ATC communication” on your own webpage…..

    0:21 Please do not set the poor example of using only the color and type of your aircraft when announcing positions. Save it for Oshkosh. My ADSB does not show colors. The out of state pilots coming to Idaho copy that poor example. If they have to give colors, add some tail numbers.

    900lbs is quite heavy compared to LSAs that might be 550lbs. That's a little counter intuitive.
    I get the impression that stol planes like this can do the 'impossible turn' with ease. Any truth to that?

    • @Captndarty
      @Captndarty 3 месяца назад +1

      550lbs? You might live in a world where LSA are paper, thin composite, and blow around with the wind but they don’t have 950lbs of useful load. In the United States, everything is bigger and more robust than Europe. Rag and tube, even full metal construction is always going to be heavier. So yes, this airplane is lighter than their next model so it is intuitive. Planes like this and mine for example can do the impossible turn between 250 and 300 feet under “expected“ conditions.

    • @DanFrederiksen
      @DanFrederiksen 3 месяца назад +2

      @@Captndarty well USA also uses the ignorant imperial units and commits genocide so it's perhaps not the absolute standard you think it is.
      A cub looks like a fabric plane which should be about as flimsy as it gets. You can mentally compare to for instance a 15 foot carbon fiber canoe rated for 750lbs load and it weighs 32lbs. A couple of those for the fuselage, 1 or 2 for a wing, call it 120lbs total. The Rotax is a 1.2l 4 cylinder, not huge. It weighs less than 200lbs with all the bits. That's 320lbs or 145kg combined. Pretty long way up to 930lbs, wouldn't you say. Somehow they managed to hide a full cast iron piano and a person in there. Maybe they are doing a concert.
