    Great video. I like your lessons learned on the overnight passage. Many moons ago I stood watches as an Officer of the Deck driving a Navy Destroyer around the Pacific and things were very regimented and designed with safety as the first concern, all the time. I empathize with your statement that the fun goes away as the sun disappears, but on a full moon clear night, it can be stunningly beautiful. I could tell you some scary stories of things coming up over the horizon that were difficult to identify and therefore determining a proper course of action was difficult. Your Q&A was very good - yes on the 2nd pup! We have had several breeds and I have to tell you our little Yorkie is probably the biggest personality we've had - she keeps us entertained constantly! Good luck with your continued adventures. Oh yeah, one last thing - Shawn's obsession with maintaining Freedom is superb - someone down the road is going to inherit a very specially maintained boat should you all decide to move to something else.

    Elizabeth you are a smartass. I am laughing hysterically. "Shaun has reached his 14 hour limit...". You have to be a boating couple to appreciate the sentiment. Great job Freedom. You took a big step in this trip. Remember for a very affordable fee you can add a 3rd crew member. Then you can do a comfortable 4 on 8 off. Carryon

    Love the format of the longer distance travel videos. The sound of the diesel engine in the background is quite comforting and reassuring as you make your way through the passage. @ 5:23 - A rare moment to see Shawn and Mr. Sully in the 'backseat' and Elizabeth at the helm - in control. I was waiting for Shawn to ask "Are we there yet?"

    You talked about handling seasickness in another video. I found ginger snaps to be totally effective. The 2 keys are to insure they are made with real ginger and take them before you get underway. They taste good and have no side effects.

    On the tug I work on, the mate and I do a 7-5-5-7 watch schedule. 0600-1300, 1300-1800, 1800-2300, 2300-0600. That was good advice about staying away from crab pots and logs. Staying in or near to shipping lanes is good since fisherman don't want their gear run over by tugs and barges and ships. Just make sure you're visible to larger craft, preferably one that will show your vessel on their AIS display. Elizabeth, you should really start learning to maneuver the boat, soon. What if there is a medical emergency and Sean has to be airlifted off the Freedom? You need to learn how to start up the boat, pump the boat out, to maneuver and dock your vessel and to use emergency equipment like a dewatering pump if you have one, the fire system and other things, just in case. You're a smart woman and very capable. I think you can do it. :) On the dog breed..and size. Small is better, for reasons Elizabeth mentioned. Avoid a puppy though. A puppy might chew the woodwork on your boat, or other things or people...and a puppy would require constant care and attention. There's an advantage of getting a young adult but small dog from a dog rescue place. You'll get to see what its personality is like, and you can bring Mr Sully along to introduce it to Mr Sully and see if they will get along. Best regards and following seas.

    The content is great. Love the mixture with Q&A. Standard Poodle, female, is smart, loves water, and almost a person. Does not shed and needs to be groomed. I am on my third female standard. Had a number of different breeds. Love them all. Standard Poodle is definitely a cut about. She would love boat life.

    Shaun and Elizabeth, wonderful heartfelt, full of knowledge about you both, video. You're the sweetest couple. A terrific pair.
    How about a Labradoodle? Got to love those water dogs. Only drawback is grooming. Huge plus, not much shedding if any. Great for Shaun's OCD. ☺
    We have a Poochon. He is 8 years old and a barrel of fun loves to play ball. He fits in a backpack if necessary. Saddle bag would be better though.
    You guys have a great week too.

    Hope you make it down to Brookings, Oregon, we have a nice harbor and good bar crossing. Have seen many Norhavns stop here going up and down the coast. Another very interesting video. Love Mr Sully, I would get another one his size lot easier on a boat and in the tender.

    • @donhappel9566
      @donhappel9566 4 года назад

      I'm a fan of Brookings. I always stop there when transiting instead of Crescent City. An easy entrance. A bit too far to walk into town proper for 'stuff', but an easy taxi (yeah, taxi...no Uber last few times I was there) ride. And there's decent food options in the harbor itself if you want to get off the boat for a while. I do have to say though, the fuel dock can be a bit...messy.

    Thanks for taking us along, very interesting doing the longer run, q&a big 👍. Re the puppies we travel with two Jack Russells, find having two they keep each other company when left alone, and enjoy chasing balls together. We travel in a caravan and having the two smaller dogs means a bit more room for all, and being small makes them easier to handle / carry if needed. We have also found some places are happy for small dogs but tend not to be as welcoming for big dogs.

    Cape Flahtery is fun to walk out from road. About 1/2 mile trail. Great to have experienced and watch the puffin's play. Fished Neah Bay with my grandfather in a 16 foot skiff about 60 years ago. It hasn't changed much in that time. I also remember the "bar" on one salmon fishing trip. Broke many waves over the bow in a 50'.

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  4 года назад +3

      It’s super easy! We first cook tri color veggie pasta from Trader Joe’s and place in fridge. Then grill and slice up 5 chicken sausages along with 8 mini sweet bell peppers. Next, sauté a pack of sliced mushrooms and add the sliced chick/peppers and one bag of sundried tomatoes (about 1/2 cup). Finally, add in TJ’s vegan cashew pesto and the pasta from the fridge, stir together to coat with pesto, let sit over med/low heat for about 10 minutes and eat up!

    Found your channel just a week ago. Used to have a 36’ Jeanneau sailboat in San Diego from 2007 to 2018. When we sailed to the Channel Islands, (no dogs allowed on shore) I got a piece of sod for our Yorkshire terrier. It made a huge mess in the cockpit. Then I bought a potty tray and put a training pad under it. Our dog would not use it until we sprinkled a couple of tablespoons of dirt on the pad. Our dog smelled the dirt and finished his business very quickly. Of course, I would put a leash on him and pretend that we were going for a walk to the foredeck where I had set up the potty tray. He passed away 18 months ago.
    Awaiting the arrival of a beagle who was born last weekend. Hoping to follow your steps and get a trawler next year. Enjoy your channel immensely.

And great top-notch filming and editing, which l guess is mostly down to Elizabeth. And out of all the boats, sailing boats l look at, l am most jealous of your boat, it's so ship-shape, clean and l absolutely love the bridge, it has such a little ship feel, with those shaped windows and Portuguese walk around. Just a perfect boat. Sean seems such a knowledgeable captain and your both are so likeable as people. Not to forget the real star of the show, Sully of course.

    Thanks for once again being a great part of my Sunday... 👍
    Quick question:
    On another channel I watch (MY AWOL - totally different content from yours) they have a electronic detection system on the bridge that makes a noise if it doesn't detect any movement in a certain amount of time. And if it goes TOO long it sounds a second alarm for whoever is the backup to be awakened. So that in an emergency or something - the vessel wouldn't just float on its own for very long. Does FREEDOM have such a system or do they make something that wouldn't be too cost prohibitive to add?? Sorry if I forget what the system is called..
    Once again - thanks and safe travels! 😀

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  4 года назад

      We don’t have that but we do get small alarms on the auto pilot as it makes turns at waypoints or if we’re in seas that cause the rudder to go beyond a threshold we set. So far with the ability to watch cooking shows and reality TV at least one of us stays fully alert during the night 😉

    • @googlevoicer
      @googlevoicer 4 года назад

      MV Freedom - that’s cool and yeah I’m sure sometimes it’s a bit of a battle but it’s not like a daily thing (yet? Haha) at this point.
      I guess the largest concern, looking in from outside, would be if something happened while the other was asleep. (Not trying to cause a scare or anything.)
      In any case it’s cool that you have an after dark rotation and stuff. 👍🏼
      Travel safe because we’re all counting on your content! 😉

    • @googlevoicer
      @googlevoicer 4 года назад

      MV Freedom ~ I googled to see if I could figure out the system I meant.
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_navigational_watch_alarm_system
      I know it doesn’t necessarily apply to a vessel your size, just a thought. And I for sure don’t know how difficult (or expen$ive) it would be to implement either, haha.
      Anyhow... keep up the great vids (please) as it’s pretty great to share it with you both - I mean three. 😁

    Great video. Appreciate the cooking spot also. After standing hundreds of watches underway, I'd do 4 hour watches. Power naps are okay (2hr) but it will slowly creep up on you later. 4 hours gets you at least 2 hours deep sleep.

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  4 года назад +1

      We have but it’s far too expensive, and we’ve not heard great things unfortunately.

    • @DadKarn
      @DadKarn 4 года назад +1

      @@mvfreedom I was curious about the high expense you mentioned because I am looking for a solution for myself. When I was searching I came across a new handheld device that would seem to be affordable for myself that is in the $600 range. Thought I would pass it along to the two of you, in case this might be a possible option.

    I enjoyed this vid and it was well done like the others. I think you guys are getting better at this over time. It was interesting to see the docks and how high they are. Obviously, very big tide swings there? As always, like seeing the PNW boating. I’ve been to Seattle once years ago and to San Francisco and a few other places in CA but nothing water related. I’m all east coast and the Caribbean boating so I’m enjoying this new world on the water via your vids. Thank you for sharing.

      AKA JBS Smith yes we have very large tidal swings usually around 12 feet.

    Golden doodles are great boat dogs. Ours goes into the birth and sleeps when we are underway. Cruising doesn’t seem to bother her at all. The best part is they have less shedding

    Another great video guys When the auto pilot is on can you take over and steer with out turning the auto pilot off?

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  4 года назад

      Basically with the quick press of a button back to standby. Then once we’re ready to go back to auto it’s two more clicks to get us back on our route.

    We have two mastiffs, an English and an Italian (Cane Corso) both great friendly mutts with people, but they do keep strangers on their toes, just because of their size. Anyone who sees one of them roving your decks will not be coming on uninvited, even though they might only get licked to death.

    Great VID!! Being an old North-westerner I’m jealous and thrilled for you guys to be doing a Left Turn trip! Always wanted to run the Washington-Oregon coast from the water versus the many times we’ve driven the most beautiful part of the continental coasts. (With Maine being a close second which we have done by water.) Fair Winds, Calm Seas and Safe Travels... Enjoy Astoria! Question: Do you have Engine Room Video...? If so how often on your watch do you check in on the Engine Room?

    • @mvfreedom
      @mvfreedom  4 года назад

      In our Another Day in Paradise video Shawn does an engine room check but we typically do them every 4 hours or so!

    Get another dog like Mr. Sully. I have a dog like Mr. Sully. His name is Jimbo. I enjoyed the cruising time on this video from the early morning start till you tied the boat up. Sean's dinner looked delicious!

    Hi. Love all of your video, I find myself viewing them many times more then once twice and more. You two are great mentors for me when it’s my time to captain a Nordhavn. Do you have a website or a list websites and and apps that you can recommend on anything and everything you use the make this happen.

    Lagotto Romanolo❗️. Water dog that's at home around water. Very smart. They do not shed. Max out around 30lbs but often are 25lbs. Human like eyes. Rare breed but very cool. I'll never have a different breed again.

      Interesting we’ve never heard of that breed but given the First Mate is a purebred Italian this seems appropriate 😉

    Hi, we have enjoyed all of your videos. We have a small boat here in Ohio and can't get enough water. I am retiring next year and going to do the loop. A suggestion: You cover a lot of the "Good" however I would like to see more of the "Bad" and the "Ugly" side of living aboard. maybe enumerate some of the things that you would consider "Ugly" part... Thank you in advance. John & Carrie Moseley som of your biggest fans in Ohio.
