Glad to see so many reasonably priced reel opinions these days. BFS is slowly getting a foothold since Covid first struck. More people fishing and increased fishing pressure created a valuable niche for BFS here in the US.
It's good to hear someone acknowledging Amazon's Bait Finesse System capabilities. I don't think a lot of people know that amazon has a Japan site/warehouse. I've gotten a lot of JDM tackle from there and haven't been disappointed yet. Anyway. Keep up the good work, awesome contact.
I knew some were available, but I was shocked that MOST of the reels on this list are now on Amazon, and several at competitive prices better than many Japanese shops. Love to see that progress!
I’ve personally never used a BFS but it’s great to see someone so passionate about this whole sector of fishing. I still need to figure out how they even work when compared to a typical casting reel
They work like a regular casting reel, just an ultralight version with typically shallower spools and lower line capacity. They make it possible to cast pretty much everythign you would typically use a spinning rod for on a baitcaster. And in my opinion, they are easier to get used to than traditional BCs. They just make every fish you catch a fun expereince.
Been loving ur vids leading up to getting my first BFS, I'm a big Daiwa fan so initially I was looking at the Gekkabijin but you've definitely given me some food for thought.
Your channel has helped me identify the right gear for me. I went with the Soloking Acura as I want to remain on the lower end of the budget. Congratulations on all your success.
Aaron i have watched your videos and taken your advice, and you are not wrong i bought the Tsurinoya Dark Wolf Ultra BFS reel and paired with the Tsurinoya Elf UK Special rod and I bought the Shimano SLX BFS reel and paired that with the Tsurinoya dexterity rod, both good reels i bought them from listening and watching your channel thank you for unbiased reviews of these reels, keep it up Aaron i look forward to more videos in the future.
Much appreciated. I try to stay neutral. It's why even though I have my Kistler line of rods, I'll keep trying other brands as well. And if I don't like a product, I try not to truly trash it - just share the potential negatives against what positives I find.
Hello I appreciate the time you have put into this walkthrough on each reel . I’m using this as a guide to building my first BFS combo . I will 100% come back and let you know my thoughts on which reel I decide on getting and how I feel it worded for me. Happy New Year and new Adventures in 2024 Bryan
Soloking Acura is good...I paid 60.00 with only shallow spool should've waited for 35.00...going to get me another just for the extra spool but this time the 8 2 1 version thanks for sharing enjoy your bfs content keep up the good work!
Thanks - We can always wait and hope for a killer deal - but a few reels I mentioned have been going UP in price, so you never know! But it's almost a no-brainer at the current prices if you need a back-up BFS reel.
Yes the price fluctuate alot...as of right now I have the Bearking zeus haven't test it but feels smooth as the Acura...feels and looks as good as the Acura going to try to throw 1 gram with that to see if it can handle it...also got the Tendershoot and the arise air so far the cdm market feels good and the price is just right! Working my way up to some Diawa set up...and the high end shimano calcutta conquest conquest bfs and aldebaran! I have the old ones they perform great! Until then building some saltwater cdm set up to see how it hold up in saltwater condition!
I just purchased the doviello hiccu-50 136gm reel, I'm new to the BFS scene and I didn't want to put alot of money in it until I know I like it. Thanks for your video's they are very informative, and educational!
Such a great way to test the waters in BFS. But it's also a great reel - defintiely king of the budget reels right now. It was arguably the best under $100 for the last 2 years. Enjoy!
Just ordered mine through Aliexpress, gonna pair it with a Handing Miracle that just came yesterday. I put an SLX 70 MGL on it just to see how the balance point was. Just a tad forward of the reel lock nut. So the lighter Acura should balance perfectly. Was tempted to spent double on the Acura via Amazon and get it in 2 days, but the $32 first-time buyer price on Aliexpress was too tough to skip. And it’ll be here around 2/18 so that’s not too shabby (2 days before my birthday 🎂)
@@DavidBronstein1961 Very cool. Tomorrow's video is about the rod you ordered! :P And hopefully in 2 weeks I'll have my "Birthday Trout" video - we have similar birthdays. :) Thanks for being an active watcher and commenter. means a lot.
Love all your content! Currently still trying to figure out a DarkWolf Ultra before I step to far into this BFS world. Your info provided in your videos has helped greatly.
Thanks for putting this video together. I just started BFS fishing with the DWU. I'll have to check out that Soloking and some reels in the $100 range.
Great presentation! Really encouraging you kids. I goota' say that I'm "lucky)" ( yeah, BFS is as addictive as it is fun) to have 90% of the reels you had on this video. I'm afraid the equipment growth is still growing!
I have a Daiwa Salamandura SV 70 Air TW & absolutely love it. I have since converted 3 Tatula SV 70'S into BFS reels by swapping out spools, changing over to Roro Air BFS bearings & adding an aftermarket click drag kits.
Great informative video. Glad to see the Amazon links! For the money the Slx series of reels,in general, are amazing for the buck. So much has improved and become available! We are just getting started with BFS and where it’s going to take us
Glad you appreciated them - i was actually surprised how many BFS reels can be found on Amazon now - and some of them cheaper than from overseas! Yeah - BFS is defintiely catching on, that's for sure!
Hey man. Just wanted to say thank you for the content you put out. I've known about bfs for a year or two now and have been curious but, I only just started to really dive down the rabbit hole in the last few days. I downloaded aliexpress and was overwhelmed by all the options so I figured I'd get to RUclips this morning to see if someone had any reviews on some pf the rods and reels available to help me narrow down my options and pick out a few to get me started. Long story short I stumbled onto your channel and found your videos very helpful helpful. So again thank you. Hopefully I'll have a new combo or two that I'll enjoy fishing with when my lakes thaw out. Until then I'll keep watching and learning as much as possible.
I just saw this today September 25th 2024 and I have to say create information on this video excellent walking it through your personal experience and learned advice I very much appreciate it!
I am really glad you mentioned my favorite BFS reel. The Diawa Gekkibijin is the best that I own. Now I am just trying to find some decent rods for the type of fishing that I do. I am a guy that is trying to bring BFS to the Crappie world where I live at. I’ve always liked casting gear, and now that I have something that can cast a 1/16 oz jig or a 1/32 oz popeye it’s time for me to see what all I can do with it. Thanks for the video.
@@rougaroux2359 Didn't know it wasn't available - that was the one I had. Was pretty good most of the time - didn't handle really large fish well. Like 30"+ fish.... or giant trout / smallmouth.
Great video. Lots of useful information. After watching I think I will pick up a Shimano Curado. I like that you mentioned it feels solid and can handle slightly heavier lures. Thanks for the video Aaron.
Completely understand. That's why there are a few good reels potentially not on the list - I don;t have enough expeirnce with them to form a unique opinion. :P
Your videos are my goto for bfs. Thanks for the info. You may have convinced me into looking into the gekkabijin in addition to the calcutta and aldebaran.
Great review and great line up of BFS reels. I currently own the Shimano BFS and Aldebaran BFS and am looking for one more but can’t decide on expensive or middle of the road. You’ve shown us some good choices in all categories. I do like the Calcutta.
It seems like not too long ago the choices were pretty straight forward. Today we do have a wealth of chocies - most of them can be made without regret!
Definitely agree with the choices you put in this video. I actually have a bunch of these reels on this list and love all of them but definitely need to start using them more as i tend to use a reel for a little bit then put it in my garage and use something else 😅
I definitely have my favorites. And after something sits long enough, I move it on to someone else. And it's easy to keep trying enw ones - especially with all the new budget reels that have come out recently!
Great stuff. I would love to see you do a video on rods, especially what you like to use for trout. I have really liked the Hunts series rod I got from Kistler, so good job again on that. My thoughts on reels, I like the Aldebaran and the Conquest. I have tried the Steez Air and didn't care for it. I own several Steez reels and the Air, for me, didn't come close to what Shimano has had to offer in BFS. I also have found the Silver Wolf and Millionaire CT to be a disappointment when it comes to BFS. On the other hand, the Steez CT has been great at throwing lures around 1/16oz. Thanks again.
Appreciate the comment. Glad the Kistler Hunt Series rods are working out for you. I love that I created. And they've been selling well. Might be a few more coming soon. 😉 I've started planning a blog post on rods (which might become a video), and probably in late winter / early spring, I'll do a full overview of all my set-ups. But I'll add the trout-specific idea to the list. Hadn't really considered it before. Thanks.
Paired with my 23 conquests bfs with Dobyns ultra finesse 700. I find it hard to throw 1/32oz, but easy on 1/16oz 10-15 yards. I think my pole doesn't load as well. It's rated for 1/16 to 5/16 lure
@AaronHuntFishing there's so much truth in that, most bfs fishermen don't do clips on lure weight and what type of rod better fits the type of lure weight people prefer to fish? They usually do base on the reel instead.
Your video's are great Aaron!! I actually just picked up from pre order the Ark Gravity bfs. If you get a chance give it a shot! Thanks always for great content
Soloking still number 1 for price to quality ratio for me. I got the double spool for 30 bucks last summer. I just bought the updated version with single spool for 35. For the price of a Walmart ozark trail baitcaster I can fling tiny lures quite a distance and Now I can keep a bfs set up in every car. Haha. I got the haibo arise, still playing with it but for the price I feel like there are better options. Still feels plasticy at over 100 bucks. And I switched out the handle immediately, felt terrible with the skinny knobs. The SLX bfs is definitely my favorite for power bfs. It’s solid as far as build quality. Definitely worth the price.
Thank you sir for sharing all of your knowledge and insights! I really love BFS in saltwater and I’ve not freshwater fished with BFS yet. I do own the Curado and SLX BFS reels. They are great, as I’m mostly fishing above the 4-5 gram weights. My brother and I like to Smallmouth fish on the New River here in NC, so I’m considering getting another reel for small rivers and ponds. I’m just still on the fence about which way to go. I’ve been leaning heavily towards a Daiwa, but now the Ark Gravity BFS has my attention. Thank you sir for all of the info and links to where to find these reels!
Ark Gravity is getting good reviews, and it's basically the same as the Haibo Arise Air - made int the same factory. I don't think you can go wrong with that choice.
Probably a great choice to start with. I still think it might be the best overall value in BFS reels. It's the cheapest reel I own that always gets in the rotation. It's one of those reels that just does the work without being flashy and never takes your mind off of the fish.
Very good breakdown! Shimano may have coined the term BfS but Daiwa has been doing it way longer. I have a few including an Abu LTZ , Pixy , Alphas. Light spools and good ceramic bearings are your friend.
I absolutely love the soloking Acura with 10 braid it cast amazing I just got the Bearking Zeus and it also cast like the Acura with same braid so 2 solid choices you can’t go wrong I just order the valiant eagle so will see about it rod is jenko double down
Not really. There were enough quality problems with it for me not to include it yet. It was a coin toss between it and the CQ BFS when I bought it - so far glad I bought the CQ! But I'm not ready to say the SS Air is bad. Just can't put it in the top tier at that price. Maybe the 2025 list it shows up? :)
@@AaronHuntFishing What issues are you having? Mine's been flawless. The only issue I'm aware of was the weak magnet holder, and that was only in a few of the early lots and was recalled. Daiwa will send you a free replacement magnet holder if you're reel is one of the affected.
@@SBD36 I think that was the main one - like I said heard some early issues, so I'm just in a holding pattern while I try some other options. So many reels, so little time...
Can not remember if you’ve tried the slx dc xt? To jump into BFS I picked up an Alderbaran 22 and an Slx dc xt for the wife. She hasn’t used a baitcaster before so trying to keep the learning curve lower for her.
So many good reels available to us, more than ever before but I have to go with the 23 Conquest for what’s currently available. As for my favorite the 17 Conquest BFS is it.
@AaronHuntFishing the 23 is a little smaller, especially narrower but I like the feel of the 17 a little better and the wider spool area helps when you get a backlash. Both awesome and I'm nitpicking here of course.
Solid review bud. I hope you are having a great year so far. Over here in Nebraska all of my lakes and ponds are frozen. I hope you get to catch a giant bass here soon, tight lines. 🤙🎣💪🇺🇸 33:01
Great info. Been waiting to buy a BFS… would luv to have the salamandura… but I gotta stay in that budget area for now. Most likely stick with an Acura with the bearing upgrade… or the reliable dark wolf ultra… still kinda debating
It’s so nice living here in Japan. Knowing that I can go to any of the plethora of local fish stores here and buy them for two thirds of what Is pay if I was in the US. 😂 (primarily due to the current favorable exchange rate) I fish in the extremely dense streams in the mountains here, so smooth and accurate trumps distance. I’ve had my eye on the Cormorant for a few weeks now
Smooth and accurate - what do you fish that you find better than the Silver Creek for that application? And as far as living in Japan, I'd probably be more excited about the lure availability! :P Unfortunately I didn't go fishing there, but my two favorite memories were eating at Sushi Daiwa and the whole fish market experience, and "Beautiful Mount Fuji" as everyone seemed to call it. :)
You need to include ARK Gravity BFS reel. It really is a great competitor in bfs reels with Varivas PE 8 braid .8 Go lb with a BENKEI rod 6’7” light rod. Been my main combo and getting everything:bluegill, crappie, LargeMouth Bass ❤
I don't "need" to. I already own 20+ reels. The confusion around the ARK launch last summer and the issues with Haibo anmd such basically turned me off. I agree it's avery good reel though. It may eventually end up in my hands.
my favorite are Shimano Aldebaran BFS and Calcutta Conquest BFS; hand and hand can't decide which one is better than the others, but i do only a few Daiwa you mention as well
I’m not a river fisherman; want to get a bfs reel for small ponds and lakes with pressured LMB. So I am leaning forwards the SLX BFS, lower speed. Would that be your #1 choice for that application?
Just keep in mind the 2 gram limit - which is about 1/16 ounce. As long as you're throwing 1/8 ounce or higher total weight - it's a fine option. My #1 choice would probably be the Aldebaran - handles fluror mono well and casts probably a bit further than the SLX. But it's lowest gear ration is 7.8 vs the 6.3 for the SLX. I'd say the Acura would be a great budget option as well. But the SLX BFS has never left me disappointed. It's one of the few lower gear ratio BFS options available.
Accura for trout... Probably the Obsession Trout Sensation s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DDBxt2F or the Mavllos Delicacy s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DdZaiF9 for budget rods. Or the Ace Hawk CU Double - should also LOOK great on that rod. s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DnNyW1L. If you're spending a little more, check out some of the Tsurinoya offerings, like the Dragon s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DCAjeSV And if you want a lightwieght "flick" style rod, there's always my favorite budget rod: The Lemoren Windshadow: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_AT85GR
Out of your list I’d have to say that my favorites would be a tie between the Gekkabijin and the Conquest. I love them both, but for different reasons. I think my current all around favorite BFS reel though has to be the new Daiwa SS Air.
The aldebaran bfs has been my go to for a good while. With my more conventional setups I've really gravitated to Diawa's reels and would love to check out some of their offering for bfs next season I've been looking at the Alphas SV TW 800 for a more power bfs set up.
I would probably settle down to Shimano Aldebaran BFS 2016-2021 model. I recently lost the my setup into a lake..and I ll eventually get exactly the same no hesitation.
The Gekkabijin has the edge for me if you do mostly 8g (1/4 oz) and under. If you like to throw some "Power BFS", the Aldebaran. Or if you prefer blue over blck and red. :)
What are your thoughts on the flightfeather cormorant? It retails for $250 but I picked it up with a coupon code for only about $210 and I really love it!
Short answer - most (all?) of the Shimano's and the Gekkabijin. There's obviously others. It's not an area I think of much because there's no saltware within hours for me...
Great video! Why do you think so many BFS reels are only found in 8:1 gear ratio? I love that the SLX BFS comes in a 6:1, but I wish others would do the same. Do BFS baits just not benefit from lower gearing?
Some of it has to do with smaller spool sizes, so you need higher gear ratio to get similar inches per turn. But I think most people just like faster eels, and either assume they can reel slowly enough OR they just have much better adrenaline control than I do when the bite picks up! Rolling a paddletail swimbait or spinnerbait in any current just fast enough to feel the thump is REALLY slow on 8:1 gear ratio. I know when i was into spinning gear, I was always looking for faster gear ratios. Maybe they don't fish winter and spring often either in sub 45° water, when bass generally aren't chasing fast moving lures. This is why I bought the Tatula 80 and put an aftermarket spool in it - 6.3 gear ratio as well. I also think most of the budget market has focused on the lightest casting weight possible - which generally means trout and small species, shallow water, and more slack in the line after casting, so higher gear ratio / faster reels are also important.
I doub;t I'll ever get to try one either! For vids like this I try to stick to current production reels, but it might be fun to do an "all time best" vid.
I pretty much all the reels you mentioned except Shimano Calcutta Conquest BFS XG love to have one of those. but lost my job 3 months ago and there's no sight of getting it!!!
I have a Dobyns 701 ultra finesse with a curado bfs, haven’t used it yet but would like to purchase another reel and rod setup for spring fishing this year. Currently undecided love the info though
My expereince has been mostly positive. I think I could put together a video in the next couple weeks though. Both Aliexpress and a few JDM sites int he same video. Does that sound like clost to what you're looking for?
Thank you for this video. I've been wanting to try bfs fishing and you showed a lot of options for reels, some brands I hadn't heard of. New subscriber here. Have you tried the Kastking Zephyr bfs reel?
I haven't, but know a lot of folks that have. It's an OK reel, but in my opinion a step below the other budget options. KK also seems to have inconsistent quality in general. Appreciate the sub!
I’m new to BFS, I just want to be able to throw weightless flukes and worms with a baitcaster and minimal blowups.Which one would you recommend for that?
Have you tried the daiwa steez ct sv tw 70? I find myself looking at Daiwa a little more now.. I had picked up the Salamandura and wasn’t the biggest fan but want to try the Gekkabijin. My favorite is the Calcutta for sure! Paired with Hunt BFS rod, can’t get better than that! Also, do you have a code with Digitaka?
Haven't tried a Steez Period. Many of the CT SV 70's seem like good Power BFS options, and then if there is an aftermarket spool it might be truly BFS capable. The SS Air is also a good choice. I'm about to start playing with the Tatula TW 80. Feels weird to have all these Diawa reels as a life-long Shimano guy. But I feel like I've finally kind of figured out most of their model names. Lol. No code with Digitaka - sorry. And yes - the CQ BFS on the Hunt Series rod - I'm wondering if I'll find a better combo. ;P It's the stuff of my childhood drems for sure.
Do you ever fish with subscribers? I live in Virginia and I am trying to get into kayak fishing and bait finesse fishing. I don't know enough about BFS to have an opinion quite yet?
I have - done that a few times last year. Would be happy to meet up in WV if we can work out the time and place. I'm trying to do more "Almost Heaven" fishing trips this year. As long as you're cool maybe being in a video (but not every trip gets edited).
Mostly the drama and confusion around the launch last year, and the fact the Haibo Arise Air is the same reel for $40 less and was out several months earlier. The Ark just never made it to the buying threshold for me.
It might. I tried to buy one of the early Loongze reels, but it was all by direct messaginging, and the conversation seemed to end when they asked if I was a US citizen and I said yes.... so it probably won't show up on my channel for a while. The downside might be it's app based control. But time will tell. There's also a rumor that reel will show up under a US nameplate - and if that happens maybe I'll give it a try.
Awesome, Thanks for the Sub! I am not respoinsible for your dwindling checking account balance though. :P But seriously, I hope you have an awesome day next trip out.
I was just thinking about his today. I agree with you - I just tend to grab the Gekka first about 8-9 months out of the year because I'm throwing primarily lighter stuff.
Aaron thanks for info. I have 3 Acuras, slx, zillion with a bfs spool and tatula 80 with gomexus spool. They are tools in tool box. Dovello is my favorite I was wondering if you were going to try a Histar bfs reel?
The HiStar is not currently on my short list. Next ones up are the Purelure (already here), Same Tatula as you have in the 6 gear ratio, Haibo Arise Air. then maybe Daiwa SS Air. And I'm trying to set up something fun for a series of reel videos this spring since I have so many. :P
I just received 2 of the 3 Gnat crankbaits, Basspro had them on sale. I hope to try them this week. The 2 craw colors I ordered they are tiny but they weight 3.5g and look good.
@@MrUCL Yeah, I saw BPS and Cabelas had them. I might take a drive here soon and grab a few, among other things. I finally got a couple cranks I have success with last year - would be nice to get 1 or two more that work for me.
i just herd about BFS and it sonds really fun and i have ben looking around for a nice reel and your videos have halped a lot cant what to see who wins the give away
BFS is a blast. I've always been an avid fisherman, but BFS just makes me want to go out even when in the past I wouldn't. Winter, blazing summer hear, downpours. It's just so much fun. And I've actually caught over a dozen personal bests since switching to BFS. It's not just a small-fish technique. Appreciate the comment.
I am searching for a reel that can cast 3 to 10 grams crankbaits for perch and zander. I am wondering if the slx bfs or the curado bfs might do the job. Currently, for light applications, i'm using a kastking zephyr paired with a daiwa tatula xt 3,5-14 grams x-fast rod. It does the job, but it's not a good combination for fishing with crankbaits. Do you have any recommendations on which one of the above reels would suit the job better? Maybe reccomend a moderate action rod to pair with? Thank's in advance 😅
They're essentially the same reel. Curado has more bearings. I still kind of prefer the SLX for some reason, although both perform very well. I think the first line I had on the Curado held it back - where the SLX I bought it for a primary purpose and it has excelled at that from day one.
@@AaronHuntFishing thank you for the advice. Bonus points for the SLX bfs for beeng the same as the curado with a few small differences, nevertheless it's still a Shimano reel. It will run smooth and last a long time.
I tested the aldebaran and calcutta. I like aldebaran better because when if cold outside i cannot fish calcutta due to aluminum body. On the other hand it is magnificent and good looking reel. Cheap reels i hesitate to buy, am i missing something with those cheap reels?
I don't think so. They are a good budget option, but once you've been using the better gear you can feel the difference. They were part of my gateway to BFS, and many folks are perfectly happy with less expensive reels. I keep trying a lot of the news ones to provide comparative data to help folks make a purchasing decision.
@@AaronHuntFishingthanks for reply. At that time I was barely starting with baitcasting, trying to make my way out from spinning world and getting to baitcasters, and everybody told me to go with good known reels otherwise it will be horror to like it due to birdnests, and then my mindset was like “ok but if i spend 500$ on a reel and that is still not working for me, then a 100$ should be worse, right?” But yeah maybe i shall give a try. All the best and thank you for vids and nice content
Nice comparison…but if I can make a suggestion regarding DAIWA BFS…..instead of eyeballing the Steez Air TW (which is basically a pimped Alphas Air TW and I know you didn‘t like that one) take the SS Air TW into consideration. Why? Different, new and improved brake technology which makes casting more effortless and quite a bit less expensive than the Steez Air TW.
Fair enough. Some mixed early reviews and a recall kept the SS Air off the list for now. It wills till end up in my hands eventually for me to form my own opinion though. Probably this year. It's ineveitable... :P
@@AaronHuntFishing indeed inevitable, tackle addiction is a real problem :) As far as I‘m informed only the Chinese batch of SS AIR TW had to be recalled, but I‘m not a 100% sure…
Of course it's my signature Hunt BFS. :P before I had it on that, I was running a Yamaga Blanks BlueCurrent III. I'd also consider an Abu Garcia Eradicator, or some of the Megabass P5 Destroyer line.
AliExpress is the best place to get it for english-speaking people: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DDoHDgX The price fluctuates, ABC Spider, West Door, and a couple other shops usually have it. Check the reviews and such on the shops as I recommend in my video: ruclips.net/video/_n9XwE5bMMM/видео.html
Not sure , but I was informed that Diawa started ultra light a very long time ago with the Underspin /Underspin xd and spin cast . I’d have to agreed though… those aren’t baitcasters, so not really the same thing.
Ultralight quite possibly, but I think Shimano came up with teh BFS stuff from the history I've read. As far as what came first - bass-focused or trout-focused, that has been a bigger debate. :P
I almost pulled the trigger on that reel, but after seeing the line up of Histar they seem to have a bit of a price increase on OEM items that are sold with other names.
I almost bought a HiStar rod on the 11.11 sale, but they advertised it at $30 and raised the price to nearly $70 when the sale started. So HiStar kind of lost my trust a litle. Too many other options. Hope the reel works out well for you. And it's just not feasible for me to try every single offering - they're coming out so fast! :P
Probably the Aldebaran. Nice and light, mkaes it effortless to work the bait. fits int he hand nicely. fast retrieve to take up slack and catch up with fish after a blow up. Plus it casts pretty far. Great question.
@@Fisherman_83 Those are both around 1/8oz, 4 gram lures. I'd probably go the 3X in 6'8" unless you're fishing from a bass boat. Both the popper and jerk I sometimes like to fish tip down, and that extra 4" can make it difficult in some situations. Plus there's a little less bend in the tip. If it's a dedicated rod to those baits and techniques, a faster rod would be more ideal than a Hunt BFS, but they can handle the job just fine.
I'm not sure if you've used or heard of it, but you 100% missed the clamber remake for ~$80-100. Another idea would be the cormorant version of the ff01, more manageable paint job and its supposed to be more refined for ~$40-60 more.
Hi Mr. Hartman… Could you be a little more specific please? Are you using the reel as it came out of the box. Did you do anything to the Bearings prior to use? i.e. Clean the stock Bearings of new reel grease, upgrade the bearings for other types such as Micro or Ceramic. The one problem I am trying to avoid is, a lot of these reels come heavily greased from the manufacturer. In and of itself that is not always an issue, especially if the reel can be easily cleaned and re-lubed. Sadly as in my new Tsurinoya Dark Wolf Ultra, the bearings are almost impossible to remove and if you can get them off, they are even harder to get back on. Any input you feel inclined to share would be appreciated. Thank you Rob Hilton

Thanks. If you're a Daiwa fan, you may instantly love the Gekka. It's just slowly proven itself to me more and more.
Your channel has helped me identify the right gear for me. I went with the Soloking Acura as I want to remain on the lower end of the budget. Congratulations on all your success.
Great to hear! THAT is the main goal. Well, and to have fun fishing.
Abu 1500 was the Pioner for BFS fishing…1970s 4lb line….
BFS before BFS was coined...
Happy New Year and new Adventures in 2024

Thjanks for the comment - hope it helps you find the right reel for you. Enjoy!
@@MrEastside619Fishing BFS can be a little too much fun on the gear side! Enjoy!
The Acura has been upgraded to the Acura Pro with the short shaft, lighter spool. It's solidly the BFS budget king. Thanks for the content!
I think it also has upgraded bearings too!
Love all your content! Currently still trying to figure out a DarkWolf Ultra before I step to far into this BFS world. Your info provided in your videos has helped greatly.
Glad I could help!
Thanks for putting this video together. I just started BFS fishing with the DWU. I'll have to check out that Soloking and some reels in the $100 range.
The DWU is the reel that hooked me on BFS. great start!
Great presentation! Really encouraging you kids. I goota' say that I'm "lucky)" ( yeah, BFS is as addictive as it is fun) to have 90% of the reels you had on this video. I'm afraid the equipment growth is still growing!
Awesome. For some of us, BFS can be this wonderful rabbit hole of equipment and lures, for sure! :)
Getting super interested in this bfs thing havent pulled the trigger on anything yet but that slx looks interesting
The SLX is a great bang for the buck way to enter into BFS. Premium build, budget price.
I have a Daiwa Salamandura SV 70 Air TW & absolutely love it. I have since converted 3 Tatula SV 70'S into BFS reels by swapping out spools, changing over to Roro Air BFS bearings & adding an aftermarket click drag kits.
I'll be doing a conversion on a Tat TW 80 here real soon!
I think it would be a good idea for Daiwa to pay attention to the quickly growing popularity in Tatula conversions and release a Tatula Air.
@@xDx0xUxGx, I'm sure that Daiwa is looking to grab a chunk of that market.😉
No favorite yet, I'm new - on the learning journey now. Appreciate your videos bro.
Thanks! If I TRULY had a favorite - I'd have a bunch of that reel by now. :P
Enjoy your journey into BFS! Glad some of my vids were helpful, and I appreciate the comment.
Great video I’m definitely looking to add more bfs gear and your channel has been very helpful!
Happy to help someone go deeper down the BFS rabbit hole! :P
I just saw this today September 25th 2024 and I have to say create information on this video excellent walking it through your personal experience and learned advice I very much appreciate it!
Thanks, much appreciated! What's your favorite reel these days?
Thank you so much for making this video. Very informative. I will definitely looking into these options. Awesome. Thank you
Glad you found it helpful. Appreciate the comment.
Nice vid, gonna be buying a bfs setup on Black Friday. Mainly thinking about the Soloking Acura rn.
So hard to knock the Soloking Accura these days. It's become my benchmark for BFS reels. If it costs more, it better perform better. :)
I had the Gekka on a Jenko Double Down for quite a while. Great Crappie company in general. Appreciate the comment - and good luck!
@@AaronHuntFishing I wish that I could get my hands on the Original Double Down. That is the one bfs rod that I’ve wanted.
@@rougaroux2359 Didn't know it wasn't available - that was the one I had. Was pretty good most of the time - didn't handle really large fish well. Like 30"+ fish.... or giant trout / smallmouth.
Love the Soloking Acura variants! For the price they are fire!
Agreed - hard to complain about them overall.
Great video. Lots of useful information. After watching I think I will pick up a Shimano Curado. I like that you mentioned it feels solid and can handle slightly heavier lures. Thanks for the video Aaron.
No problem. Glad it was helpful. Shimano didn't damage the Curado reputation of durability with the BFS version IMO.
Great overview. It can be hard to make decisions with so many great options and now way to test them out.
Glad I could help - or should I say "I'm Sorry!" :)
Appreciate the kind words and support.
Great video Aaron. The 20' Alphas Air TW spool fit perfectly in the Gekkabijin. I swap them out if I want more line capacity. Works great.
Great tip! Wasn't sure they were direct swaps.
Glad I have found your channel...Just getting into BFS fishing and great information.
Welcome aboard! Feel free to ask any questions - and enjoy your BFS journey.
I've started planning a blog post on rods (which might become a video), and probably in late winter / early spring, I'll do a full overview of all my set-ups.
Sound slike the rod may be rated pretty accurately. The rod is just as important as the reel on casting lighter (or even heavier) weights.
Thanks! The Ark Gravity is basically the Haibo Arise Air - so I expect it to be a great choice.
Nice feedback. It is hard to be the Acura for pure budget value, and the SLX is a great overall value for it's price, for sure.
Thank you for sharing your experience with these lovely reels. My favorite is the Aldebaran
Appreciate the comment. I hope your summer fishing is going well!
@@AaronHuntFishing thank you sir!
Great content, appreciate the breakdown. Just getting into the BFS world and I think I am going to get the Flight Feather as my first reel.
Good choice. Definitely handles lighter weights well, and the lower weight just makes it disappear and let's you connect to the rod very well.
love the content, ive been on the fence sbout bfs. im a big ultralight fisher not sure on my first one to get leaning towards the SLX.
Agreed. Appreciate the comment.
I absolutely love the soloking Acura with 10 braid it cast amazing I just got the Bearking Zeus and it also cast like the Acura with same braid so 2 solid choices you can’t go wrong I just order the valiant eagle so will see about it rod is jenko double down
Double Down is a good rod. It's what I had my Gekkabijin paired with initially. Enjoy.
Great video! I see the 23 Daiwa ss air tw is still flying under the radar.
Yes - it needs a L or ML rods. Really functions as a "Power BFS" reel above 5 grams. I caught my first Peacock Bass on the DC XT!
Great content very well explained the differences, and as far as knowledge of the product will received
Thanks man. So many options, and I was trying to keep it as short as possible! :P
thanks for the great review of the top bfs reels i think i like the conquest as the #1 bfs reel i do like the round reels its a classic look
Yeah - it's hard to beat for sure. But it's pricey! Less than it was when it came out right now though.
Great video. I love the salamandura air, my 22 aldebaran is an amazing reel, but my favorite is the daiwa ss air.
The SS Air will end up in my hands eventually.
I love my curado bfs, I do have a solo king pro. I am looking at a conquest, wanting another bfs. Want high-end, the steez is an option.
That COnquest is hard to beat - different than the others for sure.
So many good reels available to us, more than ever before but I have to go with the 23 Conquest for what’s currently available. As for my favorite the 17 Conquest BFS is it.
I've debated picking up a 17 as well to feel the differences. it's just an amazing series of BFS reels though.
Cold temps have hit - hopefully I'll still have some trout streams open once the weather gets above freezing next week! Appreciate the comment.
Great info. Been waiting to buy a BFS… would luv to have the salamandura… but I gotta stay in that budget area for now. Most likely stick with an Acura with the bearing upgrade… or the reliable dark wolf ultra… still kinda debating
Both are about the same platform, but different brakes. both very good.
If you are going to buy a Haibo, look at the Ultra Air. I bought it and is amazing.
Good to know!
@@AaronHuntFishing i really recommend the ultra air. Would love for you to review it. I think you will like it.
It may eventually end up in my hands.
my favorite are Shimano Aldebaran BFS and Calcutta Conquest BFS; hand and hand can't decide which one is better than the others, but i do only a few Daiwa you mention as well
Both those are great reels, for sure.
Great video my friend as always great job
Thanks, appreciate the comment and the consistent support.
I'm think I'm gonna get into baitcasting. Thanks for the info!
It took my enjoyment up 2 levels man!
Like the look of the silver creek. What rod would you pair the solo king with for trout using small cranks? Thx for the info!
If you're spending a little more, check out some of the Tsurinoya offerings, like the Dragon s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DCAjeSV
And if you want a lightwieght "flick" style rod, there's always my favorite budget rod: The Lemoren Windshadow: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_AT85GR
Thank you I will start looking and let you know what I end up with.
Like subscribed and shared to a buddy!! Great video ! Shimano aldebaran looks amazing.
Thanks for the sub! ANd Appreciate the share. The Alde is an amazing reel.
Received a lot of good info out of this video
Great to hear!
Out of your list I’d have to say that my favorites would be a tie between the Gekkabijin and the Conquest. I love them both, but for different reasons. I think my current all around favorite BFS reel though has to be the new Daiwa SS Air.
Very cool. I might have to try the SS AIR eventually.
The aldebaran bfs has been my go to for a good while. With my more conventional setups I've really gravitated to Diawa's reels and would love to check out some of their offering for bfs next season I've been looking at the Alphas SV TW 800 for a more power bfs set up.
Yep, that's on my short list too! Looks like an awesome reel for power BFS and skipping applications.
I would probably settle down to Shimano Aldebaran BFS 2016-2021 model.
I recently lost the my setup into a lake..and I ll eventually get exactly the same no hesitation.
Sorry to hear about your loss - but hard to be the Alde as a go-to!
Hi Aron. Which reel You prefer better...Daiwa Gekkabijin or Shimano Aldebaran 2022 BFS?
The Gekkabijin has the edge for me if you do mostly 8g (1/4 oz) and under. If you like to throw some "Power BFS", the Aldebaran. Or if you prefer blue over blck and red. :)
you should give the Haibo Arise Air, it's a very great reel, i owned one and amaze by the performance
I'll have it soon...
What are your thoughts on the flightfeather cormorant? It retails for $250 but I picked it up with a coupon code for only about $210 and I really love it!
It's essentially an upgraded flight feather - and at $210 I think it's a good deal.
I'm a saltwater angler so I am interested in what can be used/not used in sea water. Thanks for the content!
Short answer - most (all?) of the Shimano's and the Gekkabijin. There's obviously others. It's not an area I think of much because there's no saltware within hours for me...
@@AaronHuntFishingThanks and good to know! Appreciate the links to the baits as well. Found some snook stuff for sure!
@@AaronHuntFishing This makes perfect sense, thank you for your insight. I'm going to go check out your video on the Tatula 80 conversion :)
For the Moneys no object bfs reel I’d like the Shimano Cardiff 50s DC
I doub;t I'll ever get to try one either! For vids like this I try to stick to current production reels, but it might be fun to do an "all time best" vid.
I pretty much all the reels you mentioned except Shimano Calcutta Conquest BFS XG love to have one of those. but lost my job 3 months ago and there's no sight of getting it!!!
You got plenty of reels to catch fish while you're job hunting. Hope something good comes up for you soon on the work front.
I have a Dobyns 701 ultra finesse with a curado bfs, haven’t used it yet but would like to purchase another reel and rod setup for spring fishing this year. Currently undecided love the info though
Sounds like a solid set up. So many possible options to complement it.
Do you have any videos on ordering from the Asian market? what are your experiences? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I appreciate the reply. I will pass on the KastKing.
I’m new to BFS, I just want to be able to throw weightless flukes and worms with a baitcaster and minimal blowups.Which one would you recommend for that?
Probably the Purelure Silver Feather DC. So forgiving with great performance: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DeDpPz5
And yes - the CQ BFS on the Hunt Series rod - I'm wondering if I'll find a better combo. ;P
It's the stuff of my childhood drems for sure.
Really surprised you didn't include the ARK Gravity in the $150 price range. Any particular reason?
Mostly the drama and confusion around the launch last year, and the fact the Haibo Arise Air is the same reel for $40 less and was out several months earlier. The Ark just never made it to the buying threshold for me.
Have you tried the new bfs dc reel called the Loongze Dc Air? I would if it will make the list?
Want to try bfs this season I picked up the dark wolf ultra and a mavllos resolute trout rod wouldn't mind an extra reel though
Sounds like a good start!
I have a zephyr and just got a solo king but looks like spring before I can use it. Put it on a handing magic l whole setup less than $60
Yep - that Handing Magic is maybe the best budget rod option these days! Crazy how good of a BFS combo you can make for $60!
I have a sougayilang model ul602 rod I got from Walmart for $30 paired up with the zephyr. Cast good with the 1/16oz zman flashback and spinnerbaits
Great review. You have an extra sub
Awesome, Thanks for the Sub! I am not respoinsible for your dwindling checking account balance though. :P But seriously, I hope you have an awesome day next trip out.
Lol Thanx so much and same to you. I have a few of these in my wish list. Will pull some triggers soon
My favorite reel is still the shimano Aldebaran 22 for all around BFS
I was just thinking about his today. I agree with you - I just tend to grab the Gekka first about 8-9 months out of the year because I'm throwing primarily lighter stuff.
Aaron thanks for info. I have 3 Acuras, slx, zillion with a bfs spool and tatula 80 with gomexus spool. They are tools in tool box. Dovello is my favorite I was wondering if you were going to try a Histar bfs reel?
Take a look at the Bill Lewis Gnat crankbait for the money they look like a super finesse lure and it's a great price.
Thanks for the reminder! I remeber this being announced then promptly forgot asbout it. :P
@@AaronHuntFishing indeed inevitable, tackle addiction is a real problem :)
As far as I‘m informed only the Chinese batch of SS AIR TW had to be recalled, but I‘m not a 100% sure…
@@arnemueller2112 I'm not either. And since I wasn't one of the first to get it, I'm letting it settle out for now.
Good video great information
Glad it was helpful!
There is like 0 engliah reviews of the doviello flyplum r2. Can you snag one?
nope. Flyplum? really?
Which salamandura do I get? There’s so many options for it
The AIR. That is the BFS model.
@@AaronHuntFishing awesome thanks for the help and the video!
Which
rod would you match with the Conquest BFS.
Of course it's my signature Hunt BFS. :P
before I had it on that, I was running a Yamaga Blanks BlueCurrent III. I'd also consider an Abu Garcia Eradicator, or some of the Megabass P5 Destroyer line.
Jst in case you're not familiar with my rods, here's the link: mysig.io/61aQn1DOz2xN
Where can I get the Diawa Salamndura? Thanks
AliExpress is the best place to get it for english-speaking people: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DDoHDgX
The price fluctuates, ABC Spider, West Door, and a couple other shops usually have it.
What size braids do you use on your BFS and what number of carriers. I’m thinking about buying some Varivas in the 8 carrier.
Typically 8 strand. I've been using 6# to 8# Daiwa J-braid or J-Braid Grand on most of my set-ups for the last year now.
Im waiting on my Histar Aurora
I almost pulled the trigger on that reel, but after seeing the line up of Histar they seem to have a bit of a price increase on OEM items that are sold with other names.
I almost bought a HiStar rod on the 11.11 sale, but they advertised it at $30 and raised the price to nearly $70 when the sale started. So HiStar kind of lost my trust a litle. Too many other options. Hope the reel works out well for you. And it's just not feasible for me to try every single offering - they're coming out so fast! :P
What is your favorite BFs reel for micro poppers and say f4 ultra light Rapala jerkbaits???
Popper like the eurotackle one..
Probably the Aldebaran. Nice and light, mkaes it effortless to work the bait. fits int he hand nicely. fast retrieve to take up slack and catch up with fish after a blow up. Plus it casts pretty far. Great question.
@@AaronHuntFishing the k you for the reply. I was also wondering which Hunt BFs rod would you pick 6’8” or 7ft. And 2x, 3x, or 4x?
The Clamber just never made it to my "buy" list. Many folks seem to be liking the Cormorant.
@AaronHuntFishing I haven't ordered it myself but I've used it, it really feels like a better hicc50 or better overall dwu
Lol i shared by posting on fb. I only have budget reels. Im disabled and budget is my only way. So far best reel Acura Pro
I spent my entire life on budget reels until recently. They still catch just as many fish my man!
Hi Mr. Hartman…
Could you be a little more specific please?
Thank you
Rob Hilton
Daiwa Gekkabijin would be my vote for the giveaway. I’ll take one! 😊
Just one? :P
