I was also highly interested in this product until seeing your experience and others. Thank you for sharing your experience on this. And I agree that it really doesn't matter how well a product works if this is the kind of service being provided. The product clearly had not shipped so issuing a refund should have been an automatic. No need for dialogue, excuses, etc. He had one opportunity to make a first impression and he blew it with you and also with another potential customer (me). Take care! And thanks again for sharing.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU FOR SAVING MY ASS $130. I saw his video then IMMEDIATELY started to see what the reviews were. Your video was the FIRST one I saw. So again THANK YOU I WILL NOT BE DOING BUSINESS WITH “THE FRET JERKOFF”. Sorry you had to go through this mess brother.
As a luthier I will say, and most other luthiers will say , that this product cannot be better the overall leveling and will never replace a sanding beam and crowning file ( or even a simple file) I suggest that you go to RUclips and watch the very many luthiers out tjere showing how to level frets ... They're going to vary from one to another slightly but for the most part they all work .. Once you learn and see how easy it is , you wont be scared to do it yourself.. When I first jumped into luthier work I started out by fixing a broken neck on my mandolin... then doing a neck reset on my Martin guitar... iI was scared... but the nobody around my area knew how to do it .. From there it got fun ... Hint , you can get away with those cheap Chinese leveling bars and fretting tools ... you will definitely upgrade later ... Whats the worst you can do ? Screw up your frets ? Okay . It will cost you a $150 fret job ... but I am betting you'll figure it out ..all you need is a notched straight edge ($10) , a cheap fret leveling kit that comes with leveling beam fret rockers , crowning files($20) some sandpaper in 400 600 800 grit from O'Reillys and your good to go .... Oh and of course a nit driver or allen wrench for the truss rod.. Try it . Watch RUclips videos. You'll figure it out .. You can but the good quality stuff later after you are sure you want to continue.. which I am sure you will do both ..
I can’t thank you enough for the encouragement and what a great comment. I hope others read your comment and take the advise you’ve given. I know I will for sure!! Thanks again.
@@MrNocaster I'm glad it helps you .... and I hope you take the plunge... Please take note that I'm not endorsing the use of cheap luthier tools... I just think that they are an cheap alternative to get started.... vs going to Stewmac and only getting one tool for the price of 30 cheap ones when your first starting out ... I did it .. although not I have several thousand of dollars in hand tools because I do it for other people.... It is so rewarding .. and most is common sense... You will find different luthiers on RUclips... and their approaches are different... like a shade tree mechanic vs a shop mechanic in a million dollar shop .. and some do put out bad advice...however they are easy to spot most of the time .. mainly because its a short cut ...I'll reccomend a couple good ones .. and if they pop up in your search for whatever your trying to fix or do on a guitar then I'd follow their advice. 1. Rosa String Works ... Jerry Rosa is a grassroots luthier...he retired last year but has a couple thousand videos out .... 2. John Hall of Blues Creek Guitars.. He's a qualified Repair tech for Martin... Note: these guys are most acoustic luthiers although they fix anything with strings.. Driftwood Guitars is a good site for electric and acoustic. Theres a whole slew of others ..for Electric. However.. the same principles apply to an electric as an acoustic when it comes to leveling it's still the same technique... Rock on
Much like yourself, I got into maintaining my own guitars because there was no "guy" to go to where I grew up. I learned how to make and setup guitars from books as there was no internet back then. Most guitars shops also sold limited parts and couldn't do anything other than a basic setup (intonation, change strings, adjust truss rod). So you had to buy from a luthier - that included a total of two blokes in my area an hour away LOL. Guitar tools were non-existent near me so you used something that would get the job done. But knowing the basics of what you were trying to achieve also helps in deciding what tools you need. Now looking back, I'm glad I learned to do it myself and invested in some quality quality tools. Then again, I've got some cheap home made tools that work just as well as the expensive ones.
That is too bad I really thought about buying this product. I guess that is out the window now. Thank you for your video Chris!!! So, sorry you had to experience this but now all of us will really think twice or more before we buy his product. For me I do not have time for games and I will not buy it.
Kudos to you for being so calm and collected in your responses despite this fret maestro guy being an absolute rude, slimy and a sorry excuse for a human. Hope you get your refund and the money used to get your guitar fretwork done.
@@guitarman... I never made a comment on Reverb. The negative comment (2) were on his videos and I made them after he denied my refund. I gave him the 1 star on Reverb and stand by it. I made the video after he accepted the refund with the stipulation that I return the product I never recieved. He should have just apologized from the beginning and let it go. I would have let it go myself and never thought about him again. But, here we are.
I'm glad i found your video. I was going to buy one of those fret maestro's until i saw his business practices. I dont care if its the greatest product in the guitar world, i wouldnt buy anything from anyone that treats their customers the way he does. I'm sorry you went through this, but thankyou for sharing!
THANKS FOR THE FOREWARNING! I was getting ready to order and this is extremely disappointing to me because i really had my hopes up about this product☹ I thought at last a fret crowning tool that not only made it easier but a beginner like me could use it. His reaction to you for a simple request for a refund was childish to say the least! Even IF the tool is a miracle worker i do not think i can do business with a person like him!
@NautilusGuitars is making a more detailed video about the product. Be on the lookout for that. It should be good. You made the right decision to hold off on it. He has one video with about 40k views, check out some of his responses to simple questions. The guys takes prick to a whole new level.
I’m glad I saw this video. I was seriously considering buying a few of these to match different radii on my guitars but I value product support over anything else. I will pass on this.
I literally just heard about this product last night as the video automatically came on after another guitar video ended on youtube and like you thought it was an interesting tool to maybe get for quick fretwork but then i saw the price and became less interested and now I see what your experience has been with them, so thank you very much for letting me know to take my money to a company that cares about their customers and not this one, thank you Chris
You're very welcome. I ended up getting the FretKisser and I got the Music City Bridge's Nut Slot Gauge. I realized that the nut is really more important to me than the frets having a few minor divots in them. I bought the Nut Slot gauge to help a few kids out who had some really hard to play guitars and were just starting out. Plus, I had some old guitars that needed some TLC. If folks are playing enough to wear down their frets in a year or 2 or even 3-4, they're probably not doing their own fret work. Even Uncle Larry takes his guitars to Gruhn's. Brent Mason, Vince Gill, and bunch of others go to Joe Glaser. I send every new guitar I get to Joe Glaser. He's a master and the money is worth it. I'd rather concentrate my attention on being a better musician than being a luthier. Thanks for the comment. I really do appreciate it.
I went to a nationally known guitar building and repair school in 1978. Opened my own shop in 81. I do unbound fret jobs for $250 and have done hundreds. I live in a rural area and frankly don't know what they charge in the city. I charge lots more for bound boards because of the time and difficulty. I'm 75 now and semi retired mostly doing work for people I have known for ages. This doesn't make sense to me. $130.00 ? Save your money and support your local luthier. There are LOTS MORE of them than when I started and the schools provide even better training. Looks like an easy way to screw up your guitar to me. Just my old 2 cents I guess
Good video - In theory, this product is not something I would use because any error in the fretboard will be transferred to the fret... BUT, I though, maybe for a spot level, this could be a useable product. However, after hearing his responses, thanks but no thanks...Customer service is 100% of any business and he sounds like he needs to learn a bit of humility... Especially since reverb is absolutely clear about shipping policies of 2-3 days, his initial response is where he was clearly in the wrong...
I couldn't agree more. He hasn't offered not one apology to anyone, especially when he is wrong. He attacks with more criticism then deletes your comment. I think this is why some of the videos are being made. He doesn't allow scrutiny on his videos.
I'm sorry to hear you went through this. You seem like a really nice guy. Thanks for the video. Hopefully my comment will help youtube get this out to people before it recommends his video. Fortunately something about him hit me the wrong way in the sales pitch video so I went looking and stumbled upon your video.
I'm glad I saw this... I was stoked on getting this product, but not so much anymore. The Golden Rule should always apply no matter what. My family has been in business since 1953, and it has nothing to do with Luck, and everything to do with Reputation...
I couldn’t agree more. Some people have a knack for destroying their own reputation. They need no help from me. I did find a video that I linked in the comments that he actually has the FretMaestro and uses it. Gives his opinion. It’s a great video and well worth the watch. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for doing a real service for the guitar community by highlighting this, we can all draw our own conclusions. Sorry you are going through this frustration.
Chris, thank you so much for posting this video and sharing your horrible experience with this company. Like you I'm just a guitar player. I am now disabled so I have more time on my hands and have been slowly learning to work on my own guitars. Because I'm disabled money has to be allocated wisely and I was about to buy 2 different Fret Maestros thinking they would save me money on the long run. I have done some research now and after hearing your story and others like yours I will not be purchasing them. Even if they were the greatest product on the planet I would not do business with someone who treats people like this. God bless you brother and thanks for saving me from making a huge mistake.
Thank you for sharing. Money is tight. I understand completely. I do believe working on your own guitars can be very rewarding and challenging at the same time. But absolutely worth it. I have some guitars that only Joe Glaser touches and I have some that I’ve set up. I can tell you that Joe Glaser does a better job than me. I was hoping this tool would get me closer to what Joe does but, nothing beats experience in my opinion. I’ll keep working to get better. I’m sure you’ll have it mastered in no time. Thanks again. God Bless
"I'm not a videographer"... could've fooled me, that was excellent! Very pro delivery, subbed hoping for more content (on more positive topics hopefully!) Sorry to hear and see the experience you're having with @SixStringers. Steven, dude, stop threatening members of the public and let your product do the talking - it looks brilliant! Get cracking on shipping those bad boys out and the videos and user reviews will start rolling in putting all of this negative PR to bed. Good luck!
@@SixStringers Noone called you a thief. Show me in my own video where I called you a thief. What time in the video did I call you a thief. Prove it. Noone made false claims. But, you are a liar. I stand by that. You just lied again in the comment. You lied about your policy and I have the proof. Reverb even acknowledged it and I have that proof also. So, you do what you have to do. I even gave you the courtesy of updating the description of the video concerning the refund, I believe in the truth, so I let people know when you have been forced to do the right thing. I haven't blocked you from commenting on my video like you've blocked everyone else who disagrees with you, but I will. Remember, ALL that you post/comment (not just here) shows your character and you think I'm defaming it? ( I have screenshots of all your hateful, spiteful, opprobrious, insulting comments) You've shown your character and in my opinion it is of a childlike behavior, very immature, very unprofessional, controlling, delusional, and narcissistic. I'm not a psychiatrist, but maybe you should seek some help. Now you are defaming my character with false accusations and I see no choice but to clear the record. It will take time, and what a hassle it will be, a problem no potential buyer wants...at the same time....it must be corrected.
I bought it and received it. It took about 10 days. I've used it and it worked. There is a learning curve and you need to level the neck via truss rod adjustment prior to filing even though he claims you don't have to. If you don't do that using a fret rocker to check your work as you go will not give you true readings. If your fret board has major issues with the radius not being accurate this file will not level the frets like a beam will. It just can't. It does create really nice and uniform crowns though. This is just another tool that works ok. Is it worth it? Maybe but I haven't done enough jobs to determine that yet. By the way I've only had positive communication with the seller but I didn't ask for refund either so take that for what it's worth.
I am glad it worked for you. Like I stated in the video, I hope the product works for everyone. I hope the seller is successful in this endeavor. Thanks for the comment and letting people know it worked for you. I think that’s important for everyone to know.
With ship station or any other place that allows the seller to create their own shipping labels, the postal service will pick those items up from the seller. So in creating the label at all, that alone suggests that the item is ready to ship.
That was the impression I got. In a box ready to go. But, it just sat there. The minute he put a label on it and a tracking number, the money was withdrawn from my credit card. Same day I ordered it, money was withdrawn without sending the package.
I just sold a guitar on reverb. I dropped it off last Saturday today is Saturday. It took until yesterday night to go from label created to the change in status to shipped. I have sold about a dozen things on reverb the last few years and this was a first for me and just happened in roughly the same timeframe you are describing approximately. Take from this what you will.
Probably. He just published another video that proves nothing. He sits in front of a guitar that's taped off and shows more CAD diagrams. I thought he was going to actually use it. He reminds me of late night commercials of products that kinda work, but really a waste of money. He has that reverse mortgage kinda vibe. Thanks for the comment.
I'm subscribing because I'm a guitarist and love working on my guitars and you saved me from buying this. You are nice, honest, and will not take any bull.
Negative comments should have to remain, had comments removed,if u tube wants interaction with the public opinion then why allow this, disturbing , suppression of speech is dangerous
I didn't have the time to finish this video when I commented this morning, but I'm finishing it and have been writing this comment as I do so. First, I want to say that you handled this very well and your responses were not only perfectly reasonable and proportionate, but you're well-spoken and clearly intelligent, which really helps this whole interaction have a clean slate. Your comments like "other customers opinions don't dictate my opinion" and "asking me to not be mad doesn't mean I'm going to not be mad" are poignant, especially with your excellent analogies and metaphors. No need to apologize for the length. This is important to get out. Trying to basically blackmail/extort you to remove a comment is right in line with my interpretation of this person. It's so messed up. He appears to have an extreme disposition towards slimy tactics. The first videos I saw gave me a very "off" vibe, but I gave him the benefit of doubt, and he deleted my quite sympathetic comment asking him to reconsider some of his marketing claims. I made a less sympathetic follow-up comment, which he illegitimately reported to make it hidden, which is what he's been doing to all critical comments. They're abusing the system to hide all criticism, but it's going to backfire, as it always does on the internet. The device itself has some major limitations, especially compared to the claims being made about what it can do. Most of the marketing is pure hyperbole. We don't need the device in hand to understand or discuss these, as physics are physics. All the data you need are already available, and I'm currently making a video breaking this down in deep, scientific detail. It's like explaining that a 2 horsepower engine can't tow a semi trailer. I don't need the engine in hand to prove this. The math is objective and easily provable. All of the refund stipulations are insane. Just like several other situations I'll go over in my video, these appear to be deliberately planted ahead of time to give him leverage to slip out of situations. I'm of the opinion that this guy is extremely shady and dishonest, and I'll be thoroughly making my case why. There are tons of verifiably false claims, massive exaggerations, and some outright unethical claims he's making to bolster his claims about the device and its use-cases. By the way, the "clogging it up" claim is goofy. This thing is supposed to be a diamond grit file. It should be perfectly fine if it's clogged up. It won't work nearly as well while it's clogged, but that certainly shouldn't damage the device or your frets, and it would be impossible to tell if that happened. Unless this thing is very poorly made, which might be why he's saying this. But I assume it's just a deliberate way for him to establish a catch-all to deny refunds. All of that said, props for sticking up for yourself! You did nothing wrong. I've been dealing with this all day every day too, just in a different way. People need to speak up when faced with deception, bullying, lies, and other awful behavior. And they are. He tried to silence you, and you said no. He tried to silence me, too. I said no, and fully committed to speaking out in the most surgical way possible. His behavior will only cost him.
Thank you for the kind words and the words of encouragement. Subbed to your channel and looking forward to your video. And yes, I speak up, I fight back, I stand firm on what is right and call out what is wrong. I also see more and more people doing this than ever before and it gives me hope. So, thank you again.
@@MrNocaster You're quite welcome, and I really admire your tenacity! It's a great quality, especially coupled with intellect and level-headedness. I'm not sure if you have previous experience with film, but you seem like a natural on camera. You have a great personality and cadence for it. Just wanted to mention that! Talk soon!
I would love to see this thing reviewed by some people, removing the creator unprofessional personality. I'm curious if it's actually practically good, but I'm really looking forward to your video. It's too new right now to have a large number of community reviews. Well said to both of you folks, it has me certainly second guessing a possible purchase.
@@methodinsane Thank you! Glad the info is helpful. I'm still hoping to have the video up midday tomorrow. Working on it at this very moment. There's so much to go over, between the tool itself, and some of the insane things the owner has done to silence criticism. I suspect he'll try to report my video, in an attempt to get it taken down, but he's just going to end up getting his entire channel deleted because once RUclips sees all of the illegitimate flagging he's been doing to comments, they'll most likely suspend his account. He's clearly unaware of that policy, and if/when he falsely reports my video, it will trigger a manual review and they'll see all of his illegitimate reports. lol. The guy is just digging himself a deeper and deeper hole.
@NautilusGuitars Well I don't know much about YT policy, but if he's starting a business he's not doing a good job regardless of the quality of the tool. If you guys lived in Europe (I'm in ireland) there's automatically some cover for services and products. 14 days for a service, eg Internet, 30 days products assuming they weren't used. I think. His behaviour is a joke, and while I like the idea of the tool, Im just learning guitar setup stuff but dont have much money to put into tools from Stewmac. But acting like a tool is not the sort of person anyone would like to do business with. He should be open to reviews, and critique, and learn from it and maybe improve his products and business. Talk about shooting himself I the foot. I hate drama but I'm glad people speak out like yourselves. 👍
Had same issue with that guy - after a week all he had done is 'create label'....when I asked for refund he gave me a rude answer "all sales are final"...and a lot of bs about how busy he is! That being said I did get the tool and a couple accessories and the product worked fabulous!
That’s great to hear. I’m glad it’s working out for you. I think he would sell a lot more if he would change his attitude toward his customers. No refunds and no guarantee is not going to work for me. No matter how well it works. Thanks for letting everyone know that you received it. I think that’s an important thing to know. Thanks for your comment.
I'm in the market a fret leveling kit. Thanks for the warning. I won't be buying from him. Ill go with the Fret Kisser and Music Nomad's Safe Zone Fret Crown file.
That's pretty much what I did too. I got the fretKisser and I already had a crowning tool so..The FretKisser worked great.I didn't get the chance to try the Nomad Fret Crowning file. Heard great things about it and saw great videos. I did purchase Nomad's nut filing 6 pack. You talk about nervous. But, sometimes we need to have a little more faith in our own selves. I practiced on an old acoustic I have lying around for years that definitely needed some work and everything turned out great. I'm sure yours will too. Sorry for the long response. Thanks for the comment
Thank you for this. Was considering one. I mean if the guy couldn't ship in the time he said, he could have at least covered the shipping cost, and if he already did that, then take the shipping cost off the price of the product, as a courtesy. Telling people he won't refund impatient buyers is a real bad move, but hey, if he wants to be up front about his bad business style, all the better. I just wish I had a tool like this to do repair work on my own and put those hack music shop guys out of business. This guy seems to be one of them. Too bad.
My question was, (after he suddenly made that statement up) what constitutes an impatient buyer? Who declares the definition of length of impatience. Well, he apparently does. So, the definition of length is subject to change without notice. So no refunds and no exceptions. Yes, he is a hack.
If there is one thing to learn here is to never talk with the seller when asking for a refund, keep demanding a refund because of the time line failure to ship, refuse to converse with seller in any manner,go straight to reverb to complain about the seller, when they look over your chat with the seller,he will then look like the jerk, for one thing if you have a depth gauge why would you even need to order his product.
I don't have a depth gauge, I'm not even close to being a tech. I did complain to Reverb and they strongly insisted on giving me the refund and I was able to finally get one shortly after this video was posted. But, Yes, I agree with not talking to the seller. I've learned that lesson.
Apparently this video made him UPDATE the listing?. his listing states "PLEASE NOTE: We are totally slammed with orders. Right now we are looking at 7 days before we can ship.. working 18 hour a day 7 days a week. Be in the know... We will not refund impatient buyers, no exceptions. We make to order. After 7 days REVERB will not help you with a refund and i find it strange he went from a few days to ship it to you to 7 days??? After 7 days you would have been shit out of luck!
No, not the video. The messages between him and I. I called him out on the listing. He updated the listing as we were messaging back and forth. The listing never stated "7 days," "made to order". It said "2-3 business days to ship." The video along with Reverb helped get the refund. He had refused the refund twice. 16 Minutes after making the video he commented. The video went up around 4:45pm. He commented 16min after video went up. Reverb sent message about full refund at 7:38pm.
Yep, 7 days. This guy does not have a guarantee. Go to his page and asked, I have, and no response at all. He's banking on people just ordering this "foolproof toy". I did...But something didn't smell right. So, I gave him his 3 days and I was done with this guy. Then the threats to sue me, demanding I take down a negative comment, So, I decided to make the video.
@@MrNocaster all i know is you saved me at least $130 and a lot of grief so thank you for that! 👍 I decided to just buy the tools from Stew Mac and do it the right way. a have a few junker necks i can practice on. it will be a bit more expensive and time consuming but so what as long as i can do my own guitars in the future. I am not even convinced now these "fret maestro's" will actually work? Kind of sounds "too good to be true" IMHO.
@@CS_Murphy_R9 I know the feeling..I've been buying, selling, trading guitars and never kept anything long enough for a fret level, or recrown. But, the guitars I have now i've had for some time and there's just something about being able to fix or service your own instruments that you love, care for, and spend so much time with. Then to hand it over to a stranger who may or may not jack it up. I sent one of my guitars to Joe Glaser in Nashville for a G/Bender and He hooked it up right, plays better than anything else I have.
i sell on reverb the seller does not get payed untill the idem is shiped with tracking number it takes a few days after shipping to get your money get a hold of reverb they should have your money this is b.s. you should get a refund not to put anybody or any thing down there are better ways of fixing your frets great vid by the way to bad you had to make it
That’s the thing. But because he has done several transactions with Reverb, he knows all you have to do is put a label on it and a tracking number with it and you get paid. He labeled it, gave it a tracking number immediately. From his place of business. That’s why he only uses USPS so he can get paid before it actually ships. USPS offers that for business, he printed it himself. I did get a full refund after posting the video. I wrote an update in the description instead of making another video. Thanks for the comment and helpful suggestions. Have a great day
Great video, your point was well put across. No-one is a bad person for requesting to cancel an order and having a refund. I agree with you and would like to see you get a full refund, an apology and an update on reverbs site stating the waiting time for shipment. I'm not sure what this product does but if you have high frets or high fret points, try gently tapping them in first as they might just not be seated correctly.
I wonder why my comment at "sixstringers" was not deleted...and I am glad I watched this video now! I had a feeling something maybe is not sooo proper with that tool...and my feeling seems to be right!😆 My comment at "sixstringers" (I take back the "StewMac" thing, these are really great tools!): "Nice tool...for a luthier! But not for me...i have several basses and guitars with a few different radii; 12", 14", 15.75"...that's all. The leveling i do with unexpensive radius sanding blocks with sandpaper attached...works perfectly. I have one notched straightedge for basses and one for guitars as well. Crowning the frets perfectly may a little bit of work and much time with unexpensive crowning files PLUS some other files like "key files"..., it works without destroying anything. That's it. I would NEVER buy such an expensive tool like that fretMaestro...I don't need it and I say: It is overpriced...like many "fancy" tools...for example from StewMac. Everyone does, what works for him/her individually. It is the result, what counts! And I have never in my live destroied a fretboard...not in now fifty years! Not everyone can afford expensive tools, and nobody has to...the main thing is that your brain works and you have patience! I had to write this because it was on my mind and I couldn't leave it alone! No offense intended.👋"
The Fret Maestro did interest me, although the demo videos leave a LOT to be desired. Anyhow, I emailed SixString after watching this video - received an immediate response and no mention of delayed delivery, etc. Too many red flags. It may be a great tool, but what will I do when it breaks and I need replacement parts?? I doubt this company will survive long under the current direction.
To the Poster of this video; You can use an everyday pencil eraser to clean a file with. No need to order a fancy "Fret maestro file eraser" or whatever he is selling! any file can clog with the metal shavings of what you are filing so a pencil eraser will get them off the grooves/teeth of a file.
I think it is an excuse to not give a refund. A pencil, carpet, but he insist on this one sanding eraser. The more I watched his videos, the more I doubted the possibility that it even existed. My thoughts were this may be a scam, so I got out as quick as I could. Check out his responses to simple questions and you'll be thankful. I ordered the Fret Kisser from StewMac, arrived in 3 days. It's on sale. Frets on 7 guitars are complete. Simple
The maker of this product is also mad because another RUclipsr posted a video, explaining why this product doesn't work like they claim. It doesn't, or cant, level frets. Since it works off the fret board and not the surrounding frets, how can it possibly level frets? I've never used it. And I've never made a video of it on my channel, but after watching the video explaining why it doesn't do what they say it does, I'll never get one. And from seeing your video, this person really needs to work on his customer relations.
I can’t tell you how hard it was to ask for a refund and not simply waited until it arrived. I was sold on this product. But, I have a lack of knowledge and experience with this specific topic. It was the messages back and forth with him and reverb telling me what he was doing suspiciously that really got me upset. I didn’t have my mind changed and solidified until I saw NautilusGuitars video and knew I dodged a bullet. But, my gracious, what a fight just to cancel and get a refund. Thanks for the comment.
Yes. There are now several RUclipss commenting on the theoretical shortcoming of this device. Nautilus is particularly astute. What struck me abut this video is that someone with a supposedly gamechanging product, supposedly produced after extensive research and at great cost, has a) overlooked what seems to be a fatal flaw (as many have commented, you can't rely on the fretboard as an index) and b) delivered a new low in customer care. Not a good look.
This thing is like a car crash I can't look away from, and the creator of this product has made himself look really bad. This will be talked about for years in guitar circles.
Regardless of product, the customer is always right period! I looked at this product when it popped into my feed but had too many doubts on its ability and cost although I may pick up the nomad safe file if it’s ever back in stock on account of my eyes getter bad and I can’t see my sharpie mark when crowning lol. Loved your vid brother too bad you had such a shit experience…
Yeah I bought the product, and have had dialogue with the seller. It’s clear from my interaction that the product not performing as described is going to be my fault and not the product working as advertised. Used it to level frets as described to correct taller upper frets causing bends coming out, did not correct that issue, I could probably figure out how to do it with adjusting the tool to different heights, but that’s not how the tool is advertised to work. I’d steer clear from the product, for the reasons mentioned in this video. The seller has a lot of excuses which means the product doesn’t work as described. You can figure out how to get it to work with some ingenuity, but it’s not straightforward as described and not as intended from its instructional video.
You should ask for a refund and you deserve one. I don't know if you paid $130 or $190, but that's a lot of money for a product that does not work. If you bought a lawnmower from Lowe's and it didn't cut your grass, you'd take it back, i would hope you wouldn't spend more money and time trying to make the lawnmower work for you. Also, thanks for the warning for other people to read and I hope you get things straightened out. Thanks for the comment.
@@MrNocaster I’ve learned in life it’s often best to just walk away. I can tell the seller is already setting up the conversation to be it’s something I did and not his product. So I’ll just warn others where I can to move forward with the fret maestro at their own risk. As you state in your video, how can he be honest about his product with his other behavior. Well he isn’t honest about his product and he actively tries to suppress critical dialogue about it. So yeah his product doesn’t work at least not how he states. I’ve got some ideas to work around the issues I’ve discovered that I’ll be trying out with it so it isn’t a complete loss on my end. I know the seller won’t refund from his behavior so I’m not going to bother, I’ve got better things to do with my time like informing the public about it in social media.

@CHRIS, Can you do a short video review of the Stew-Mac FRETKISSER? I am really considering that tool and wanted to see what others have to say about it?
Thank you for asking me for a review, but, I'm not the one to ask. I used the FretKisser, and it worked like a charm. Very simple and soooo many videos to choose from, from one's who really know what they are talking about. StewMac has a great demo of it. That's the one I watched several times over. I recommend it. It is easy and really straight forward. I have been considering doing reviews of the equipment I have, but, I'm just a guitar player. But, I will start to consider doing reviews just because you ask and I think that was very kind of you. It warms my heart and gives me confidence that, "maybe I could be good at it". Thanks again.
@@MrNocaster No problem on the video review. I can tell by your comment you are satisfied with it.👍 I will be ordering one and maybe a few files as i have really wanted to get into my own fret work. In my experience, the fret kisser is great if you have a few high spots here and there. But if the frets are all over the place makes more sense to use a beam, considering how the fret kisser balances around a high fret spot. And often enough just hammering frets can also eliminate high spots, as some may not have seated well enough.
Here's the reuploaded video from @NautilusGuitars. It perfectly and accurately dives deep into the truth of what is FretMaestro. This one will not be taken down! ruclips.net/video/y7vIDhZHZkk/видео.html
130 is a lot. him not giving a refund shows and tells a lot. It seems it's made to order and will ship directly from the manufacturer and he is complete hands off. He failed at communicating to his customers and he should be a grown up and own up to it. its not hard to give the refund, communicate with reverb and tell you if you dont return the item, you then will be charged. Shit happens like this all the time on ebay and reverb, they know what to do. This is basic online business and retail. This guy is a clown.
Fortunately for me I did get a refund but it wasn’t without a fight. Thankfully Reverb was aware of what he was doing and they were great at strongly encouraging the refund. I’ve suggested to Reverb to reconsider his store on their site but it probably won’t happen. I feel sorry for the ones who will not get a refund or even use this device and destroy their guitars and end up on the used market for someone to unknowingly purchase an instrument that has been destroyed with such a tool.
Not only does this guy’s customer service warrant being called out, but I feel the need to reiterate, as others have stated, that this product is based on a flawed understanding of the physical principles of fretwork. When the neck is straight the fret tops are supposed to be level to each other, ie all occupying the same theoretical plane so that none are low or high. This is traditionally achieved using very flat sanding blocks and near-perfect straight edges as a reference. The problem with the maestro is that by its very design it uses the fingerboard as a guide for the file. Fingerboards are made of wood and all tend to vary by a few thousandths of an inch across the whole surface. If you dressed your frets with this device you would just be transferring the error of your fingerboard to the playing surface of your frets rather than making them true to a nearly perfect straight edge. In the end you’d need a skilled luthier to fix the inevitable low and high frets. You dodged a bullet!
The absurdity of the fret maestro is clear when you think about scalloped fretboards. By the way of thinking of his creator, it would be impossible to get them fret leveled.
@@jordimateubartroli951 You have to make it level. Are you guys serious??? How is that a concept too hard to understand? Make the fretboard level then crown them. That is the procedure of any good setup and anyone who has worked on a guitar knows that.
@@EbonyPope Man, so a person who would like to level the frets on his/her guitar has to remove frets, level the fretboard, reinstall frets and level them? Then this tool is only for guitarmakers or people who's going to change frets? And the precision of fretboard leveling has to be very, very, very spot on, as you charge in it all weight of the fret levelling. Yes, it can be done, of course, but people need to know what work it's involved.
Damn Chris, sounds like a horror story. After seeing the Fret Maestro demonstrated by this guy, I had some reservations on it's effectiveness. Some of the claims didn't seem right. Then I found a couple of videos like yours. By the sounds, the guys breaking so many consumer laws it's not funny. Not to mention just the bad business practices. It seems like snake oil. I did get a full refund thanks to Reverb shortly after posting the video. FCC has been informed of his practices and a formal complaint has been made. I personally think he is finished, but who knows. Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it.
@@MrNocaster Thats great to hear Chris. I had a look at the only actual review on YT where the guy said the guitar had an S shaped fretboard issue and low frets. I really can't see how the fret maestro would make it any better if it's using the warped fretboard as a guide. I'm glad he got the guitar to play better for the customer but I'm sure in that scenario it would have been quicker and easier to use traditional methods.

@MrNocaster ya I noticed that after this video.. seems interesting.. I believe he needs to do a few moderations and it can be a great product.. just bad customer service..
@brianslady1968 Good point. We've got a number of well regarded luthiers explaining just what a mess the tool itself is. This video goes a very long way to proving it's not just a bad comment. It's a full on scam.
I've been building guitars and doing fretwork since 1985. I don't see that this device can actually save me any labor. The final levelling, crowning, and polishing can't be done by any "gadget". Not if you are seeking really good buzz free low action which is the kind of fretwork that separates the pros from the amateurs. This is not a tool that is going to be loved much by pros or even amateurs who have high standards of workmanship. No thanks.
The weird part is, I still want to try the product. But, sold by someone more reputable. Someone with a guarantee, not an excuse. Someone that will stand behind his product. Who just simply apologizes for any inconvenience. Maybe I’m asking for too much from a seller. Like I said in the video, maybe I’m a bad buyer. Thanks for the comment.
He's not listed with the BBB, but my attorney filed a complaint with the FTC. I think he's actually sold to around 33 people according to Reverb about 2 months ago. He has a lot of reviews, but each pick he sells is 1 review. So someone buys 5 picks, that's 5 reviews. 5 picks and 2 fretmaestros and that's 7 reviews. Very low number of people buy his stuff. He also sells on Etsy and for some reason is hilarious to me.🤣 Thanks for the comment
All this seems unfortunate... even though I don't know what the fret maestro guy's side of the story is. Can't come to premature conclusions. But I did notice his demeanor seemed kinda off in some of his responses to comments. Seems not to take well to criticism. About the fret maestro itself: there may be something I'm missing.. but dont know why I'd trust the fretboard surface as the measuring point for levelling frets. If I had done that, i wouldn't have been able to properly level plenty of guitars I've had. Wood moves, even if by small margins, and sometimes I need to compensate by leveling the frets the "traditional" way. These necks are not "broken unless you remove the frets and level the board". Some amount of compensation can often be done with leveling frets themsleves imo... For my own standards at least. I dont think fret maeatro would work for this. But hey -- it's quite possible I'm misunderstanding something about how it works. Just so far I'm skeptical about some of the claims made. At the very least, this would likely get limited use for me. But I'd love to see reviews by luthiers (which I am not).
@@MrNocasterever since I left this comment, read more about how the unit works and thought about it. Not much of a question in my mind about the tool. It doesn't take much to understand how it runs into issues. The video review made by the tech had very predictable results, likely for reasons that have been outlined by many now. That said, if he refrets a neck and levels the fretboard before fret installation he may get better results. But it shouldn't be surprising if he's back at point zero when he deals with another neck. And I don't doubt a good beam would do better anyway. All this has been very confusing.
@@Dimiguitar I agree with you. I totally understand and I hope I only played a small role in your confusion. "No faith" .....jesus crist that's ironic isn't it Lol Anyway, you could've just told the guy you just wanted to cancel the order without being extra. My opinion on your issue: First off you're not an instrument repairman.Second if you wanted to do your own fret replacement or fret leveling or fret dressing you should have purchases approx. $150 worth of Dan Erlewine's DVD's to learn how to DIY....then decide what you need to purchase for tools if interested in taking on the task of repairing your own instruments. I have talked to Steven....owner of Fret Maestro and when his products came out in 2024 he was swamped with orders. When I saw his product I thought it made sense to work the frets in that fashion other than the traditional sanding beam(which removes fret height way too much from what I have seen and experienced). His product to me would be like a manual PLEK system. So if you do receive your product from Fret Maestro to level your frets you should get the 150 grit file to start then move onto the 300 grit file.....then the 240 grit crown narrowing file. After that you'll have to dress the fret ends with a fret end file....then proceed with fret sanding 400 to 600 grit. Then I polish sand frets from 1500 grit to 12,000 grit. Cheers...!

As a luthier I will say, and most other luthiers will say , that this product cannot be better the overall leveling and will never replace a sanding beam and crowning file ( or even a simple file)
I suggest that you go to RUclips and watch the very many luthiers out tjere showing how to level frets ...
The way you write your comments is so strange I find it fascinating. But I do agree with you :)

@@MrNocaster Thank you! I just subbed to his channel so i do not miss it.👍
Watch videos on youtube and get the right tools. Buy a super cheap crappy guitar and practice. Toys like this never work.
Thankfully Reverb was very helpful in persuading the refund for me. Thanks for the comment.
God Bless
The thing is more of a crowning file than it is any kind of fret leveling tool like the seller thinks it is.
I think most people would agree with you on that. Too bad he won't market it as such. Thanks for the comment
"I'm not a videographer"... could've fooled me, that was excellent! Very pro delivery, subbed hoping for more content (on more positive topics hopefully!)
Sorry to hear and see the experience you're having with @SixStringers. Steven, dude, stop threatening members of the public and let your product do the talking - it looks brilliant! Get cracking on shipping those bad boys out and the videos and user reviews will start rolling in putting all of this negative PR to bed. Good luck!
Thank you so much. Thanks for the kind words.
Sounds like BS to me.
Which part?@@joeking433
Honestly, it just sounds like its a scam.

Reverb returns suck since changing ownership, hideout for scammers good luck at refunds
I completely agree!

I had a feeling something maybe is not sooo proper with that tool...and my feeling seems to be right!😆
My comment at "sixstringers" (I take back the "StewMac" thing, these are really great tools!):
"Nice tool...for a luthier!
He must have missed your comment. He'll see it now because he trolls my page.
You dodged a bullet in my opinion. I agree with you on longevity of the company. Thanks for the comment.
Simple

Useful thanks
I completely agree.

Yep... Couldn't agree more.
This thing is like a car crash I can't look away from, and the creator of this product has made himself look really bad. This will be talked about for years in guitar circles.
But why are there no youtube reviews of the Fret Maestro??? That totally perplexes me!

Sure. But I shouldn’t have to. That’s a last resort in my opinion.
For all the back and forth comments, he could have shipped you a unit and offered a 10% discount.
I can tell by your comment you are satisfied with it.👍
I will be ordering one and maybe a few files as i have really wanted to get into my own fret work.
I have a few necks i can practice on that are not worth a lot of money so if i mess up it's no biggie.
In my experience, the fret kisser is great if you have a few high spots here and there. But if the frets are all over the place makes more sense to use a beam, considering how the fret kisser balances around a high fret spot. And often enough just hammering frets can also eliminate high spots, as some may not have seated well enough.
@@Dimiguitar Yeah i am seeing on other vids that it is best for minor touch ups

Here's the reuploaded video from @NautilusGuitars. It perfectly and accurately dives deep into the truth of what is FretMaestro. This one will not be taken down! ruclips.net/video/y7vIDhZHZkk/видео.html
I have too many guitars with different radiuses. I'd have to buy every single one they make so I was out from the beginning.
That is why you first make sure that the fretboard is level. That isn't a flaw that is the requirement. How the hell did you not get that?
@@EbonyPope And what if it's not level?
Sometimes the old saying "If it's too good to be true, then it probably is" seems to ring true here. I hope in the end you managed to get your money back.
I'm glad he got the guitar to play better for the customer but I'm sure in that scenario it would have been quicker and easier to use traditional methods.
when stewmac says they use the fretmaestro i may also. i think if you contact your credit card company, they would put a end to this REAL FAST.

@brianslady1968
Good point.
No thanks.
It is a shame. Checked out the product videos which seemed interesting. Too bad that you had this experience which was clearly not up to expectations.
@@MrNocaster I would call that reasonable.
I wonder how many people this fret maestro has ripped off. I would say turn that sob into the Better Business Bureau 😮
Found one and left a link pinned at the top. Hope this helps

At the start, I could not know exactly who is in the right, not seeing the other side. But it became fairly obvious what's going on.
Cheers...!
Maybe Steven should have shown me the same courtesy as he shown you and I wouldn’t have made the video.
