As always, some useful techniques that you can apply to your own tactic and save - hopefully you find them useful. See you in the discord for the set-pieces

I haven't found this a good strategy actually, although not with your ideas though. I tried this with Arsenal, using Mikel Arteta's real life game management (tifo has a video on it) tactics and in the moment I give the opposition a foot hold in the game, it's almost troubling. But it somewhat the same in terms of goal conceded to Real life but I lose far more control than I always want. I'm crazy about possession. So I use instructions and OI that'll offer me possession without any immediate intent. Essentially waste time, balanced mentality (I play on it) hold shape, I still keep my high line, step up more, and take out prevent goalkeeper short distribution. It's worked quite well so far. The aim is to take the momentum out of the game without overextend my players. I pay attention to the intensity bar.
Mind you, I'm using Arsenal and we're quite good with possession averaging 63% possession and are number one in the league for it. I'm saying this because I think it affects the result. Also general possession training played a key role in making this work

I've found that changing to Hold-Shape and Regroup is a really good way of closing a game down. Go to Cautious too and I usually score 1 or 2 on the counter so a 2-1 victory turns in to 3-1 or 4-1 as the opposition press forward.

Seeing that most of the comments here are not-so-encouraging, I feel the urge to say some positive things here.
I have been using a variation of your game management tactics when I'm 1 or 2 goals up, and it has been working wonders. Yes, you give the opposition more time on the ball by not pressing them as hard, but by playing more cautious and keeping more of the ball, you also retain possession better.
Counter-attacking is a viable tactic in FM23, and if you have well-rested players with good levels of concentration, you could even get a nice counter goal towards the end of the game when the opposition is desperately trying to score. I would also add the fact that you need your players to be at least somewhat familiar with the "defensive" tactic in order to make it work (especially if you're switching from a high-intensity gegenpress to a more counter-attacking style). This is why I don't really change the positions, but the roles. If I wanna be extreme with it, I use special players for closing down the game.

    Good video!
In theory, everything you're saying it's logically 100% correct.
    It makes sense!
In reality: Going "defensive" has never worked for me across any version of FM.
The most I tend to do, is drop the mentality down a notch or two mid-match.
It's the smallest tweak possible, and it's the only one that's ever proven effective for me.

That tends to be the go-to for 90% i’d say, me included. But you’d still have your normal set-pieces in use with potential gaps at the back. Also, it’s worth noting that some roles aren’t affected by a change in mentality. For example. Inside Forward on attack, will remain on attack regardless of what mentality you choose. There’s a useful table somewhere

@@TheManagersSeat Agreed - but also, I’d still want my inside forward set to attack.
Going completely defensive, without giving the opposition anything to think/worry about, makes you more likely to sit and absorb pressure til you burst.
From my experience, it’s the smaller tweaks that tell your team to tighten up and be more alert that make a more impactful difference… without increasing the likelihood of capitulating.

I done what you said and i conceded in the 94th min after switching to the more defensive approach against a relegation side... to make it 2-2

Only 2 mins in but your "closing down" tactic variation is already a huge red flag given it as zero players attacking space to act as an outlet to relieve pressure once you've won the ball back. That's bad.

Did you’re opinion change by the end of the video? Hopefully you can see that I’ve controlled the players that press in order to preserve the shape. Pressing forward, player instructions, mid block, relatively high pressing. Cautious also has an attacking release via counter attacking, winger support and the CMs will support the striker. As you can see via the clips, which are a bit further than the two minute mark…
