We often see the dog's walking their masters safely or the expert trainers who pass us. For many people their hearts go out. They just want to reach out. I am one of those who would like to say something to the person and pet the dog with permission. But, long ago, a blind person I knew told me how distracting and dangers my good intentions would be.
The Seeing Eye has been a presence and a present to our community. We are proud that Morristown is its home. Best to all those who, as the Scriptures tell us "Blessed are those..."

I've been working with Seeing Eye dogs since 1993. I never used a white cane. I was never one to let much grass grow under my feet, but when I came home with my first dog, a whole new world, minus a complex and often annoying system of coping mechanisms, opened up to me.
For example, I met my husband through a personal ad. We met at a mall food court on a rainy night, something I wouldn't have dreamed of before the dog. It was a mall I was not familiar with. My husband loves to tell people, "If it wasn't for Shelley's dog, I wouldn't have married her."
Living with a Seeing Eye dog had a profound impact of other aspects of my life unrelated to travel. For instance, I took up sewing and photography. I sewed the dress I'm wearing and took the picture using my camera's timer. My vision impairment no longer defines me. I define me.
My PSA to all you RUclipsrs:
NEVER ever grab a blind persosn by the arm and NEVER help anyone without permission and certainly not without warning. Additionally, don't forget; completely ignore the dog when he's wearing the harness, even if he's lying down. It's not only potentially dangerous, it's illegal under the ADA. It comes with a $1,200 fine and I have bills to pay.
If you want an understanding of what said distractions are like for the blind handler, just have someone take control of your steering wheel while you're drivling down the freeway in heavy traffic.

I really appreciate this short video and hope it's put in all public spaces. We really never fully appreciate any health related issues until something happens to someone we know. Thank you.
