Rick. I bought the Callaway mini because of this review. I went with it because of the adjustability and it’s been great. Now I need to see a review of the new Taylor made original one to see if its going to be my new rig!
Thank you for the review Rick. I put this club in my bag, I am a high handicapper 22 and struggle with consistency with my driver. Since going to the Mini I have kept the ball in the fairway 90% of time. I have lost some distance 10 -15 yds. compared to my Callaway BIg Bertha Alpha 815 but find the play much more enjoyable. I have a lower swing speed and adjusted the setting to +2 Draw that has made it much easier to strike the ball and get accuracy. I had considered taking the length on the 815 down 1" ( 45.5 to 44.5") the mini is ( 44" ) but I just like the feel of the smaller head. My swing speed actually picked up with the Mini. I also went to a Callaway XR 4 wood that has helped me a great deal in the fairway. Thank You for what you do.
Bought one. I had it adjusted to me. I have long arms and big hands. Cut the shaft one inch and put a bigger grip. Took it to the range and hit it tee and off the grass. Really like it. Bye bye three wood.
The mini revolution continues! I carry two SLDR Mini's....14 and 16....for tee and fairway as a HCP 12. LOVE them. I haven't carried a "driver" in months and don't need it. I'm finding fairways a LOT more and am plenty long, hit a few par 5's in two after some swing improvements. I never tee up higher than a finger width off the turf. Play the ball back and come in level to very slightly up and watch it rocket down the fairway. They're awesome on shorter shots....grip an inch down and nail the greens on those 220 yard par 3's. Don't even need a hybrid anymore. Save the club count for wedges. To all amateur players who struggle with driver....LEAVE IT AT HOME. Get a mini!
I will be using this off the tee, ive never liked the 460cc heads to big, i hit my driver ok most of the time. But i play my 3w alot . This is my game changer. I will show my clients and students that i teach. Maybe they will like it also. Most of my clients have trouble with their driver. We aim as instructors to make the game better and fun, this club can do that. Keep it up Rick Sheilds.
I want to try one of these, would be ideal for my game. Not always as aggressive as I like with my driver but feel much more confident with my 3 wood. Going to check one of these out. Nice review!
I love my X2 Hot Deep, but I could easily see getting this if I needed it because it still looks like it performs off the deck like the X2 Hot and the added adjustability is great. Even with the deeper face I have no fears about hitting off the deck/fairway. Seems like a winner!
I tested that club in the same loft & shaft at a demo day last month. That thing is sick! Amazing ball flight and so consistent. Can't wait to see it in your Vlogs.
Very much interested in this mini driver but wondering whether this is still a good option in 2024 or are there any other better options for mini driver like the latest version of TaylorMade BRNR mini driver? Rick, hope you can give your ideas on that ...
Thanks for the review Rick. Tried this in work today for the first time and couldn't agree with you more. This club is so easy to hit. I would be using it purely as a driver replacement if I was to get it. So I only tried it off the tee but it is an absolute monster. Looks and sits great too!
Rick I recently built a 45 inch taylormade 7 deg tour burner driver from 1988 or something tiny head steel head not titanium with a junky graphite shaft 45 inch shaft. Well I'll tell you it's the straightest club ever toe hits which I do a lot don't hook as much, yet it's punishing to the right as it's a 7 deg little head but I launched one 275+ in 50 deg weather with soft conditions at about 260 carry. Anyway Iv'e seen you hit a ton of balls and I can see this is the future of drivers for better players!! This club your hitting at 45 inch 8.5 to 9 deg of loft would be ideal for you off the tee no more wild left shots, and I bet you can still it it 315 yards when nutted. Whats better a mis hit at 280 just left or one 20 yards left because of the crazy gear effect from 460 cc heads right? Sure you might not catch it long as much kinda like tour blades, but it's straight all day even a terrible shot will go 268 with a ugly to hook and still bet 12 yards left center line.
Very interesting. Started using my 16 degree hybrid I hit 230-250 total rather than driver on holes that are tighter or have hazards etc(I have no 3 wood) this mini driver would offer an interesting alternative to my driver, which can get me in occasion deep trouble!
2023 and I’ve just bought one second hand. I was really after a New generation TM Burner mini driver but the difference in cash required on trade in , I felt wasn’t worth the gamble. Fortunately I got a great swap deal for some other clubs and will look forward to getting out with this. I’ve never liked big headed drivers and will hopefully be straighter and not too compromised on distance with this
@@archiegrimshaw9368 it’s a fantastic club, mid season I bought a Ping G410 driver seeking “a little more” however I’ve reverted to the Callaway. It’s so consistent for me set at 13degrees; I traded the driver back in on a PXG black ops 3 wood Big headed drivers just aren’t my thing
Imagine I'd prefer this to other mini drivers, the adjustability is such an advantage like you say it doesnt make it a one dimensional club. Have missed the reviews rick!
YIPPEE a new club winging its way to me. The Callaway 12deg Bertha Mini 1.5 will replace both my Nike Covert driver and Covert 3 wood freeing up a space in my bag for my 1 iron. The takeover of the long irons is complete, only the lovely Covert Tammy 3 hybrid remains. This was a no-brainer really as I will use this club to drive on 9 holes of our course whereas I only used the driver on 3 (usually resulting in at least 2 dropped shots) the rest being 3 wood and iron drives. To say that I am wildly excited is a massive understatement. I must stop watching these videos, Mr Shiels has cost me a fortune these last 2 years ;-)
7 years later I actually found this club for sale used for $75. I can git 90% fairways with my 5 wood but have had so much trouble with my huge head, newest gen driver. I'm going to test it out. Why not $70 for a nearly new looking 1.5 mini.
Awesome review as always. I'm seriously considering this club I'm 14 handicap, more consistent with 3 wood which I hit 260 80 off tee, Tour Edge Exotic XCG 6, 13.5 degree, I'm hoping to.pick up some extra yards with that club
Thanks, Rick. As in your review, ball speeds and dispersion were pretty much all that mattered, but what were the spin numbers like? Curious because people with slower swing speed than you potentially might need a higher loft. Thanks.
Nice one Rick, I play the Taylor made mini driver when things are going bad with the big stick so would be interested in trying the Callaway mini, keep up the good work buddy.
thanks Rick for your review. callaway is doing very well this year. I saw your reviews and have changed all from titleist. i'm 1.5 hdp and callaway clubs are easier and give more pleasure. personnaly got 815 DBD driver, xr pro deep 14 fw, xr hybrid and waiting for apex irons. thanks again and keep.helping us. rico
Hi Rick great review. I noticed you kept saying that the mini is a great replacement if you can't hit driver well and can hit fairway wood good. Im the opposite i can hit my driver really well but i can't hit my woods at all. would that club be good for that and not just for distance on the hit but overall hit. thanks
Back in the 80's when the Spalding Topflite Cannons came out the heads were tiny but made driving accurate and you could hit them off the fairway which was unheard of. Good to see smaller drivers coming back. Sometimes 460cc drivers look way too big. Sort of like a pumpkin on a stick. Smaller heads will swing faster. Hit a Spalding Good life Cannon driver from 1984.
Nice haircut! Thanks for the review as former PGA professional I find your reviews very informative. Is your clubhead speed up? You were swinging at 119 to 122 seems a bit high for you?
Love this club. I have been warming to these mini-drivers recently, they seem one of the most exciting developments of late. I could see me replacing my driver and 3 wood with one to free up a hole in my bag. Mostly I now find myself driving with the 3 wood or an iron. I just dont like woods so I only use them off the tee. With one of these in my bag i would have a slot free for my 1 iron which I currently just use on the range ;-)
+george naylor hard to say really as I wasnt getting on with my 3 wood so didnt have reliable distance for it, it was very variable, I took it out of teh bag, but I would say I hit this just about 20-30 yards less than my driver which was reaching 240 yards on a good strike. Come the better weather I look forward to measuring a good distance for this with my game balls. What I like most is I can hit it off my lower tee like any other fairway wood or off the deck. Few ladies can reach 200 yards so I can no longer be bothered carrying a driver unless playing men. Off ladies tees I mostly drive with my 1 iron which gives me a more accurate 180 yards, so the mini is nicely between the two ;-)
Interesting idea, but most modern 3 woods already fill this gap I'd have thought. I've always found 440cc+ driver heads verging on ridiculous anyway...
Hates the new Taylor Made 300 and thinks that it doesn’t fit anywhere in the bag, but loves this and sees the use? It’s the same thing, just from Taylor 6 years later. Makes no sense.
Rick Shiels PGA Golf Professional Manchester I noticed, in comparison to other reviews, you generated more club speed ... some of 113/115 and even over 120 mph. Is that because of the "mini" head? great review as usual.
Lol if only you could use the novelty multiple-loft clubs (the iron-looking ones that change from driver to long iron to mid iron to wedge to putter) - now THOSE would be fun! But as is the case with any adjustable club, you cannot make adjustments mid-round.
That was just on one shot. It happens now and then with launch monitors. Though I do think his club head speed has got a little faster over the last few months.
I was going to say the same thing. In the 80s when I used to play golf I quit the driver and used a 2 wood for a year. Then metal woods came out and that was that.
Works for people who struggle with driver yet can't hit a 3 wood, which is a large number of amateur golfers. This club is honestly unreal off the tee, and just wants to go straight. Massive niche in the market for these mini drivers
TXchadTX Yea agree with you, I do hit my 3 wood far already and it's my 'safety' club off the T if I have a tight fairway. The loft difference just isn't there, you will have this in 12-14 degree setup and have a 15 deg 3 wood? doesn't make much sense. Maybe if you went with a 17deg 4 wood mixed with this and remove the driver it could work.
TXchadTX For me this is the perfect solution to my problems, I play a very tight course and I am a very long hitter. There is only 3 holes on the course where I would consider a driver and I dont like using woods anyway. So today I bought this to replace my driver and 3 wood leaving a space for another long iron.
+TXchadTX They're a LOT easier to hit for most amateurs. The forgiveness is incredible. I've hit some heel'd or toe'd shots with the SLDR mini and still got great results. They just inspire confidence.
Why are you even carying a driver, when you can just hit this in the Fairway all day? I would buy this, but I cannot find a X-stiff...which are $300??? WTF? Why would I spend $300 for a 3 wood?
I keep the Mini in my bag and decided to use it as my driver, what is nice is that I can hit the mini off the deck providing it is in good grass. Two clubs in one :)
I saw one at Golf Town yesterday, used, $80. Always wanted one, but I was in my work boots so I had it put aside so I could try it on the simulator today. Incredible. I've never hit on a simulator before, but I also tried a couple of drives and my swing speed was about 92-94 mph which I thought was about right. I hit my XR2Hot driver about 250 when i make solid contact. I was hitting this mini-driver 240 ish and my swing speed was the same as the driver. It's hard to describe but it just gives you more confidence and you swing smoother and harder because you're less afraid of mishitting. I got it regripped and it's going into my bag this year for sure. I'll carry it as a second driver and see how it goes and hit it plenty on the range to get a feel for it.
Rick. I bought the Callaway mini because of this review. I went with it because of the adjustability and it’s been great. Now I need to see a review of the new Taylor made original one to see if its going to be my new rig!
i have bought all the big heads you name ithem I bought them but this is the club for me! love it! I'm 68 now and this is perfect!
Thank you for the review Rick. I put this club in my bag, I am a high handicapper 22 and struggle with consistency with my driver. Same. I left my driver at home today. Hit the Srixon Z F45 3 wood and Hybrid off the tee. Great fun. Better sound than a 460cc driver.
2022 and I'm looking for something along this lines. Rick, you've come a long way.
I want to try one of these, would be ideal for my game. Not always as aggressive as I like with my driver but feel much more confident with my 3 wood. Going to check one of these out. Nice review!

I second this!!

just bought this brand new for $90!!! got my driver for 2017 with a stiff aldila rogue shaft! woo hoo!!!
Very interesting. Started using my 16 degree hybrid I hit 230-250 total rather than driver on holes that are tighter or have hazards etc(I have no 3 wood) this mini driver would offer an interesting alternative to my driver, which can get me in occasion deep trouble!
Omg, I thought what is this guy doing on Rick Shields’ channel. If I hadn’t heard the voice I wouldn’t have known! Keep up the good work mate.
Saw one in a local golf store. Then came here. Going back to the golf store!

good information i just bought it and enjoy it so far good flight and yards

Rick, what are your thoughts on spining graphite AND steel shafts, even shafts who's fibers are 'wound over mandrel'? David
Great video,informative as usual.
Rick! Do a Mini driver battle royal. SLDR vs Aero vs Bertha!
Yes love the review videos. Do more Rick
Just seen Rob Potter on Callaway Xr Advert.Get in there Rob.
Is it in the bag Rick?
How long do you usually hit your real driver compared to this rick?
In your bag rick shiels?
Terrific club for you....
Geez Rick I noticed on that last one you hit at 12* your club head speed was 119! Getting up there, you doing a quest for 350 now too? haha
just ordered it off amazon mate
Would be great to see a head to head against the Taylor made equivalent???
Nice review Rick.
know that you like ping you should try the Ping Rapture fairway wood, which is also adjustable
Christopher Simao That Rapture is pretty pricey. I got sticker shock. LOL

+Coochicoo BOOM!!! Got one.
Good job Rick
Can you change loft options during a round and as this has multiple loft options could it be suggested that you have 15 or more clubs in your bag?
Lol if only you could use the novelty multiple-loft clubs (the iron-looking ones that change from driver to long iron to mid iron to wedge to putter) - now THOSE would be fun! But as is the case with any adjustable club, you cannot make adjustments mid-round.
If you are playing with friends no one cares what you do
Great video!
Very good review, that's got me thinking about my tight gorse lined local course. What is the music in this video please ?
Rick, when did your swing speed start getting up into the 120s?
Gc2 hmt bug ? Because the ball speed didn't went up
Y0RIC HUNT Yeah that seemed off to me as well, especially with this club...
That was just on one shot. It happens now and then with launch monitors. Though I do think his club head speed has got a little faster over the last few months.
Putting it in the bag?
omg i want def on my wish list
the reason they have it in the fairway section is because it replaces the 3 deep wood
I hit my 5 wood 200 yards today. This is strange because that's further than my driver right now
Great versatile club! Ill try that one :)
I would love to see this in driver lofts
What happened to 'My name's Rick Shiels down 'ere at Trafford Golf Centre'?
Mini Bertha vs callaway XR PRO fairway????
I feel like Big Bertha Mini is really just the next edition of the X-Hot 3Deep
+gocanucksfan123 Hi, I tried the X-Hot 3 deep, and traded it for this club. Much more performance for me.
Rick, do you still have this club? Can I purchase it from you?
this thing looks incredible lol
Wow Rick, no beard and 121 club head speed! 😄
Love mine. No more three wood.
Aeroburner Mini Driver will smash this
I don't know if the Aero Mini Burner would straight up smash it but it's definitely right there with it for sure.
Alex Nuschke because your own it?
nice!!
Pride won't let ppl let this be their gamer.
At 44" without cutting the shaft down - how does a club golfer expect to use it off the deck? Just cut your driver down for tee shots.
It's nothing more than a 2 Wood
BigBlueMSP No its a beefed up 2 wood, its a 1.5 wood he he
I was going to say the same thing. In the 80s when I used to play golf I quit the driver and used a 2 wood for a year. Then metal woods came out and that was that.
Got distracted by that guy in the back with sunglasses.
Just don't see the point of these things....the three woods today go so long why would you need this? you were hitting the aeroburner just as far
Works for people who struggle with driver yet can't hit a 3 wood, which is a large number of amateur golfers. This club is honestly unreal off the tee, and just wants to go straight.
Massive niche in the market for these mini drivers

come on rick aero burner v Calloway Big Bertha mini driver
Heh. kuro."cage" -=P...ku.ro.ka.gey. great review!. gonna get it, next yr lol
2020
So it's a 2 wood...
121 club speed
It's quite disappointing to see how far Rick has fallen.
