  • EGO 56v Select Cut XP Mower vs RYOBI 40v Crosscut review and detailed comparison. This comparison took a while. The EGO 56v select cut xp and the Ryobi 40v crosscut are both amazing machines. I was surprised and shocked a few times with some of my findings but each had some key qualities you have to see. I sure hope this video helps you in some way. I will also put some links down below for last years head2head video and other items. Thanks

FYI your installing the mulching plug incorrectly on the ryobi. There is slot on the back of the mower. The tab on on the mulching plug should insert into it. The plug goes down around the bottom of the mower.

@@TechMadeEzy Yeah it looks like it will be a pain to install it. It looks like there is a metal bar insert there. It was driving me nuts on why it would be there. I am assuming you put it in at and angle then push downwards, then finish inserting. Look forward to the video.

I have the RYOBI and I listen to the review as I cut my grass. I cut zoysia at the high level. I never thought I would use electric powered lawn mowers. I will not go back to gas. PS I believe the RYOBI doesn’t sound as loud due to the pitch of the engine. I bought the entire RYOBI line weed eater and blower. I recommend keeping you blade sharp. It made a difference battery life👍🏽

I was going to skip around. However, once I listened to his voice, manner, patience, etc. I just kept listening.

He is so thorough and takes his time explaining everything that I am truly not only informed very well. I am also entertained.

Glad that I bought the EGO Select Cut mower last year, after watching your comparison videos then! I like the lighter weight mower, but do not care for the handle grip. My hands turn red when using it, so I wear power tool gloves when it is not hot outside. My mother has a Kobalt 80v mower and the handle grip is much easier on it than EGO. I would have bought one of those, but Lowes did not have them in stock then, and I read several reviews that the batteries did not last as long as the EGO batteries. Hope this EGO lasts! I had my last gas mower for 23 years, but had to pay for maintenance. I bought an EGO 16 inch chain saw, primarily for the 5 amp battery that I need to complete my 1/2 acre lawn in one day. Chain saw works pretty good though. Thanks for the reviews! Really good reviews!

Thank you so much for sharing yeah not every mower is. perfect for everyone. Having a gas mower for 23 years and going to battery definitely isn't easy. Take care of your batteries and that'll make them last a while and from time to time check for deals on kits so you can get batteries cheaper

Thinking of buying one of these. Your video however long is so detailed and thorough. There are things on it that we would not have thought of and are good to know. I'm a disabled veteran and the gas mowers are getting to be a problem for me now. There getting to heavy to push or handle. For me it is mainly a matter of maintenance and ergonomics. These lighter mowers would benefit me tremendously. Thank you for the in depth video.

Another great review! It seems, however, that using EGO’s high-lift blade with the bagging demo would have been more true to life. Still, a great demo! I have zero regrets with my LM2156SP (or any of my EGO lawn equipment). The 10Ah battery is MORE than enough for my 10k sq ft lot. While I don’t have an in-ground sprinkler system here in Clarksville, TN, I have just installed six hose-fed, highly-adjustable Orbit Perfect Pattern rotating lawn sprinklers at strategic locations-hoping to thicken up and green up my lawn all around the house. A thicker lawn will be much more enjoyable with my new EGO. And, frankly, it’s just nice not having to mess with gas and oil. My lawn equipment and topped-off batteries are always ready to go when I am. What’s not to love? Thanks again!

Good video, I watched the entire footage. One more thing to mention - the Ryobi is $150 less than the EGO - makes the Ryobi's shortcomings a little easier to swallow. I just purchased the mower one step lower than the Ryobi crosscut - I bought the 3-1. It is identical in features to the crosscut without the dual cutting blade. Same batteries and all. I paid $449 on special at Home Depot. Very happy with my purchase and $300 less than the EGO.

Thanks for the video, lots of good info.
I have Ryobi's 40v self propelled model from last year. I also still have, and need, my Husqvarna all wheel drive gas mower.
    Some comments:
I have 3 main complaints about the electric mowers and a few things I find annoying.
    1. The self propelled situation. On a gas mower the drive function is belt driven. The harder you pull the lever, the tighter the belt gets and the more it propels. Meaning I can pull the lever partially knowing the belt is slipping a little but still allowing the mower to move under its own power. More importantly, every time I pull the lever on a gas unit, the mower moves. Whereas on the electric there are 2 issues. There is always a slight delay from the time you pull the lever until the mower moves and, my biggest gripe, when cutting around a tree, as an example, I will move forward, pull back and reposition, move forward etc a few times. With gas I can pull back, engage drive and move seamlessly. With electric, not only is there a delay as mentioned above but I think some safety engineer that lives in an apartment that has never mowed a lawn decided to put in a feature where you can't re-engage the drive unit after releasing for like 3 seconds. Very annoying. Does the new Ryobi do that? What about Ego?
    2. Vacuum. I saw someone else mention this too. There are 3 situations in lawn mowing where strong vacuum is required. First and last cut of the season to get leaves up. For me, the third time involves weeds. I try to walk my lawn before mowing and pull any weeds I see and usually toss them into the clippings bag on the mower. The weeds and lawn clippings end up in same hefty bag. Since I ain't perfect, I miss a weed or two. In this case I used to pull the weed as I was mowing and toss it in front of the mower in my mowing path and the gas mower would suck it right up into the bag. These electric mowers, in my experience, don't pick up leaves or weeds worth a darn. How do these 2 mowers with dual blades handle this situation? I still use my gas mower for first and last cut of season.
    3. Light weight. These are self propelled mowers so I don't see weight being a negative accept with regard to battery life. My gas mower is heavier than my electric which allows me to better see my cut path or more accurately, my wheel path. I think the Ryobi being heavier is a positive.
My model from last year is a single action to remove the bag for dumping, I like that better than the new one which clearly requires 2 hands. Lift the door and the lift the bag. Bummer. I think you list a con for Ego that the blade keeps spinning when you pull the mower in reverse. How is that a negative and are you then saying that Ryobi cuts the motor off when reversing? I like the new Ryobi charger and hate the old one. Power cord is on the wrong end of the charging unit. Just an annoyance.
    Thanks again, sorry to ramble.

I’m doing some additional cut tests some light and some heavy so let’s see how they both do.
EGOs motor does stay engaged when you are using self propel and decide to pull the mower back, it’s more if a design but still many complain about it.
Cutting comparison will launch soon so hopefully it will help answer some of your questions.
      Thanks for watching much appreciated

Thanks for that tidbit about the rear/side discharge of the Ego mower. Just picked up the Ego mower today and as I was trying the different discharges I could not get the side discharge to fit properly. Something else to mention, all the batteries in the Ego line are interchangeable. If the 7.5ah mower battery craps out I can use the 2.5ah battery from my trimmer to finish the lawn. Don’t know if that’s the case for all other manufacturers or not. Nice review.

I very rarely leave comments on videos but, after seeing this one I have to! First thing I love is just how detailed you are when comparing these side by side. You took every little thing into account that most people probably don't think about or they could care less about it. Also, the fact that you mentioned handle height and got the opinion from your fiancé, who is shorter than you. I'm 4'11, so I really appreciated that you took that into consideration because, most reviews don't usually use more than one person, of a different stature to test. So you get brownie points from me with that! I can't tell you how many lawnmowers I've used that even on their lowest setting is still to high which makes pivoting it a pain. The effort and time you put into this is amazing!! I'm very thankful for this video.

The $600 price point on this Ryobi is same exact price for the Ego LM2135SP. That would be the closer comparison as compared against the LM 2156SP. I am going to guess if you already are in Ryobi 40V line then this Ryobi makes the most sense, since you can add runtime by throwing in more batteries you already own.

The hard part in picking a cordless mower is when you are NOT into the Ego, Toro 60V, or Ryobi 40V lines already. Then the decision becomes very nuanced based on your other tool needs and plans. If you ever want a snow blower, keep those models and bare tool prices into your calculations.

I've been using Ryobi 40v battery equipment for years and can vouch for their quality. I've only had one batter fail within the 3 yr warranty and they replaced it. I bought the Ryobi HP Crosscut mower reviewed in this mower and it's working great so sold my gas mower (Toro Recycler). The only complaint I have is that when I bump up against something on the side, the deck flexes and I can hear the blades rub the inside of the deck. Not a Ryobi issue per se but something to think about with mowers with plastic decks. For me, the weight savings is worth it. Overall, I recommend picking a system for the batteries and going for it.

After much head scratching... I figured it out and thought I should let you know. There is almost zero leakage if you install the mulch plug properly. Granted there are no instructions, but try this... It works (even if it looks like it shouldn't). The mulch plug has a rectangular notch in its bottom edge. It also has a plastic spring catch within that rectangular notch. (Kind of a horizontal tab with a semicircular curve along it's edge). If you look at the bottom of the discharge chute, where you insert the plug... It also has the same plastic catch (but inverted so the semi circular edges lock together). You need to push the plug DOWN, after you slide it in the whole way. (This is where it looks weird, because the bottom edges don't line up. The plug bottom overlaps the bottom of the deck, but trust me it works. You will now see that the two plastic catches within that rectangular cut-out, line up. You then have to firmly smack the plug forward. The two catches will snap together, locking the mulch plug into its final position. Almost zero leakage... Try it out, and maybe amend your review. It would help everyone to know how the plug is supposed to work, even if Ryobi couldn't be bothered to tell us... Oh and by the way, it still has weird gaps on the inside (although much improved with the plug seated properly), under the deck. It does catch a little grass, but not too much. Thanks for the detailed review! Keep up the good work.

So long as you still have the receipt and you are within the warranty period, even if you hadn’t registered your product the warranty claims department will walk you through it and register it while also doing your claim over the phone. I had zero problems with them and once we got through troubleshooting and he deemed the product faulty, he setup shipment for brand new products without a fuss and at no charge to me. He also walked me through proper disposal of the faulty product. Very good customer service, I was very satisfied and I have always liked using their products.

Consumer Reports rated the Ego lower in bagging compared to the Ryobi. I pretty much bag 100% due to Magnolia and pine trees on the property that are always littering something. Another thing that I liked about the Ryobi is the bigger wheels and I sensed that with the extra heft reviewer had the impression that the Ryobia deck is more robust. I am not kind to my mower. Last week I blew a big pile of magnolia leaves, blooms and branches into a pile on my driveway and then mulched/bagged it up with the Honda. Ended up with a half dozen of the brown yard bags filled up. This is a routine occurrence at my house.

Well, on one hand I appreciate your hard work and in depth review of the little things BUT the most important things like how does it cut only had 1 cut pass and very little time with poor camera angle (facing forward when mowing?). Really wanted to see if they trailed grass along sides of deck when mulching. My Toro leaves distinct lines of cut grass down both sides of deck and I have to blow off or cut and bag. Also no testing of the side discharge and how they compare. All the minutia is great but none of it matters if the actual cutting features don't do a good job. I would really love to see the Toro 60v Super Recycler head-to-head against the EGO LM2156SP. They're in roughly the same price category, both considered the 'best' of the battery-powered lawn mowers, so I think if someone is considering one, they're probably looking at the other too. Also, as someone with a mostly fescue lawn, I'd really like to see these compared at the higher/highest settings around 4" cut height. Especially given that the typical drawbacks with battery powered lawn mowers seems to be lift, so lower cut levels should be just fine but not necessarily higher at 3.5 and above.

This is a great channel and forum. I have turf type tall fescue and KBG / rye so I mostly bag on a higher setting. It’s tough to be all things to all people. I would love to mulch more. If the Toros were lighter this would be an easier decision. I think a Toro will be what I try first. Tough to spend $600 on last years Select Cut, let alone $750 for this years, sold out everywhere tho.

I think the Variable speed Toro self propelled is a better match against any recent Ego. I have not tried, but when going through some of the ridiculously tall grass in Kite Army’s or Dirt Monkeys tests, the ability to keep self propelled disengaged means 100% of power goes to blades. Toro may need to look at dedicated drive motor to eliminate parasitic driveline loss, or use larger motor if they stick with belt driven self propelled for electric. Even their gas ones look underpowered on Personal Pace drivelines.

Very detailed review. Great job. I have an older Ryobi and I would never buy another. Warranty is pointless as my mower was gone 4 months last summer. I used it once and same problem. Then they wanted to charge me another $30 evaluation fee. The problem is in all the safety switches. I had to bypass the ones in the handle to get it to work. Many articles and videos on these issues. Also it says 3 3/4" height but it is only 3" measured by me. Way too short for the hot summers here. I would like it if you could verify by measuring if both these mowers really have a 4" max height. Thanks Joe.

Very interesting about the mulch plug leakage on the Ryobi. I have the very first gen 1 Ryobi 40v 20” mower. It is brushless, but not HP, not self propelled, single active battery port, only two LED headlights (they are quite bright though) and only a single blade. It is quite lightweight which is very nice, however, the underside of the front handle will cut into your skin if you don’t wrap it with something. Honestly that is my biggest gripe with the entire mower. It can only mulch or bag, no other discharge options. It DOES have a spring loaded rear door as this Ryobi did so I was very surprised to hear that last years higher end Ryobi model didn’t. Mine does not exhibit any of the grass leakage that yours does so clearly at least in that sense things have not improved over the last 4 or 5 years. That said though, the mulch plug is a pain to install in mine as well. I believe I got mine in 2017 and according to Ryobi’s own website, it is reversion 2 of the first gen and built by Homelite. Money was tight and it was the cheapest cordless I could find and considering that I live in a townhome, gas was not an option and I hate cords. I don’t kid myself into thinking it’s some top of the line mower because even when I bought it it wasn’t. It has terrible lift though so occasionally I need to go over some dense or wet spots a couple times. I am planning on installing an EGO high lift blade this year though so I’ll see if it improves the lift/cut and how much it hurts the battery life. All that said though, it has been completely fault free, leak free, and actually does a good job especially considering the fact that I think I paid $200 for it. I actually quite like it regardless but especially for the price. It came with a 5AH battery, which was the largest they had at the time, and slow charger. I believe EGO is definitely a better product but for over 3 times what I paid for mine, and several hundred more then the current top of the line Ryobi, it damn well better be. Never seen your channel before, stumbled upon it by accident, awesome review though! I love your attention to detail.

@@2down4up Well done! Thanks for responding. Did it improve your cut?

    • @2down4up
      @2down4up 2 года назад

@@karagi101 Yes very much so! My number one complaint with the mower was its lack of lift. I have a lot of patches of tall thin grass that would simply push over as opposed to get cut. I used to have to go over these areas multiple times or even stand the grass back up by hand and tilt the mower back and drop it down onto these patches to get them cut properly. Now I can practically trample these patches down and the high lift blade will easily suck them back up and cut them in one pass without issue. It also bags even better thanks to the greater volume of air being moved. I would say mulching is the same, not really great but workable.
It was time for me to dethatch my yard a little while ago so I dropped the deck down to one step up from the lowest level. The mower was actually difficult to push while running due to the amount of suction under the deck. I have a small yard so run time is not at all important to me but with that said I have not noticed a decrease in runtime. Yes the mower is clearly working harder to initially spin up the blade but at the same time since the blade is heavier it almost never throttles up to its higher speed anymore. Where’s before it would rev up several times during each mow. In fact I was actually under the impression that it was in the high speed mode all the time. When it starts up it will hunt for a stable RPM for a few seconds. You can hear it doing this as it revs up and down a few times before picking a stable speed and I was never really able to tell which speed it settled on. Since it never went into the higher speed, and it was definitely going through really thick patches that would’ve caused it to rev up with the stock blade, I assumed it was always in high speed. I was wrong. I was being lazy and let my yard go for two weeks without mowing and while cutting through some very thick areas I actually heard it rev up once. It was at that moment that I learned that it was in fact NOT running in high speed all the time and indeed did still have the capability of doing so if necessary. The only reason I can think that it doesn’t rev up as much as it used to is the weight of the blade. The stock and Ego high lift blades are the same length and width but the ego blade is noticeably thicker and heavier. This extra weight is what I assume allows it to cut through thicker stuff without having to rev up as often. Bottom line is I’m super happy with the results. Aside from the mower making more noise, there didn’t seem to be any downsides at all.

I think you should do the sound decimal tests at the handle controls for the mower. That's where it matters most for the operator. I think when you have it so close to the deck you can get inaccurate readings from things like wind discharge blowing on the mic.

I haver this same Ryobi and I'd like to point out that you do not have the mulch plug installed properly. At 39:30 you point out a gap under the plug. I am at the end of my 4th year with the Ryobi Crosscut 40 volt mower. Pretty boring review really since nothing has broken, fallen off or melted. Still using the same set of blades that came with it and still using the original batteries most of the time. Ryobi sent me 2 free 6ah batteries and I use them once in a while, but not often. Charger also still working fine and still only using 1 battery at a time on the mower, then dropping in the other when this one is depleted or with 1 bar left. Since I cut my lawn often, the motor does not have to rev-up, therefore they do not overheat. I also own the blower and trimmer. I think the trimmer would wear me out before the 4ah battery dies. The blower is another story. While it works good without using the turbo button, I always have to use it just because of the extra power. Using the turbo button causes a fast discharge which causes them to heat up so I cannot charge them right away. That being said and despite constant overheating and cooling down, battery still works fine and just as long as when I purchased the unit. Now they have the AWD Ryobi with other "goodies" added to the unit, but in my opinion, it is basically the same as my unit. If I had lots of hills I would definitely use the AWD. Turbo button is nice to have on demand as well, but again rapid discharge=heat= problems with charging or unit shutting down. Another thing to mention was the suction which I felt was lacking. After some research online I found that this is a common problem with most battery mowers and some gas mowers as well. That being said, if you have large leaves and not small leaves like I have (holly tree) it is not an issue. In summation I enjoy my Ryobi and it is a pleasure to walk behind and mows Texas St. Austine grass really well.
