Fun fact: The 2 horns that come off the bow (very front) are known as bridle arrestors. Before nose gear launch, a cable would wrap around the catapult shuttle and attach to hooks on the airplane. The horns kept the Navy from losing the cable into the ocean. By the time USS Theodore Roosevelt was built, the Navy no longer used this bridle launch system. Previous carriers all had their horns removed in the shipyard during overhaul. All except USS Enterprise. The commanding officer refused to allow them to be removed so that USS Enterprise would remain the longest aircraft carrier in the fleet.

@Packless1 I'm not sure about that. I have worked with French Super Etendards on carriers without bridle arrestors, and I don't specifically remember disposable bridles. However, a quick image search does show them attached to bridles. Clemenceau does not have bridle arrestors. You've really peeked my curiosity.

Felix the Cat was a popular cartoon character invented in 1919. The Felix the Cat logo and name was applied to VF-3, a fighter squadron originally assigned to Saratoga (CV-3). Saratoga was a Lexington class carrier and one of the US Navy's first ones, and commissioned in 1927. It was later expended in one of the atomic bomb tests shortly after WWII. In the 1950's, the Saratoga name was assigned to a Forrestal class carrier with the hull number of (CVA-60, later CV-60).

to be honest this is almost clickbait this thing is so astonishingly cheesy... just the top deck?
Hell, way back in the 1980s the GI Joe aircraft carrier was longer and was the full ship, not just the top deck... which looks dumb since it is not a monitor type of ship (that rides that low in the water). That old toy easily beats this collection... not even a comparison.

The Tomcater's logo is Felix the Cat. A well known cartoon character from early to mid 20th century. Felix and his magic bag of tricks. I believe Dreamworks/NBC Universal owns him these days. There is some reference to him in Universal parks. He even had 2 movies.

They numbered them incorrectly: to make it so you don't have to lift UP the previous piece, you start at the back then you just drop the next section in place. Either that or put the tabs and the slots on the opposite ends.

  • @devinminar3089
    @devinminar3089 Год назад +30

So a couple things. The main superstructure is not called the admiral's bridge. It's called the superstructure or the island. The admirals bridge is just one of the levels in it. Also vf32 is not the flying swordsman it is the fighting swordsman. But they do open as well which is a really good feature and so and they have the hooks implemented on the back and also for the tomcaters the cat's name is Felix the cat. And they were actually the last tomcat squadron to deploy in 2006. Vf32 fighting swordsman Gypsy roll was attached to my aircraft carrier the USS Harry s Truman.

@@MilitaryVehicleReviews In 1954, Otto Messmer retired from the Felix daily newspaper strips, and his assistant Joe Oriolo (the co-creator of Casper the Friendly Ghost) took over. Oriolo struck a deal with Felix's new owner to begin a new series of Felix cartoons for television. Oriolo starred Felix in 260 television cartoons produced by Paramount Cartoon Studios, and distributed by Trans-Lux. The made for TV Felix the Cat cartoons either went on the air on October 2, 1958 about 65 years ago or in 1959. It is unknown when his show had its final episode.
The show did away with Felix's previous supporting cast and introduced many new characters. These characters were performed by voice actor Jack Mercer. Oriolo's plots revolve around the unsuccessful attempts of the antagonists to steal Felix's Magic Bag, though in an unusual twist, these antagonists are occasionally depicted as Felix's friends as well. While the cartoons were a ratings success, critics have dismissed them as paling in comparison to the earlier Sullivan-Messmer works. Oriolo aimed the cartoons at children. The series used limited animation (owing to a limited budget) and simplistic storylines.[5]

I agree with vf 31 being Felix the cat I was ship's company v1 flightdeck on the Lincoln in 03-07 so I remember the vf 31 spaces before they were handed over to vfa 2 bounty hunters it was an F18 Foxtrot squadron 2 seater super hornets Rhinos that transitioned from the 14 deltas while we we also had the 137 kestrels which I think were echos the 151 vigilantes which were legacy hornets (babies) but yeah I appreciate the detail for the padeyes on the deck but yeah the admirals bridge is the island but it's kind of missing not the crash shack but the tower behind the island and tilly plus it'd be kind of awesome for the barricade to be raised for emergency recovery

They didn't take it far enough, in my opinion. The packaging is nice, but the die-cast planes are clearly toy. Just having the deck tells me it was designed for the Japanese market, where most homes are small, and things cannot be permanently displayed. It is meant to be set up on the floor for temporary play, and put away the rest of the time.
Although the underside of the deck plates do not appear to have anything molded for future pieces, that that would make it more appealing (to me). Hangar deck pieces could be paired with addition aircraft; ideally different planes such as Hornets, Intruders, Vikings, etc.Even more crazy-cool would be for a one-piece bottom hull, and with a motor kit, making the whole ship into an R/C model.

All of the Tomcats could drop bombs, they were just not as good at it as other aircraft until the LANTIRN pod was installerd. They skipped some iconic squadrons for the land based, single special version of Vandy 1 and the last Iranian fighter we kept due to the Shah's deposition. Could have chosen the Red Rippers, Freelancers, Renegades, Starfighters, Screaming Eagles, Be-Devilers, Diamondbacks, Sluggers, Black Knights, Satan's Kittens, Red Lightnings, Checkmates, or Pukin Dogs (Black Lions). Even the training or reserve squadrons would have been better than those two. I would rather the two squadrons that served on the Big E with each modex and buno along with the other aircraft, equipment and crew that would go along with them. Of course you would need the wing sweep fixed so they could be parked closer as no more than half a squadrons AC would likely be staged on the flight deck for practical purposes. Cool idea, but not the greatest for authenticity. Bugs on the bow and cats on the stern with the buffs in between would be a great display piece.

We had a similar logo with a mouse in the water with a periscope to signify the squadrons history as an anti-submarine squadron. Possible the f14 tomcat were in that same flight group and had a similar history. VS-31 was decommissioned in 2008.

But I wish they would have been spread out over a few different plane types. Thats to cool. . . With that much detaiI I couldn't stop with just fighters. I'd want a little "deck accessory kit" - a tug/tractor with a ordinance trailor, Hawkeye AWACS and a chopper. A Sea Hawk, Sea Stallion or maybe an old Sea King.

The Tomcatters logo is Felix the Cat. I don't know for sure but it probably has something to do with Felix being very lucky in the cartoons and films. He never gave up until his job was done and he could do almost anything thanks to his magic carpet bag.

Felix was created the same time as the m1919 in well 1919! Lol its still used today for the cat food adverts felix and it was still popular cartoon in the 90s for me, I used to watch it everyday after school in the 90s! I'm 35 now so surprised you don't know felix the cat! The smurfs were on after it and bodger and Badger that was brilliant 😆 🤣 😂

The GI Joe carrier was larger. I know I had to assemble then stick on all the decals for all that shit for my lil' brother. He's now my younger brother, I'm the runt in the family.

As has been noted VF-31 was a legacy squadron so their tail art was originally used on older fighter aircraft. However, Felix got an extra tail when they moved to the F-14s because the aircraft has twin tails.

Wait till Trumpeter or Merit or others put out a full kit. It will cost the same and won't look like a toy. (Obviously with a lot more modelling skills which is most of the enjoyment)
