Over 60 years old and it still is scary. Landmark film that set a new paradigm for scary movies much the same as the Exorcist some years later.
The reaction you both had when Arbogast was attacked at the top of the stairs was priceless 🤣😆

Best scare scene in movie history, all about building suspense.
I saw this in the theater when I was 17 years old. The stabbing at the top of the stairs was scarier because everyone screamed.
I think it's similar to the great hospital kill scene in The Exorcist 3 I think it is. That one is great too
His face with that creepy smile at the end is EVERYTHING!

Actress Vera Miles is the sole survivor of this movie at age 93.
This is one of the all-time classic film twists in cinema history. Blew peoples' minds.
The other secretary, -- the one who said "I guess he noticed my wedding ring" -- is actually Alfred Hitchcock's daughter in real life.

The guy who played Norman Bates, Anthony Perkins, did it so well, he was forever associated with that character, so type-cast, he was in very few films.
That's a shame but he was obviously brilliant in this film.
@@robincraft4682 Perkins was also gay and he didn't hide it as well as a number of other Hollywood heartthrobs did at the time, which was a big issue for homophobic Hollywood at the time. But I went ahead and looked up his bio after reading your remark and was surprised to find he played in a lot of films, but was a leading man mostly when he was some type of psychotic villain.
He was generally typecast as nervous and twitchy, which was easy to do, in movies like “The Trial”, “Fear Strikes Out” and “Murder in the Orient Express, even if he wasn’t playing he villain.
@@johnnehrich9601 His widow Berry Berenson, who he married in 1973, was on one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center. She knew he was gay, but they stayed married until he died in 1992.
Not at all, Perkins had quite a carreer before and after Psycho, before he was casted as a young hero and romantic lead even recording love songs, after Psycho he had big parts all over the world, right after Psycho he co-starred with Ingrid Bergman and shot the Kafka movie with Orson Welles, Romy Schneider and Jeanne Moreau, he did a wonderful crazy comedy in London with Brigitte Bardot and many other movies and he worked till old age still getting starring roles. Janet Leigh was a huge star, much bigger than her daughters; before and after Psycho she did filma noir, including Touch fo Evil, adventure movies and lots of musicals and that special Columbo episode, and Vera Miles had been a star in her own right long before Hitchcock, starring in big movies of John Ford and co-starring with James Stewart and John Wayne. But Psycho is such an outstanding movie, it makes everything else disappear. After Psycho Hitchcock told Janet Leigh, whom he adored . and they became life-long friends -, that they never can make another movie togehter, this would ruin that extraordinarey special aura around Psycho.
The pond needs to be expanded. There should be room for twelve cars. Twelve rooms, twelve cars.
It is so perfect to see you two didn't get spoiled about this movie, that makes your reactions exactly like the audiences of 1960. Not knowing what's going to happen next. And genuine surprise about the ending.
As I wasn't allowed near a horror movie as a kid, I got to experience the movie that way as well the first time I saw it.
"A Boy's Best Friend Is His Mother"
This movie is such an absolute classic. It was groundbreaking and does such a great job with the storytelling. And I'm so glad that you weren't spoiled about Norman and his mom. It's such an iconic reveal. In fact, so many scenes from this movie are iconic and have been spoofed so many times that they're part of pop culture. This movie is so good.

The Lady that worked in the office with Marion was Alfred Hitchcock's Daughter!
Vera Miles, who played Janet Leigh's sister Lila in Psycho, is STILL alive. She IS 93 yr's old.
Hitchcock at his best. No one expected Marion (Jamie Lee Curtis's mother) to die so early. Yet Anthony Perkins performance carries it the rest of the way.
I know I didn't expect the Janet Leigh to die so early. Or at all. I saw this film in 1962. Talk about getting freaked out.
You can thank the genius of Hitch's wife Alma Reville for that. He was concerned about killing Marion off in the middle of the film because of the audience reaction to the star going so soon. Alma told him to double down: "Don't wait until half way through, kill her after 30 minutes." In the 2012 biopic 'Hitchcock', Scarlet Johansson playing Janet Leigh appears on screen for the first time on EXACTLY 30 minutes. Also Alma was the only one to spot that Leigh swallowed during one of her 'dead' scenes. A single frame of film needed to be cut to maintain the illusion and she was the only one to see it. She was more than Hitchcock's wife, she was a cinema force to be reckoned with in her own right.
@@dabe1971 She was indeed, a true force to be reckoned.... except in the beauty department. Her crone-like, haggish visage was instrumental in Hitch's obsession with some of his leading ladies.
Hitchcock wife suggested Marion to be killed off early.
Vera Miles gets no respect at all. I think she does a great job and has the perfect moment at the end when she accidentally hits the overhead light.
A woman sent a letter to Hitchcock.
"My daughter saw a film where someone was killed in the bathtub, and she refused to take a bath. Now she has seen Psycho and won't take a shower either.
What should I do?"
Hitchcock wrote back
"Send her to the dry cleaners" 😂

The iconic music was composed by the legendary Bernard Herrmann. The score was all strings and one of the most recognizable of all time. Herrmann, along with Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams absolutely owned film music for nearly half a century.
My dad saw the movie in 1960 and always said it was the murder of Arbogast that really scared him and made him jump, not the shower murder. It was fun to watch your reactions be the same as my dad's must have been.
Should watch Psycho II, a terrific sequel.

Great movie. Great reaction. There's a movie called Road Games that stars Janet Leigh's daughter (Jamie Leigh Curtis) that is is an excellent Hitchcockian movie. The sense of dread in it is quite something.
That Janet Leigh was super-fine back then. Even her quiet, calm voice.
In the end I don't think most remember or appreciate that Norman's hobby was taxidermy. Like the birds and animals in his parlor, that's how he preserved the mother's body.
It's just so amazing to me that there are adults who have not only never seen "Psycho" but have no idea what happens in it!

Always like your reactions to these earlier classic’s…Marion was played by Janet Leigh who is the mother to Jamie Lee Curtis of the movie Halloween..and the guy who played the private detective Martin Balsam you’ve seen him in 12 Angry Men as the jury foreman.
Hey Marian and Joy. Hitchcock was known for doing cameos in his movies. He's the guy in the cowboy hat seen through the office store-front window near the office door near the beginning.
For another scary Hitchcock movie do "The Birds" (1963), and look for his cameo early in. Any Alfred Hitchcock movie you do would be a good one!

Your reaction to when Arbogast gets blitzed on the stairs was priceless.
The most brilliant thing about this movie is that at the time Janet Leigh was a HUGE star and Anthony Perkins was just this young kid from a TV show. So when we see Marian we obviously think she's the main character, and sympathize with her, especially because she feels bad after what she did. And then we *also* start feeling bad for Norman, because his Mom's obviously *crazy* so when Marian's killed all of our sympathy transfers to *Norman* because he has to clean up this murder and he's under the thumb of this crazy woman. The reason why is because we're not introduced to the sister, boyfriend *or* the PI before she's murdered. So when we find out that it's not *ACTUALLY* Norman's mother but *Norman* himself, all that sympathy built up is just pulled out from under us.
Then nightmare on elm Street and scream took that twist

Just so you know, Marion, although Marion is more commonly a girl's name in English-speaking countries, boys do use it too. In fact, John Wayne, who always played a rough, tough, macho character on screen, was born Marion Morrison.

This is a classic, iconic, horror movie. Hitchcock made many great movies and always appeared in a small cameo in each one.
Rear Window (1954) is one of my favorites.

Marion's office coworker ("He must've noticed my wedding ring") is Hitchcock's own daughter Pat. Hitchcock himself is seen standing outside the front window when Marion enters.

I know, it's unbelievable!! Janet Leigh was gorgeous while poor Jamie is very plain..... obviously took more after her dad, Tony Curtis.
In 1960, this movie was considered horrifyingly gory because of the shower scene with splattering blood - which was actually Hershey's chocolate syrup from a plastic squeeze bottle! It was also probably the first Hollywood film to show a toilet, as well as to show a major movie star nude, or at least mostly nude. For these reasons it was criticized and denounced, but it was still a major success.

Many people quit showering for a while after seeing this film. Interestingly, you never see the knife touch the her or do you see any wounds.
So I just subbed recently and I'm glad I did. You two are intelligent, entertaining, and a perfect match together. Hitchcock is my favorite director of all time. I'm now going to look over your reviews and see if you've done other Hitchcock or Any of my other favorite movies.

I'm not sure Id say that about all three, but absolutely, Psycho 2 is a fantastic sequel, which pays massive respect to hitchcock style, while simultaneously being its own movie, without just repeating what you expect.
@@rrmenton8016 Psycho III was directed by Anthony Perkins and Psycho IV was a made for TV prequel which I enjoyed much more than the actual critics did. I didn't care much for the Psycho remake of the 1990's.

not exactly, as far as I know M, Düsseldorf Vampire from 1931 was the first film that portrait a psychopath murderer... Psycho is considered the first 'slasher' but that's quite an ambiguous label...

Filmed in my hometown, Phoenix - part of it anyway. Interesting movie fact - first movie ever to show a toilet flush. And chocolate syrup for blood down the drain.

Glad you watched PSYCHO. Now you should watch THE BAD SEED. It is another black & white classic that came out in 1956.
Note: Make sure you watch the B&W 1956 original and NOT the remake years later!

Janet Leigh is Jamie Lee Curtis’ mother, so it’s cool you just did “Halloween.” Her dad is Tony Curtis, another great actor. You should watch him, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe in “Some Like It Hot.” 🤙
Hichcock had a giant, 6 foot diameter, shower head made, that only had water spraying out around it's rim, so the camera would remain dry, while filming.
Don't forget Tony Curtis in "The Boston Strangler."
This film is a masterpiece of cinema. The sequels are also good films on their own. Bates Motel is a masterpiece from start to finish as well, a very worthy successor that lives up to the film
Great reactions you two 😁👍...I enjoyed all the 'Psycho' films...'Psycho II' (1983), 'Psycho III' (1986 - Anthony Perkins even directed this one) & 'Psycho IV: The Beginning' (1990 - with Perkins returning, Olivia Hussey from Black Christmas/Romeo and Juliet '68, C.C.H. Pounder from Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight/NCIS: New Orleans & Henry Thomas from E.T./Doctor Sleep and even the scriptwriter of the original Psycho returns also). I have all the films on HD Blu-Ray in my movie collection.
$40,000 in 1960 is just over $400,000 today.
Fun reaction. Masterfully directed film in my opinion and my friend Dorothy's father did the music score for this film. Is this the first Alfred Hitchcock film you've seen? He has many tremendous films you should see. His 1959 film NORTH BY NORTHWEST among others I think you'd both love.
Can we PLEASE remember this is based-on (then) recently-captured little Eddie Gein?
PSYCHO II and III don't get a lot of attention, but they're pretty good follow-up's. I can watch PSYCHO II every few years and the mystery and suspense remain excellent.
The most fascinating thing about this movie imo is how most of the audience first roots for the thief to get away, then roots for her murderer to be a better liar. Somehow it feels like they are both not as bad as their actions suggest, but we can not possibly know why until the end.
As far as i know, Psycho was the first movie where there was no other murder motive than the killer being insane.
You all need to branch out and watch older movies. Just because they are older doesn’t mean they don’t have value. That’s why they are classics, because they have stood the test of time.

I saw this movie in 1985 when I was 13. Really good time. Liked the movie a lot. Remember well when the sequel ms came out in the 80s. Nr2 my parents went to see in the theatre. I screamed and cried for not being allowed to go with them, but when 3 came out I went with a friend being 14 and they couldn’t stop me. 4 as well when I was 18. Loved all the sequels. Especially 2. 4 is cool too.

You must watch 'Psycho II' (1983) aswell, please! It is a surprisingly good sequel to this classic and begins 22 years after the events of this film when Norman is released from the nuthouse and goes back home to the Bates Motel...

Psycho was the original slasher movie. Norman Bates, Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and Buffalo Bill (Silence of the Lambs) were all based on the same real-life serial killer.
Weird fact: Because of the Hays morality code in Hollywood there had never been a scene that showed a flushing toilet before.
When Marion tried to flush the paper she was subtracting totals from 40,000, it was the first time ever in an American film that a toilet was shown to be flushed.
My mom said this movie had every female she knew, young or old, either taking showers with the curtain open or just taking baths.
Male here, did the same because of this movie and I hadn't even seen it.
The shower scene: one of the most famous in movie history. If you watch it again you will see that the knife doesn´t even touch Marion. But Hitchcock, being the great director he was, created the perfect illusion to shock the audience.
The real life serial killer Ed Gein was the original for the book on which Hitchcock based his movie (Gein is also one of the several serial killers of which the character "Buffalo Bill" in Silence of The Lambs is composed). Paramount Pictures had a contract with Hitchcock for one more movie but they refused to pay "Psycho" because they believed it was too brutal and disgusting, so he financed it himself, which was one of the reasons it was black and white.
You guys should react to Night of the Living Dead (1968), that’s another classic horror film & it was the first zombie movie ever made, I think y’all would like it
The sequel is well worth your time. $40,000 in 1960 would be about $400,000 today. The parlor scene between Norman and Marion has so many hidden and double meanings, go back and watch it again knowing the ending. Brilliant writing.
None of the sequels or the remake are any good. They all stink. Incomparable to the original.
