    Clip 15, easily my favourite. As my mum would say, "He's hurrying up to stop."
    I hadn't realised that I'd been learning to drive with my mum (who wasn't an instructor by the way, just what I coinsider to have been good driver) while being a passenger in her car throughout my childhood. She always used to gear down on the approach to a set of lights. She used to talk to us about what she was doing and I always considered her style of driving to be very smooth and comfortable as a passenger (in 80s era cars no less!).
    When I did learn to drive, I surprised my instructor one day when instinctively I changed down when approaching a red, without him ever having taught me to do so.
    Seems Mr Red SUV never figured any of these things out. Too bad, poor him.

      I once seen a child bounce off the side of a car the parent of the child didn't even notice the child had been hit and kept walking because she was too busy with her head in her phone. It was only when the driver got out and shouted the parent back when she realised and ran over in hysterics. Luckily the child was ok and only had a graze on her hand when she hit the floor. Thank god the driver seen her and hit the brakes in time i mean there was no way the driver could have avoided the child without hitting someone else but the fact the driver seen her quite possibly saved her a very bad injury or possibly even death as the child was only about 3.

    • @DjJtown

      Actually, it will cause the car to overheat quicker. With the hood off, there is too much turbulence in the engine compartment and is slowing the airflow thru the radiator. The only time it helps is after the car is turned off to dissipate the engine bay heat quicker. Anyway, it looks like there is front end damage to the grill and core support; which might have caused the hood not to be able to latch; so they just took it off for safety reasons.

    Clip 15 is by far my favourite! It makes me so angry when you’re trying to learn how to drive and other people who have passed their driving test drive absolutely appallingly. I really don’t understand why you’d want to drive so carelessly. Careless driving puts innocent people's lives at risk. I think it is so funny when other drivers have tailgated, blocked or otherwise bullied other people in ways we wouldn't dream of doing in a face-to-face situation, such as standing in a queue. I also liked the clip where the guy walked out onto the road too, again I find it funny when someone accidentally walks into us on the street or their shopping trolley bumps into ours, the usual reaction is to apologise and move on. But when driving, near misses are often met with instant anger - and in the most extreme cases, road rage... just like how the driver in that clip zoomed off after almost hitting the poor guy. 😂😂 absolutely love all your videos Ashley but especially this one. Clip 16: I am from Italy as well.
    Despite the high number of roundabouts in my Country, not all people use them properly. The main reason is that a lot of roundabouts do not have lines or markings that show the number of lanes (like the one in this clip). This makes understaning how many lanes are actually there very tricky. For example:
    1) In my town one roundabout has 2 lanes coming in from north and east, but 1 lane coming in from west and south and only ONE lane for exit all around (Note: the whole roudabout is wide enough to fit 2 cars side by side).
    2) Other roundabouts have 2 lanes coming in all around, but sticking to the outside lane is almost impossible for large vehicles like busses.
    So where are vehicles supposed to drive?
    I have have asked my driving instructors about this and they told me that if there are no lines dividing the tarmac in lanes, then there is only one lane. I still think that there has to be a mistake somewhere, because in my first example there are no signs that prohibit cars from entering the roundabout side by side. Yet, from what the instructors told me, they should not be side by side.
    I have come to the PERSONAL conclusion that I'll stick to:
    the right side of the road if I have to take the first exit;
    right or left lane (dependeing on the situation) if I have to go straight;
    left if I need to take the third or fourth exit.

    I don't have one favorite. Several of these clips show the importance of some lessons I learned a long time ago.
    1) If you are the first at an intersection/junction, don't start off blindly when the light changes for you. Instead, take a half second to look left and right for the idiots who are running through after their red light. This has saved me a few times.
    2) Don't just look straight ahead at the person in front of you. Look at the drivers ahead of him and the drivers ahead of them. Watch as far ahead as you can see. Look at the side roads. Look for two wheeled vehicles. If you don't look for them, you won't see them. Watch pedestrians - they are part of the traffic just like vehicles. They have right of way in certain situations. Respect that right of way. Also watch for those places where pedestrians THINK they have the right of way.
    3) You mirrors aren't just for making lanes changes or pulling away from the side of the road. Use them all the time when driving. Know what is around you and what other traffic is doing.
    4) Don't look at just the CARS that are near you. Look at the drivers. The driver's head will tell you their intent well before those blinking lights will. Use the other drivers wing mirrors. You can usually see his face and know where he is looking.
    5) If a driver is trying to get into traffic from a side road, the first sign that they are moving forward will come to you by looking at the tires of his car, not by looking for forward motion of the car.
    6) Change the language you use to talk about traffic around you. We refer to a bicycle as a cyclist and a motorcycle as a biker, but we don't refer to a car or truck as a driver. We call them cars and trucks. Those aren't cars and trucks. Those are people. When you drive aggressively in traffic, you aren't driving dangerously around cars and trucks. You're driving dangerously around people.

    Interesting variety of clips Ashley. Thanks to all the viewers for these.
    OK then here goes....... IMHO clip 15 just about takes the favourite spot - another clear demonstration that sticking to the speed limit (with the traffic signal timings being as they are) equals steady or better progress here. Bye bye SUV - classic!! 😎.
    The statement about making the poor treatment of Learner Vehicles into Law is one I endorse - seem to recall that petition failed to garner enough support before Parliament shut down pending Brexit 🤔.
    Many of the clips were somewhat shocking for various reasons but the one that stands out the most goes to clip 5 - the only reason I can think of as to why the Instructor is absent would be when a student is taking a test with an Examiner. If that happens to be the case in this clip then I suspect that the student failed their test, otherwise the Instructor really should've known better.
    I could comment on each and every clip here but Ashley has covered enough points or raised sufficient questions for debate so I will end my dialogue here.
    Good luck everyone and stay safe 👍

    Clip 15. It just sums up the habits of a disturbingly large amount of drivers on the road today. Always in a rush and somehow seem to think they're in the right. On the other hand, re-overtaking them at the lights and seeing the reaction put a smile on my face. Brilliant!

    Clip 3 is my favorite because I’m baffled that there are no laws protecting pedestrians in this situation. In my country, both left turning and right turning vehicles must yield the right or way to pedestrians which are about to cross the road. Additionally, the setup of the intersection in the UK really doesn’t incentivize walking as there isn’t even a sunken sidewalk and the road lines clearly indicate to pedestrians that they are intruding on car space

    • @dakerbal
      @dakerbal 4 года назад

      Nuntius Yes, that’s not good enough. Cars should also be stopping for pedestrians which are about to cross. Do you expect a pedestrian to look over their shoulder every time they cross a minor street?

    • @Woppettier
      @Woppettier 4 года назад

      @@dakerbal That's not really a good reason either, that was a fairly busy street. the law should really be about making cars err on the safer side because they aren't as fragile as a pedestrian

      Jordan what?

    • @dakerbal
      @dakerbal 4 года назад

      Nuntius lots of countries use that type of rule. The only problem with having to mark pedestrian crossings at every intersection is that they lose their value and straight through traffic also has to let pedestrians cross. The purpose of the ‘turning cars must stop for all pedestrians’ rule is that pedestrians typically aren’t able to expect a car to turn in their path, so cars have to be extra careful.

    That first red light jump was absolutely shocking! But number 15 was my fave! Why do people get so grumpy?
    People being so aggressive was a HUGE factor in my driving anxiety when I passed last year, it took me 8 months to finally be able to drive alone and even now a year after passing aggressive drivers set my anxiety off. We should all learn to be a bit more thoughtful of others and patient 😊

    Favourite favourite was clip three (the one at 2:48) with the pedestrian. Pedestrian was on that part of the road before the driver was. Hey Ashley, want to first say that I've been driving comfortably for the past 2 years, with no accidents (fingers crossed) just yet. I always find it fascinating watching your clips and seeing alternative opinions on what I *used* to think was suitable road rage. This channel has taught me to be kinder on the roads, and I honestly think every driver should take a page out of your book when faced with difficult situations. Hats off to you.
    My favourite clip in this video has to be the one from our Italian friend taking that wide approach to what was seemingly a simple left turn as such. If he simply kept left when joining the road at the falk then the whole incident could have been avoided. However, to make that unusual manoeuvre there must have been something blocking his entry to the left. Hense the swerve. I, therefore, think the overtaking car he beeped at was just impatient and wanted to get around him. That or the perpetrator was just a bit of a twat!

  • @TimRsn
    @TimRsn 4 года назад

    8:30. Mainly because overtaking and speeding hasn’t got him anywhere any quicker. It seldom does. But for the fact he is in the right hand lane at the lights when the left was empty. Which I think demonstrates his mindset.

People just aren't aware of their surroundings then blame the driver for their mistake! Special mention to the edge lane clip as this happens all the time!

    My favourite was definitely clip 15 where the SUV driver got overtaken after trying to drive quickly. This is exactly what happens to me on a daily basis... Being a fuel economy and emissions conscious person, I drive gently, and most of all, as smart as possible so I can maintain momentum and use the least amount of fuel. For city driving, this usually means you actually get to your destination just as quickly as if you were driving faster. Perfectly illustrated by this clip. I try to keep other people as a priority and so usually drive normally around other cars, but every so often a situation will arise where I'll be going slower than other people would like, and so people often overtake (which I'm perfectly happy with and sometimes encourage) or others will get frustrated. Then when we approach a situation like this one where they realise we're not actually wasting as much time as they think, their attitudes suddenly change, and they stick behind me until we part ways :)
    But I also found clip 8 interesting where the man pulled in afterwards... I've seen so many people pull in to give the other party a hiding or to "exchange words" but have never seen someone just pull over for a second to calm themselves down. Hands off to them!

    Going to have to go with clip 15. It was your videos that taught me about how traffic flows in batches based on number of cars rather than time, hence despite the distance the SUV has on the cammer's car they pull up side by side at the lights. Also you can use all the hand gestures you want because when I check my mirrors I'm looking for your car to measure distance not your face.

The only other instance i can think of when the instructor is not in the car (here in Norway at least, is for the final driving test (EXAM) where we have something called a sensor, not sure what it's called other places in the world). I believe the learner positioned himself in such a way so that traffic could freely move ahead and he wasn't blocking the road. Learner also waited until the traffic had red light before moving forward and continuing the drive. Loved the video :)

    Clip 18 is my favourite because it’s an all too common scene on country lanes. Many of the roads around where I live don’t have very long straights so motorbikes in particular overtake around blind bends and hidden dips. No matter what they try, the council can’t stop it - once a month or so in summer the air ambulance will land in a field nearby to a motorcyclist who’s gone head on into something.

    clip 4: as a learner I find roundabouts quite tricky, yes I have a grasp on all aspects and always proceed with caution + give way, but I find it hard to know if people are going to let me in, how fast they're approaching + whether they can stop.
    Having people like this on the roads doesn't help learners at all, not to mention the lives they endanger when behind the wheel.
    As a learner from Sydney, Aus we have to complete at least 120 hours of driving on our learners with a supervisor before we can get our license, and even then we are speed limited to 90km then 100km for a few years, and can't have many passengers to distract us between 11pm-5am as we are inexperienced (we have "P"/probationary plates to show the other drivers + police). So Ashley, what do you think of the Australian system and restrictions? I find the 120 hours quite a good number to be a competent driver ready to drive alone, and instructor lessons and other courses count for bonus hours.
