It was filmed on Monday 8 May 1978, in The Columbia Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles and broadcast on Wednesday 17 May 1978 (ABC), USA and it was released on a laser disc in the USA in 1978. ABBA were special guests, along with Andy Gibb, on Olivia Newton-John's TV special. This was during "ABBA Month" in the USA. The songs performed LIVE:- 'Remember The Days Of The Old School Yard' (with Olivia and Andy Gibb) 'If You Love Me' (backing Olivia)'' Dancing Queen' 'Fernando' (edit) 'I Just Wanna Be Your Everything' (backing Andy Gibb) 'Have You Never Been Mellow?' (you don't SEE ABBA on this clip) Please Mr Please (backing Olivia) 'Take A Chance On Me' LIVE 'Shadow Dancing' (dancing along to Andy Gibb (not singing)) Hopelessly Devoted To You (Olivia) If You Love Me (all together)
This ONJ special was highly anticipated and didn't disappoint when aired. Andy's voice was so underrated back then (some feel his was the purest of all the brothers), and ABBA gave an outstanding effort too. As for ONJ, that woman NEVER disappoints, just an amazing talent. Really enjoyed this first-ever "Sing-Along-With-Empress"!

Yes, I was singing along too! So much talent sharing the stage! I remember loving this when it aired on TV. ONJ personally invited ABBA and this was their first prime time TV appearance in the US. I believe they were all good friends too.

It is known that this was only one of the options that was later used for the official screening after the montage-editing process.It's a precious raw document.Decades later a crew member gave this to publicity...God bless him.They were all enjoying their atmoshere.Such a pure fun.HNY girl!

I love this review of such an iconic TV special. Might I suggest you check out Olivia's Hollywood Nights special from 1980. When I was a kid, my life revolved around two things Olivia Newton-John (who was the biggest star in the world at the time) & ABBA. When this show aired in the UK, my parents got me out of bed on a school night & sat me down on the sofa. I thought I was in trouble for something but then my dad came in with Coke & biscuits for me & my mum said ''there's something coming on TV for you''. The show started & Olivia's name scrolled across the screen. I was so excited & then it said ABBA were special guests on it & I was even more excited, it's a very happy memory, especially as my mum isn't here anymore. Over the years i've been lucky enough to meet & chat to Olivia in different settings & she is just as lovely as she comes across on screen. They always say never meet your idols but for me that wasn't the case. She was everything & more I could have ever hoped for, not to mention, even more stunning in person - her eye's are so sparkley the're like sapphires.

I was in awe watching all my favorite performers singing their hits and singing with each other! Back then, it was the highlight of the year as far as tv specials.❤️
Aww you did watch it! this is the TV special i told you about in the "have you never been mellow" reaction and we thought you haven't watched it, i guess i didn't explain myself well, this is the one!. ABBA going their separate ways, Olivia still looking kinda like this but with 80's hair in her "Physical" era, and Andy's tragic passing at such a young are all part of my childhood memories. I turned 43 this year, these beautiful talented people have been with me literally my whole life through their music and also movies in Olivia's case. It does make me happy that thanks to younger people like you their legacy lives on, great job on this video! 👍💖

Thanks for a great reaction. So glad this was preserved and not just tossed out. I remember when this aired. Was a big deal and promoted as such. We weren't disappointed and it still holds up. Stay safe and have a Happy New Year.

Right before Grease came out… months before. This is actually b roll stuff from rehearsals for the special.
This was the actual footage shot for the TV special a few days before it aired, according to the "sound engineer?" who obtained the Stereo feed and uploaded to youtube. There may have been other cameras, but this was the actual shoot for the TV special, which aired about one month before the release of "Grease".😀

@@michaeldubin8965 Just to clarify, as someone else posted, this is the raw footage for the TV special. It was later edited for the show. "Thank You for the Music" for instance, was used with the closing credits.😀

Andy Gibb, the youngest of the Bee Gees brothers, also sang very well and was very successful.
This was an special TV at US (in May 1978) of Olivia Newton John, with Andy Gibb and ABBA as guest stars.
They all had their songs on the US Billboard charts:
Olivia with those from the movie Grease (with John Travolta)
ABBA reached #3 with
"Take a chance on me"
and Andy Gibb reached #1 with
"Shadow dancing"
The last chorus that all six together performing is a hymn of ABBA:
"Thank you for the music"

This aired in May 1978, about one month before "Grease" was released. This was the first performance of "Hopelessly Devoted to You". At this point, I don't know how many people actually knew it was from "Grease". Also, to note, ONJ already knew that she was taking her career in a different direction. She chose her guests for this TV special and it was not any C&W or Adult contemporary artists. Also, I think on this special she was straddling her old image (as expected from the TV execs) and her new image (note what she is wearing for this performance - a long dress but it is sheer and has a long slit and she is wearing white spandex pants underneath). Also, did you hear ONJ singing the high harmonies on the ABBA songs "Fernando" and "Thank You for the Music"? In any case, I just enjoyed watching you sing along to this great medley between these very talented artists!💗

Olivia is taking over, a bit sad, when you have to of the best pop singers like Frida and Agneta there.
It was Olivia's show. Abba was one of her guests. In fact, this was Abba's first US prime time appearance thanks to ONJ. That means ONJ was responsible for the content, plus it was her star power in the US that made this show possible. She was the one entrusted by the Network for this show. It was her responsibility for the content, the success and reputation. It was a ratings smash. Plus guest stars were very respectful of the hosts back then. They knew who the network put their money on and respected that. ONJ was a guest star on many, many other artists' shows and she always made sure they were front and center. That is what great guest stars do. And I consider all of these artists just as talented. Actually, I put ONJ right up there as one of the best all-time pop singers!
