Very good information about our platform. I have a 2017 WRX base model and I put 89 and 93 octane in it. Thank you for your service in the coast guard. Im 20 years retired USNAVY. Great video. I cant wait to see the new wrx and STI that comes out. Stay safe brother.
Thanks man! Just purchased a 2015 WRX 2 weeks ago, and this was very helpful, mine didn’t came with a owners manual so i was confused about using unleaded or not.
I totally agree. I don’t push my WRX hard everyday, so I don’t mind the slower launches except for a couple of times when I want to pass trucks or go a bit more fun, and that’s one of the reasons why I love it. Good vid
One thanks for you service. Two thanks for this video I'm new to Subaru and have a 17 STI and I have been putting 87 octane in it for the month that I have had it. I had no idea it should be running on premium
My manual said 87 was fine (2018 WRX) but one of the traded-offs would be decreased fuel economy. So the fuel up will be cheaper but I’ll probably be refilling more often, so I’ll just stick to 91. But I’m happy to have a choice, the salesman at the dealer pretty much lied to me about the fuel requirements lol
Good video. If your budget is so tight that you can't pay the difference between 91 or 87 then you shouldn't have bought the car. Yes it can adjust timing but it still needs higher octane. Just watch your accessport readings and you'll know why. (Add a gallon of E85)
Nice breakdown. I'll remember that next time I'm at the pump. I'm also considering soundproofing my WRX. Are you going with full CLD, CCF and MLV treatment?
Good videos - watched them all. I have a new 2017 Levorg GT S which has the same 2 litre turbo engine, so I am finding these videos really useful. Well done.
Thank you! This video provides the detail that many forums just do not discuss! I commute a lot to work in my 2018 wrx so I will be putting in 89 and will save 91 for the weekends ☺️
I have a 03 wrx and have always used 93 but a few times I made the mistake of using 87, because my other car uses 87. I really never noticed a difference. But I just stick with 93 it's been running well with that.
Good to see you back and awesome video! I finally got in my factory order 17' WRX CVT in last week. Man I love it! Great explanation on the need to have premium. Hope to see more videos.
Im doing a 1400 mile road trip in my 2015 cvt soon, and it requires about 4 tanks of fuel. If I run it all day long for that many miles, nothing should go wrong?
I get 93 at Costco for the price of 87 at other places, so not an issue. I do have to drive across town, but I just line it up with other errands. May just get 87 or 91 in a pinch, though. Thanks for the info.
I've just recently bought a CVT 2016 and I love it! I have really enjoyed your videos on them and the knowledge you produce to other people. It helps a lot and this video in particular has helped me with this question! Keep it up man love these videos!
ex-mitsu owner here, tuned 1) if you often go to high revs, put premium if you don't track race or drag race it's less a problem really 2) evo also had knock control and while I never broke my engine thx to it, performance go down fast as soon as the cars think you have knock 3) and if you use bad fuel (I was running european 100oct but had to use lower from a backcountry station once) man your knock control will go crazy I had a knock light installed it went stroboscope on me I could not drive above 3k rpms as soon as the boost went up the ECU killed all power had to go with it and drive slowly until that poor quality gas was all used bottom line is if you can, buy premium if you can't know that it will limit the amount of performance you'll get from your car and in those conditions you do not want to tune it running with poor quality gas also removes a security that premium offers and reading about all the STis breaking in some places there's an obvious gas quality-engine failure link
Woo! I was waiting for your next video to come out. Here's a random question. What do you think about top-tier gas station, would that have any effect?
So all these manufacturers that are dropping the v6 and going with turbocharged 4 cylinder are basically gonna force more and more people to pay more for the premium gas
I have a new 2021 wrx and I keep getting black all over the back of my car bumper and trunk . I have been running standard 87 gas. If I put in premium would this stop? Or do I have another problem. I only have 2k miles. All completely stock.
Not only the WRX, but I lost count the number of Mercedes, Audi & BMW at my local gas station pumping either 87 or 89 octane fuel into their cars. I'm betting 90% of them are leased.
Great advice, you will keep mechanics busy for years. (sarcasm ) Go and see a tuner and do the same test on a dyno and see what the results are. Yes the car will try and reduces the knock but the car can not totally adjust to suit the fuel.
So if I'm gonna be commuting in the car and not using old ton of boost should I just put 87 octane to save money? And 92 when i have a wild hair up my ass for speed. What are mpg differences
So you’re saying i can switch between the two? Like for one week let’s say i’m running low on cash and regular is all i can afford would that be ok? Then when i do have enough for a full tank of premium gas, should I empty the tank full or regular gas first? This won’t harm the engine at all? Switching back and forth?
Owning a twin turb legacy trust me when I say any turbo Subaru loves the octane points , also not mentioned higher the octane less maintance you have to worry about
Thanks boost, I'll be filling it up today and limping it around till it evens out, maybe 2 tanks is what I'm thinking, well at least before I panic lol
Wow yous have bad fuel there, we have 92 95 98 100 Oct here and my exiga ej20 turbo runs 100 Oct it last an extra 80km per tank which is Decent for a non direct injection, from nz great tutorial though
Title of this video should be "Fuel Requirements for US delivered WRX: Is Premium Necessary". Fuel requirements will be different throughout the world to meet individual country emission regulations. For example. In Australia, 95 octane is the lowest RON fuel advised for any of the "Performance" Subaru range.
Keep in mind that they MIGHT just tell you that to not scare you away from buying the car. Personally I dont mind paying a few bucks more to fill up with 93 (turbo mustang), but there are people who freak out about having to pay for premium fuel...
Thank you, sir. I was day dreaming at the pump. Accidentally filled a tank full of 87. I’m glad my car will be okay.
The manual says you can use 87 if that's all that's available and you should fill with 92 as soon as possible.
Recently filled my tank with 93. Going to start using 91 since there is a massive price difference between the two in my area. Great info.

The real question is that subaru says fuel efficiency will decrease using lesser octane fuel. And you do notice that going from 91 to 89

Good video...I notice this even with my Impreza SPORT...Premium fuel, the car acts nicer
Can I use an octane booster for a 2008 wrx? my country only sells 87 octane fuel...thanks
I have 18 2.5 Legacy and I fill 89 always because I hear an engine knock above 3000 rpm with 87. Obviously the ignition timing is too advanced for 87.
Thanks mate I have one also and I run BP Ultimate 98.

Don't put cheap gas in your wrx. If you own an accessport and monitor feedback/fine knock learn you will understand why.
What do you suggest to improve the stereo? I need better sound that won't break the bank
Boost and Shutter I have the stock system .its horrible . the dealer never mentioned a kicker upgrade :(.
