Great video mate! your in depth info on the CVT for the WRX is not really anywhere on youtube. Learnt all this myself over the last 6 months of owning the car, still loving it.
The transmission gets a lot of hate, but i personally prefer how the CVT works.

sorry dude, the CVT WRX is a WRX in name only.
that transmission has no buisness in a performance car. none, nada, zip.
that engine and chassis deserve better.
if they wanted to make an auto version of the car... it should have come with a dual clutch automatic gearbox.
you like it... good on you. I guess.
      enjoy your "WRX"

as a 2018 CVT wrx owner you can go past stage 1, Pro tune with a F1 motorsports torque converter allows your CVT to handle the excess power that it previously wouldn't allow. (2k for that converter)

CVT can handle Stage 2 full bolt with Protune. Marcin (Bellipoten on NASIOC) has been Stage 2 for 100K and no trans issues. What’s important is the conservative tune from someone who understand how the FA works with the CVT.

As a Levorg owner (which has the 2.0 litre 197kw motor) I find these videos very informative. I had toyed with the idea of a stage 1 mod to the motor to get the power up the what the Japanese Levorgs have which i think is 221kw or 300ps, but I value my transmission too much. I have seen in the US there are kits for the CVTs - a stronger torque convertor and an oil cooler - which enable them to take far more power.
Anyway many thanks for the excellent videos.

Great videos man! I appreciate all the advice, I have a CVT for pretty much the same reasons as yourself. I was worried about constantly driving it in manual mode and what it would mean for the transmission. I find it a much better ride that way, and it does feel like a manual car. Up here near NYC, the automatic does wonders when I'm stuck in traffic

Had a WRX CVT for 3 years...nearly went mad because of the CVT! Its unconsistant, it kill all the fun part of a WRX, and 0-60 is way too slow. Yes, its the best CVT there is but, it really wasnt made for me. WENT back to Subaru after 3 years and got back to the STI. Now I know that my next car will have a DCT. Not going back to a CVT anytime soon.

another issue im having with my 2 month old 2017 wrx cvt is the steering wheel and car direction pulls to the left when on low speed and encounters a bump or imperfection on the road. alignment and tire pressures are at spec. maybe its because of the tires tramlining.

  • @29erfreak42
    @29erfreak42 7 лет назад

I think that the CVT has a bad rep, and some of it is deserved. Drivers, especially sports car drivers, are used to shifting and running the revs up...shifting again increasing the revs. It's classic sports car. Even standard auto transmissions go through that shifting. The CVTs used on most cars take away that feeling, making the ride feel boring.
The Subaru approach to CVTs got rid of that problem. You can have that boring feeling if you want, but it also has modes that will feel the same as a regular auto transmission. It even has a manual mode that allows you to shift as quickly as an MT (sometimes quicker) at any RPM that you want.
Is the CVT as good at pure performance as the MT? Nope, but it's damned close and for those of us that have other needs (daily driver/high traffic/family), the CVT is the best choice. It also allows us to add great safety features, like Eyesight.

you can fill your gas tank with pig semen too...
doesn't make it a good idea.
the stock tune is knock prone enough on premium...
and is tuned for emissions, and not safety for the engine or power.
hook it up to a data logger and see for yourself. the stock tune is trash.
and you advocate taking that lousy emissions slanted tune and further compounding the issue by running low octane fuel in it...
seems legit. if low emissions and running cheap gas was a factor in buying the vehicle... maybe you should have purchased a impreza sport.
don't put cheap gas in it.

Autos out sell manuals by a significant margin in all cars. It was very smart for Subaru to make an automatic WRX. Now they just need to improve the transmission to handle more power. 2500 rpms is not enough rpm to launch a WRX off the line. At 2500 rpms (launch control on a CTV WRX) the turbo boost lags, car bogs, and its 0-60 mph times are slower than the manual. That could easily be fixed by allowing a higher rpm launch (like 3500 rpms at least) so it will get off the line faster. When racing, I launched my manual WRX around 5000 rpms. Without a high rpm launch, the car just bogs and it gets off the line slowly. I like to get a little bit of wheel spin on the launch. That relieves stress on the tranny and helps you get a really fast launch. I pulled 1.6 sec 60' times in my lightly modded WRX.
