In addition to being one of the best ever, I would give him an A+++ for the tuning of his drums. Honesty, I love the way he tunes every single drum. And his mixing is superb as well. I will NEVER forget the sound of his drums in front of 80K screaming fans when playing with The Who at Vet stadium in Philly and Giants stadium in 1989! I remember thinking that I never heard drums sound so CRISP, CLEAR, and perfectly mixed! Just love this dude!
Pierwszy raz go zobaczyłem Warszawie na występie nie miałem wątpliwości , od razu wpadł w uch o ,specyficzna gra . Potem znalazłem jego nagrania z młodszych lat . Rewelacja ❤🎉
Simon Phillips is just one of the best. I love how he never stopped using his monster kit no matter what type of music he's playing. He never plays anything but Zildjian As. His sound is always his, and he makes it work in anything.
Hey Drum Channel peeps: there’s a solo Jon Anderson song called “Animation” that Simon plays on which has the quintessential “Simon” groove to it. Odds are HE hasn’t heard that song in a while as I believe it came out in 83. Apparently a fire destroyed the masters so that album never even made it to CD. It’s an obscure song, but the drumming on it is top notch.
One of the greatest things I ever saw was Simon playing really slow quarter notes on the ride cymbal. Despite all his facilities the ability to make those slow quarter notes mean so much was the takeaway from that show. Genius.
Masterful! No overplaying, musical yet so tasty and groovy. His accents are all in a right places. Its a musical drumming, yo wont get bored hearing it over and over .
Simon has been my favorite Drummer since highschool and I'm now 66 his sound and creativity is like no other and have several fav drummers but Simon is tha Man! And his Tama Drum kit always sounds incredible! 👌
So good 😍🙏 Simon Phillips and Stewart Copeland are my most favorite drummers, alongside with Phil Collins and Chester Thompson, because I admired the latter two so often when they played their Drum Duet’s on tour with Genesis. I‘ve been playing drums since 1993 (I got 15 in this year) and I would like to have only 5 percent of the skills a Simon Phillips has 🥴😉 All the best from Germany 🇩🇪 and thx for this awesome video, Philipp 👋
This is so so enjoyable. In an age of fake everything and AI assisted content, it’s so freaking cool to watch and listen to Simon play. Thanks so much Simon! Keeping it real. So please tell us what mics are on the toms? The sound and mix is wonderful.
In the ‘80’s I saw Jeff Beck in Seattle. I walked in before the show and saw this massive kit on the stage, setup just like Billy Cobham’s, with the ride and china on the left, double bass, 6 rack toms and so forth. I was sure Cobham was going to play, then out came this fresh faced kid with long curly hair who proceeded to blow my mind. Cobham couldn’t have played it any better (perhaps not as well). Been a fan ever since.
What a well- balanced and greatly tuned kit. Worth noting that he doesn´t have any tom-mics here or snare mics and it translates so well, so I guess most of it is from the two overhead mics (and kick mics).
Awesome as always, Simon. I like the version of this song over on Little Big Beat Studios channel much better. Quicker tempo and more fireworks from Simon.
For some reason I can’t really explain why I admire open handed drumming/drummers, for me it feels like they’re a more developed human race. His setup is so interesting, 3 snares, hi-hat at same level as main snare which requires open handed drummers to be able to play. It’s a big kit compared to the average jazz/fusion drummers and I think it would be even more interesting sounding if he used smaller tons 🙌👏👍
Oh Simon, if you’re listening, blistering- saw you at the Hillside Holiday Inn for a Drum seminar-Chad, Wackerman and pat Mathenys drummer. What a drip. good stuff I lusted after a Tama art star kit couldn’t afford it. I play Ludwig Im in Chicago. still like sin after sin, you know what I mean oh your who tour was great great I saw you in Wisconsin-a.k.a. Alpine Valley cheers cut my chops playing 707’s they’re almost like timbale sticks! oh, one last thing, I bought a pair of platinum new beat high hats-on your recommendation-good stuff loud Tony Williams stuff still use them with my alternative paiste 3000 sound edge hats
I can see cables running over the bass drums up the tom post. I am guessing he has some kind of internal mounted micing system. I know there was a system a few years back (MAYE) internal mic system that enabled you to mount internal mics by a series of bungie type chords that would attach to the lug bolts. You could float the mic inside the drum and run the cable out through the drums air hole.
Nope, just overheads and kicks. We might have mic’d the gong but can’t remember. This was 2017-2018 possibly 2019. I’m his drum tech, been doing it for 7-8 years now

Very open sounding. Which I like.
He has always been one the best and a big influence for me His drums are big and sound perfect
Thank his drum tech.
One of rhe best drummers in the world and has been for years in my top five What a monster player👍👍👍🌎👍👍💯
Ain't that the truth?! I could listen to him for hours.
completely right ! incredible !
Who else is on your top 5 list?
Simon Phillips is just one of the best. I love how he never stopped using his monster kit no matter what type of music he's playing. He never plays anything but Zildjian As. His sound is always his, and he makes it work in anything.
For me, Simon Phillips has been one of the world's best drummers since the 1970s.
No argument there
Guitarists are 10 a penny but drummers like this are very rare. His groove is absolutely brilliant!
Simon Phillips will never cease to amaze me. Every. Single. Time! Bravo, Sir!
What a sound. Simon's dynamics are the best. Best of the big (huge) kit players in my opinion.
Continuing the Cobham legacy - for the 21st century,so few players can play open convincingly
Oh my goodness. This is BRILLIANT.
Greetings from Port Elizabeth, South Africa 🇿🇦
Tremendous, spectacular playing. Masterful. Every fucking time. Brilliant.
Simon Phillips: Young people would say "Goat" 🤘
The most musical drummer alive, period.
Common ! He is aaaaaawesome always had been ... but...
Simon is looking and sounding great, and he still has the best looking and sounding drum kit in the world!
Still got it! He’s timeless.
You know you've made it if you have Simon backing you up on those drums!

Big thanks for this. The album is on Spotify
I love that tune. Classic early 80s Simon. His drum sound is amazing
Fusion music at it's best. Incredible
One of the greatest things I ever saw was Simon playing really slow quarter notes on the ride cymbal. Despite all his facilities the ability to make those slow quarter notes mean so much was the takeaway from that show. Genius.
Not a casual listener of jazzy-prog or whatever they played here but never got tired for one second listening and watching this.
Such a master! So much musicality and sound! He shows that we don’t need gospel chops to make a culmination ))
Man, those old-style RC’s sound SO friggin good, and that snare is to die for. And, that goes for Gadd and Weckl that days, as well.
Brilliant playing by a brilliant player. Simon is and will always be among the greats. My hope is that I can achieve half the skills this man has.
Masterful! No overplaying, musical yet so tasty and groovy. His accents are all in a right places. Its a musical drumming, yo wont get bored hearing it over and over .
I never get tired of watching him play. The guy is flawless.
Master ❤
Simon’s a god. And, damn, the sound of that kit. Drum heaven.
Amazing. I saw Simon at a drum clinic at Atlanta Pro Percussion in the early 1990s. I was blown away and became in instant fan.
Simon es, sin duda, uno de los grandes. Le vi en directo en Clamores, en Madrid, y fue una pasada.
The amazingest of amazing drummers
Master of Perfektion 😊...
..I wish I had his tunebot settings...Perfektion in sound !!
Simon has been my favorite Drummer since highschool and I'm now 66 his sound and creativity is like no other and have several fav drummers but Simon is tha Man! And his Tama Drum kit always sounds incredible! 👌
Love his work. In addition to all the other great stuff he does, the trio with Hiromi (piano) and Antony Jackson (bass) was astonishing.
Most efficient drumming technique ever
The sound and the precision 🔥🔥🔥
"Simon Says" more than enough!
He "talks"with his drums!
Simon rules "big time"!

Hands down the best of the best no question.
Awesome Thank you for Sharing! 💯✴
Superb Playing
I really wish he could have kept this line up with Howe for another couple more albums. Much as I love protocol 5’s line up.
So good 😍🙏

Wow!!!

No mics on the toms, only bass and the overheads, staggering right!?
The other unknown dimension for many drummers, including me, named: open hand drumming! 🤯

Are they using just kick mics and overheads only for this recording?

They should call this "An off-beat symphony".
