I have been trying to learn the structure and planes of the face and actually seeing the process is so helpful. Cuz sometimes I just don't know where to start lol
Thank you so much for this video! Not only for showing the process, but more importantly for giving me a huge general insight on how I should continue to approach and develop my own - the phrase "a proccess-oriented approach allows you to make mistakes and then correct them" [paraphrased] unlocked an understanding I didn't even know I had in my mind.
This is an excellent tutorial on the general differences between the male and female skull but in my own process I am much more interested in a likeness as a means to convey a real sense of character. To me the important part of what he was saying came in the last minute or so.
I'm trying to understand head construction as much as possible... I really want to get better at portraits. What I really need though is to learn how to properly place facial features
Man, just divide face in 3 parts: Hair line to brows, brows to tip of the nose, tip of the nose to tip of the chin. Or simple: hair line to tip of the nose Tip of the nose to tip of the chin Eyes tipically placed where the nose starts, mounth between tip of the nose and tip of the chin 😊

I mean no disrespect with this comment, but I'm confused, his drawing on Audrey Hepburn doesn't look like her, was it supposed to be a generic drawing of a woman with her image as reference, or was it supposed to be a drawing of her?
There's been some confusion about this and we understand it. The examples shown were picked to show to widely agreed upon examples of masculine and feminine features, not to be a lesson on likeness. It could have been stated more clearly. Early on in each drawing, you can see him make changes to push things a bit more in their respective directions like changing both jawlines to emphasize certain characteristics. There is mention of some likeness that he wants to keep but that were just some small choices here and there.

Absolutely untrue. You can do all these things to study and stop here or use them as the basis of a piece that you'll. Then spend hours and hours rendering. You put time into art to get faster at it later or for the things that just take time. There's nothing saying you have to make something in 10 minutes to be a good artist.
Looks nothing like her. #1 she has a very square jaw (which is beautiful btw). #2 Her lips are thin and mouth petite. Not the huge mouth with lip filler you drew. #3 her eye sockets are rounder not almond shaped. Those are the big basics that were missed.
Definitely! While he mentions making some changes for likeness, he wasn't going for doing a perfect portrait but using her as an example of well-known and fairly agreed upon feminine traits. Audrey has a pretty boxy/hard jawline that doesn't quite play directly into that and you see him diverge from that for the purpose of the lesson very early on in the demo. You can see him make some changes to Khali's face as he works through it as well with the sharper jaw and cheekbones though that big ol' chin makes it read as more immediately him because who has that chin?? We have some other videos on likeness on the channel if you do want that, though. No matter what, it's about capturing the impression of that person, not sticking fully to a reference. Totally understand. Sorry to disappoint here. It's more of a lecture on shifting the generic head construction around. Nothing in the lecture is addressing likeness or concepts of beauty.
