- A new report has warned that increasing numbers of asylum seekers housed in a former military base are attempting suicide, self-harming, and refusing to eat as conditions worsen.
Research director at The Centre for Migration Control Robert Bates joins Talk’s Kevin O’Sullivan to discuss this further.

My dad has worked his whole life from removals, MOD, late night plane cleaning, warehouse working, traffic marshalling, food waste. Hes ill now at 55 and homeless, the council, charities, social services, GP, nobody can help him apparently. What a country. All those taxes paid to be abandoned while illegals get food and a room

I spoke to a homeless ex soldier who served Queen and country, he said the politicians stand at the cenotaph every Remembrance day in vain, for show and for nothing and not one of them will stand before us and fight for us and thank us, while others defile the cenotaph, disrespect our people and take everything and leave us on the streets.
My word what a heartbreaking conversation that was.

Over 60, seriously disabled, living in my van with my service dog for 10 years now. Any available housing goes to our illegal immigrants. I have to endure pain, xtreme heat, xtreme cold and don't complain.
They are threatening suicide because they were promised a house of their own for them and their family., for the £5000 pounds they paid a trafficker . Put them in detention Type accommodation all the time and they’ll soon stop coming. I didn’t see Edward Snowden complaining when his life was in danger . That’s the difference between real people in fear. I used to interview Asylum seekers in Kent , absolute load of rubbish most of them come out with. They all know someone who was at risk , so they fled…. Didn’t stay and help their friends, family etc as any normal person would do. Chancers , 99% of them .

They tried this in Australia when they were held in detention centres off shore from the mainland , they even set fires on the camps and tried all sorts of other unsavoury actions to get to the mainland. Don't fall for it as they will do anything to get their way.

People who threaten suicide don't plan to commit to the suicide. True suicide cases usually don't tell anyone or leave a note. They isolate and actually attempt the suicide. Ive witnessed and spoken to many who have tried these past ten years. Legal citizens who can't get affordable housing after paying into the system their whole life. My prayers are with those survivors daily and God rest those who were marginalized and harmed by such political ploys. 😢

As the majority of them are low skilled they are going to struggle (assuming they work legally). Did they think they would be able to afford a nice, shiny new build? A Victorian terrace? A studio apartment overlooking a river? Most young people can’t afford to move out of their parents into their own home unless they get into a relationship or flatshare until they settle down. The non criminal ones must be disappointed.
