      Considering the man hours, tools and expertise in crafting this work around this seems just as expensive and far more difficult. If you don't want to calculate your time as a cost that's fine, but its disingenuous to compare it to a contractor making a living. 4k is too high for a bannister replacement but that just means you haven't talked to the right trades or properly delineated the scope of work. That being said, your fix wasn't a few hundred dollars at market value. Compare apples to apples.
      I applaud your carpentry skills, but you aren't performing a standard DIY task. If you have the carpentry background to perform this exercise you can see how excessively laborious this fix was compared to simply replacing the newel post if that's the scope of work you reduced the job down to. Again I do admire your skill, but I don't like how the video was framed as a contractor myself but also how it seems to be presented as a DIY video but using techniques and tools far beyond even beginner woodworkers much less your standard handy home owner.

    Looks much better, more modern! I guess I would have used roof-rafter plates (?) on 3 sides (as opposed to cutting that metal foot). And Mr. Chase's solution would not have worked, as his post was clearly pre-cut :-)

    • @AndrewKleinWW
      @AndrewKleinWW  3 года назад +2

      I'm not sure what roof rafter plates are, but I only did one of three sides because only one side really helps in the direction that it was loose. The hand rail attachment point at the top means it can't pivot front to back, only side to side.

    Love how it turned out. I am more curious as to why you didnt just remove the old newel post completely then cut a hole into the floor as you have an unfinished basement so you can se d the new newel post through the floor and anchor to a floor joist for the ultimate strongest stiffest post? Even if the joist wasn't not close you could brace between them. Sorry I have done hundreds of these over my career and have never had one fail since.

    • @AndrewKleinWW
