Carnitine Shuttle | Purpose and Mechanism

- Lesson on the Carnitine Shuttle. Carnitine is an important metabolite derived from our diet or biosynthesized from lysine and methionine. Since the mitochondrial inner membrane is impermeable to long chain fatty acids, carnitine is used as a shuttle molecule (a carrier system) to transport long chain fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix for beta oxidation. Once carnitine has shuttled the fatty acyl chain into the mitochondrial matrix, carnitine can be regenerated and transported back out into the cytosol to be used again for fatty acid transport.

I am a patient with CPT2, - Levo Carnitine in a large does daily is the way I supplement since my liver does not create Carnitine on it's own.
This video is very helpful, I was diagnosed when I was 21 yrs. old and I am 55 now, CPT2 has been a challenge.
super helpful! so glad I took the time to look this up instead of trying to read this over and over again (cause I still wouldn't get it)
Great explanation. Clear graphics. Thank you sir. Very helpful. 👏
This made it so much clearer, thank you!

It was great, sharp, clear and very knowledgeably
Thank you for the video.
Life saver!! This is a perfect explanation. Thank you!
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks 👌
Thank you so much for this simple explanation!!❤
thank you, sir. this is super helpful !!!
really great video!! thank you !
best guy on youtube
Long chain means longer than 12 C fatty acids i think
Really helpful 👌
Most other sources say that fatty acyl-coa can pass UNAIDED into the intermembrane space, where they are acted upon by CPT1 in order to cross the INNER mitocondrial membrane. Comments?
I am 99% sure that you are correct. This explanation drove me crazy for the last 20 mins
im the
Thanks a million ❤❤❤❤
really good visual
Could a deficiency in carnitine cause ones HDL to go sky high after going on a low carb/high fat "ketogenic" diet?
THANK YOU!
thank you!!
But cpt1 is present on inner mitochondrial membrane
Thank youuuuu
