    A lovely family video. Thank you so much for sharing. I also started a bottom draw when I got engaged in the early 80s. Still have many things from that bottom draw that I still use over the years. No bottom draws today! Young people have most things when they get married. Dishwashers, freezers you name it they have it. They don't know how lucky they are today. Oh my giddy aunt I sound just like my mother 🤣🤣xx

    My mum worked at Metal Box in Nottinghamshire for many years. She worked in the factory along with two of her sisters. She also had the same flour sifter. She also used to put sixpences in the Christmas pudding. Memories are wonderful.

    I remember when I was a child,a long time ago (I’m 79) my mom would make the marzipan out of ground almond,sugar,egg whites,and I suppose a little salt,and of course royal icing.I just love marzipan,I can’t even trust myself with it,I will eat the whole thing.I seem to remember the plum pudding being steamed in the old copper,in the kitchen.Icing sugar has cornflower in it to stop it sticking together.

      I don’t think fermented jam will hurt you,just taste a bit off.The only thing I think is it’s best to use a new jar,as one you have been digging into could have bacteria in it,then it would go moldy.

    Hi Helen, funny you should talk about metal box, I used to work in Baker Street in London I worked for Marks and Spencer in their head office and metal box was the last block from us. I always made my cake the end of September and every couple of weeks I used stick little holes in the bottom and put some brandy in it, then about 2 December I would marzipan it and my hubby used to ice it on Christmas Eve he loved to do that.❤️❤️

    Everything looked great - last Sunday (Nov.26) was Stir-it-Up day, although I've never made a Christmas Pudding either! Not a big thing here in the US, so I usually just buy a small one from the British store, and make some Brandy Butter. Christmas cake (decorated) is also not a thing, and the fruitcake here in the US is usually filled with lots of candied cherries and pecans, and undecorated. Made me home sick!

    Helen, just out of interest, how much marzipan and fondant icing did you buy. My "first time made" Christmas Cake is an 8 inch and I have got 500g of marzipan and 1kg of fondant icing. The marzipan says to cover a 6 inch cake, so thought if you had the same amount, then I would be ok. Your cake and pudding looked fantastic, hope my cake comes out as well

      I think you'll be fine, just use plenty of icing sugar and roll it out thinly. Good luck. You'll have loads of icing. xx

    I used to think the marzipan was the best bit. I once went to a wedding where the marzipan was deeper than the cake. Yummy. Sadly I am now allergic to nuts and marzipan is now ‘off’.

    Hi Helen great video. How do you store the pudding after slow cooking it. Looked great and nice and moist. Missed a few videos as just got back from the uk. A lot of catching up to do. Thanks as always.

    Cake looks great ,Billy has got so tall,lovely to see you all having a stir of the Christmas pud 🎄Helen does the glass dome over the cake keep it fresh for a long time?

    • @Helenmaryjo
      @Helenmaryjo  11 месяцев назад

      I think the icing does that but the dome helps a little xx

    Hello liked how you iced your cake etc. I presume the marzipan and icing dough were readymade or did you make both yourself? Here, we make both of these things at home which is rather tedious and time consuming needing expertise to get it done right. I wish we could get this readymade stuff here ....Oh to be young again !! ....and have all the energy to make it for Christmas 😂😂😅 ... after retirement..I feel its hard ... blessings for your channel Helen!! luv Andrea ..India

      Yes, we are lucky enough to have all of these things to make life easier. We just take it for granted until it's pointed out. Thank you xx

    Did you put water in the slow cooker or just the bowl. The first year I’ve made mincemeat out of the leftover fruit from my cake making lol. I make my cake pretty much the same way as yourself as I’m no baker either xx

      Hi Rhonda, I'm using the two Ultenic ones that I was given. I have a Ninja, but thb I never use it now. I'll link the video here. xx. This is the double but they make a single drawer one too. ruclips.net/video/HLr8gefS31E/видео.htmlsi=XW5DHbLUYxHQsdTl

      I think with the fondant icing it won’t matter,but with royal icing you would need to dry it,or the royal icing could melt.
