For those who insist on adjusting the intonation in "playing position" here is a quick Physics 101 for you: Your theory that (supposes) the weight of the head stock is somehow affecting the neck?? The strings are putting somewhere in the neighborhood of 200#'s+ of tension on the neck (when tuned to pitch) and the head stock weights 3-4 oz's maybe? String tension doesn't change (measurably) no matter what position the guitar is in ;)
One day I held in my hands an electric guitar that felt perfect. Everything just felt the way it should. I measured the devil out of that guitar and I have done my best to set every guitar up the way that one was. Even the string height I measured what it was and just copy it. Now all my guitars feel close enough to correct that I don't have to think about it I can just grab any of my guitars and play. I've been playing since 1964..
This guitar was possibly the most picky set up I've ever done. Nearly returned it thinking it was built wrong.
After I settled down and calmly worked thru the set up, all the stars aligned.
It's proven to be an excellent performer..

I don't understand how a P.R.S. guitar can ship in the lousy condition this one was in?!? I haven't played an instrument in decades. Nevertheless, I want to invest in a guitar & amp & learn to play. But, I don't know the difference, if I were to try to learn on a guitar that is physically wrong. Do you think the 'upper scale' PRS guitars are more trustworthy?

Not sure about the Santana's but all of the other PRS's I have seen except for the silver sky use floating trems that pivot on the knife edge of the screws. The screws and bridge are a little high so you can pull back on the trem.

I have one of these. Came out of the box flawless. Money well spent in my mind. Great video. :)
It definitely didn't leave our facility like this. I prefer the layout on these old Korean models because it made more sense. On the newer models they've changed the layout so that the controls are too close together.

There is absolutely no way it left the factory like this, I guarantee it! Whoever owns it or owned it previously, f'd it up! I bought a used SE 245 that was in 10x better shape than this!
A 1/16 string height at 12th fret !! I've been an amp/guitar tech 40+ years , and Dave is just a blast of laughs ! Nevertheless, I use to teach guitar tech classes ! And, there would always be some interesting techniques and theory's from individuals who work hard in reinventing the wheel ! Lololol 😄
Lol, I bought one of these New in 2012 at the devils house, GC. It was discounted because it wouldnt stay in tune. That PRS bridge system with the knife edges gets a lot of people who dont know how to set it up correctly. Worked great once set up. Fast forward 6 years to 2018 and I buy a Tremonti Custom PRS SE for $200 because the owner screwed the bridge screws all the way into the body because he couldnt get it to stay in tune. Local shop told him it wasnt fixable so he sold it to me. Filled the holes and reset the screws and set it all up and it has been rock solid.
Se are made in Indonesia these days, I had a custom 24 on the bench which needed, all the tuners dismantling and setting up inside plus thread locking, the nut was replaced and recut, the bridge which is floating needed a lot of work to make it smooth for string route and the knife edge I dropped to less than the recommended height, the screws are notched and you need to line them up straight, I also dressed the fret and tapered them from the 12th, action I dropped to 1.5mm at 17th, it is now one of the sweetest playing guitars I've done, it plays like a dream, sustains amazing, especially on its own after the 12th for sustain, it's a well built guitar and very easy to play, but it took a lot to get it to play well and stay in tune, which it did not like to do, not nut and bridge were the cause

I have one, but the previous owner put seymour duncans in and locking tuners on it. I love it.
0.12" is = 0.30mm 🙏 But i always have the impression that the Neck is NOT straight anymore than - but i like it like that and more 🤗 String height on 12th fret should be like 2mm Bass Side and 1.5mm Treble Side according to their Specs.

Although I can’t say if the way it came in was at the correct heights on the bridge, I can say for a fact that cranking the screws down to “deck” the front of the bridge on a PRS is also INCORRECT (which it appears that you did in the video).
A PRS bridge is NOT like a fender bridge where the front stays decked..these are actually a floating system where the whole bridge plate sits about 1/16” (1.5mm) above the top of the guitar (parallel to the face). Also of note is that these are not traditional wood screws like Fender used, but rather they have a grove around them that the knife edges in the bridge plate ride in…as such the heads of the mounting screws sit slightly above the top of the bridge plate. When set up correct,y, with stock action, it gives you the right range of motion with the action adjust screws (and never lets the top of the screws sit above the saddles, and never result in a decked saddle to the bridge plate). Supposedly failure to set up right could damage the screws and or the knife edges on the bridge.
There is documentation on the PRS website as well as countless videos.
Of course if you set it this way and the video didn’t show it, this was a lot of typing for nothing
As for 4 springs, that is standard on a PRs to float the bridge with a set of 10-46 strings
If a person wants to set up where they want the bridge to be “dive only”, you need a block of wood or something between the front of the trem block and the body, making sure to keep the bridge level.

I had a G&L with a Floyd Rose that the nut was put on with a gap like that. Luckily the gap allowed me to add a zero.fret since the nut couldn't be moved.

The mesurment for that bridge height should be about 2.5/32 above the top onece it is level and floating

2/32" = 1/16"...... "A sixteenth at the seventeenth" is a good rule of thumb. You can then tweak it from there.
Nice guitar. I had a PRS SE with a hardtail and it was very good. The tuners were average but easily changed to locking ones. Nice smooth set up on this one which was well out with the wacko nut install and a badly set vibrato bridge. The PRS SEs are tremendous value for money compared to the PRS US made ones but the US ones are beautifully made and finished and take the P out of over rated and over priced Gibsons IMHO.
It doesn’t matter. You might be able to detect some change if you had a super accurate measuring device, say like a millionth of an inch. I don’t believe anyone has ears that can discern whatever infinitesimal impact it might have in intonation.

Bought one of these a couple of weeks ago from Reverb that was in fairly poor shape. Finally got it all back together and went on a search and destroy mission for the correct specs and ran into the same mumbo-jumbo on the PRS web site. Still trying to figure out how they’re measuring out the nut height. I‘ve seen some guys depress the second fret and measure at the 1st, I‘ve seen some guys just measure at the 1st fret without pressing at the 2nd. WTF! PRS is also no help since they say if any questions refer to a qualified technician. Well, if Dave can’t figure it out……..Seems like the instructions were translated from Mandarin.

That is a sexy guitar.
Setting intonation is always in playing position. You don't play on guitar or bass which lay on the table. When you lay guitar like that the body make some pressure on neck so probably intonation will be too sharp I guess. And for me it's a matter of guitar. Not all guitars are the same (not mention players!). I tried your specs on many basses. Some play nice that way, some could be setup way different. Pickups - almost always further than closer to your specs - especially on big magnets like in bass humbuckers 9/64-11/64 is a minimum, string height - definitely by feel. Strings have different tension and different sizes so same height gives you strange feeling under fingers, and action is probably more feeling thing than specs or just buzzing. On most basses and guitars treble side can be setup lower and bass side definitely higher to get the same tension and buzz free action under fingers. Never have problems like having treble strings higher than bass ones. Today I setup one bass and I setup it by feel. I measure string height and was G 5.3/64, D 5.7/64, A 6.5/64 and E 6.8/64 - play like a dream and all strings have the same tension under fingers and behave in the same manner. Same with relief - there's no such thing as dead straight neck for sure. It never worked for me and I don't know how the hell can work for players who admit that they always set their necks straight. And here for me it's almost always .012 to even .024. Poor cutting nut and not best shape of frets won't allow for lower than that. And even with .012 sometimes still have some buzz. But again I measure everything when I finish setup to have those specs for the future setup of the same client guitar. Everything except intonation is setup by feel and sound.

Someone gooched this guitar long before you touched it..............I have NEVER played a bad PRS from the factory or properly taken care of.
Regardless wither it's their SE affordable brand all the way up to their private stock, they all leave the factory set up beautifully.
Apparently ALL PRS guitars sold in the US or Canada go through PRS America's quality control department and meet ALL the same standards.
What gauge strings ? I have a Santana and it came new with nines .someone really botched that guitar . Thanks for the video !!

Not sure if you're being serious? You know it doesn't matter if the guitar is in playing position or laying flat. The tuning will be the same.

Out of interest, when floating the trem, what was the measurement between the trem plate and the body underneath? PRS spec indicates a 16th, but that seems a bit high on my PRS Se Santana

Can i ask a question? Does most guitars with Stratocasterish shape have similar or same neck plates and bolts which hold the neck? Its a Fernandes guitar that's obviously a copy of a Jackson from the '80s.Even have that triangle inlays. Thanks.
Depends on where it was manufactured. Squiers can’t use a lot Fender parts outside hardware and electronics. In your case, you’ll have to measure hole to hole of the plate. Keep in mind that buying one from eBay or Amazon will most likely be close enough to work but won’t be perfect.
Alternatively, build your own using the old plate or use shorter neck screws and ditch the plate altogether.
I say this from experience in rebuilding a guitar from “junk”.
