    "The ego isn't wrong; it's just unconscious." - Eckhart Tolle

    • @JonathanJonesYoga
      @JonathanJonesYoga 3 года назад +10

      The word ‘unconscious’ implies dualism. This is meant as no offence to anyone, but ‘teachers’ will say what is right for the ‘students’ at that moment, and that may be why those words came through Tolle. Question: how can anything be unconscious? That actually implies non-existence- consciousness = existenstence therefore unconconsciousness = no existence. The ego for many (including myself) exists, but its existence is a self created illusion yes? So it exists and is therefore consciousness yes? In that case, we are the creator of ego (and all), so perhaps a truer statement may be ‘the ego doesn’t matter’. As is what is implied by Rupert here :)

    • @andreasrylander

      @@JonathanJonesYoga The way Tolle tends to use the word "unconscious" is that he alludes to the tendencies of egoic mind activity to identify with form and such. Essentially, when he speaks of "unconsciousness" he means being entangled in and identifying with the mind activities.

    I think he understates the allure of ego. The ego is power-seeking and insatiable. It's at the center of every human interaction. It's even scanning this video to see what power can be derived from it; i.e. any insights that might impress your friends and relatives.

    • @ernestweber5207
      @ernestweber5207 7 лет назад +5

      That is a good point. Your estimation could be said to be correct, but also note the dramatic charge that the terminology you used gives to this fictional entity. It is almost like a trailer to the movie of The Ego: Insatiable.
      Of course, the ego is essentially oneupmanship and thrives on duality itself. So, we could also note that the ego does some wonderful, creative, inspiring and marvelous things, as well.
      If the ego is as you describe it, does the understatement serve to diminish the ego by way of ed-emphasizing it? Or does give too much attention to it and focusing on its negative aspects feed it? In that sense, my points are rhetorical and giving it some though might be useful.

    • @garyd1638
      @garyd1638 6 лет назад +14

      It depends on how "strong" your ego is and how much you identify with it. Your ego was scanning the video to see what it could take from it to impress someone. My ego was doing no such thing. My ego affects me in different ways, like reminding me of my dysfunctional childhood. But in actuality the ego isn't real and the only "power" it has is how much YOU (awareness) give to it. If you are identified as a separate self, your ego may be very controlling of you and seemingly powerful with its desires and insatiable need. But if you realize the Real You, God itself (love, awareness, peacefulness, constant), then you see the ego for what it is: a bit annoying as an illusion but having absolutely no power over You.

    How can awareness "realize a part of it's infinite potential" if it's already infinite?

    • @ernestweber5207
      @ernestweber5207 7 лет назад +2

      Well, that is a duality, right? So, when there is duality there is a finite we can posit as "versus" the infinite. So, the duality is thought to be reality and that is the source of all polar opposites.
      Obviously, that view, (of the intellect analyzing and categorizing experience) reveals and sustains itself as splitting, dividing, cutting up. It is rather simple, but seems difficult or complex. The end of the reliance, belief and insisting by the assumed separation of self and other is found in the recognition of their unity and that is ineffable.
      In that case, it is always infinite, (a constant) and the illusion of the finite is a veil, in a sense. The distractions of the forms could be called an amnesia as a temporary forgetfulness. If you forget something, does that mean it was not known?
      This is a very useful subject to contemplate, so rather than take my brief illustration for anything, continue with the question for yourself.

    • @Nitephall
      @Nitephall 7 лет назад +3

      Ernest Weber I guess I just don't understand why infinite awareness would play this game with itself of "forgetting." Why this game of separate objects and separate selves? It seems as if awareness has gone to very great lengths to convince itself that it is not what it actually is.

      He explains it about 30 seconds later in the video.
      However, I can give an example. There was a movie "The Prince and the Pauper" where a very young Prince is really bored with his formal and ceremonial life, and happens to notice that he looks just like another kid who is poor. He secretly arranges for them to switch lives for awhile, and for the first time, gets to play in the dirt and do undignified and dangerous kid things.
      We can say that the Prince has thereby taken on a "limitation on his true nature" as royalty, but it is not a problem for him - just the opposite.
      So, when Awareness limits itself and becomes the ego, it is similar to that.

    I'd say ego is like a knot on a thread. A rather tangled one. :-) It makes it difficult for the thread to move through the fabric of reality - that is suffering, evil etc.
    But still it is made of the thread and nothing else. And reality is also woven from the same thread. You see? Everything is the same material - reality, "I", ego - but in different constellations and relationships.
    The process of healing and awaking is untangling the knot. It can be very difficult as it is with knots. Funny is that at the beginning there was just a thread and at the end there is again only a thread. Nothing is added and nothing is missing.

    • @serenity963
      @serenity963 3 года назад +2

      Rupert uses the analogy of Mary (Infinite consciousness, or Mary's infinite mind) and Jane (the finite mind or the apparent individual) to explain that all there is to Jane, is Mary's mind. All there is to Jane, is an apparent limitation or localization, a contraction of Mary's infinite mind. So when he says Mary has to fall asleep in Amsterdam to take the form of Jane in the streets of London, he means that the infinite, which knows only the infinite, has to and willingly forgets it's infinite nature in order to manifest the differentiated and multiplicity of experience. He often says that the infinite only knows the infinite, and the finite only knows the finite.
      Another way of explaining it would be, in order to see "something", there has to be a perspective. A perspective is a limitation, a possibility or a way of seeing. We can only perceive one thing at a time. We can only think of a situation, in one way at a time. This is the finite; possibility. So Jane is a possibility, a perspective. Mary is seeing itself, and seeing by itself, sees nothing but itself.
      If I would give my own analogy here, it would kind of be like the finite mind or "Jane" is like a TV-channel. Mary is the TV. The TV by itself has no content; whenever there is content, there is only ever one show or TV-channel on at a time. So undifferentiated being, or the infinite, and differentiated being or the finite; multiplicity.
      Sorry for my rough and bad explanation. I couldn't answer more clearly in this moment of writing.
      So essentially, infinite consciousness is infinite, and therefore there is no multiplicity or objective experience; all it knows is itself, infinite, limitless, colorless, formless being. And in order to start dreaming or manifesting itself and explore it's own infinite possibilities, the infinite has to "fracture" itself into infinite possibilities. Each fragment is a localization or perspective of consciousness. Consciousness has to forget its infinite nature in order to manifest itself as "this or that" experience, and it forgets itself in its own creation. He explains that we can trace our self back to our essential nature, which is infinite consciousness at any time.

    The ego isn't bad, it's an illusion, unreal. We call the ego the small self or the imaginary self. Ego is a name we assign to God unaware of himself. In other words, ego is the title given to the temporary state of unawareness. It's not bad or real, it's simply a temporary state of confusion. That's why, "it acts so bad." Because it is unaware of its true Self.
    To say that awareness, knowingly" limits itself is silly and contradicts Jesus, The Buddha, Krishna, Socrates and every great spiritual teacher. All advanced teachers agree that "sin" or what we call the "ego," is ignorance. In other words, being unaware.
    How does awareness become unaware? Through it's innate innocence and expiration of infinity. As it explores infinity it has the capacity to explore everything, even the impossible. In that exploration it explores the possibility that it is not itself. That is where the "self," is imagined. The challenge humanity then has is to return to Reality, the true "Self."

    • @pedrozaragoza2253
      @pedrozaragoza2253 7 лет назад

      Excellent point. Awareness or consciousness is aware, yet it is not aware of its whole Self. It's as if a person is aware of their role as a mother but not as a sister. As we advance in awareness we see a more wholesome and complete view of ourselves.
      That's what we refer to as self (ego) or Self. The ego (self) is how we see ourselves as limited or imperfect beings. However, our true nature and essence, all of us, have within us a Perfect and complete Self. Life and the spiritual path is about becoming aware of that Whole and complete Self.

    • @pedrozaragoza2253
      @pedrozaragoza2253 7 лет назад

      Connor Lepp great point. The ego becomes an integral part of conscious evolution, yet it is not necessary since it doesn't really exist or do anything. With his you bring up an essential and profound point, does life evolve from the bottom up or did life begin from the top and then involve? If you believe in biological evolution, then you believe that it began from nothing to something. I believe that life evolves from Divinity, as perfect and complete, and then through exploration we "fell." The fall however, as I know it was not a bad thing, but as a natural consequence of exploring infinite possibilities.
      Life began as perfect, Whole and complete, as Divine and pure, through exploration we contemplate separation and that's the fall. So the idea that we are separate, is actually the birth of the illusory ego.
      Does that make sense?
      Por evolution from here on is the awareness that the separate self is unreal, only a temporary illusion, and that when we realize the Self, our true essence.

    • @pedrozaragoza2253
      @pedrozaragoza2253 7 лет назад

      Connor Lepp to be accurate one needs to be aware of the fact that the ego is not real. There is zero reality or truth to the ego. The ego is an imaginary identity that we hold because we are unaware. It's like believing that we are a short because we temporarily wear one. So wanting to know your Self through the shirt will only confuse us. To get to know the Self go directly to the essence , the Self. Duality is very confusing because it portrays us as two separate beings and then we don't know what we are. We are pure light, but we see ourselves as darkness or imperfection. If you study the imperfection you get more confused because that's not what we are. If you delve into perfection, then you begin to become aware of your true Self.
      I pray that's helpful.
