- My favorite electronic instrument has gotten a major update by the designer himself, Rob Hordjik! After Later Audio were kind enough to send me one to check out. This was a blast to make, they truly made a great thing even better!

And stay Noisy :)
"Sounds like an acoustic instrument"... true. Fantastic demo, thanks a lot.
Excellent deep dive! Thanks!
Thank You. Best overview yet. I agree. The one! Also thanks for mentioning Derek. A remarkable human being. Hello from Santa Fe.
I still have the first commercial Benjolin by Epoch.... and I loved that. So of course I got this one by ALA.
At first I was not so impressed. But after some minimal patches and practice, I have grown to like this unit as well.
If you are into making wild random chaos, this will work instantly. However, I don't use it (them) this way.
I like to tame it, and steer it into drone-like evolving ambience.
Thank you
I am a beginner in eurorack and didn´t know this module. This is the reason i love and wanted a modular system. This sounds i can listen all day. Thanx for this video
nice to see how much he really enjoys this module.. I recently bought 2 kits of the version one with all the outputs at modular level..
by far the best tute for thi fantastic insstrument, thanks mucho
perfect timing i was just thinking about getting one! thanks for the tutorial
finally got it :)
A Benjolin + Intellijel Bifold coupled with the Make Noise voice, as I call it, consisting of Wogglebug, Maths, Moddemix, DPO and Optomix makes a great instrument and sound design lab.
My first time trying a Benjolin was actually at Derek's workshop in Berlin... I think around 2013 :) I met him again after so long at a conference in Ghent in June.
I’m about to grab my 3rd one!
I've got it with the two expansions in my rack. I just haven't had time to mess with it yet. This video is great timing!
Me and my friend, built the originals too, including etching our own PCBs.
Really love it.
I'm interested in buying, or building, one of these V2 Benjolins.
Thanks for making this review.
Thank you so much for this video and for showing the amazing range that the Benjolin has...... Forgive my asking such a basic question, but apart from speakers, the Benjlin and cables, what else would you need to make produce sound? I am a complete novice and am thinking about if you wanted to use it in different places... portably. Thank you so much!!
Hi Bob! Since this particular Benjolin is in Eurorack format, you need some kind of powered case in order to use it. A 4MS Pod might do the job for a small portable powered case solution. Enjoy!
Hope you and family have been doing really well, DIY Guy!
I’ve lost my synth momentum for a while now… but nobody does these videos better than you, in my opinion. Some day I hope to break my stuff out again and make some sounds.
Just before I stopped, I bought a few really Cool new things for my rack that I never even fired up, right after building a power supply that could run 50 modules or so.
Lame I know.
Sheesh… anyway… stay as Cool as you always are.
Chuk
Thanks for this wonderful exploration. Can you think of a way to change the looping length away from 8/16?
Thanks.
I just got one! Fantastic!
Sounds like it would either compliment or fight against the Error Instruments Indian Resonator. Good stuff.
Hi fantastic video !
I have a Benjolin module and could you explain to me how to connect both the Benjolin with Alan and Enigma together ? - which jumper do you connect the Enigma to, and the Alan with the Benjolin please ?
Thank's in advance
Try a Feedback-Loop: Benjolin LP Out->Clouds->Clouds Out L->Benjolin Ext in.
Inspiring demo!
10:32 the rungler manages to compose the chemical brothers' music:response!
Huuuuh, you are really gonna make me spend that money.... Well done I guess.
:D
Cool, haven't used mine for a while.
nice one
Good demonstration. Do you know what the term ‘classic’ means?
Great video! Thoughts on the MFOS VCO?
Solid analog VCO! Nothing fancy, does the job in tune and stably.
Hi there. Are the Benjolin v2 and the Befaco Noise Plethora similar in concept? I'm looking for modules to fill a small rack for the purposes of noise making and general "experimental" sound stuff (as far as my limited skills and creativity can take me).
Hi! They are very different. Noise plethora is 3 separate digital noise generators with a vast number of algorithms to choose from, each with two knob/cv controllable parameters. Benjolin is a synth with two VCOs, a rungler and a filter! That said, I can totally see them used side by side at a noise/experimental/drone performance. They would go very well together!
I can't seem to get a steady note. The pitch goes up and down like a slew. How can I get a single note without it going up and down? Do I turn the oscillator cv's all the way down?
What's the visualizer on your screen?
With the 3 Rungler pots set to zero (osc1 Rungler, osc2 Rungler and filter Rungler), is the rungler still somehow influencing the outputs of the filter, pwm?
Nope!
I was looking for an oscillator output to quantize the notes. Can you send the rungler OUT jack to a quantizer and send it back to EXT IN to get a more musical scale for sequences?
What you want is MI Marbles or a simple sample and hold module and a quantizer, i don't understand why people want to "quantize" modules that are designed to make weird noise.
Noooo, the Benjolin is already musical, quantizing it would be heresy!!!
The EXT IN is an audio input to the filter - not CV in, so no it won't work. The 'CV Pitch' inputs to each oscillator are not calibrated to 1v/octave so even if you did put quantized voltages in there, the oscillators wouldn't track them. Its an odd device in that even though it doesn't accurately track pitch I do find it very musical, just in a slightly out way. You collaborate with it. Don't fight the Benjolin - it will win :-)
@snorrevonflake I've got all of those modules but I love to make really weird sounds that are locked t a musical scale as the example in After Later's RUclips video about the Benjolin V2 patching out of the chance then I to the blend, then to a quantizer, then to Knits (off brand Plaits). I like how the runner arranges notes. Much differently then Marbles. I use it occasionally but it's not as near as agggressive with sequences as the rungler.
Can I buy diy kit?
Unfortunately no, prebuilt only
is the filter output now euro level? (rather than line like on the original?)
Yes!!! V2 has all the levels made to work in eurorack
