DJ Gig Log - Big PROM time (NEW Mackie SR18s Subwoofers)

- This gig was exciting to breakout the big gear, but the one year break in school dance really gave me a challenge. The music the younger generation is listening to is different. But I also think the social distancing for 1 whole year has affected how the younger generation interacts with each other at events like this. Anyways enjoy!

The New Mackie SR18s Subs amzn.to/3wVW7zS
bit.ly/34VMZiO
"Weird" crowd was the first thing that came to my mind, I'm glad you confirmed my impression
I have been with Mackie for over 25 years... very happy with their products... very clean sound
You should get some rigging frames for those Tops, to hang them on the Truss. Looks much cleaner, you get better dispersion and you're able to move the Subs to the middle, to avoid comb filtering...
Yeah unfortunately they dont make them for the srx. Have to custom make them if I wanted to do that.
@@DJRickWeb jbl vrx
Kinda unreal to see events like this again... I hope I can do events like this in germany soon again.. :)
Dude you got there early and set everything up. Appreciate that... Very professional.
Yup you are right!!!Sometimes you do get the challenging crowd
Dude those subwoofers are insane! I'm glad you are back DJing, still kind of down that I missed my first ever prom (didn't have friends or a crush) thank you for these prom videos it brings back memories of my first homecoming.
Wow, some haters here! What happened to just being nice to each other, Don't sweat it Rick, no one forces them to watch your channel, I personally get a lot out of what you do so thanks for that. Stay safe and be cool.
i swear i literally just said the same thing they hating on my boy
we got 6 of those subs and they are honestly amazing. mackie have come a long long way
Ooh we need a full review of those new Mackie 18's!
Mackie is no joke. I’ve got the SRM650 series and they absolutely bump!!! Been running them for a few years now.
Mackie is not terrible but nothing special
I am running 15a thumps on top and 18 thumps for bottom. Clean and powerful.
I just did a Prom gig myself & I didn't realize how out of the loop I was until I brought my nephew in who just graduated HS himself. I DJ'd a couple of Sweet 16s pre pandemic, figured there wasn't too much catching up I had to do...boy was I wrong. He gave me a list of 100 songs & I didn't have not a single 1 of them. Didn't even recognize any of the artists. Shelf life of music nowadays is shorter than ever and kid's attention span even shorter. Thank God I had my nephew, otherwise I would've bombed.
With that being said...what possessed you to play majority of the tunes highlighted in this video? I admit I was behind the times but not to the point where I'd be playing DMX for a bunch of HS seniors. When he recently passed I was dumbfounded by the amount of local kid that didn't even know who that was... and I'm from NYC.
Don't push the blame on the kids & use "weird" as an excuse. Man up and admit you dropped the ball. You simply weren't prepped for the occasion.
It was the request list generated by the students. By over 100+ of them.
@@DJRickWeb You all good Rick fuck the haters..
yeah i’m a hs senior AND a DJ. i was kinda cringing at the song selection- pandemic changed a lot about how teens party. the songs that rocked bar mitzvahs and weddings from 2016-2018 dont hit the same way. i suggest blending the hip hop and pop vía tech house. it’s a very digestible edm gente and great for younger gen parties
@@DJRickWebit you don’t mind me asking, how are you able to do that. do you just tell the school to send out a survey?
Great Dj vlog bro! And the Dj furniture with the Rane Twelves looks clean!!!
Yeah I’ve had dj events where the crowd is hard to read and l played music from every genre and it was like pulling teeth (very stressful)!!! Lol
Same here. The cringe feeling like you can't win. Ugh!
Just play sing a longs. They eat that up
I don't care about different tastes in music, when I get the opportunity to party again, I won't care if it's my taste or not, I'll dance to Mozart if I have to. Those kids need some caffeine.
But I'm glad big parties are coming back
For real! they was just standing still on the good tracks that most ppl move to!
you guys are too old. these are not boomers they are zoomers, and yall just dont know what they into these days.
Super Awesome Gig Log!! I'm Glad Everyone Had a Great Time!! I always enjoy your Content. Awesome Setup
Hi! Is sounds good than a JBL PRX or SRX?
Both have there uses.
@@DJRickWeb i see but, wich sounds better? Mackie or JBL?
The jbl of course it cost 3 times as much for a reason
Hello! Can anyone tell me if they heard JBL SRX 815 and MACKIE SRM 215 V-Class if there is a big difference in SPL?
Yes. And yes there is a difference. Biggest difference is in clarity
@@DJRickWeb wich is more good?
Depends on usage and needs
@@DJRickWeb for a live band 😀
What an insane night
I literally use your videos to build my playlists. Lol. Love the Vlogs. We just did our first Prom and it was a blast!
I’ve been waiting for more than a year and a had to try my six EV ETX18 subs....:(
Great job, You tried and played all the right floor fillers . The one song that they reacted most to was Party in the USA lol
The moment I saw those subs in that configuration I cringed. Having multiple subs of different brands, sizes and specification is a bad idea. You will get serious comb filtering and phase cancellation. Whenever your combing subs, make sure they are all the same. If not, it will result in bad efficiency and wasted power!
Honestly, when he did the sound test I immediately felt that some subs were cancelling each other because with 6 subs you should be getting 6 times the bass power I felt in the clip. (Could be the camera audio as well)
The subs can be issues but if you configure the subs properly it isn't an issue. Which was done. Setting the crossovers so the prx 15s are doing mid-bass 80-120. Bottom subs doing 35 to 80 and the levels were set to match spl between brands.
It can be done.
Camera audio. The configuration was done properly
@@DJRickWeb Yeah, with that you've prevented the Tops to interferr with the subs. Still the problem with different Subs. First you've mixed 15" with 18" Speakers, which would be fine if you've had configured it in a 3 Way System with the VRX's and the Mackies doing like 30-60Hz, the PRX's doing like 60-110Hz and the Tops obove that range. But then you would still have the Problem that the 18's are different models from different Manufacturers. The problems are caused by the difference in moved weight of the chassies (In Thile Small Parameters called MMS) the different tuning frequencies of both the chassis and the housing and also different positions of where the driver is sitting in the housing (causing runtime delays). All this together is resulting in bad effeciency and a muddy sound. I do believe you when you say it sounded well, but i can guarantee you, that if you would've used as example 6 x the Mackie Subs, the sound would be way better just because all are the same type of subwoofer. Just test it out and you will be blown away by the difference.
@@DJRickWeb I agree with Dj Lachlan , there will be phase cancellations with all this different brands of subwoofers , even if you try to make them work at different frequencies , you also have to work with delay and a few more things . I recommend selling your Mackie and prx subs and find another pair of vrx subs , or just buy a good pair of double 18's and keep a pair of whatever you like the most for smaller events.
Glad to see you rocking events, thanks for great content
Do you prefer to use powered equipment or battery operated stuff?
Depends. Lights i like battery as much as possible. Speakers normal all powered
Curious what are your thoughts Mackie sr18s vs. JBL PRX815? Is Mackie a lot louder? I know JBL is a lot smaller. @DJ Rick...
Not louder. Just deeper do to the nature of a 18 vs a 15.
love the overhead trussing lighting setup
Nice gig, glad they are coming back.
Those 3 subs are all diffrent types of subs as everyone mentioned in the comments....First off you can't match a 15inch sub with an 18inch sub the 15' kicks faster and the 18' kicks slower so you have some phase cancelation from there. Also they work with diffrent crossover types the 18' needs 80Hz or 100Hz and the 15' around 120Hz to 150HZ and finally the mackie subs have diffrent peak SPL and total diffrent sound they don't even match 60% from the Vrx subs.
Just buy another 2 Vrx subs and stack them with the srx speakers and your sound will be much better than this.
Overall love your gig logs been here since 2019 cheers from Greece!
That is very well said. Learned something new today. Thanks!
Thanks. Thats actually how the crossovers were setup through the drive rack. I backed the vrxs off so that the spl matched the Mackie peak spl. Worked out pretty well. Really nice full range sound
The students be standing
Nice Surfin'!
Looks like we're all getting new gear. I have another pair of EV ELX118s on the way. :)
Hi, i buyed srm 2850 doubled one, will use it with my 2x alto ts315 and mackie thump 15a also 2x....i got question i need 4 tops or 2 will be enough for this subs ?
Really up to you on that
Ok so I’ve had my sr18s sub for a week now and I love it compared to both my behringers. I was just curious on what mode would be best to use it on
I like deep but depends on the music being played
@@DJRickWeb ok cool that’s what I’ve been putting it on thanks so much!
Do those Mackie subs play down to 30hz? Can you recommend the lowest playing active PA subwoofers? Someone told me JBL and QSC but won’t give me specs
You can Google the specs. Deepest subs will be dual 18s or 22s. But in the single 18 class of affordable subs. I would recommend the jbl 18 for the lowest hitting sub
@@DJRickWeb thanks bro, I decided -10db at 30hz isn’t low enough for me and it’s slightly too expensive so I’m gonna build my own cabinet tuned to 32hz and throw a good driver and plate amp in there. I have a lot of experience building bandpass boxes and huge ported walls for car audio so it should be somewhat easy, I’ll post videos on my channel if you’re interested
Don't let the negative comments get to you. Stay true to yourself and keep doing your thing. You can't please everyone. Keep it up bro!
That was awesome Rick
Would these pair well with mackie thump 15s v4 as I need to buy a system for myself for personal use and possibly parties etc so wanna know what u think about that and then a pair of 15 inch subwoofers also
The sr subs are plenty powerful for thumbs
One of my 3 this year were like this a bit. So glad the others weren't. Mine were bigger though (more kids) I think that helps somehow. The more kids the better it went 🤷♂️
Im thinking of doing 2 turbosound iq18b stacked on each side..and a 4k watt yamaha double in the middle with 2 eon 615 on them for a 500 rave open air..would u say i need more outthrow ? Tops on each side are milan 15"
Not sure havent heard half those speakers before. And no clue what the venue looks like
Really nice set up. Clean
thx RW.... keep on rockin'
It must be cold, I'm seeing the mob of cattle standing in a group during a storm, just the outer ones trying to gt into the middle for warmth.
Interesting how there is an invisible barrier between you and the students. I always try to close that gap so the students connect with the music more closely. I don't have a tried and true way to do it, but I kept thinking, "How can I close that gap!?" Got ideas? Would love to hear 'em. Nice event!
I seen the crowd not "into" the tracks you played that would usually get the crowd "going". They preferred not hip hop or dance tracks besides EDM/Rave. I mean come on they went crazy when Taylor Swift was played. Your set was awesome!
How's this new sub by Mackie performance compared to JBL?
About like a prx sub
I am curious. Looks like you bring a ton of stuff. How much do you get for a gig like that.?
This is why I stopped doing HS shows.
Bring back the quarantine.
7:36 Dan+Shay 10,000 Hours best song
Wicked setup man
It's nice to see the srx rocks again!! 😍💙👍
There so loud.
Hi Rick Webb! Can you tell me what the truss stands are called with it's model number along with the trussing? I'm looking to buy and I need trussing that's going to be able to hold a good amount of weight such as 4 moving heads, 4 moving washes, and maybe even line array - but that's just a maybe.
Global Trussing f4 style. Contact a dealer
Excuse the long comment - Another great video and dj gig log. Awesome setup. Please can you provide more thoughts and information about all the speakers you chose for this event. Eg. why not just have the tops and maybe 3 subs. Just interested in your thought process :) Also VERY interesting to hear you say that you've noticed changes about the music the younger generation are into. Years ago before and after the dawn of the download chart I always found it very difficult to keep track of many of their tastes. I hear things like Tik Tok charts are good resources for dj's nowadays. Can you elaborate (another video maybe) about this - because with you being a hugely successful mobile event dj yet are baffled by this then I think a number of us dj's should open up a discussion! Lastly - I noticed from the video that the moving heads didn't appear to have too much variety and seemed to be covering a lot of the 'non used' areas of the floor with the dancers at the back not seeming to get too much of the lighting atmosphere. Was this the case and any suggestions for more coverage with lighting? Keep up the great work and videos. Always enjoy your channel :)
Most likely it’s more about the coverage
@@soundfreak8892 yes but I want to know how he comes to the decision. Is it guess work or personal mix n match preference or are there some calculations being made? Another dj will come to the venue with a different speaker setup but I thought as Rick is very experienced I would like to know more about his thinking :)
Oh no I brought 6 subs cus I had them laying around. Lol. I was originally only going to use the two vrx subs. But the Mackie s came so we decided to try them out. And had the prx subs in the case that holds the turntable both so why not use them lol.
@@DJRickWeb hey man, a little bit more sun can’t be bad 😎
@@DJRickWeb cheers, if you got the gear then it's got to be tested for sure. Any other thoughts about the younger music difficulties and lighting
Any thought on the JBL PRX818XLF vs the Mackie DRM 18s. Thorn between the two.
Get the jbl. The jbl prx 18 is un matched in its price range for how low it will go
What happened to “Keeep them records spinning”???
He's all grown up now "keep them records spinning" is old school Rick

Man I hope those mackies pound. In just ordered one. Took me 4 different retailers. Everytime I ordered one I would get an email the next day. Sorry that Item is on back order, 8-10 weeks.
Great gig log Ricky, thanks! And love the go pro footage. What was the track you dropped at the end of the dancing - with the big 1,2,3,4 hype moment?
Swag surf
Thoughts on the Mackie SR18S? I remember you made a video against entry level subs. I don't consider $800 entry level, but then again I'm poor. lol
So what do you think of them?
Good average level sub. Similar to jbl prx
Cray set up boss!
S just skimming through the comments & I really don't understand the whole "hater" thing. Let me get this straight. So if someone states something that's obviously factual but doesn't result in them dropping to their knees with the content creators Johnson in their mouth, that's considered hating? That's nuts. In my day that was called, telling like it is or calling a spade a spade. Wtf... He played tunes from a different time line that these kids are familiar with. Plain and simple. How are they to blame? If I played mumble rap at an old folks home...
Where do you get your foam sticks from? I have been looking at different places to get giveaways like that.
Amazon whatever is cheapest
Why do they like the same music from 10000 years ago?
Looks great! Sounds great! But the music these kids want to hear...they don't dance....you can't dance to half of it.
I had that sub and wasn't impressed at all,and sent it back. I think the drms 18 is much better, this one isn't what I was expecting given the power it suppose to have and the age.
Dude where can I get the music you are playing Thanks
A lot is on the music pool direct music services
You played every product jingle in the industry - for a crowd who didn’t grow up listening to it ; go with a Disney playlist next time!
What the title off music that you play first test
This was a rough one Rick take your time you and the crowds will get better just still mix it up with the music and as for the setup it was Fine IMO cause i saw your comments and hell i know later on you would do 4x18s of the same brand or more in anyway so hey cudos i give this one a 6/10 overall on to the next one and i believe you will do better and the crowds too...
hi rick, love your vids, question, at proms what sound levels in DBA and DBC slow do you aim for? thanks!!.
90 to 100
Did you daisy those subs? Does it matter that ea sub is a different wattage?
Yeah daisy then dialed them in so none would peak when we turned it up
I hate weird crowds. You can’t win. Impossible. All you can do is throw the bangerz at em

My Hybrid sub goes down to 35hz bro so unsure which subs you have been jamming but yeah a Car sub will get below that im Rocking a Digital Designs 715 on a 1200watt amp and will be getting a 29hz tune enclosure cuz the low lows hit on it like nuts same with my other 15 i have but yeah we cant Dj with Car subs sadly.
bro your mix sets sound the same from 4 years ago!!! lol! change up the play list and the remixes, its no wonder mostly everyone was standing around. I would recommend watching your old videos and your recent ones, they sound the damn same.
The gopro sounds wayyyy better then the audio from your camera
Farther away less distortion makes sense
@@DJRickWeb well i mean like the low frequencys
Ouch...I'm not going to sugarcoat it, that was hard to watch. Funny how you're calling the crowd "weird" when that's what those kids were probably saying about the DJ. You playing for the kids or the parents that booked you? You're spinning for 17 year olds on the biggest night of their young lives & you open up with music that was on the charts when they were learning to walk & talk...and you wonder why they didn't bumrush the dance floor in droves? How many 17 year olds do you think have 50 cent on their Spotify playlists? DJ's ain't what they used to be where you had that 1 kid out of 5000 that wanted DJ equipment for Christmas. You probably had at least a half a dozen kids there with a $200 controller that could've really had that place "Lit" playing the latest EDM Festival bangers & Tik Tok's greatest hits where every one of those kids knows whatever silly dance is trending for the week. Easiest demographic to spin for. It's not like you had a wide range of age groups to appease where you had to play a little something for everyone. 1 age group, that's it. That was a fail buddy, take that L and learn from it.
imagine liking your own comment u neek
Have you DJd for these kids? Cus that was what was on there request list. The tik tok songs were not on it at all. I played the tik tok songs and they didn't dance. At all. I had to cut them fast as shit to save the dance floor
@@DJRickWeb I ignore at least 80% of kids requests, even when given ahead of time. They usually have no idea what they will even dance to.
I need to make a video on this cus the requests were all dance music just older. Weird
@@DJRickWeb a lot of times it comes from one or two students. By gig time I personally don’t put much credence to it. Same with weddings. It’s a balancing act though
The crowd wasn't weird, it was your song selection that was off. Why are you playing Crank Dat, Yeah & In Da Club for a bunch of 16-17 yr olds? They were 3 years old when that shit was out. They don't even consider that shit throwbacks. Their parents listened to that shit. All you gotta play is a bunch of viral Tik Tok crap, mumble rap and Big Room EDM. Don't put it on the kids and label them weird because you don't know your crowd. DJ 101. You went in their with a generic Wedding reception playlist.
Easy to make that judgement. All the stuff I played was on there request list. The tik tok mumble rap got the worst reactions as you don't watch the whole set in the video
@@DJRickWeb I love it when they request Chief Keef, like I can play that shit at a HS event. You can't always make them dance. Some events are just better than others.
