- Hello everyone! This week I sang They’re Only Human from Death Note:The Musical ft. @CalebHyles !
The Death Note musical right has no right being as good as it is. Even though I’ve been blasting this one all year round, it’s perfectly fitting for Halloween! Big thank you to Caleb, Jeysun and Selah for lending their incredible talents to this cover! mwuah mwuah thank you all!

The original's voices actually sound like they are gods looking down upon us mortals. But Anna & Caleb? They sound more human. They are rich elitists stepping on the poor.

I personally think that they sound like a serial killer couple as when anna says "maybe death can release something more then we share" maybe showing that she's interested in people's lives and the idea of heaven while Caleb only likes the kills
I really like how Caleb sounds, his entire lyrics are about being bored and seeing the humans as simply a source for his own life span so it makes sense that his voice would reflect that he doesn't really feel much for them as a whole. While Anna sounds enthusiastic and curious about them, it's a nice contrast especially because the characters they represent are kind of the opposite of how they're acting.
This song is from the Death Note the musical. Calebs character is Ryuk and Anna is Rem which if you’ve ever seen death note the lyrics make sense
Honestly the flat tone and bordem in Caleb's voice makes the song that much more enjoyable(๑•̀ㅁ•́ฅ)
@@cf5354 I know that, i've read the manga and seen the show. Just think it really fits since i always saw Ryuk as the more enthusiastic about seeing humans due to his overwhelming boredom while Rem while loving Misa always seemed so reserved.
I would say he like this when he ain’t screwing around and making a megalomaniac have a super powerful weapon. It’s so cool and fun way to reimagine him.
@@j.a.r.5974 I haven't watched the full musical, only listened to the ost, but from that, they seem to really focus on Rem's love for Misa and her fasicantion with this love, while Ryuk's enthusiasm is turned more into him just using humans as predictable playthings to momentarily cure his boredom. The tone this song sets fits their characters for the rest of the songs.
Caleb's and Anna's "They're only humans" has reasons so different that I didn't notice at first. Anna's is her telling Caleb to not be too hard on them after all *they're only human* while Caleb's sounds like he's disappointed in them because *they're only human*

I mean, that's pretty much exactly what this song's about. They're "shinigami" which people normally think of as a Reaper but that name literally translates to "death god" so I think calling them gods is about right.
And they've definitely lost all concept of mortality, lol. Takes pretty much the whole musical for one of them to regrasp said concept.

This, but Caleb also sells the ‘tired and bored of humanity’s shit’ with how he delivers his lines. Where Ryuuk in the original sounds like a cackling madman who would giggle at anything.

Unfortunately Caleb did not reflect Ryuks character at all and even though i love Calebs voice I do not like this cover :/ ... It is just my opinion though! I respect yours, but don't you think that it does not fit especially compared to original + Ryuks personality?

Second, I partially agree with you! While he doesn't reflect Ryuk's character at all, if you look at it from another angle it kinda feels opposite in a way, like a weird sort of personality swap/different universe. Either way I still like it lol

I like the duality of the line "their only human" for Ryuk and Rem. For Ryuk its more of a their only human, they cant accomplish much. For Rem it feels of a don't blame them, their only human.
YESSS, especially with the tones they have in the OG version. Rem sounds more like she’s sympathetic towards the humans and Ryuk’s tone of voice is demeaning and mocking, like he believes that humans are insignificant creatures and merely a source of entertainment for him

@@nottechytutorials I don't think so, I think it was a direction Caleb chose for the character. He could've very well been experimenting with a different style, which would make sense for him. They've sung many songs together, none of them where he's seemed suppressed or toned down in favor of her vocals; it's not in her character. Besides, I doubt he'd want to sing with her if she was like that.

I think Caleb did great, BUT he's so good at singing passionate and crazy that it's strange to make Ryuk quieter. I wanted to hear him belt out "...never knowing their truth is ANOTHER MAN'S LIE!"
It's pretty different from the original, but it's still good.
Caleb doesn't come across as creepy or menacing as Ryuk, but he still gives a performance that feels cold and apathetic. And I think it works very well, considering the what the song is about.

The contrast between Anna and Caleb is interesting as I feel like it also matches with the characters. Anna as Rem is fascinated with humans and is hopeful, which is shown via the vibrancy in her lyrics. Caleb as Ryuk, in contrast, couldn't care less about humans, which is reflected in how mellow his lines are. Excellent work to the both of you!

Y'know, I was expecting a little more of Ryuk's cynicism from Caleb, but it was still amazing nonetheless. With that said, Anna carried this one for me. I think she did a really good job of capturing Rem's detached admiration. But yeah, hearing the two of you is an unexpected treat. Keep up the good work, you guys!
Ryuk isn’t 100% a psychopath. He’s driven by being a horrifying death god. He’s seen so much death he’s desensitized.
I say that purely because he’s really protective of his humans, he seems to cherish them a lot.
There was also a situation with another Shinigami where their book was in a bad guy’s hands and it was totally horrified and Ryuk was like “hey man it’s okay we’ll get you your book back,”.
So whilst he does have a cynical/out of his mind side, Caleb wouldn’t lean into that so much.

This is arguably better than the English demo recording, tbh. Anna's performance especially, though Calebs' is an awesome alternate interpretation of Ryuk
While I do think Caleb's interpretation is clever and it works, I really like the original Ryuk's mocking cackle much better.
Caleb's interpretation is just... bland, Anna is amazing but Caleb does not sound like he wants to be there
@@vinetail5735 Caleb is supposed to be eternally bored like most of the shinigami that watches humans. Caleb could have given a more bombastic performance, but considering he had recorded his part multiple times, I don't think that was what Anna was looking for.

@@vinetail5735 . Different strokes for different folks. I personally like the contrast between Anna and Caleb and think it fits Ryuk and Rem. (Ryuk being someone who dropped a death note to see something different and Rem who did it to save a human she had grown to love.) I wasn't trying to really change you're mind, just give possible context to the choice of performance.

This version and the original version somehow have a very different vibe, especially the original Ryuk Voice vs. Caleb. I think the original sounded more like he is making fun of humans while Caleb sounds more disinterested.

I love Caleb's music and I've been waiting forever for anyone to cover songs from this musical, so it kind of hurts to say this, but this wasn't one of his better showings in my eyes. In the original song, Ryuk's lines were sung with a mocking intonation, which I don't think Caleb captured all that well in this cover. Instead, he seems to be singing his line with a somber tone, which was more Rem's thing in the original song; which is the whole point of the song, that while Ryuk and Rem describe humanity's faults as "They're Only Human," each of them means diffferent things by that.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't necessarily a bad cover, but I think the direction Caleb took with his parts makes it lose a bit of what made the original work so well, which is especially disappointing since I've seen him do better.
Yeah, it's definitely not the same interpretation as the musical. I feel like Caleb went for more of the "too bored to put in any energy" instead of the "antsy bored slowly becoming interested" like in the musical. I listened to it again with that distinction in mind, and that helps a bit, but I agree that it's not the best possible, especially paired with Anna's energy and emotion. I remember thinking Anna would be a terrific Rem, but I think Caleb would be a better Light than a Ryuk.
(also self-plug I'm working on covers of at least four songs from this musical because I love it sm. Most likely to get either The Game Begins or Stalemate done first, but I also want to do Where is the Justice and Hurricane.)
