- I spend a lot of money to customize the best BFS reel ever and I may have ruined it lol

I have two words for you. Paper towels. Any time working on something with tiny parts put down paper towels or a very thin towel so when you drop parts and or springs they dont bounce and roll around they stay right there. This will save you time and money especially when you get older and lose you close up sight like myself and have to wear grandpa glasses. lol
Did any of that improve the reel performance? Wouldve been nice had you been able to record a before and after field testing to see how much better or worse the aftermarket parts made.

Yeah I learned at very very early age tinkering & fixing thangs isn't a skill set of mine. Plus I lack patients once one pice doesn't fit for me I get mad as say to hell with it. Another great video bro

If you change out parts around carpet a magnetized parts bowl will your best friend. If you drop a small screw run the magnet part through the carpet and you will find it again.
Don't understand why anyone would modify that reel I could see Lazer engraving but that reel already has top shelf performance and by far not ugly but just my opinion .
Haha bro I was doing some cleaning and the mag brakes bar on curado bfs has tiny spring under the disc I took it out and it shot to the magnets thought it went on the floor and looked around for ten min before I saw it it’s just so small bout freaked out lmao such a nerve wrecking process 😂😂
I would definitely do a brake dial mod but also have added a vinyl skin to my Aldebaran. I’ve noticed that my particular reel scratches and chips quite easily. I wonder if that’s because of the magnesium frame and possible issues with paint adhesion 🤔🤷♂️. Other than that, I did get the KKR spool, which for the money, is actually quite nice and seems to cast more consistently and accurately than the stock spool. The only other modification that I have really enjoyed is the worm gear bearing upgrade. It’s made the handle rotation feel so much smoother and freer than before. In any case nice mods and cheers!
I got the ported KKR spool on the way and also have the Metanium KKR spool. A big BFS spool video seems to be in order
@@THEREELTEST I have the non ported version but 2.8g seems kind of bonkers haha. Not sure that the KKR alde spool is a massive improvement but I think it casts very consistently for me. 1g lures cast well with it. I really wish they had designed the spool to allow the stock bearings to be used. The ones they provide with the spool aren’t the best quality imho… look forward to your spool video!
Those skinny metal knobs always look to me like the rubber fell off, i.e. something went missing. 😄
I used to think these small thin metal knobs would be uncomfortable but for bfs and trying to feel a trout magnet at the end of the line they are actually better than the stock knobs
alot of the after market parts for shimano reels are garbage unfortunately, overpriced cheap aluminum crap which also happens to be extremely overpriced. more often than not, your reel will perform worse than bone stock.

I've been looking for brass colors for mine ... I can't find the retainer and screw but I'm also going lighter on the knobs I think, with a bronze flake epoxy that a friend of mine turned for me.

Thats a sweet looking rig. Love the jdm accessories from hedgehog. I'm a big fan of the thumb bar for my metanium. I'm considering switching spools out on one of em to something lighter for throwing micro jigs. How wild do the metaniums get with a lighter spool, if you have experience with them? I'm assuming they get squirrely pretty quick.

May I ask where can you find a spool tension knob for Shimano reels? Looking to change some on my curados. Not a fan of the gold.
I have the kkr spool and I can cast just under half a gram between 13 and 15 yards. I've only had it on the water once so I'm still testing it out. It will be nice to watch your video on it.

What websites do you use for your parts and reels?
Will the avail LT handle work for the 22 Calcutta bfs? And will the stock knobs on the aldebaran fit the avail LT handle?
Do you know of any Lews Custom Lite spool replacements? I’m looking to upgrade or change out the spool on My Custom Lite.
You may actually feel more with all metal knobs...so it should be more sensitive which will make a better finesse set up..just my thoughts..looks awesome by the way..

I myself would not do something like that, but this video is about the fact that if someone wants to do something like this or something similar, it is possible.
I highly recommend you swap out the thumb bar with a KDW one (might be difficult to get) but feels way better than the stock plastic one.

Perhaps when you have the lowest inertia spool on your Aldebaran you could try a fly. Being from Montana I have done a fair amount of fly fishing. I think a #8 olive and black woolly bugger will do well for trout and probably for bass. It imitates a leach, bait fish, and longer insect larva. I caught a rainbow over 6 pounds with an olive & black woolly bugger. (That is an olive chenille body palmered with a black hackle and a black Marabou tail.)
I tied them both weighted and unweighted.
Jim a fly is not gonna cast with inertia.
Does the avail spool really make any difference on the 22 model? it does make a big difference on the 2016 version.

Can someone fill me in on the benefits of metal knobs? You see them on customized reels a lot but honestly…I can’t see how they’d be anything but awkward in hand and cold to the touch.
Also, I could never do this to one of my reels for the simple fact that with my luck, the first cast would get blown straight into a tree with people watching.
FYI, I just got a Favorite Soleus reel and holy cow are their nobs FANTASTIC!!! I mean the entire reel is superbly smooth, on par with the best of the best which I was surprised to learn because I wasn't expecting that at all!
Their self adjusting Centrifugal braking system REALLY impressed me! Screw overpriced reels!!!

The last Aldebaran was in 2016. And yes the 22 beats it hands down.
its casting feel is on another level vs any reel out there including the 16 Aldebaran

1/200th of an ounce plus the plastic. I don't think they will ever make a casting reel that casts that. That would be awesome, I'd get one for sure.

I've watched that video. You can easily cast it with a float. I was talking about casting it without a float. I can cast the mini magnet on BFS when I donkey rig it with a small bead. That's 2 magnets plus the small bead and a bobber stopper, so its close to a gram

There are Japanese stores that can do engravings and designs. I forgot their websites though
I have seen reals that were painted that looked really nice and I've also seen some that weren't done so well you have to strip the real down completely I think the trip report is finding the right paint in the right person to lay it down
Your best bet is to use a 2-part epoxy resin based paint like PPG prime but it's VERY expensive and then you want to have the proper airbrush and compressor in order to apply it properly so the result is a professional looking finish.
The biggest plus side is that it is ultra-durable and is highly scratch resistant, but besides the paint you need to buy all the pre-prep stuff too so as to ensure maximum adhesion to the surface, which you will have to sand down/scuff a bit for the paint to BITE onto as best as possible.
I would simply soak it in lacquer thinner to remove every last bit of paint/finish off the metal part(s) of the frame, but with the side plates you need to be careful because lacquer thinner can literally dissolve some plastics, so pay attention to what's what before you decide to just go buck wild. Use your head and you will end up with a great looking custom finish.
As for the graphics, I would suggest you download PDF files that contain all the logos and tidbits you want to have in the finished product and have a decal company plot them out and after you install them you clear coat over the entire thing to seal them in and ensure they never lift/peel.
Ive seen custom painted reels but I dont know anyone who does it though.

Alot of the Shimano smoothness is from their knob material and thickness of that material. You feel smoothness in your fingertips, and your fingertips are touching the knobs
