    Pro tip for secured loads: always plan a place to stop within 2 or 3 minutes of departing (and always before a national speed limit) to check the load hasn't shifted and become less secure. It can also help to walk away and walk back after securing your load. The fresh perspective may help you spot a mistake

    Clip at 00:44 happens to me so often pulling into my street. Really tight corner and people have a tendency to park on double yellows (just out of view from the main road), meaning you need to slow down more to make sure you arn't going to plow into someone. Despite signalling early and giving the break a squeeze to alerts those behind you are slowing down, you still get people nearly running into the back of you, giving you a death stare or a tap of the horn. So impatient, me me me attitude.

    • @MartinParnham

      Happens on a corner very near me as well. When turning in from one direction, it's deceptively tight and you can't see all the way around the bend so I slow right down to take the corner. As it's shortly after a 30mp changing to a 50mph I deliberately slow early, keep to one side, and signal early to make it obvious what I'm about to do but I'm amazed the amount of people who nearly go into to the back of me or zoom around the outside without looking whether anything is emerging.

    After driving in Asia for so long, it confuses me to see British carparks still park bonnet first, instead of reverse parking. The turning circle reversing is much tighter and easier to get into narrow gaps (spaces here often not big enough to open both doors) - but can Brits be persuade to reverse park? I think Ashley that you lay too much at the door of the updated Highway Code, I suspect very few road users or pedestrians have changed their ways because of them.
    The cyclist in the clip seeing stationary traffic, had probably already decided on his actions without considering the traffic may start moving before he got there.

    • @ynotnilknarf39
      @ynotnilknarf39 Год назад +2

      Surely it was already a thing to allow people/vulnerable road users to cross in these situations long before the updates which just strengthened matters. I've been letting people cross at these types of situations for decades, both when I drive and when I cycle.
      it's basic hazard perception afterall, you remove the hazard that you in your motorvehicle present to vulnerable parties by simply allowing them to go on their way. There's no need to worry whatsoever then as to what is going to happen because you controlled the situation by removing the potential dangerous outcomes through a simple bit of decision making. it costs you nothing in terms of time yet people feel happier and safer and are more likely to pass that on to others.
      The driver in this instance should have been looking around them to assess who was in the vicinity and either waited or waved the cyclist across, it's not that hard to do tbh.

    • @mcdon2401
      @mcdon2401 Год назад +2

      @@ynotnilknarf39 having watched the earlier clip when someone crashed potentially after mistaking a flash for permission, I'd suggest that's ample warning not to signal a cyclist to cross. Best practice as discussed here before would be to hold position and let the cyclist/pedestrian etc make their own choice.
      In this particular incident it again appears that both road users presumed that the other wasn't going to move, and then involved themselves in the incident. The car driver should absolutely have checked both sides before moving, but the cyclist should also have been checking to make sure the driver had seen they were about to move off. If either one had been more observant, there wouldn't have been a collision.

    • @ynotnilknarf39
      @ynotnilknarf39 Год назад

      @@mcdon2401 Well the situation of waving someone right next to your windscreen is utterly different to a supposed flash that the driver at the T junction who pulled out could not have seen in any case due to the angle of where the vehicles were. they simply pulled out without looking.
      You still need to look around you as a driver, particularly when pulling away from a stop, or had you forgotten that basic bit of driving that you were taught? Also due to the fact you are in a huge mass of metal and the persons at the side of the road are vulnerable you should absolutely be ensuring you allow them to do what they need to do to get where they are going, this removes any chance whatsoever of harm to them, it also makes others behave in a better way..
      That it also could be that they have priority in the first instance seems to have avoided you.

      Road users have a responsibility to other road users to act safely, but that means keeping themselves safe just as much as it means keeping everyone else safe. Doesn't matter who you are or what you're doing, your rights come with responsibilities, and number 1 on that list is keeping yourself safe.

    7:42 [looks familiar]
    The main A27 between Portsmouth and Chichester has this identical problem. The drainage was incorrect when built so the 1st lane floods in heavy prolonged rain.
    At night it is almost impossible to see the water and you aquaplane when you hit it. At 60MPH it is just about controllable. At 70 or plus you spin and hit the central barrier.

    • @ynotnilknarf39
      @ynotnilknarf39 Год назад +2

      Why would you be doing the maximum speed limit at night and even more so after it has rained heavily? Surely standing water and a wet slippery road is a possibility on almost any road after heavy rainfall right, it's not uncommon and for drivers to say it's impossible to see simply highlights the standard of driving/attitude were drivers keep going at the maximum if not more when they can't see shit.
      HC rule 126, drive at a speed you can stop well within the distance you can see to be clear, if you can't see what's in front of you you're either not looking/seeing properly or you're going too fast, more likely a bit of both but certainly the latter.
      When it has rained and it's after dark, slow down, it's a maximum LIMIT in the best conditions, so you'd be doing 50 in a 60 zone at most, which gives you more time to react to what you already should know is likely to be a hazard, like standing water etc.

Get up to speed as quickly and safely as you can and offer an apology to the driver you caused to slow. (Be that a flash of hazards or a wave of some sort) or B. Like most now just sit there and dawdle along making no effort to get with the flow of the road and completely disregard anyone else and stay in your own little world.

      I think the general rule of "do not cross or straddle a solid white line" is a good one, but with bus lanes it is a little bit more hazy, for example many bus lanes are only in operation for part of the day, and sometimes buses (and other allowed vehicles) may need to leave the bus lane to turn right, or pass another vehicle. The overtake at ~1:33, but motorbikes just like cyclists are allowed to filter, but the crossing solid white lines need to be tested and defined by a court, because as it currently stands even the traffic officers don't know because the wording in the HC is " Exceptions are: if it is safe to do so and you need to enter premises adjoining the carriageway or a side road. In addition, it is permissible to cross the line as necessary and provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle." and when tested with police officers by a study (small only 12 officers and 1 sgt) it was evenly split 6 officers thought it was fine because the vechicals are stationary so your permitted under the code, 6 thought it was not because "stationary means parked", the sgt was open to either way and did not know. I'm not sure stationary means parked in this instance because the highways code does use versions of "park" when talking about vechicals being "parking", "parked"...

      I cycle mostly for transport (since the 1980s as a teen) and was an advanced driver (I gave up my vehicle 5 years ago but drive my partners car once every two weeks or so when we go out). In all honesty I'd rather the lines were not even there but truly enforced speed limits that were lower on almost every road type as well as better testing and continued testing/training.
      The way I see it, it's either safe to overtake/pass or it's not, and to be safe there needs to be a margin within that assessed safety. The trouble is that's subjecteive, but by progressing slower you have more time to assess/plan what to do and where.
      More direction/control often leads to more errors in the longer run, we see this in the sporting arena as well with officials over officiating in a subjective manner instead of forcing the onus onto the participants to judge what is within the rules, then penalising if needs be for a transgression with heavier punishments the greater the transgression, within motoring circles there is hardly any threat/jeopardy these days.
      Also, the way driving has gone over the last 120 years, faster vehicles that grip the road like sports cars have made matters worse, trying to overcome that with driver aids only helps to a certain point and then you regress again.
      Stationary is stationary, however in one scenario the vehicle/s are more likely to move off, ergo you have to take more into account because of that, and where they are positioned. A parked vehicle is more likely to be right up to the edge of the lane, a stationary vehicle in what we see in this veideo is more likely to be central within the lane which reduces the available space down the offside. Unless you can see far enough to spot a place you can pull safely back into the lane, a right filter that you wish to take or entrance to turn into that does not interfere with other road users (of any sort), then you should not be filtering or crossing the white line.
      This is mostly about impatience, the typical MGIF because you can, even if it's deemed safe, but then that safety assessment is impacted by so many things, including the wearing of a helmet, both for motorcyclists and cyclists, as well as the steel cage for car/van/lorry/bus drivers

    At 1:09 there wasn't a flash. The oncoming driver drove over a speed hump, which momentarily raised and then lowered the car's headlamps making it look like a flash.
    I hate speed humps. They are a danger to car safety. (The exact same thing happened to my pastor's wife, when an emerging driver drove out in front of her thinking she had flashed him out.)
    Going over the speed humps provides unnecessary wear and tear to suspension components. It also makes the journey painful for vulnerable car occupants. I had to drive my wife out of hospital across speed humps just after her lumber fusion surgery. I was super careful but it was still agony for her.

Firstly they put in their hazard warning lights, second it would have been abundantly clear in the rear view mirror that they'd been seen and the car behind (the cammer in this case) was slowing down. There were also others on foot in the road ahead. Finally, anybody travelling so fast that they couldn't avoid the slowing car with hazard warning lights showing should not be on the road. Everybody, but everybody should, at most, be crawling past the scene of that accident with people on foot around. The driver with the hazard warning lights did absolutely nothing wrong.

    I did a poor emerge yesterday that was very close. I was crossing a short section of road to go into Tesco. The road comes up from the A27 as a dual carriageway on a curve limiting visibility, then closes down to single lane by a hatched off area, then a short lane opens on the left of that lane for traffic to the superstore, which then has to give way to cars crossing from the right into the store. This set up often leads to collisions, so I was watching this area closely. A small car came bombing around the lower section of dual carriageway, shifted onto the single lane section with his left turn indicator on, moved over the centre line between the straight on and left turn lanes. At this point I made the mistake of looking right to where the giveaway marking are, across the junction, anticipating he wasn't going to stop and give way to me at them, and he was on me, still with the left indicator on but going straight ahead. We stopped with millimetres to spare but it was close. He must have left his indicators on from turning off the A27, and everyone drives up that section of dual carriageway so fast you have a split second to make a decision.
    Lesson learned all over again; make sure they are definitely turning before moving, especially if they look like they think road driving is part of a GTA game.....

    I think that motorcyclist would argue they were not overtaking but instead filtering. It still doesn't excuse being in the oncoming lane on a blind bend.

    I remember as a kid my dad driving alongside Newquay golf club and a golf ball striking the car but I would have jumped if a club broke my screen, I think the driver in this clip did well.
    A couple of years ago I was almost struck in the head by a rugby ball while on a motor scooter, a kid was throwing it across the a city street to his mate on the other side. I saw the potential consequence if I had been hit, I pulled up, dismounted and gave the teenager a piece of my mind. I don't think he was used to being spoken to in the way I did, but I don't think he will do anything as dumb again, it didn't hurt that I was in uniform at the time.

    Hope that driver had windscreen cover on their policy. That golfer cost them a pretty penny while having a fit either way.

    Not sure if the flash may have been a speed bump or ramp there? It's certainly something we should look out for - it gives the impression of a flash.

      Yeah looked more like the speed bump for me. If we weren’t in the habit of flashing people though we wouldn’t have a doubt.

      I agree. But the flash doesn't really enter into it anyway. If you think someone's flashing you out, you wait until it's certain they're letting you go, and you make sure it's clear in all directions for you to do so.

    Can some people bend light and see around corners? It is quite astonishing that some drivers risk it on bends!

    8:45 How in the world does a *golf club* get airborne? Did the golfer forget to hold on to the club mid-swing? 🤣
    Seriously, I hope that the repair cost was covered by some insurance!

    1:32 - that motorcyclist is breaking the law by crossing the double line system to overtake when the line nearest is solid . That is not filtering and there is no exemption , except for emergency riders on a call .

    The clip with the flash is where the car goes over the speed bump, so no flashing by the driver of the black Corsa

    My 1st thought on the flash clip, is there a speed bump there? Ergo, is that a flash or a double bounce?

    At 5:24: In North America (I can't speak for the UK) it is illegal for cyclists to ride their bikes through pedestrian crosswalks, meaning that they do not get priority unless they are walking their bike through the crossing. I don't know if the law that was enacted in the UK in 2022 also includes a subtext preventing cyclists from riding through the crossings. It is, nevertheless, quite dangerous to ride bicycles faster than walking speed on crosswalks and sidewalks, regardless of what the laws state.

    crash at 3:49, think this is also what i like to call crappy car syndrome, if they see a less expensive car they take less care about parking next to them. My old KA was hit and scraped up and no notes left loads of times. Never been the case in my new fiesta.

    Don't think that was a flash at 1:20. I think it was the car going over the speed bumps which made it look like it was flashing. Maybe another valid reason to not react when you see/or think you see someone flashing.

    The call for bigger spaces is just a race to the bottom, that person choose a vehicle that was out of their skill level and ill-suited for the environment they're driving in.

    • @ynotnilknarf39

      This, bigger cars on the outside but no more space on the inside, it's all the so called protective crap that makes the vehicles builkier and heavier which in turn makes vehicles in the hands of inept humans even more likely to kill and maim.
      hence why the KSI figures haven't improved in recent times, and certainly even further back it's not down to the so called 'improved' braking or brighter headlights (which simply makes driver faster more likely at night). Drivers taking more risks thinking they are safer and take up more amount of space on the highway combines amongst other things to bring about worse outcomes.
      Motorcars should have maximum widths at least. my old 2001 Passat estate looks tiny now compared to the ridiculous behemoth types on our roads.

    There is a golf course with a hole that runs alongside a main road that descends a fairly steep hill. Although there is a fence, occasionally a golf ball will escape. I was almost hit by one that bounced over me whilst cycling down the hill. Easy way to get a few free golf balls from the drain covers further down though.

    0:44 I feel that driver. My road has these blue hoardings block most of the view especially where predestinations cross from near to far so I end up having to go from 40 to 5 then full gas up the hill. On the main 40 road I’ve had cars almost go into the back of me from this
