I stand corrected this song is about Times Beach Mo. when the roads were sprayed with Contaminated oil to keep the dust down. Later their was a flood and the water was also contained. They had to evacuate. People were getting cancer. I saw this in a Documentary about about Rt. 66
I miss the 90s. I played this album non-stop when it came out. . . for many years. Still so incredible. I saw these guys at Liberty Lunch in Austin and Doug Sahm showed up for the encore to sing Give Back the Key to My Heart. People were freaking out lol. Incredible show.
What a kick ass song----a REAL country song!!! Love its style---hard to describe---Jay Farrar between his writing, his voice he uses like an instrument itself and the skills of those who have played in Son Volt over the years----just top quality music making..
Yes, the 20th anniversary features the phenomenal Eric Heywood once again... Now, Jay , please put the rest of THIS BAND back together ... PLEASE !!!!!!
So I'm not the only one who thinks like this. I stopped buying their more recent albums. It just doesn't compare to the 1st 3 Son Volt albums. Same with Lucinda Williams; she changed her style (she has that right, but I don't have to listen to it).
Awesome. Absolutely awesome. No matter how many times I here this, it's always great. Son Volt rules. Farrar's voice is incredible. Why don't we here more about these guys?
Thank You so very much for sharing these phenomenal songs . Every time I listen to them it takes me back to a happier time and makes these screwed up times a little more bearable.
I've listened to this song dozens if not hundreds of times but strangely enough this vocal performance by Farrar reminds me of Johnny Cash. Not close enough that you'd confuse the two.
Current 20-year anniversary "Trace" tour includes dueling slide-pedal guitars with Gary Hunt and Eric Heywood (who plays slide-pedal at this concert) and it i's like.....amazing for "Ten Second News." Saw them in Dallas one week ago. Timeless....

I've been fortunate to see Jay perform in Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt and numerous solo shows. Incredible writer!
You're a very lucky man. I've seen Jay and Son Volt but UT was a little before my time. Would've loved to see them live.

A Great Song & Underrated Album! WooF!
Such a great song. Farrar puts it all out there, the song just drips with emotion. The slide guitar is almost haunting. Thanks for the post!
Jay Farrar's haunting vocals make this a masterpiece.
A very powerful song---another of Son Volt's incredible songs and music.
Sometimes, the best-kept secrets are so good, you want them for yourself. Such is Son Volt/Trace.

Great video of a great version of a great song....

When that lap steel hits...
Keep coming back to this.
This album was so underrated its fkn unreal....
Hmm. Most see it as the best Alt-Country album of all time.
@@ouyrwq right? In what world was Trace underrated? Undersold, maybe, but it's regarded as one of the genre's best.

My favorite song on Trace.
I see this comment on so many songs from Trace. Desert island record.
My favorite song from Trace is Tear Stained Eye. And Catching On. And Mystifies Me. Actually, the entire album is my favorite song.
@@absolutelynonameslef This guy gets it.
@@absolutelynonameslef mystifies me is a ronnie wood song
@@curragh4635 I know

+Steve Kendrick That's awesome news. I have 2nd row seats for his show in St. Louis this Saturday. Can't wait.
Dave Boquist is playing slide here not Eric Heywood. Eric played on the album version.
Excellent
I like this song because it sounds good.
these guys are great..left other good bands to go there own way..Americana
quality not quantity
heartbreaking

I think this song is about Jones Beach the accidental contamination
Times beach, maybe, dioxin. Highway 44, is a reference to I44 in Missouri. Times beach is near St.Louis.
Tear Stained Song is a great piece. That said the guitars are painfully tuned, if they’re tuned at all.
