Ansley M. If it’s an American adaptation, why not create new characters, instead of making our originals characters American? It would have been a fun movie then.
I adore the double meaning when they sing "they're only human" The male voice says it to demean and belittle them, saying that they're insignificant creatures. While the female voice says it as a sort of defense of them, to say that they're fragile and can't help being the way they are. Awesome song.
It's really good foreshadowing for how they end up interacting with the Death Note holders. Ryuk never saw Light as being equal to him, just a source of entertainment. Rem, though, truly adored Misa and would do anything for her, even die.
I think the writers of this song made Rem mention love and how she’s “fascinated” by it as foreshadowing for her falling in love with Misa. And once again, what results is a VERY beautiful song sung by her. I love this musical.
@@KingNazaru don't know if you've watched the musical, but she's definitely gay for Misa in the musical. She has a whole song about being in love with her which she sings while gently caressing her. In the anime it's more arguable.
Insignificant fun fact: The “doomed to live pushing boulders uphill” is a reference to a king in Ancient Greece, Sisyphus, who tried to outsmart death in order to become immortal. Of course, he was caught, and punished by Hades* to push a bolder uphill, and once he reached the top, he could stop. However, every time he gets close to the top, the bolder crumbles and reforms at the bottom of the hill.
What if Ryuk is the way that he is because he understands the mentality of “one must imagine Sisyphus happy” so it’s the Camus kind of lifestyle where the most immediate pleasure appeals most to him

Anyone else think of Human by Christina Perri every time Ryuk and Rem sing, “They’re only human” because it sounds exactly like Christina’s line “I’m only human.”
This song is so good! I love how Rem seems fascinated by us but still sees us as entertaining children rather than true equals. I like how Ryuk sees us as so pathetic and worthless yet relies on us for entertainment and to extend his life. I love how its two people confirming life is pointless yet arguing whether that makes life beautiful or empty. Or how they both are choosing the focus on only half of human nature showing that neither fully understands us despite thinking they do. It really feels like the two sides of death having a discussion and I think that is such a delightfully gothic idea for a song

God this is such a good song. Helped me came up with two new villains for my dnd game. A pair of gods who are the embodiments of stagnation and change and have have grown bored and the two dance through a city of humans and come up with a plan to rid them of their boredom
Honestly they missed out on a great opportunity to have a reprise of this song. Light could have sung the song later on to justify his actions. It’s okay to kill them because ‘They’re only human.’
It would also show just how big his ego's grown. The power's gone to his head, and he believes he's above humanity, the god of the new world. Yet despite being a "god," he can't escape the same actions he condemns humanity for.
For some reason, this reminds me of a Terry Pratchett quote: "Thunder rolled… It is said that the gods play games with the lives of men. But what games, and why, and the identities of the actual pawns, and what the game is, and what the rules are-who knows? Best not to speculate. Thunder rolled… It rolled a six."
Actually In the death note anime heaven does exist So living a good life does have a reward in life. This fact goes to show that people who use the death note end up as gods of death with no memories of their past.
I love how you can tell that Rem is kind of fascinated with the humans but Ryuk sees them as the Shinigami equivalent to trashy reality TV, and thinks Rem is on his side.
never seen death note, and don't particularly care for anime, but my sister sent me this (bc i'm theater person) and it is a BOP only wish it was on spotify smh
Literally just came to the Death Note concept album because Jeremy is in it and I just gotta say THIS SONG IS LIT. RYUK AND REM ARE JUST VIBING AND I AM LIVING FOR IT.
I got recommended this album and the gender swapped cell block tango (also with Jeremy) in the same day, and now I’m obnoxiously mad at Supergirl for never giving him a chance to properly act.
Rems and Ryuks dynamics here is spot on for their characteristics and I love it Ryuks interest in humans Discord and seeing their emotions and actions as a form of entertainment for his boredom while Rem genuinely loves and Cares about misa an wants nothing more then to protect her and take care of her for her old friend that died for her ^^
man the two tones of thiis song are so wonderful. when rem says "theyre only human" iits more of a lament, she feels piity and iintriigue [and also, of course, love] but the way ryuk says iit iis amused and diisgusted. just the symboliism and dualiity iis [chefs kiiss]
Rem is the character this musical too the most liberties with. I’m not complaining cus an adaptation require changes and the changes to Rems character seem to make sense.
Honestly? Without thinking this is context from Death Note I could definitely see this song as the conversation that two writers have over torturing the characters of their stories. Like, the first writer (Ryuk) finds a lot of fun in making bad stuff happen to the characters in his books, and the second one (Rem) also tortures the characters in her books as much as the first one but has a soft spot for them and is super invested in her characters development or general morality. I don't know why but this would be too fitting if their context was this instead. And like that the lyrics would change a bit, for example instead of singing "They're only humans", they sing "They're only fictional" or something like that.
I never understood why they were happy about the years given to them by the human, arent they "eternally bored" it sounds that at the end of the day they have a pretty miserable existence

I literally could not imagine a more perfect Ryuk. And while I'm not sure her voice really fits Rem, it's still bloody gorgeous. This is probably my absolute favorite song from this.
LYRICS:
[Ryuk]
Look at how they crawl around
Upon the ground
Like little ants
[Rem]
Yes, but how they fascinate
Confusing fate
With what is merely chance
[Ryuk]
Isn’t it a laugh?
[Rem]
Isn’t it a shame?
[Ryuk]
Thinking there is someone in Heaven to blame
[Rem]
Yes, but even while blaming fate for the lives that they lead
They hope for the lives that they need
[Ryuk]
Living every day ‘til the day they die
Never getting answers
[Rem]
Yet still asking why
Going through the motions as if there will be a reward
[Ryuk]
While we stay eternally bored!
[Both]
They’re only human
They don’t see
Who they are is who they’ll always be
Only human, after all
[Ryuk]
So they push and they shove
[Rem]
With this thing they call love
[Both]
‘Til they fall!
[Ryuk]
Isn’t it a farce?
[Rem]
Isn’t it a waste?
[Ryuk]
Struggling to face what can never be faced
[Rem]
Yes, but maybe death can release something more than we share
[Ryuk]
I really don’t know and don’t care
[Both]
They’re only human
Standing still
Doomed to live pushing boulders uphill
Only human, after all
[Ryuk]
So they give and they take
[Rem]
Hoping someone will help break their fall
[Ryuk]
They will pray, curse, live, die
Never knowing their truth is another man’s lie
[Rem]
Eat, sleep, love, hate
Like a leaf blowing in the wind
[Ryuk]
Watch them all vacillate!
[Both]
They’re only human
They can’t see
[Ryuk]
All the years they could give you and me
Only human, after all
[Rem]
So they give and we take
[Ryuk]
‘Til their silly hearts break
[Rem]
Looking down from above
I’m intrigued by their love
[Ryuk]
So let’s call!
Hmmm, let’s call!
Anyways, A Good Omens animatic brought me here lol
Kinda lowkey mad this isnt on spotify
They made a cover
There's also kind of a podcast for it-
Anyone else think of Human by Christina Perri every time Ryuk and Rem sing, “They’re only human” because it sounds exactly like Christina’s line “I’m only human.”
???? What
Yeah, I hear it too.
Same
bro like,,,, I know I'm gay but everytime rem says "looking down from above I'm intrigued by their love" I can feel myself leveling up
This song is fantastically nihilistic. I love it.
It really feels like the two sides of death having a discussion and I think that is such a delightfully gothic idea for a song
those ending vocals from rem are amazing
Rem's voice is literally the only reason for me to live
i like how their perspectives are totally different but they still have the same end thought
I can’t stop imagining Crowley and Aziraphale in my head while listening to this
Thank you amigo

Same
this needs more attention
I love how they both say “they’re only human” as if to make it into a double meaning. Incredible poetry.
I can very easily see this being a waltz between the two of them. *Writes down choreography*
I love how you can hear Rem go from "isnt it a shame" "isnt it a waste" to "I'm intrigued by their love" as she develops an interest in Misa
The Good Omens Animatic brought me here and I've never been so happy!
What is UP with this good Omens animate and WHY is it fiddeling with my BFFs and Is idea of an angel of hell and heaven living together ??
@@thelunarghost It is an angel and a demon who have kind of worked out an Arrangement to help each other from time to time. The apocalypse is days away and they stumble through trying to stop the end of the world.
"Dommed to live pushing boulders uphill" is such a clever line
1:33
Other characters that I can see singing this......
1) Monsieur and Madame Thenardier (Les Miserables)
2) Joker and Harley Quinn (Batman)
3) Mr Compress and Toga (MHA)
4) Dio and Mariah (JJBA)
5) Sweeny Todd and Mrs. Lovett (Sweeny Todd: the Demon of Fleet Street)
6) Hawkmoth and Natalie (Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir)
7) Alastor and Charlie (Hazbin Hotel)
This song does have "A Little Priest" vibes.
And def hades and Persephone
I would like to propose the idea of traitor au jiro and denki singing this
@@Stellerstatic_idol That would be amazing somebody make an animation
WalkingTrashCan an animation or a cmv would be amazing
So awesome! Thank you so very much for putting together this playlist. Let's hope they finally do this musical here in the States!
Jeff Anderson call it America and not “the states” that just sounds weird
Hamivel
The State
They could have said something worse lol just think
@Jeff Anderson
oMg Your name looks like my teachers and I freaked
Thank you for making this playlist oh my g o d
Why is this so good?????? I was expecting it to be OKAY but this is really really good!!
Sonja Ippolito same here i'm still shook
that key change was ✨juicy✨
making scenarios in my head with this>>>
This musical needs so much more hype for real
Ikr
1:34 "One must imagine Sisyphus happy."
i will personally go door to door petitioning for Death Note the Musical to get a revival
God this is such a good song. Helped me came up with two new villains for my dnd game. A pair of gods who are the embodiments of stagnation and change and have have grown bored and the two dance through a city of humans and come up with a plan to rid them of their boredom
Let me just say- I've never had an ad on this video and I'll forever appreciate that
@Hadley McCulley half the time me too
Honestly they missed out on a great opportunity to have a reprise of this song.
ANIME SPOILERS
That'd be great for the anime scene where he kills the Yotsuba executives, Aiber and Wendy. But I like the Musical ending.
i’m so glad the voice actor for rem sounds much more feminine compared to the anime. rem and misa are my fav unrequited love lesbian pair
The "looking down from above, iam intrigued by their love" is just so powerful, i didn't know a line in a song can be given so much emotion
this is such a BOP
Imagine Waltzing to this. I do it every time I listen.
Why do I just see Rem and Ryuk dancing the tango while singing this? It just has that feel.
They NEED to make a Broadway English version. The music is SO good I swear-
For some reason, this reminds me of a Terry Pratchett quote: "Thunder rolled…
It is said that the gods play games with the lives of men. But what games, and why, and the identities of the actual pawns, and what the game is, and what the rules are-who knows? Best not to speculate. Thunder rolled… It rolled a six."
I'm currently reading the manga series and only just realized there was a whole musical and everything to it . Like wow
And believe it or not, the musical actually improved upon aspects of the manga. For example, Misa's character. Now, that's how you do an adaptation.
I bet they sell Apples at the concession stands at the Theatre
Actually In the death note anime heaven does exist So living a good life does have a reward in life.
This fact goes to show that people who use the death note end up as gods of death with no memories of their past.
Well maybe Light remebers a little and uses Ryuk to fill in the blanks. Since he did seek him out to hear the story.
true
Well... that's not cofirmed but ok
@@thenarnutdonut1373 ya but I like to thing that's the reason a death god would seek out the story and know about Ryuk's Apple addiction
@@soulishere3869 Omigod, what if Ryuk vaped or something and it was apple flavored and thats why he like apples so much?
I love how you can tell that Rem is kind of fascinated with the humans but Ryuk sees them as the Shinigami equivalent to trashy reality TV, and thinks Rem is on his side.
never seen death note, and don't particularly care for anime, but my sister sent me this (bc i'm theater person) and it is a BOP
only wish it was on spotify smh
A theater person who hasn't seen death note, now that's new
It's like Beetlejuice and the Wicked Witch of the West
I just wish I had her vocal range so I can sing this while dressed in a goth aesthetic outfit
This song gives me huge 2 gods dancing and singing together while looking down at the humans vibes
honestly the harmonies in the song are EVERYTHING
I have listened to this on repeat so many times.
Rose Kitty same 😂
Same
As have I.
Dayum...where did Rem get that high pitched voice.
It’s her singing voice! She still sounds horrible when she’s not singing
Rem is the character this musical too the most liberties with.
I’m not complaining cus an adaptation require changes and the changes to Rems character seem to make sense.
This song gives me major carnival vibes
"Never knowing that truth is another man's lie" made me shudder, I love this song and I only discovered it 6 minutes ago
Sweeney Todd meets JandH omg great!
Lesley Plowman I was seriously just thinking that this sounds a lot like A Little Priest!!!
Utsuho Reiuji isn't it a waste.
Iris Underhill Seems a downright shame!
Anyone else here cos of Sam Fennahs animation test?
I never understood why they were happy about the years given to them by the human, arent they "eternally bored" it sounds that at the end of the day they have a pretty miserable existence
"Living every day... 'till the day they die..."
Yeah that's how it works Ryuk
Ryuk: let’s call.. let’s call...
My dumbass: 911 what’s your emergency
This musical is so good I'm have a heart attack help
