Dean Blunt - Black Metal ALBUM REVIEW

  • Listen: • Dean Blunt - '50 Cent'
UK singer-songwriter and musical oddball Dean Blunt releases an album that's difficult to put into words. While simple in composition and sloppy in execution, the album still manages to draw up some real feelings of isolation, melancholy, and frustration.

i think the black cover art fits this album perfectly. i guess im imagining all of the songs being performed in pitch black darkness, and it's cool.

Funnily enough I saw Dean play not too long ago and he did play quite a few songs in pitch black darkness. He then turned on a strobe and began destroying some subwoofers
It was both the most boring and most mind blowing concert I've been to

I just love seeing Dean Blunt's cool taste in music (specifically in a lot of UK post-punk and dub) appear in his songs with his sampling. '100' samples a song by The Pastels which is only 30 seconds long and he turns it into this great jangle-pop ballad, Babyfather's 'Snakeman Freestyle' samples a song by Marine Girls called 'He Got The Girl' and plays with the themes of betrayal and naivity in a relationship, and in 'A_X' he interpolates lyrics from 'Love Like Anthrax' by Gang of Four. No one else is doing it like him, adore his music :')

Great review! I never considered a comparison to Silver Jews or Smog but it makes a lot of sense in terms of approach. Its so easy to get caught up in the crossed cultural references of Dean Blunt's work that sometimes you miss what it is in essence. Maybe my favourite album of 2014! Cheers, a new subscriber.

Hey Blackthony Metalbro, I was wondering what your overall thoughts on amateurish music and musical artists were. I know you like your Tonetas and your Daniel Johnstons and whatnot but both of them have gathered huge followings mostly cause of their outsider approach to making music but what are your thoughts on just everyday normal amateur artists? like do you ever just listen to random bands on bandcamp with little followings? like just everyday people making everyday music. I ask you mostly because I tend to find this kinds of artists very interesting, not everything i find I'd label as "good" but there's usually something that catches my attention in terms of ingenuity, realness and just overall amateurish delivery. Tell me what you think i love u baba.

Dean Blunt was kind of culturally appropriating white music and its awesome what sounds and songs came as a result. Someone mentioned Death in June, and I'll also add to having a Durutti Column sound at times. Brilliant record and it felt like an album and aesthetic like this will not be fully appreciated, but one day I hope. Its been nearly three years and its still too mysterious, but we have had an album such as Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition which thematically and introspectively takes some themes from Joy Division.
