- Three in one today!!! Lucky you: I make my Christmas cake in the slow cooker. Preview my fabulous new Christmas collection with Mounir and share a few laundry tips. An ecletic mix, but I hope you enjoy it! xx
Julie Sear Christmas Cake:
Ingredients:
300 g natural-colour glacé cherries, washed and halved
240 g sultanas
360 g raisins
360 g currants
100 g mixed peel
40g glace ginger (or finely chopped stem ginger if you have trouble getting hold of it)
200 g salted butter
200 g molasses sugar
200 g plain flour
4 medium free range eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Pinch of ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon mixed spice
160 ml brandy, plus more to feed (about 6-10 tablespoons, to taste)
70 ml vodka
Method:
Preheat the oven to 140°C (275°F/Gas 1).
Grease, base and side line an 8” round solid base cake tin (min 3” depth)
Place the dried fruit, peel and glace ginger into a large bowl big enough to hold the entire mix and mix together with a large wooden spoon.
Place the butter and sugar in a small, microwave-safe bowl and heat for 1 minute at a time, stirring with a whisk at each interval, to mix the butter and sugar together. If you don’t have a microwave, do this in a non-stick pan over a low heat and melt gently.
Beat the eggs together with the vanilla extract.
Add the spices to your flour and mix well with a metal spoon or whisk to disperse
Add the spiced flour to the fruit and toss over with your hands to mix through
Tip the warm butter and sugar mix into the large bowl of fruit and mix well. Add the beaten egg and mix well. Finally add your brandy and vodka.
*I cooked mine in the slow cooker, one hour on high then low for five hours, tie a tea cloth around the lid to absorb the moisture*
Place in the oven and bake for 1 hour, then turn the heat down to 125°C (250°F/Gas 1/2) and continue to bake until completely cooked through. This will take approximately 2-2 ½ hours, depending on your oven. Check that a sharp knife or a skewer comes out almost clean.
Whist still hot, spike all over the cake with a skewer to make holes and pour over more brandy to soak the cake.
Once cooled, double wrap in parchment and then wrap in strong foil. You can eat this after a week but ideally make a few weeks before you need it, and you can store it in a cool dry place for up to a year, feeding with extra brandy if you wish on occasion.

Oh Helen so impressed with your iron, where did you get that, what sort. I have had at least 7 Irons with steam non of them had that high steam.
Please show us more of your preparations. Nowadays mine are not that existing as my kids and grandkids live some hours away. So i enjoy yours and remember my own 20 years ago. Now its perhaps 2 cakes lol.♥️

Hi Helen. Ironing- the bugbear of my life! I think your iron looks like a great steamer but could you perhaps tell me the make? The t-shirt folder looks brilliant and really helps to keep them all the same and it looks so much neater when stacking them! Lovely new jewellery pieces too. I’m afraid I’m no baker so I won’t be making a Christmas cake and it’s not very traditional here in Greece. If I ever fancy one there’s always M&S, thank goodness !😜🧡🍁

Hi Helen, very very easy Christmas cake. I’m very much like you were ironing is concerned I quite enjoy it. I’ve always rolled my towels but liked the look the way you do it so I’m off to change my towels. I’ve always folded t shirts like you without the guide they come out pretty much the same. @@Helenmaryjo Just a thought which came to me as I wrestled to change my duvet cover - do you, or your fans, have any tips on how to get the new cover on! I have tried to follow the one where the cover and duvet get rolled up like a swiss roll and then something happens at the ends and bingo! it is unrolled cover fully in place! Never worked for me..... Thank you.

Seeing you use starch reminded me when i first qualified as a nurse we had to use cold water starch on the fabric to make our nursing hats... it was an art back in the day.

Well the video I didn’t know I needed! 😂. I don’t like Christmas cake but seeing how easy you made it look I’m going to make one as a gift for my neighbour. Also… totally off topic but you always say you wear Clinique Aromatics and I’d never smelt and wondered if I’d like it. I have a perfume subscription so chose it as last months choice and every single time I’ve worn it I get lovely comments off people. I can smell it all day and so for me it’s a total winner and the full size has been put onto my Christmas list 😊

Helen loved watching the mixed video especially rhe laundry bit. My two daughters think I'm overly fussy about folding towels but after your tips, they ain't seen nothing yet! 😂 They and my nieces never got over seeing the socks in the airing cupboard all facing the same way and they still joke that if they’re facing outwards then mother is thinking of moving house yet again!! 😂

Thank you for another great chatty video Helen. The folding of the t-shirts reminded me of when I worked for Jaeger in the early 1980s. All knitwear was folded like your t-shirts but we had to learn to do this by eye. I still use this for my t-shirts and knitwear now (we were always told never to hang knitwear as the weight of it will stretch the garment! Really look forward to your videos x

Of all my friends, and my son & daughter in law's friends, I am the only one that still does ironing. I love it - and I solve all the worlds problems as I iron. I love the results - very satisfying! I have a folding board too which I use for my husband's tees, (also very helpful for folding when packing). I don't have a laundry room - but we do have a basement, so that's where I can stash all the extras! My freezer, washer and dryer, treadmill etc. are all down there.
