Incredible musicians playing some amazing fusion!!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!! Simon and Greg are two of the most technical, precise, and skilled drummers and guitarists on the planet!!!
F' me. That may have been the best drumming I've ever seen. Simon's style is so unique. Love how he snuck in the double bass at the end. Many will not be impressed, but I love how it filled in the sound. All the other little things he did in his solo were just sick. Tight band and the drums sound so sweet.
I'm impressed by the musicality of the double bass you are talking about. But over all, there is a musical intention that is beyond the virtuosity skills that does the job to impress the mainstream audience. He has grown above that. This is a brilliant musician who wants to get better and better until death does him appart from music.
@@josequintero5877 Yes there is a RUclips video where he explains that he is right handed but taught himself to play left handed so he can position his Toms more aesthetically. I’ll see if I can find it.
Greg Howe is one of the most underrated guitar player ever. He has an unbelievably rich vocabulary. Often, when i listen to Guthrie Govan i can clearly hear some Greg Howe stuff going. I don't know much of a role model Greg has been for Guthrie but they are clearly in the same ballpark, in regards to vocabulary as well as their technical finesse. Having Simon and Greg on one stage is almost unreal!
I've got to say. I grew up as a young kid and neil peart blew me away, then I was turned on to Carter Beauford. Then I come across Simon Phillips. I just never ends. The game always changes.
Good back to the 80's and listen to Simon play with Judas Priest, Michael Schenker Group, Jeff Beck, Pete Townsend, L. Shankar & others. He has always been ahead of his time, EVEN NOW!
Yep - they're all great. Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) has a new album coming out with Liquid Tension Experiment. If you haven't seen / heard their first 2 albums you can check them out on RUclips. Absolutely Mindblowing!
I'm astounded there are no comments about how great this session is. Premium SP. Old school riding on the Swish and towards the back end, in come the double bass drums... thats SP's trade mark of old . The first time I heard him was on a Gary Boyle album called "Electric glide" and the track was "Hayabusa". For those of you who dont know it, check it out. I think Simon was about 10 years old when he did it. :-) only joking, he was 21. :-) You have all these "Gospel" drummers these days who try to cram as many notes as they can in to a bar and leave no space for taste and or flavour in their playing. Alas , SP does that in spades. He can do a single flam in to a chorus and say so much more.( A fill that comes to mind are the fills on pete towsend's album "white city" and the track is "give blood") check it out, you wont be disappointed..... :-)
Simon still has to be one of the most musical drummers the UK has produced......he never ceases to amaze me with his drumming; I've followed his career since he played in his dad's band
Indeed. I wonder why his name never comes up in all those "Top 10" drummer threads. Sometimes when I read those it seems like Neil Peart and John Bonham are untouchable gods that no one will ever top. Well perhaps that's the case but that leaves eight spots to be filled and Simon should be part of it, imho.
Amazing playing (as always) by Simon Phillips and the other members of Protocol 4. You can sense that you're in for a drumming treat around the 5.00 mark, when he brings the band done and starts building the tension and volume on the snare drum! I've been a fan of Simon's for over 40 years and he's still the master!
This track is killer! I agree- 5/4 for for the most part. The bridge/chorus(?) has three bars of 5/4 + 1 bar of 4/4. The riff/groove for the keyboard and drum solos is 9/4.
W O W !!! What mics are on Mr . Phillips Rack Toms? Your studio has the absolute most beautiful sound ANYWHERE !! Outstanding job to the Engineers and tech crew ...
Somebody with one of those monster kits that really knows how to use it.
Greg Howe is the greatest "unknown" guitarist of all time. He's a monster player with a really unique style. I've been a fan since the Shrapnel days.
Word he's not more wel
Known outside his shrapnel days HOWEVER HE IS:-);-);-);-)
Ashamed to say I was unaware of him until I saw these videos. Shame on me, what a player!
RIP
Really hadn't come across him until I saw this. Very cool, unique style indeed!!
Reminds me of Holdsworth & Jimmy Herring
Oh shit 🤯!!!! That was so great I almost peed my pants!!! Bravo
Simon Phillips, what a present to the world. At least my world. Thank you ....!
...Simon is absolutely brilliant. Genius at work.
My goodness. I’ve always admired Simon’s playing. Now he’s skyrocketed to the top of my list of favorite drummers.
fantastische musik......vielen dank!❤
Absolutely. Bloody. Brilliant. If you don't like this, you need an urgent soul check, IMO. :)
I love how the engineer is just loving it. They're mixing themselves, really.
👍💖✨

You gotta love the level of talent a guy like Simon Philips can attract.

For some reason people keep getting the keyboard player's name Wrong. Otmaro Ruiz is the Pianist and keyboard player.
Fucking mind blowing musicianship.

You won't get a better sounding kit than that... same with the cymbals. Simon has it
