  • A presentation on Albert Einstein (1879-1955), one of the best-known Jews of the twentieth century. Although he had a complicated relationship with Judaism, he maintained a distinct pride in his Jewish identity, and once said "A Jew who abandons his Judaism is like a snail that abandons its shell. It's still a snail." The lecture was delivered at the Young Israel of Bal Harbour on May 22, 2013.

    Dear Dr Abramson,
This lecture was magnificent. I think I mentioned before, my husband ( who's last name is different than mine ), is an astrophysicist and we've been watching your lectures every night for months. His name is Robert Antonucci from UCSB. He is, btw, an Italian. Your treatment of this whole subject - he found subtle, remarkable and full of implications.
    Thanks, again.
    Sincerely,
    ~ Janey

Earlier this year, National Geographic Channel did a brilliant miniseries on Einstein, called Genius, which went into detail on several of the topics that you covered, including the failed 1914 eclipse observation in the Crimea and how Einstein needed assistants to help with math. It showed how Maleva did all the math and much of the writing on a key paper that got him the recognition that he needed and not only did he not make her a coauthor but refused even to give her an acknowledgement. It was really cool how they contrasted this with the story of Pierre and Marie Curie, where Pierre refused the Nobel Prize until the committee would agree to include Marie to receive it with him. It also goes into Einstein's friendship with the chemist Fritz Haber (who also might be a good subject for you to do a lecture). It's important to note that Einstein was not well informed about nuclear research. When he was first told about how other physicists wanted to get energy from the atom, he told them that they were wasting their time, that the knowledge and technology to do that would be many centuries into the future, and he went off to work on general relativity. Among physicists he was a late comer to atomic science and when finally convinced in the 1930s that a bomb was possible he was recruited for his fame, not because he was expected to contribute scientifically. One note on terminology, you called Einstein theist at the beginning of the lecture, but later you explained how he thought similar to Spinoza in not believing in a personal god, although he referred to God with a capital G, and then you called him a deist. Einstein was a pantheist, like Spinoza. Maybe you can be a pantheist and a deist at the same time, but you can't be a pantheist and a theist as they are kind of opposites. ohh, one more thing, speaking of Chaim Weizmann, he would be s fantastic topic for a lecture too, as would Richard Feynman.

I believe this is from Ronald Clark's 70s Einstein biography: At some point Einstein was at a Princeton, New Jersey party and a woman asked him what historical figure would he most like to have met and what would he say to him. Einstein said he would most like to meet Moses and the question he would like to ask is if he (Moses) ever thought that his people would keep his law for so long.

Great lecture. Einstein as a student is a perfect example of why public education should be based on the intellectual strengths of the individual rather than the Prussian model of extruding students from a generalized education machine.

Einsteins own essays in "Out of my later years"... He identifies himself as Zionist Jew...not an atheist which so many people wrongly are told.

It's quite funny in a coincidental way! Right when I was gonna question/comment whether Einstein's views were similar to Spinoza's, like the prophet he claims to not be, Dr. Abramson answered my question!

You're a superb story teller and teacher. Paul, Philo and Josephus knocked my socks off. .....Haber, Weizmann and Einstein pretty well characterize the whole story of the techno 20th century. Am Binge watching all your lectures....slow down a bit, so I can catch up :)

Please can this lecture be reposted with the power point? I would like to see how it unfolds with images. It remains riveting nonetheless.

So his theory replaces the statement "All things are relative' to 'all things are relatively relative.'

I thought that your Einsteins 'thought experiment' made too much sense Sir Henry, it usually is counter-intuitive. According to Albert, Light will be measured to have identical velocity weather moving away or toward a light source. I think that your train example contradicts the Special Theory of Relativity. Unless I misunderstand the example you set up 'thoughtfully'. (not that it matters one bit)
