- Testing cheap vs expensive RC airplanes to find the best plane! Who will win this budget challenge? We bought a $100 place, a $500 plane, and a $1500 remote control Jet! We will put them through multiple tests including the altitude test, the obstacle course test, and the demolition derby battle. The last plane standing wins!... if nothing goes wrong. This video became more expensive than we though because there were multiple crashes.. We found out that there was a balance problem with the jet and it ended up being way too nose heavy.. Will we be able to get it to fly? Or will our wallets run out first? Let's find out..

Guys, fighter jets are inherently unstable, that's why they're so maneuverable . Take a sleek, aerodynamic plane and strap a heavy, square box on it, it's not going to fly right. It's like flying with the airbrake deployed.
Good point
6:20 When he rebuild the plane, why not cut out a spot in the middle of the plane designed for the go pro to fit in a little? Maybe it can go in 1" or 1.5". And center it, but back towards the rear more. That might help.
I ace no clue what this means because I don’t build air crafts but uhm good point
It would make the plane tail heavy youd have to mount it on the fuselage between the wings
@@josephsummers2427 good point!!!
The fact that Jeff is a pilot but doesn't know what center of gravity is and how important it is😂😂😂
exactly
i literally knew it was nose heavy as soon as it did not rotate at a speed, how could it be more obvious?
Altitude test??
Also, who's idea was it to strap a huge camera to it?
I don’t fly rc planes a lot, but I do own a few. I own the small yellow one (it is called the champ) and I can say that it is quite capable. Despite the lack of ailerons, there are still multiple maneuvers that it can perform. My personal favorite is bring it to a high altitude, and jamming the left stick to the bottom left/right corner and holding it there with the thrust at full. The aircraft enters a steep dive while spinning on multiple axis’s. Then, I pull up right before it touches the ground. Unfortunately, I have broken the wing twice while doing that.

Yeah, EDF jets don't have as much toque. Takes longer to take off. Gotta have that CG on point too.
Also, horizon hobby sells it for $530. You already have the batteries, controller, & charger, so you save money there. Good luck.
Also, specifically with the Hornet because of the wheels, the center of rotation is way far back from the center of lift, so it needs flaps to aid in rotation.

Jeff I didn’t know you were a pilot THATS SO COOL
Word of advice to anyone wanting to purchase an rc airplane, the Horizon Hobby Apprentice STS is an amazing first plane. It is large to it can handle high winds (personally tested at 35mph) and is very forgiving. You can also buy. GPS sensor and set up a boundary where if the plane starts to cross it, it automatically turns around. You can also by a radar for the bottom that automatically flares the airplane when landing. This helps prevent new pilots from landing at too steep and f an angle and smashing the plane into the ground. It also has auto level so if you let go of the controls it returns to level flight by itself. Lastly with a 3200mah 3s Lopo you can get between 15 minutes to 25 minutes of flight time, depending how fast you are going and if there is wind.
If they wanted a jet they could have also done the HABU STS.
Habu sts was my first. Now I'm fly f 18 blue Angels 80mm from eflight
@@amberreeves3567 E-Flite F-15 Eagle for me, now I’m just waiting to unbox my Blue Angel!
The 1.2 m aero scout is a better beginner plane. It has stronger landing gear, is a pusher prop so you don’t have to worry about breaking the cowling, and is way cheaper. It also flies a lot better and uses screws to hold on the wings instead of rubber bands.
@@mybobize it probably is, but you can fly the habu too as a beginner, and once you are getting it under good control, you can get way more out of it compared to the aeroscout
Lol, this feels like the trailer for "Face palm: The movie" Lol, good effort though, those planes are a nightmare to fly, even under good conditions.
I Understand that you might think those planes are hard to fly, but thrust me they are the easiest planes out there.
@@businesscat_11 Yes they are!!!! With the SAFE and AS3X anybody could fly it if they knew up, down, left, and right.

Super bummed you couldn’t get that plane going but watching Jeff Frankenstein that altogether and build that was SUPER satisfying. One of my favorite videos yet honestly
All they needed to do was move the battery (and consequently, the CG) back. The GoPro really didn’t help at all. And, I know the scale ordinance (fuel tanks and missiles) look cool, but they create a lot of drag. They also needed to use flaps to assist in takeoff rotation.
@@aerospacematt9147 nope.
The eflite f-18 needs the elevators to be 4mm posative elevator from The center line while at rest.
Its 9n the 3rd page of the manual.
They also arent $1,500.
These jack offs are a got damn joke.
They not only couldnt get the price right of any of them.
But they dont know how to read a damn manual.
Makes sense.
Their videos are crap
@@krotchlickmeugh627 I agree. I did neglect to mention the 4mm elevator because I hadn’t seen the elevator up close in the video so I couldn’t see if they had done that. Also, I just purchased one for $529 at a hobby store. Don’t know where they got the 1500 from.
3:20 The F-18 needs a TON of room to take off because of the fact that the main gear (center of rotation) are so far back from the CG (center of gravity) and also the Center of Lift. Therefore, it needs Flaps to take off. Also, the GoPro really didn’t help in terms of weight and aerodynamics. That’s why Runcams and Insta 360 Gos exist.
Also needs some expo on the rudder
@@kaisfishin9124 That always helps!
Nah i can take mine off in less than 100 feet.
Its all in the elevator.
@@krotchlickmeugh627 Yes, I was referring to Brian Phillips’ video where he needed a lot of room on the main road by his house to take off. I have one, just haven’t flown it yet, but if you say it can take off in 100 feet, I guess I’ll have to see for myself.
Flaps full and a gradual increase in throttle as you make your way down the runway and slowly apply elevator pressure and she'll come right up at 100 ft. I love the sound of mine it sounds so real you could totally convince somebody it's a real turbine.

I can't believe you didn't think of how the gopro would mess everything up first. As soon as I saw that big box stuck there, I knew it wouldn't fly.
There are plenty of camera options that would work. Heck, there’s a Runcam 2 that records in 4K that would fit in the cockpit, or I’ve seen people put it behind the Cheater vents in the aft part of the fuselage. Now, I have gotten away with a similarly sized camera on an F-16, but I was lucky and was deliberate about where I placed it.
$1500? No....$550, every day cost for the E-Flite F-18.

EDF jets are not that hard. I had six inside the first 3 months of flying. The hard part of any rc plane is the maiden. You have to track and learn the airframe's characteristics in under four minutes, while applying trim and using flaps and retracts for the first time in the air. Glide slope and stall characteristics have to be felt out. ALWAYs check the documentation for CG. Also when you buy a model the odds of somebody on RUclips showing you battery placement and what size they used is very high.
Btw foam RC planes are the easiest to repair, all you need is some foam safe glue like foamtac.
I have repaired damage and seen damage repaired way worse than this and the plane is still flying fine years later.
For $100 you could get a way better RC plane lol
I used to have the same super cub (the orange one) except in red. One time while flying it one of the front wheels fell off in mid flight. I had to land the thing in the grass with two wheels.
I ended up crashing that plane because the tab holding the battery in broke and the battery fell out mid flight 😒
Doesn’t it have battery straps to prevent such an occurrence? Not something I’d expect to hear from a top quality Horizon plane. I’m sorry that that happened.
@@aerospacematt9147 yeah there’s a plastic latch and a Velcro strap. The Velcro strap had previously broke and I hadn’t replaced it yet. Guess the plastic door panel clip wasn’t enough to hold it.
@@rideroftheforce5245 How high up we’re you? Did the battery survive? I nosed in my E-Flite F-15 because I was doing a low pass in high rates and overcompensated a turn. Even after going straight nose in at full throttle, the battery survived. They’re tough sometimes.
@@aerospacematt9147 I was probably 75-100 feet up. The battery was just fine, it landed in the grass. It was just the plane that was destroyed when it nose dived. It was a couple years ago though, so I'm not positive about the height.

Who knew that Jeff was a pilot that's epic and who knew that he's haircut is fire bro..
blade propulsion vs thrust from behind is a completely differnt way i flying , while it may have been nose heavy i suspect lack of practice and experience in thrust powered rc planes was the main problem. i has a120mph rc jet i got for 230 10 years back and man that thing was crazy only lasted me about a week because it was difficult to get the hang of it. summary prop rc planes are way easier to controll.
Let's give Jeff one more chance to fly that jet. He deserves it! As a pilot, he knows what he's doing.
Then how come he didn’t check the CG? As a pilot, he should understand the importance of that. He should also understand the importance of using flaps to assist in the takeoff. Also, he should know about the incredible amount of drag that the GoPro creates when situated on the wing root glove. The antics in this video were quite frankly amateurish, and leaves us questioning if he truly has experience flying RC planes.
@@aerospacematt9147 it’s a rc plane chill out it’s not a real plane plus it has a lot of weight on the nose which affects it a lot
@@brian-tj2op Yes it is an “RC plane”. What I don’t like seeing is this jet getting a bad reputation from this video. Here’s something interesting, the physics that govern full scale flight affect models the same way, so a pilot of full size aircraft should’ve known better and checked the CG (And not been irresponsible with camera placement.)
He knows too much to forget to balance a plane. I’m 80% sure the crashing was staged or at least rigged to happen as well. Also, the jet was $472, not $1500.
Those prices are way off

Blue Angels are Navy. Did you see them doing collaboration air shows with the Air Force Thunderbirds? I’ve seen the Blues almost every year of my life at an annual event.
@@aerospacematt9147 yes I have seen them at the air shows.
I love how Jeff just turned into swat
Good video!, (besides the part of watching a brand new Eflite F-18 hit a fence lol) the gopro was too heavy and unbalanced the Centre of gravity, only put gopros on like big rc planes and try to centre them do it don't screw with anything
I think they also had the battery too far forward. And, they didn’t use flaps where it’s necessary. Can you imagine stomping on a repairable plane? That part is just sickening.
Hey guys I really hope that you see my comment but I have a theory if it was always nose heavy without the GoPro in the front why don't you put the GoPro closer to the back pretty much where the rear thrusters are that should be able to balance it out once it is in the air
Faxes
Maybe move the battery back a little too. It probably has trim settings too that would help.
U got ripped off on that blue angels f18. Eflite has them for $529 shipped.
Jeff hair is growing up fast again
It’s so cool that you Jeff now how to fly a plain and now you are sharing it whit anthers.
Yall never disappoint! Love yall!
HA what you mean is all those F/A-18’s you bought were $1,500 total. This is a VERY fun hobby that just takes practice like anything else to get good at it. The average person COULD actually pick one up and fly it. There is this technology called SAFE and AS3X and other modes to prevent you from crashing and to make it easier for you to fly. You guys are either clickbaiting or just spewing inaccurate information. This is the E Flite F/A-18 Blue Angels. The price of this jet is now $529 (not including tax). It was $469 when I bought it. And like Aerospace Matt said in the comments below, you can get what you need to fly this under $1,000…. It’s not that hard to fly. First of all, don’t ever use a GoPro on an rc jet. Too big and heavy. And if you know ANYTHING about rc planes, it’s that the center of gravity is VERY IMPORTANT. Which I’m sorry but, you apparently didn’t know that or your just crashing it on purpose. Second, ever heard of flaps??? If you were a pilot you’d know what they were, when they were used, and how they work. Third, you would know that there is also this thing called DRAG. It basically prevents an airplane from getting all the proper airflow over the wings and fuselage. And putting the fake ordinance and go pros on it doesn’t help. You need far more RC experience with other airplanes before you even ATTEMPT to fly something like this. I’ve flown mine 5 times now. You also would know this if your an RC pilot that you kind of need time for an RC jet to rotate (lift off the ground) and to build up speed before you decide to throw the elevator up and make it fly. This video is highly disappointing and inaccurate. This is a very awesome jet to fly. But requires a high amount of experience. EVEN ON THE BOX it says “Extra-scale Jet for Experienced Pilots” I’m sorry but I highly doubt your a pilot and barely fly RC. You wouldn’t be spewing inaccurate information out and not knowing how an airplane flies and functions if you were. I don’t intend for this to be a rude comment but I want people to know the FACTS about how this hobby works.
The $1500 one is a blue angel jet and I love y’all’s vids you guys make me laugh
Lol it’s $529 not 1500
the jet wont fly with the damn gopro lmao
The plane may have been a disappointment but the Dangie Bros never give up and most certainly don't disappoint their viewers.
The only disappointment here is the pilot. The jet works fine when it’s used properly. A real “pilot” would have known about the CG, and would have used flaps.
That $1500 rc plane is really about $500. Cap
Dam I wish I would get all of that broken parts
That’s so cool that Jeff’s a pilot
I've got a great tip for checking if a plane is too nose heavy. While it's still on the ground, lift the nose, and it should come back down and touch softly. If it comes down too fast or hard, move the battery back until it doesn't. Better luck next time! 😁👍🛩
No. Thats not how it works.
That would be tail heavy.
Man that sucks. Imagine $1500 just crumble like that
