Danny, you do not need to explain anything to us. I always found your manner of speaking very pleasant. I also call my plants “he” and “she.” I’m from the US, and work in the plant trade, and don’t find calling plants male or female weird at all. Many plants are male and female, for those who don’t know. Euphorbias are one such genus. Keep up the great work!

    • @jhndr0nia
      @jhndr0nia 5 месяцев назад

I am sorry but that's wrong. Euphorbia are hermaphrodites, they only have male and female flowers instead of bisexual flowers

    • @jhndr0nia
      @jhndr0nia 5 месяцев назад +2

The vast majority of Euphorbia species are monoecious with unisexual flowers. Dioecy is rather rare in general less than 10% of all flowering plants

Agreed, we Americans do the same thing. We refer to our cities as she, we refer to our cars as she. In fact I have a friend I used to work with and she said "all cars are girls". She named her cars female names.

Honestly, in English, referring to non human things with gendered pronouns are usually used a sign of endearment, so a lot of times whenever you refer to your orchids as “he” or “she” it comes off as you valuing them or really liking them, so it’s honestly really sweet! Also, I just want to add that your English is completely fine, so don’t let anyone tell you anything different!

Thank you for allowing us to get to know you better than we might have if all you talked about was your beautiful orchids. Your English is very good, excellent vocabulary. More varied and accurate than many native English (American) speakers. In this country we should be aware of genders as applied in languages because of the many people who are from other countries, particularly Spanish speakers. I hope your very kind explanation of your language background will encourage people to expand their understanding of their neighbors.

My family is Hungarian, my mom escaped Hungary during their revolution in the late 1950’s. She always struggled with pronouns when speaking English, as did other family members that grew up speaking Hungarian. Your English is great and I always enjoying watching & listening to you as it reminds me of my family. No one should have issues with the way you speak and if they do, it’s THEIR issue not yours. Your videos are so informative and it’s a shame that some people can’t see past hearing someone speaking slightly different and just enjoy the video and learn from the information presented. The world is a richer place having the variety of cultures and languages that are around the world. The narrow minded people that can’t tolerate differences probably don’t travel anywhere and that’s a shame, as they would learn a thing or two from the experiences. Keep doing what you are doing. We love you. 🥰 🇨🇦

Thanks for sharing your story! Being fluent in both English and French, I never questioned your occasional use of masculine/feminine. Learning the accents on letters and the M/F concept in French and other Latin languages seem to be the most difficult for English speakers. And, just to throw you for a loop, most animals are, in fact, assigned a gender. They are usually only referred to as ''it'' when the gender is unknown, like a dog you see from a distance, for example. There are also some other quirky exceptions to that rule, like ships and sometimes cars, but that's a whole other discussion. I think the way you speak is a charming part of what makes you you, and I genuinely hope that others agree! :-)
    *Edited for clarity.

Funny timing. Just yesterday, I was helping a friend with an orchid repot and teaching her a bit of what I learned from you. I kept pronouncing “algae” with a hard “g.” My friend was laughing at me (we’re both American), but I’ve watched so many of your videos, your British “algae” is in my head now!
A word about the gender thing: I’m a writer and a linguistics geek and it’s not at all uncommon to hear native English speakers gender nouns - usually in a casual, playful kind of way. “Look at my new coat! Isn’t she beautiful?” I hear that all the time and I think it’s very endearing!
(Fun fact: Old English actually had grammatical gender, but it fell out of use between the 11th and 15th centuries.)
I’ve given all my orchids names. Most are female, but interestingly enough, the one guy is a Catesetum. His name is “Perry.” :)

Danni, I love your accent. Your way of explaining things is amazing for being a second language. Just ignore those who say anything, most likely they want a reaction from you. I studdied Italian for a semester in Italy and so the concept of he and she in grammar is kind of normalized to me now. I rather like it more than in English, for me IT is only used for non living things. Plants for me are usually she. Great video! I have watched many, many of your videos as I have gone through my orchid journey, they’ve been amazingly useful.
I believe (could well be wrong) that Hungarian is the hardest language to learn, and that English is the second hardest (particularly, as you said, the xxxx spelling!
Such a sweet video, really useful to our understanding. I have two Finnish friends, which I believe is the only language similar to Hungarian (luckily one of them came with me when I visited Hungary!), and got on OK.
I also have a friend who is an Australian pianist who got a bursary to go up Hungary to study for three years, and he learned to speak Hungarian in that time!!
Anyway, I’ve never commented on any of your videos before, so I should say, thank you for all your help, and pointers, and inspiration.

This was super interesting to hear your perspective on navigating with multiple languages! It makes tons of sense because language is so hardwired to how we go through the world.
I actually had a similar problem when I was in Japan because the verb To Be, Iru, changes form depending on if the subject is alive or not. But you use the non-living form to talk about plants, so I always got it wrong because plants are clearly alive! It reminded me of that when you said you hate calling living things "it". Personally I’ve never been good with languages so I can appreciate the effort one puts into learning a new language. Grammar, sentence structure, gendered nouns, all vary by languages, so please just be yourself and don’t worry about the few people (probably Americans, and I can say that since I’m American) who don’t understand you or want to be critical. Danny, thank you for the explanation-it was informative and very interesting and I love learning more about you but I agree with others that you shouldn’t have to explain why you speak the way you do just because of ignorance and rudeness of others. That stinks, I just don’t understand some people. I learned French and some Spanish and the concept of feminine and masculine words was so foreign to me and took a while to understand. So I think it is amazing how well you speak English because I can’t speak another language as well as you. I now have an almost 9 year old daughter and she gets frustrated with the inconsistency of spelling and pronunciation in English and it is her native language! It is HARD! Also, don’t ever change who you are (which I don’t think you would do 😉) for others. And I love your blabbing, I would be honored to have a friend like you that I could listen to blab and would listen to me blab back! Much love to you!! Thank you for what you do!

Hello, Danny, yes, I totally agree with you, I'm Mexican and I speak English,as well as I'm still learning English, so I always use your channel for improving my skills such as Vocabulary and Listening, I undertand your point of view about the gender and pronunciation of some words, it's so similar from spanish. I enjoy your videos about orchids and I can practice the English at the same time. Thanks a lot :)

Hello/ I think your accent and speech is adorable. I’m an elder now,but my elders used to work on cars and machinery and everything was referred to as he or she, women did it to.

Portuguese here, and oh my I can relate so much to your story! I also learned English from watching cartoons and movies, but back then they were all subtitled in Portuguese, so I heard the English and understood very fast the meaning. When I got to school and started learning English, I already knew how to speak almost like a native English speaking person. Oh, and the grammar was easier than the Portuguese one! Very few verbs without the gender types like you mentioned! Makes sense, because our languages are Latin based ones!
Thank you for the video and for sharing your story!

Hahaha Danny, I was really entertained by this video! 😂 Slavic (Bulgarian) speaker here, and yes, we have similar grammar rules and I have had the same struggles. I was born in '89 and I learned English in the early 90s from Cartoon Network and copying lyrics of songs by my fav 'Western' bands in computer clubs lol! An American friend of mine once said I sound like a cartoon character - the choice of words, the slang, the pronunciation, the intonation.. He used to say it's indeed fascinating how clean of accent my English was being a Slavic native speaker, and that's solely because I immitated the movie characters. 😁 I think it's quite common for Balkan millennials to have very little to no accent exactly because of how life unfolded in the early 90s.
I never lived in an English speaking country, so all of this was acquired through CN. I later developed more phrasal and advanced English watching movies, and yes, Sir David Attenborough (I studied Life sciences). Good times! Anyway, I just wanted to say I really related with this video and made me feel nostalgic! Thanks for posting it! ❤

So interesting that this is the same in Romanian! I know from French lessions I had in school that it's the same in French (another Latin language). Something similar also happens in Portuguese (my third language I'm busy learning) where the letter a word ends on will affect which gender you refer to it as. I'm sorry people have been giving you a hard time in the comments about it! I love that you refer to orchids as she. I've started doing it just cause I like how it sounds😂❤
PS: I also learnt English from TV first before I learnt it in school!

Oooh haha so funny I’ve had a few comments over the years complaining about it, they used a funny expression I cannot remember, ladi di, lodi do, singy songy.. I really can’t remember it.. it meant something like melodic when I googled it :))) so you are the first to say you enjoy it, thank you ☺️

No need to explain but I'm kind of glad you did, hahaha! I just recently came across your page and thought you were English, then maybe not. Just know that most Americans, me of course, are too lazy to learn another language. My wife is Filipino and they pronounce english words as they read them too. Like the word comfortable. They would say com/fort/a/bal. And as far as the "it" thing goes, yes we use it a lot but when referring to a vehicle, we tend to say "she". She's a beauty or she's all cleaned up and ready. Regardless, I'm learning a lot from your videos. Now I walk into a plant nursery and recognize oncidiums or phalaenopsis. Thank you 🙏😁

Danny, I'm so sorry people are being ridiculous. Your English is totally fine! I've never had any issues understanding you. Never even occurred to me. Language is for communicating. I can appreciate that in certain circumstances, completely proper English is necessary. But if you can understand another person and they've made an effort, that's what counts. ❤
You are a fantastic teacher. And I will be forever grateful for your videos.

Former county-level spelling bee champ here - I never thought about how weird it was to have spelling bees, ha! Wait, do Canadians or Brits or Aussies have spelling bees? It really does show how much more logical reading/writing is in other languages. It's also funny how you rarely question your own culture until someone from the outside points out the quirks.

Most high achievers in spelling bees are descendants of people from the continent of India, I don’t believe that English is the first language of India.

I'm so jealous of all the European content creators who, like you, speak nearly perfect English as a second language. I was wondering what your hard to detect accent is. I hope you aren't bothered too much by comments. Some people don't have a filter on their curiosity. I recently learned that English has more vowel sounds than most languages (14?) but only 6 vowel letters to use. Hence half of our spelling difficulties.

Very enjoyable video. Your English is beautiful - pronunciation, flow, and melody. I'm not a native speaker, but like you, I also learned English from watching cartoons on weekend morning, and I later studied English at the university. I struggle a lot more with German which has three grammatical genders. And on the subject of gendering my plants, I am not excused by my native tongue. Certain plants I refer to as female - Odontoglossum crispum is most definitely a lady of discriminating taste for me! 😂

Danni, your accent is so good, I believe people forget English is your second language. As a Canadian I have heard many people struggle with the gendering of nouns. I have always taken it in stride since I have so much trouble learning a second language. ❤️
I am relieved that Grace Dunn has both orchid and her species name being feminine. Grace is usually a woman’s name where I come from and I would not want the plant to be confused about her gender. 😉

Came across your channel looking for advice on fertilising my year old Phalaenopsis and stayed for the doves and updates 😄 Also don't the worry, I call my orchid "he" as well - it's not just mother tongue here, feels good to think of him as "little guy".

Danny, you speak better English that many native English speakers. I have never had a problem understanding what you are saying or what you meant, even when perfect grammar was not used; most native English speakers don't use perfect grammar either, the UK is a perfect example, same here in South Africa where English is our main form of communication and education. Your English accent is very neautral and clear to undersand. Do what works for you and if that means finding a middle ground between your native language and a leant language then that is okay; I am sure the general populous on earth is intelligent enough to understand or figure out what it is you mean. I have also heared many You Tubers form the UK, USA and Canada reffer to plants as male or female, and interpreted it as a sign of having a fondness towards the plant; people on You Tube need to chill. I also reffer to my Orchids as she after I heard you calling them she and it made sense to me because you also spoke about the mother plant.

I remember you explaining this years ago and it makes so much sense. I totally get it. English speakers have no room to complain about other languages. English sucks. When I was learning German and pretty sure Spanish too, there is gendered nouns. So it makes sense to me.
